Hi, savage727 -- so that was YOU I was bidding against! This is Grant -- sorry, man -- I'm a LOTR fanboy & collector just like the rest of you. And a huge Norton fan. I had to do it. I hope there's no hard feelings! And by the way, I love this forum -- I've been watching for awhile now -- it's really interesting to hear all of your opinions on the art and such. I know there's always talk of the more serious art vs. cartoony stuff, and that's cool -- I personally just love that there's so much variety. There are so many other card companies out there that *only* let the artists do photorealistic stuff, and to me that's boring, because it's like looking at a photograph. So, yeah, I love the variety of styles Topps brings us! And I feel lucky to have been part of the set. Okay, I'll be quiet now -- back to surfin' the net for me.

Hello Grant: No hard feelings. I am just dejected as I ordered 3 Hobby Boxes and 1 Retail and when I opened the Hobby ones I only pulled 1 sketch card from them instead of the 2 or 3 people have been finding. The 3 I pulled were not to my liking at all so when I found one I liked - the Norton Aragorn I thought what the heck go for it. It is great you are a LOTR's fan. How many sketch cards did you draw for the Evolutions set and do you have a favorite character? It probably is Aragorn like me!!

Ah, sorry to hear about your pulls -- I can understand being disappointed, especially with only getting one card.. As for your question, my favorite characters are Aragorn and the Witch-King (which, not surprisingly, are the two characters I drew the most sketch cards of.. heh). I did a total of 200 cards for the set, and then the 6 that Topps sent back to me. I actually have one of my 6 up on ebay right now as a choose-your-own-character auction, so I'm excited to see who wins and what character they want. Also, I know a lot of the artists on this set personally (Cat, Cynthia, Rafael, Tom, Paul, the list goes on) and I love all their styles, so it's exciting for me to try and collect some of their cards. Over all, a very cool set for me. If you wanna see some of the cards that I did, I added a LOTR sketch card gallery to my site: http://GrantGould.com

Welcome to the Yak Shack, Grant! I checked out your web page and was surprised to see Jayne Cobb from Firefly on the personal sketch card page. Love it! I have been thinking about getting a few commissioned sketches from about 3 or 4 different artists. Would you suggest waiting until the buzz from LOTR is over? I was wondering if all you artists will be swamped with requests.

Well I must say that I am sorry to hear about your bad luck Ed, trust me I don't have the best luck when it comes to HP sets. I just wanted to say I opened a couple boxes from my local shop to "get by" until my other boxes get here. I must say in relation to the base cards this is by far..far...far..far the best set I have seen from the LOTR series yet. The cards are on a really nice stock and the A, B, and Stained glass cards actually are more exciting then I thought they would be. Overall I must admit I am more impressed with the cards than I thought I would be (and said) OPEN MOUTH INSERT FOOT sorry Topps you actually did ok by me. See pic page for the sketches I got, even ones that I wouldn't have thought I would like seem to look much better in person. No Cat's or CC's yet though And welcome Grant nice to see a couple more of the "Fellowship of Artists" popping up on the board. As you probably read we can be blunt and difficult at times but it is nice to hear the artists opinions and thoughts on the set.

Thanks Dave. I remember what you posted about your HP pulls. We can both share our misery together - now if only we had a few pints to help the bitterness go down!! I agree with your assessment on the Evolution cards themselves and was happily surprised.

Dave: I just took a look at your link and I would have been so happy to pull what you did. I like the Aragorn card especially but they all are acceptable. What a joke mine are compared to those!

I think that's it exactly Cat! I know Mark and Roz got their Evolutions cases in and have been sorting very many cards so we should hear from her probably tomorrow on what she and Mark were able to pull. Have you been receiving many inquiries for commission work yourself since Evolutions was released and people saw the quality of your work - besides me of course?

He looks so forlorn that I can't imagine him even bothering to breathe... do you know what I mean... as though he'd think that life itself was so pointless that it's not worth breathing.

I posted my first round of sketches, but I won't get my other boxes likely Tuesday, so nothing from me until then. Though I am anxious to see everyone elses.
