Which cards have variants?

Which are your favorite variants?

I know the following:

C8/Cedric has black, yellow, or black & yellow
C10/Fleur has blue or silver
C11/Harry has black or burgandy

Ci3/Daily Prophet has multiple

P01/Irish Flag has green or silver
P03 has multiple
P04 has multiple
P06 has plain orange or writing
P07 has various colors - blue, green, brown, multiple colors, etc.
P09 has white or black or writing
P10 has multiple
P11 has plain or writing

Jackie pointed out that C8 has two versions of yellow, one with a tight weave and the other with a looser weave, so this card has 4 versions.

For C14, I've seen red, black and red & black.

For C4, I saw an auction for a black and purple swatch, so I'm assuming there are black and purple ones as well.

I have two purple, one with a vertical crease and one with a horizontal crease.

Deep purple. Hold it at an sngle and let the light bounce off it.

I am pretty sure my C4 is black.  How purple is the purple?

It's a really deep purple! It's hard for me to tell the difference!!  :P

Ryan says ours is purple.  He must have better eyes than me :P

And unfortunately, they don't turn up the right color in a scan :-\, or I would tell you to scan them and let me see.

Hold your card in natural sunlight and tilt it.  I thought mine was black, but when I tilted it and the light hit it right, the swatch was purple.  There's something about velvet that looks dark from one angle, but the color pops through from another angle.

As for Maxime, I held mine to light and tilted it.  It looks more like a burgandy/brown to me, but my husband says it is purple...so I guess I can go with that ;)

Thanks Mike  ;D  I never even thought of the badge on the front but that makes the card even better  ;D.  And those books  :o :o.  I had assumed they were all plain.  Now for me being me time.  Has anyone got a picture of the front of Hermione's book so we can match the book swatches?

I had thought this set was very thin on the ground when it came to variants but it seems they were just slow to appear.  Keep 'em coming  ;D

I've been searching for a picture of Hermione's book, but haven't found anything yet.  The Leaky Cauldron site had a great picture gallery, but they've redone it and now it's terrible!  There are still a ton of pictures, but it's very difficult to use.  For instance, all of the GOF screencaps are in reverse order from the movie and you can advance only one page at a time.  You can't skip ahead and if you select a picture, you can't go back to the page that had that thumbnail.  It starts you back at page 1!  It took me 20-30 minutes to advance to the last page (the beginning of the movie) and I couldn't stop to look at any picture because then I would have had to start all over again.

Anyway, that's a long-winded way of saying that I haven't been able to locate any good shots.  We've seen so many different colors and variants that it's a bit hard to believe they all came from one book.  We don't even know which one it could be.  I went back to the GOF book and there's no mention of Hermione reading a book during that scene.

Congrats Anna and Jackie for your black/yellow striped Cedric (and me for my pull).  ;D  The one on ebay ended with $116.  :o  Oh, and i'm sorry, a new forum member has been overbidden.  :'(

There is only a Master Set from GOF (not GOFU) for this price. And one of GOFU for $3,995 but 3 cards missing (of the 25 case incentives).  8)

Hi Paul,

The auction link you posted is for almost a master set.  As Thomas (Tower) posted above, this set is missing 3 of the 4 25-case incentives: Ci4a (Harry), Ci4c (Fleur) and Ci4d (Viktor).  This set only shows incentive Ci4b (Cedric).

And it' still $1,000 more than you posted.  8)  ;)

So let's call it the Almost Utimate Master Set (1 of a possible 28!!! or would that be 1 out of 112 ?)...I still think from other set sales in the past (except SS which I don't know) That all others sets that I know were sold with all cards offered in the set,  incentives and all...if the other past sets had you a 25 case insentive card then you really did have a Master set.....the good news for me is that when I put my 2 wand cards finally up for sale that there will at least 10-15 people with at least 1 Wand card looking for it's mate..and another 50 that would be gob smacked just to have one in their set...Maureen

Well, a friend finally helped me get a box o'this, and while it wasn't the best box in the world  ::), it did have one card of note. Now, this isn't as impressive a Cedric varient as the ones we've seen with bits o'the Hogwarts shield or parts o'the name from the back, but I still like it for the simple varient it is:

We've seen a lot of variants for the Weasley tent.  I found this set picture at The Leaky Cauldron.  I'm beginning to wonder if some of the material comes from the furniture as well as the drapery.

The Fleur costume was particularly nice - it looked like the gold lettering from her initials 'FD'.  ;)

Ya, the Fleur was fun, after seeing "C10" like 20 times, its great to flip one over that looks like that :)    And the stadium banners card is so bright and pretty in person, and yes it is covered in paint that is cracked, really cool.  The Fleur is scheduled ot hit ebay this Wednesday, along with a bunch of other nice cards. :)

I'm ALWAYS interested in looking at varients.  Nice pulls, Zach!

that's just the nature of the beast i suppose.  i got what i wanted for it so good luck to him.

I think that the last one of these sold for between $400 and $500.

The C10 varient is very rare, and I would have put a similar price on it if i had won the card.

Have a look at the Charmed Phoebe costume they have for sale.  Boggy pointed that out to me a few days ago.  They bought it for half the price they now have it up for - if memory serves they had it back up for sale only a day or two after they bought it.  I have noticed more and more people doing this - buying cards for an immediate turn around rather than for their collection.  Don't get me wrong, I am not moaning (well not too much  ;) ) as it is an open market and if people can see a profit ......  I do think some are going to be in for a mighty big fall though.  Card collectors are people not bottomless wallets and there are only a limited number of 'big' spenders out there.  I can see the price of cards going up so much that people can't get complete sets and just give up on them altogether.

i'm a bit gutted i sold it now :'(  all i have now is a plain blue swatch.

another varient i remember seeing on  :ebay: was a blue Karkaroff variation.  This sold for a high price also for a high numbered card.  all the others are white, where does the blue come from??  can't remember if this was update or the original set.

That card must be an error.  I have a similar error for the Beaubaton Card.

It has the Karkaroff material instead of the blue material.  Artbox veried the card was and error.

Well, that's pretty cool.  I've seen the blue Karkaroff, but not the white Beaubaton.  8)

Thanks for showing the two different cards with the same swatch material............finally !!!!!!!! I said it months ago and I'll say it again...the blue Karkoff was an error card...as in this one is also an error card...Hey Terry you can sell it for $450..if you list it and claim that without this error card....no wait I mean variant you can't have a true master set....just like the  Blue Karkoff listing...the'll  be busting down your door with cash in hand wanting to get it....Maureen

To me it makes no difference. It's still a variation on the norm... it's just not a "special" bit of costume (patch, seam etc.) which we have come to associate with the word variant. I don't think that it sold at the price because it was described as a "variant", and I don't think that the OP will be selling anyway.

I hate to differ on this one with you Roz but that Karkoff blue card did sell at that price ...because the word Variant was all over the listing...remember the listing with quotes of.... only 2 ever seen both in the U.K./can't be a true master set without it.......in the listing nowhere did I ever see the word ERROR on that listing...THIS IS where the discussion started was it a true variant or a true error
In the sense of card collecting sports or nonsports...a variant card is something that is completely different...but should be on the card
An error card is something that wasn't suppose to be on the card, or has nothing to do with that particular card....like swatches or printing for that matter

The blue Karkaroff and White Beauxbatons cards are clearly mistakes, but it sort of makes them different, I guess...I had gotten a GOF filmcard that had two filmcells one on top of the other, both of Hermione--the weird part...one was a close up of Hermione in GOF, the other was of Hermione in her pink sweater from POA.  ???  I wound up keeping it because it was different.  :-\

Didnt the GOF trailer have clips from the earlier three movies, showing the "growing up" of the characters? That would explain the two different Hermione pics...

I had a little Google to define variant.  There was loads of definitions but here are a couple -

A slightly different version of a figure, typically found in smaller numbers than its standard counterpart. Can either be due to a change in production, such as the three Jean Grey figures from the X-Men movie line, or a specific choice on the part of the manufacturer, such as the yellow and brown Daredevil from Spider-Man Classics Series II.

Bottom line is that the blue Karkaroff and White Beauxbatons are a slightly different versions of the original.  How that occured is neither here nor there, provided they haven't been tampered with post production.  And I will bet my eye teeth that there is not one serious collector on the Shack who would have returned either of these cards to Artbox for them to replaced with 'correct cards'.  I would have loved to have pulled either of these cards and congratulate whoever has them in their collection now.  No they are not essential for a master set but I certainly don't blame the seller for putting this in their Ebay listing - how many times have you seen the ultra rare Lupin Shirt up for sale  ;).

I tried offering all sorts of things to Graham for the Arwen - huge quantities of money, his own personal cartoonist (yes, Britain might have been the one to abolish slavery, but I was ready to start it again :P) etc. but he wasn't for budging ;D

Variant, variation, or error -- In the end, does it really matter?  If someone is willing to pay any given amount for a card that's different from the norm, more power to 'em.

Well, I bought it off of ebay as a varient.  Would you believe I only paid a BIN price of $21.95?  I think it's a nice addition to my collection.  Artbox offered to replace it, but I already had both the light blue and the dark blue, so I decided to keep it.

Very smart move.

Those film cells are brilliant.  I can now see how they would be the transition scenes, very rare  ;D ;D

I was looking for variants at the time and was emailing Richard (cardvault) about specific variants and I brought up the Igor costume card that had the blue swatch. I had only seen one on ebay scousse691, was the seller. I questioned the legitimacy of the card because there is no visible blue in the costume. He then stated that he had one as well. I then emailed Tom Breyer and asked him if he knew anything about blue being in the costume or if he knew of any errors in production. Tom then contacted artbox and artbox said it had to be an error in production.

After several emails back and forth between myself, Richard and Tom; I guess Richard decided to listed the card as BIN on ebay, possibly to see if I or someone else would pay that much for it. I bought it out of curiosity. It was of course the dark blue material from the beauxbatons uniform. In light of what I have paid for some of my "variants" - it wasn't that bad of a deal. I believe the one scouse sold went for around 210 USD.

Think its interesting that there is a beauxbatons card with the Igor material. Wouldn't be interested in selling it would you? 8)

I consider my card an error, not a variant. I bought it specifically because it was an error and there were not many of them; only 2 that I know of. I agree its not required for the set to be a master set. :)

I think that TerryW's demonstrates that somewhere the Karkaroff and Beaubatons costumes got mixed up, and I think you are both very lucky to own them :)

Well I did make a PM offer. Which she did turn down.  :'( I don't blame her I wouldn't sell it either. Although I have found someone who has an Igor card that has the light blue beauxbatons material.  ;D Just bought it.  8) and not nearly for what I paid for the one I already have or what I offered TW.

I have to ask how and where do you dind these people who have such unusual cards.

Oh you can ask Terry but you won't get an answer.....that's up to the individual to tell you the contacts they have built up over the years now

A lot of variants end up on eBay.  There are also dealers who have websites.  It takes some patience and perseverance to find them, but the effort is worth it in the long run. :)

The Igor light blue error card I found on a card web site called toywiz.com the same seller I got the Sorcerer's Stone wizard candy card of the Exploding BON BON with the face of the the little man in it.  Most of the variants I get are by ebay but now and then after literally hours of searching google for web sites outside of ebay; I have come across the rare good variant. I got my book of monsters variant with small portion of the title from a guy called emainstreetscards or something like it. there is definitely emainstreet in the name of the site. I got a really good variant of the COS C10 Hermione costume (scarf with white pink and blue) for an extremely low price off another small site.
