Seriously, head over to Paul's site and contact him about getting an aftermarket card. I can almost guarantee he'll do it for cheap and he'll draw an amazing aftermarket for you. Trust me, the guy's bigtime talented -- don't let one card make or break your opinion of his stuff.  It doesn't change my opinion of his talent or work, I just think that there wasn't much effort in this card. I actually pulled another one of his cards, which I am fond of and intend to keep. I'm certainly not knocking his talent, because I am not qualified to do so, my complaint is actually more against TOPPS. Yes, when you only pay $1.50/per card, you will, unfortunately, get cards like that. Some artists, like you, Cat, Cynthia, Rafael, RAM and others REALLY went all out and put your heart and soul into these, for which I feel I can speak for the rest of the collecting community in saying we are wholeheartedly grateful. I really don't mean to insult any of the artists, not my intention. Maybe TOPPS shouldn't ask an artist to do 1006 sketch cards in 2 months or whatever time was allotted. I don't know how long everyone had to work on their cards, but if the artist is asked to do bucketloads obviously some will be less detailed than others. These LOTR sketch cards have made "superstars" of some artists in the trading card community. I'd be willing to bet a lot of artists are very busy doing even MORE commissions now that trading card collectors have had a chance to see some of the brilliant work produced for this set. I know I have a couple of commissions in waiting with some of the artists I mentioned previously. So, by having an artist do so many cards in which they're clearly not able to put forth their best effort due to time constraints, I'm guessing it could negatively affect sketch card commissions in the future for that artist. But getting back to my complaint against TOPPS, I think what irritated me most was their form-letter response and their "suggestion" that I go to JC Penney to buy their factory card sets  . That's the best they can do? Frankly, with the devaluation of the base set, as was said before it is the big-ticket items which sell the product, and paying $50.00 for a box and getting THAT in it is not good business for TOPPS. Seriously, would anyone be happy pulling this card? |

Glad you like my art blog, and..uh.. topless Sawyer. LOL The Eowyn/WK and Aragorn/Lurtz ones were drawn on 11x17 (roughly) then I scan 'em in and color them in Photoshop. Really the sketch cards are the only thing I color by hand (with Prismacolor markers) - anything bigger than that I prefer to color in Photoshop, otherwise it would take way too long and I'd go through way too many markers. |

I agree with Eve - It's up to Topps to say "This isn't acceptable" I know RA's done just that - told artists that the quality of work submitted was not up to standards (yes, we have standards, not sure what they are, but we have 'em!)
And that form letter is HYSTERICAL! I want a copy of the real one so I can start sending my collectors to PENNY'S and SEARS *lol* like when on earth was the last time Sear's carried trading cards? 1970something?
I once had a form letter from Upper Deck that quite politely told me they didn't replace damaged base cards one for one (ie, you send in #17, you get #17) that they send out random replacements? Well, duh, if my 17 is damaged, I NEED a 17, not an 83 or whatever they feel like sending out.
Having said that, I do have my own "form" letters that go out - when binders are out of stock, or other common instances, so I understand the need for them, but even I try to tailor the letters to suit the specific complaint.
But, I really am going to start suggesting Penny's and Sears *lol*

the thing is that card.. DID meet standards...and believe me they have standards.. there are A LOT of cards for this set that did not make it...that is all i am going to say about it.
back to the Sears , JC Penny stuff...I don;t know about you guys, but when I was a kid.. that Sears Christmas Catalog coming in late October early November ... was the BOMB..We would burn through that thing and make these HUGE lists of toys..LOL...ah...good times.. good times...

I think I would hate to see what didn't make it (besides cards disapproved by actors) And yes, the Sears catalog was da bomb - WHEN WE WERE KIDS It's not nearly as cool these days. And certainly I've not seen Non-Sport trading cards in it since I've been collecting ... That letter just seems so out of date? Referring someone to their local classified ads? Maybe it's time for an update Or maybe someone pulled up an old file, but I still think it's funny. And, I needed to laugh today |

Well I am glad they didn't tell me to go to Sears as It would take me at least an 8 hour flight and going to buy one card it would be a bit expensive to go and find out they don't do trading cards  |

Haaahahh Hey, speaking of aftermarkets, since I don't get around to posting a lot these days, if you guys are ever interested in seeing my latest stuff, check out my art blog. I've got a big ol' pile of aftermarkets I'll be working on over the next couple months, and I'll actually be posting the first couple probably sometime tomorrow, so just a heads-up for anyone who's interested. Those catalogs were the best back in the day! My lists from the catalogs were made up almost entirely of Star Wars figures/playsets/vehicles. The Hoth playsets/vehicles were my favorites. Now I want my Wampa back! |

I remember having a ripped pieces of paper (for a bookmark) at almost every page!!! I especially LOVED the Tonka Trucks!!  They were so cool back then!!! (They were metal instead of plastic )
