Author Topic: How long before box prices start going crazy?  (Read 5055 times)

How long does everyone think it will be before every Harry Potter fan realizes this set exists and the few remaining unopened boxes soar through the roof, and any predictions on how high they will go?  Only 5000 boxes, and it seems that most collectors are going after a few cases in hopes of a master set, and I don't believe much of the general public is aware of this set even existing yet.  Just us adicts that visit the forums.  Smiley

The only drawback with the boxes is if you buy just one - there is a chance of getting nothing of interest.

There is a better chance of getting 2 items of interest though.

I don't know that I'd ever pay more than £70 a box for something that may be empty - and talking to sellers this week has given me the impression boxes may reach that much from them by the end of the week!

I would expect prices for boxes of PoA to reach their peak around Christmas time. As more people become aware of the product thru finding Chamber & Philosopher, they will want to work backwards just like people did with LOTR.

I'm holding onto mine until it reaches £100+

How many are you keeping sealed CJD?

The thing is with this set that LOTR always had a "craziness" life of 3 years/films... whereas there are 2 more films with books ready and 2 more books and films after that!

Wehay - I'm In! I reckon anything Harry Potter will rise in price as it is a global phenomen, a bit like Disney stuff. Also new kids are always discovering the books. A great card to include in one of the next sets would be a JK Rowling auto card.

Ooh - that's something I had not even contemplated!

She warns on her website that there are a lot of fake autos out there (many of us have been through this with the sigs of the LOTR cast);

But this would be a way for her to let her fans get her auto without worries (and she says she's far too busy and important to sign books any more  Angry )

But that would definitely be spiffy - a JK card - if she did 30 of those like the Pear Tree card then boy would Gimli's wallet be in trouble !!!

Info on her website can be found here:

I think Artbox are going to come down to earth with a bit of a bump on the next set if they release it so quickly. I've already forfeited ROTK Update for this set( I'll collect it slowly over a few years costume card at a time like the olden days!). So many pockets have hole's burnt in 'em the size of that crater thingy in New Mexico that they will not be able to afford another such release. Personally, I would have wished no card to have a less than 300 print run, it ceases to be collecting then - it is binge buying! It is out of control!

I really think it will be quite a while before prices really go sky high, until the philosophers stone comes out and/or the supply decreases.
I still can't believe that there are only 500 cases made!!

Just think we may all have jumped on the next "Topps Fotr hobby box" gold mine!?!?

I think you are right. Artbox would have done their homework ( if not their underachieving website!) and known that the excreble Philosopher's Stone release by Wizards of the Coast was a complete failure. They therefore did not want to overdo things with case numbers. Seeing the success of what, lets be honest, is a beautifully made set, I reckon their Chamber of Secrets numbers could be higher. They sell bulk, and do not make money on the secondary market. It would make sense for them to say,we sold 500 cases no sweat, lets double our numbers next time - I would!

Well after a week and a half some boxes just cleared $100, (actually ending at $118)  So they are definetly moving up really fast

I really think they will clear $150 within a month.  They are just too short printed and too loaded with high valued cards.   We shall see!!!

Gooday mates,
Posting from the other side of the pond, Would you consider $90 a good price for Sealed hobby boxes.  I just bought four, it sucks to have bought on last Sunday for $68 and One Tues for $80.  Skyrocketting.  The funny thing is you could buy most of the cards for less than a box, except the props 200 or less or case topper inserts.  Would you hold on to boxes or open???  I am trying to put the LOTR costume set together and it seems that it would be cheaper to buy all the cards than take a chance with a box and get a Sam Travel Jacket you can get for $10.  Is anyone willing to trade LOTR costumes for HP??

I have enjoyed reading posts on this site the last couple days as no one on this side of the pond seems to have a clue on the HP cards! Cool

I tried to hold back two boxes to sell later but could not resist opening them up - I was not disappointed - I got a Sirius auto, a Hermoine auto and a Black Pepper Imps prop card from just these two boxes! Open! Open! Open! Tongue
