Well guys, Mark and I love the Gandalf and Aragorn Sketches we saw  so if everyone else follows your taste then Mark and I should havea very cool collection of very cheap sketches WOO HOO Somehow I don't think we'll be that lucky  |

Now those sketches I like I think the fact these cards are on beige card and the artists are using chalk (?) as well as pencil looks very cool  |

Here are some posted by Cat Staggs on the Topps Boards. More have also been posted by Tom Hodges, and they are even more cartoon-ish. www.airbrushcat.com  I like all the ones by CC so far as well as these. I'd say CC's and Cat's took some time to draw. |

Those are beautiful and I agree, they must have taken some time to draw to get the expressions/details just right.  I would need to see more examples from the other artists before committing myself to boxes/cases of these cards though - I'm uneasy about the 'cartoon' sketches and the likelihood of getting a whole heap of them if I buy boxes to open myself!  |

Those are so amazing! I just checked over all the artists on that LOTR sketch site and I'm still a fan of Tom Hodges and Grant Gould even though they do cartoons. I think it's because the cartoon sketches they do don't have a Disney or "saturday morning TV" look. My favorite from Cynthia's is the Sam sketch second from the right, and under the row of Pippen. They're all original, but I don't know about the pencil. I suppose if the artist's were using graphite pencils it would smudge if you rubbed it. If they're using the prismacolors it would'nt smudge. But in a nice display holder it wouldn't matter anyway.  The auto cards aren't covered with anything that I'm aware of. They just have a glossy finish and the auto is written on top. I don't have any sketch cards, but I'm assuming that the cards themselves aren't as glossy as auto cards, or they would be hard to draw on. Anyone want to let me know for sure? |

Kelly, I believe that with Topps (and likely other companies as well) they get the actors to sign the cards and then send the cards back to them. Topps then coats the cards with the glossy protective layer to help prevent smudging.

I've heard stories of some particularly bad one in the Star Wars set being erased so you can have a comissioned sketch on an official card. Inkworks avoids this by numbering each sketch card and posting all of the cards on their website. Topps does not. Some care is required when handling sketch cards, but no more so than autographs or costume cards. Ed |
