500 each might be a bit strong.  Some, like Martinez, may do 1000 but for the Star Wars series there have been artists that do less than 100 as well.  I wouldn't be surprised to see 2000 hobby cases of this one though. 

The retail being completely different might be interesting as well.  I know my pre-orders so far are about equal numbers for retail VS hobby.  Some of the 'costume' cards might be incredibly hard to find.

As for sketches, I'd agree with Ed - there are already several artists who say their doing far less than 500 sketches (and love the fact that everyone's doing XX6 - must be the infamous 6 Topps lets them keep I so wish they'd find a way to mark the non-pack inserted sketches differently from the pack-inserted sketches. I know I'm a freak, but I value my pack-inserted sketches differently (not better or worse per se, but differently) than I do my convention gotten ones...

Not a clue as of yet.  And, if things like King Kong and other Topps sets are used as an example, we might not know until the first box is cracked and somebody posts the details on the wrapper.

I don't buy direct from Topps (they require sports card purchases as well, and I'm not going there...) so I don't have any kind of contact with Topps at all.

As for who they listen to, apparently nobody or they'd do some things differently.  I know my distributors have trouble getting any information from them beyond what is on the sell sheets they send out.

Topps? Listen to people? That's the funniest thing I've heard all year  Hate to say it, but I like the Agent Elrond card. I won't be angry if I pull it!!!

I'm not sure how or why Topps is allowing the Burger King king on a LOTR sketch card. And, I hate those ads to boot, so blech on that.

Though, I must say, the Hodges, Cummens and Kayanan all have me drooling

My husband and I thought we were the only ones who found the Burger King creepy.   It's nice to know we aren't alone.

I have yet to purchase any LOTR boxes, but I'm starting to get interested in this set.

I just checked out the site that RupT posted.  Have you all seen the sketches by Rafael Kayanan?!   Those are amazing! 
I don't normally like cartoon LOTR, but the Grant Gould sketches are just wonderful.  I absolutely love his stuff.

I was looking over some of the Sith sketches and noticed that some of the scans are cards that were returned to the artist and not included in packs.  A few of them (can't remember who the artist was) were full color sketches and REALLY good.  I wonder why Topps sent them back?  Is there certain criteria for the pack inserted cards?

From what I know, Topps allows each artist to submit for approval 6 additional sketches which are then sent back to the artist for the artist to do with what they please (as long as they don't alter the approved image). Generally coloring a card doesn't alter the approved image. The artists, to my knowledge, identify in advance which 6 sketches they want back.

Hi folks, regarding the 6 cards, we can request which ones we want back, or, they may also be ones that didn't get the stamp of approval. They are typically used for commissions. Well, it seems that the Burger King sketch and other posted by Mr. Martinez were prank sketches - not at all what he submitted to Topps. So, I suppose we'll have to withold judgement on his work until we actually see it.
