: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Trey July 17, 2005, 07:58:37 AM
So what do you all think will happen in Book 7.....

Please only read and post here if you have finished HBP otherwise there may be major spoilers!!!

: Re: What do you think will happen in book 7- for those who have finished HBP
: Trey July 17, 2005, 08:08:19 AM
I will start.....

I think that Harry will find all the Horcruxes...and will destroy them which of course includes destroying voldemort. Harry, Ron, Herm and Ginny will survive....and they will all live happily ever after (well as happy as they can considering the circumstances)

I think that one of Voldemorts Horcruxes may be Godric Gryffindors sword (just a hunch, but I think that may have been the reason voldemort visited dumbledores office asking for a job)

I think that dumbledore did in fact split his soul in two and his horcrux is in Fawkes the Pheonix (this relates to Harry seeing the pheonix in the white smoke around DDs body) this will in turn result in harry recieving help from fawkes...I dont feel that DD has left harry completely

I think that Ron, Hermione and members of the Order will help harry to find and destroy the horcruxes. But the battle between harry and voldemort will not feature anyone else.

I think that Snape will die. It will either be revealed that he is still good and was acting under DDs instructions to kill him (I hope this is so) and he will die in the process of saving/helping harry. Or he will still be evil and Harry will kill him.

hmmm thats all I can think of for now  :D

Totally feel the same about the Dumbledore using the horcruxes and also about it being fawkes, its ties well with Dumbledore telling Harry about Nagini (using animals) I would love to see that happen anyway, that would make him and gandalf quite alike lol kinda

Actually thinking about it how can this happen. I thought you have to commit murder to be able to use the horcruxes, Dumbledore hasn't has he, maybe he has just...died  :'(

I wonder if the order of the phoenix can still use harry's house now that the secret keeper is dead and that snape knows about the place.

I also think there is something more to DD dying not quite sure what but it is there and i loved the part about the centuers and the merpeople coming to pay there respect .

I also think that ron and hermione and harry are not going to let malfoy go unpunished but i think that voldermort is going to punish draco for not completing the task that he was set.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Choice of Lúthien July 17, 2005, 01:39:15 PM
Now I remember the other similarity I saw with LOTR. Harry obviously wants revenge. Obviously Voldemort for killing his parents, and then Beatrix for kiling Sirius and now Snape (I'm sure he wouldn't mind Malfoy out of the way either). But is Harry capable of killing anyone? As I believe Snape said "you have to mean it". I'm thinking of LOTR and Bilbo and then Frodo both showing pity on and not killing Gollum and how Frodo not killing helped him resist the ring. Similarities in Star Wars also...killing can lead to the dark side.
So how is Harry going to deal with this??
Book 7 must end, or almost end, with the final battle between Harry and Voldemort, and (I hope) Harry winning.
And I agree that Dumbledore's part hasn't finished yet...
I'm expecting Neville to play a large role in the final book.
And of course, who is RAB???? I honestly can't think of any guesses but it seems rather important.  ???

Grimmauld Place just has to be the center of activities in Book 7, that's going to have to be where Harry is living and working out of. He can visit Godric Hollow, but he's not going to _live_ there.

I also think there is something more to DD dying not quite sure what but it is there and i loved the part about the centuers and the merpeople coming to pay there respect .
I think you'll see some more out of _two_ Dumbledores. Brother Aberforth (though unnamed) kept popping up, what, three or four times in Book 6?

I also think that ron and hermione and harry are not going to let malfoy go unpunished but i think that voldermort is going to punish draco for not completing the task that he was set.
I don't think we've seen the last of Narcissa, so I think the fear Draco has to protect his family will be used again. I expect he won't be having any more fun than Wormtail.

I predict that there are two other characters besides Voldemort who have been 'saved' with horacruxes. I'm hoping for three, because Harry could use some of Sirius' advice in the final battle, but I'll probably be disappointed.

And we might not have seen all of the brothers-and-sisters connections. Just in and about the Hollow, Percy's being set up for a major role, Ginny has some immunity from COS and will probably win a battle, and we haven't explored the new side of Bill ...

Dumbledores patronus is a Phoenix, which is why I thought we saw it. Its some representaion of the person maybe a preprestation of thier soul. But then aren'r Phoenixs immortal....

Sorry to double post but I forgot a very important point. How is Harry going to kill Voldemort? I really don't think he could kill someone even him. Hero's don't kill. How's she going to get around that one  :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: ferdinand_the_yak July 17, 2005, 10:11:41 PM
I think we are on the wrong track with Dumbledore using Horcruxes. As Ben pointed out, you need to kill to make one. And from the way Dumbledore was describing them to Harry, it didn't seem like he would use that sort of magic, which I daresay is a very Dark form of magic.

And what are these 'powers' that McG described in Philosophers Stone that DD was 'too noble to use them'?

My conspiracy theory - it was Aberforth and not Dumbledore who died :-\

I am sure another big character will die :'( we get at least 2 years to prepare for the next, this one was bad enough and I still hadn't gotten over Sirius - this will take even longer :'(:'(:'(:'(:'(

The Leaky Cauldron is reporting that ITV broadcasted the JK interview done by its contest winner.  Among the highlights:

Ravenclaw will have their day.

Wormtail will not kill Lupin.

Starting tomorrow, TLC will begin posting the interview conducted by one of its editors, which will have a lot more info. :)

Ow just found an interesting quote

"There’s an important kind of redemptive pattern to Snape
JKR: He, um, there’s so much I wish I could say to you, and I can’t because it would ruin. I promise you, whoever asked that question, can I just say to you that I’m slightly stunned that you’ve said that and you’ll find out why I’m so stunned if you read Book 7. That’s all I’m going to say."

From J.K. Rowling interview transcript, The Connection (WBUR Radio), 12 October, 1999

Oh good. I didn't like the "hint" that the Gryffindor-Ravenclaw horacrux had to be the G-sword, since I didn't see any opportunity for Riddle to get his hands on it when he visited. Jo did hit us over the head with DD saying "you'll understand why he visited after we see the final memory" ... so it seems we're supposed to know that the unidentified item was related to that visit.

Wormtail will not kill Lupin.

Great, I was happy to see Fenris to show up so that we would have a different use for the silver hand.

I want to know what Dumbledore saw when he was drinking the green liquid in the cave.  He seemed like he was trying to protect students in his vision.

I've been very worried by the fact Harry isn't going back to Hogwarts (even if its open). And now I am even more worried. When asked before if there would be any more books after book seven JK said probably not but never say never. Now in a Time intervew she says;

On writing the Harry Potter books:

Rowling is about to say goodbye to a very good friend: Half-Blood Prince is book six of a planned seven, and then that's all she wrote. "I'll be so sad to think I'll never write a Harry-Ron-Hermione sentence again," she says. But her feelings aren't entirely unmixed. "Part of me will be glad when it's over. Family life will become more normal. It will be a chance to write other things."

I'm really worried Harry's going to snuff it in book 7 :'(

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

Thats what I thought too... Voldemort described himself to Harry and the DEs at the end of GoF as being 'ripped from limb to limb' (something like that) when he tried to kill Harry. Maybe he accidentely left a bit of his soul behind in this process and that is why Harry has such a knack for powerful bits of magic and a talent for Dark magic when he attempts it.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola July 18, 2005, 03:55:45 PM
And he had killed Harry's parents so theres your killing. Oh my god I so do not want that to be true as Harry WILL have to kill himself.

Wild theory time  ;D

Firstly I think Dumbledore was a  horacrux, not Harry or the sword.  I think Dumbledore suspected he had been used all along but that his memory had been altered.  When he finally confirmed that Voldemort had split his soul he realised this and knew that he would have to die, in order to save Harry, at some point.

This is where the 'good' Snape comes into it, because I think he is good.  Snape took the unbreakable vow in order to find out about the plot (although this didn't work as neither Bellatrix, Narcissa or Draco would tell him). But he was willing to risk his life to find out.  When he told Dumbeldore about the vow I believe Dumbledore made Snape promise to keep his vow, no matter what the consequences.  This way Dumbeldore saved Draco and Snapes life.  When Dumbedore begged Snape at the end I think this was to keep his promise, not to spare his life.  Remember the arguement in the forest?  Once Snape realised what he had to do he wanted to back out but, just like Harry, Dumbeldore held Snape to his word.

I think this is why Snape got so angry with Harry calling him a coward; he had just had to do the hardest thing in his life, kill Dumbeldore.

One puzzelling thing that I can't work out - Dumbledore knew the DADA teaching post was cursed so why give it to someone he obviously liked?  Curious

I don't think Dumbledore created a  horacrux.  Not because I don't think he ever killed anyone, I think in his time Dumbeldore killed plenty of people (albeit bad ones).  But he didn't believe life was worth living in this way.  If he had wanted imortality he could have used the Philophosers Stone.  He had access and didn't mind being dependant on other.

Anyway this is the first of, I am sure, many wild guesses  ;D

Maybe Voldemort doesn't knw that he did it - perhaps he had not made 7 yet and intended to after killing the Potters.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

Maybe the more I think about it the more it makes sense though. Harrys powers parceltonge the connection last year. I just hope he can get rid of it wthout killing himself. Thinking about it they manged to kill the HC in the diary and the ring without destorying them completely. And if you have two souls and get hit by an AK do both die or only one? I really want him to live.

I agree as I've actually had the same thoughts on the first. I was rereading part of that chapter and that really struck me. Snape was really angry that Harry called him a coward. Sure he would be insulted no matter what side he was on, but if he had no choice but to kill Dumbledore, being called a coward would be almost unbearable. Hard to hear and not be able to tell Harry the truth (assuming he was acting on orders from Dumbledore). Hmm...I'm prepared to believe that Snape is a bad guy, but there are certainly clues such as this that suggest things might not be so black and white.

As for the DADA position, well, Dumbledore needed to have someone other than Snape teaching potions so that Harry could take it. Having Snape take the DADA position only made sense then, and its not like Snape didn't want it. Harry needed to be able to take potions and he also needed to get a hold of the HBP's potion book. Why? Unclear. I don't think we will really know the significance of the book, Harry using it and Snape being the HBP until book 7.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Sharon July 18, 2005, 07:23:37 PM
Do you think this was a DD cunning plan then?  To make Harry believe he wasn't taking Potions so he didn't buy any books.  Then making sure Horace, an old friend, just happened to give Harry Snapes old book.  Why would DD want Harry to take potions so desperately?  He could have forced Snape to accept Harry.

Ooooo I hadn't thought of any of this  ;D

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: siriusdogstar July 18, 2005, 11:42:00 PM
What I hope will happen :)

Dumbledore will find someway of overcoming his predicament (!)  Of course, he can still direct Harry from his portrait in his office but if Harry won't be there it won't do him a lot of good.

Harry will find a way of regenerating his mother and father and Sirius.  Time-turner perhaps?

Severus Snape will make good his boast of being able to 'put a stopper in death' (PS) with regard to Dumbledore.

Lupin and Tonks will marry after Lupin has seen off Fenrir with the help of Wormtail and his silver hand (maybe).

Malfoy will eat dirt permanent.

Griffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw will combine forces with Harry against Voldemort and Slitherin and clean up the planet permanently.

Voldemort will get wopped without anyone else getting hurt.

Ron and Hermione will be a serious item and will risk life and limb to save Harry.  They will name their first child Harry Potter Weasley.

Harry and Ginny will 'ride off into the sunset' at the end.

What I think will happen:

Dumbledore has gone for good.

The only way Harry can meet his parents is to go where they are since Jo has made it abundantly clear Lily and James can't come to were he is, therefore Harry will die.  That way he can meet up with Sirius too so everyone but Ron, Hermione and Ginny will be happy, unless they cop it too in which case everybody (well, nearly everybody including me) will be happy.

Draco will die mostly because he's a coward and nobody but Pansy Parkinson and his mother like him.  His father doesn't seem that keen.  This does, however, make a big hole in another of my theories as Harry will also have to put up with him for Eternity as well.  Unless, of course, there is a Wizard Heaven and Hell but perhaps that is a bit heavy for a Harry Potter novel.  Still, anyone who can invent Quiddich should be able to figure that one out.

Lucius will reappear and die doing something horrible.

I can't decide yet which side Snape is on.  I tend toward the 'good guy' side.  Whatever, his role will be pivotal. He owes Sirius a favour anyway (saving his life from a rampant Lupin - don't know if that cancels out James being a prat).  He might save Harry for Lily's sake - she defended him publicly against James in the pensieve.  Also, he made the correct concoction for Lupin at the full moon and swapped the Veritaserum for something else for Harry in OOTP.  I also agree that pleading is not Dumbledore's MO with regards to his own death - he is far more likely to plead on someone else's behalf.  As Harry is the 'light of his life', I would guess it would be him.

Further to the above paragraph, Snape will save Harry at the risk of his own life.

Whatever else happens, one thing is clear - there will be an EX-VOLDEMORT!!!!   If not, Jo can always write another series beginning 'The Heir of Voldemort and the ....' then everyone will be happy (with the possible exception of Harry).

What if Snapes Boggart is his father! And it seems his dad was a muggle so why the arugment in OoTP in his memory why didn;t she just turn him into a frog. I might have remembered it wrong.

I love Sharon's theory that Snape killed DD on DD's orders and that he is still good.  he did so much good in the past that it doesn't all add up. I want him to be good too.  And I definitely think DD knwe he was going to die.  He seemed to know everything Snape and Malfoy was up to.

Ollivandor is still missing.  Stan Shunpike is still in Azkaban.  Well, what happened to Ollivandor?  Will Stan get out?

Also, if JK does NOT kill off Harry in the end, do you think all three characters could porribly survive?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: EmmasOneandOnly July 25, 2005, 11:15:03 PM
I think that Harry will again have a short stay at the Dursleys, then visit Godrics Hollow with both Ron and Hermione then set off for Grimauld(?) Place.

The whole story will be Harry trying to get all the Horacrux. I think he will recuret Ron and Hermione which, in the procces, causes one of them to get hurt which makes Harry go off on his own where he finds Voldemort so starts the Fianl Battle. I think Harry will get hurt in the battle, VERY Badly like lose an arm or a leg. Then Dumbledore will show up run Voldemort off and then tell Harry that Dumbledore did have a Horacrux and that is was Harry that was his Horacrux (He never said a person couldnt be one ;) )

Voldemort will die because Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Dumbledore will all team up and together their all powerfull.

I dont know what Dumbledores black hand could be. Being burned, meeting Peter or Voldemort while trying to get one of the Horacrux :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: rns91294 July 26, 2005, 12:24:11 AM
He said the hand was burned because a curse was placed upon the ring.  I think this happened when he was trying to get rid of the horcrux.

I like your theory of Dumbledore coming back because Harry was his Horcrux, but this is dark magic and is something I can't see Dumbledore doing.  I think he is probably gone for good, so that Harry would have to finish the job Dumbledore sarted on his own, which is to search for the horcruxes. Just my opinion though.

I didn't think DD would kill someone, there is a connect between Grindlewald and it seems WWII wasn't it also the 40s when Voldemort started getting powerful?

It says 1943 as the death of the Riddles (although can't be taken as solid evidence as his fathers name seems wrong) however if that is the date, thats right in the middle of WWII  :-\

my thoughts on Dumbledore is that JKR has said before that we would find out why there are Ghosts in the wzarding world. I would think the easiest way for dumbledore to come back to help harry is as a Ghost!! as for Dumbledore having a Horcrux I would not like to see that as it would mean DD would use dark magic and be prepared to use the death of another for personal gain. DD is a great wizard who had a standard to which he lived and wanted Harry to live.

Ok I finnaly understand the Second World War. It was all Gindlewald's fault. He put an Imperious curse on Hilter (and others) and made them do all that. What better way to get rid of muggles than an all out war. Millions of muggles died if Grindly was like Voldy he'd have loved that and someone else was getting the blame. Thats it it all makes sense now, maybe Hilter did himself in when Grindly was deafeted and he realised what he had done ;D

I have a funny feeling I wouldn't get very high marks on my exam for this  :-\

Plus: When Harry came back to the common room and the Fat Lady said the password had changed at midnight, saying Harry could take it up with the Headmaster but he didn't think DD was back -- it was Nearly Headless Nick who said the Bloody Baron let him know that Dumbledore had returned, but was worn out ("not surprisingly" or something like that). I think that might mean that Dumbly was already working with the ghosts on part of his long-term plan!

Totally wild theory time  ;D

Snape is Voldemorts grandson  :o  The two reasons I have for believing this at the moment are:

1.  Snapes mum.  The desciption of her was very much like Voldemorts mum, except for the cross eyes.  It could be the Gaunt gene had come out, being more powerful than the muggle Riddle DNA

2.  Voldemort trusts Snape.  I can understand goody two shoes Dumbledore giving Snape a second (and third) chance but why Voldemort?  I know all the things he said to Bellatrix but some of that doesn't ring true.  I thing Voldemort is the shoot first ask questions later type.

Anyway I now have two years to think of loads of other reasons that Snape is Voldys grandson and hopefully I will have convinced a few other people by then  ;D

wild thoery number 2

book seven is going to start at hogwarts because in every other book when see harry back on the wizard express and meeting up with the dursleys i think more will happen at hogwarts before harry leaves .

What do you think it will be a straight carry on, so the new book takes up on the same day as the funeral.  That would be different and totally unexpected  8)

I have just found on another site a person that correctly posted who the half blood prince was last year.  Here's hoping that in two years time one of these wild theories will have as much success  ;D

I dont think DD would ever create a horcrux because remember it is very dark magic and DD wouldnt do that. But I still dont truly believe he is dead.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: emmafan July 31, 2005, 11:13:30 AM
I think it is certain that DD knew (or at least felt) he would die before Voldemort would be defeated.  Towards the end of book 6, particularly in the cave, he continuouly exclaimed how important Harry was.  At one point he went as far to say that he felt safe because he was in the company of Harry.  He realized that it would be Harry who would have to defeat Voldemort.  However, I don't think that DD would leave Harry ill-equipped.  Undoubtably, DD collected some amazing treasures and books during his lifetime.  I have a feeling that at the start of the next book, Harry will 'inherit' or recieve word that DD left him some of these collections and ideas.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: emmafan July 31, 2005, 11:15:47 AM
I think I remember reading somewhere that J.K. said something to the effect that, book 6 and 7 were almost one big whole book split in two.  I am sure that the next book will pick up right where this one left off, especially considering this book didn't have the feeling of semi-closure that the last 5 have had.  By that, I mean, their was at least a big fight or event.  This, in my opinioin, was more of a downpoint leading toward a triumphant finish.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: emmafan July 31, 2005, 11:23:05 AM
Sorry, I'm posting these seperately because they are concepts independent of each other and I don't want them to be misconstrued.

I do think that the unknown R.A.B. will be important.  I have a feeling that Harry will run into him or seek him out somehow.  Who else would have the knowledge that Voldemort would have developed the Horcreux?  Dumbledore had made a comment that he was the only person with such intimate knowledge of Riddle's young life.  So it must be a traitor Death Eater?

As it is, Harry would have no idea how to find the remaining Horcreuxs.  One will probabaly be in the orphanage, as it seems that Voldemort left them in imporatant  areas of his growth.  It seems that DD showed Harry those memories for a reason.  Could we expect for him to find a Horcreux at each spot of the memories?

Undoubtably, as R.A.B. has taken one Horcreux, he must be a talented and intelligent wizard, or close enough to Voldemort to know his secrets.  Most likely, if he has taken one Horcreux, he would have gone after others.  Maybe Harry won't have to hunt down all four (but I believe the real locket to be destroyed), or R.A.B. will assist him.  Could R.A.B. be dead?  In that case could Harry find his journals or such?  Hmmm, more questions than perjections here.

I think Dumbledors BODY is gone but what about his picture. JK would have pointed it out so detailed if it wasnt part of a point. Maybe it will give him some advice or something...

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: EmmasOneandOnly July 31, 2005, 11:36:14 AM
I still think that Harry is, in a way or maybe is, Dumbledores Horcreux. I think he just said that you have to kill to have one because he wanted to tell Harry how Voldemort kills for a purpose not just for the heck of it. I think Dumbledore split it because he new that Harry was important and he might need him one day. He even might have been asked by James and Lyle to protect Harry like that after his birth :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: emmafan July 31, 2005, 11:57:02 AM
But it wasn't DD, but rather Slughorn, that informed us about how Horcreuxs may be made.  So DD could not have been protecting Harry, because he did not know for certain what Slughorn would say.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: emmafan July 31, 2005, 12:12:07 PM
Another thing I found EXTREMLY curious in this book compared to the last five.  In the previous installments, it had always seemed as if Harry would assume that he knew who was responsible for any wrongdoings or events.  Their would always be a twist ending and Harry would be proved wrong.  Meanwhile, in this installment, Harry hit everything right on the head.  Even down to when Malfoy would strike and that he was in the room of requirements at the time that Trelawny was knocked back.  It proved that DD was wrong in this case.  Perhaps Harry has become far more enlightened and will prove better in discovering the Horcreuxs.  All I know, is to never count out his ideas again.

Who knows if the remaining Horcruxes are still around? R.A.B may have destroyed more than one (assuming he destroyed the locket). I know it doesnt sound like that is the case given what the note says, but maybe, just maybe, Harry may have less work for him than he thinks...

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Roz August 01, 2005, 03:58:55 PM
Hmm that's a very good point. I hope you are right.

Someone said that Voldermort doesn't realise that anyone knows about his horcruxes.. I wonder how RAB found out? I'd be interested to know. Surely no matter how much he trusted his "servant" death eaters he'd never tell one of them, I suppose unless he requested (demanded?) their help in the creation of them.

Poor Sirius, he may not have realised just how "noble" the "noble house of Black" was after all.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

well wouldn't voldermort have told lucius malfoy what the dairy contained ???

( i love broadband first day of having it and it is fantastic |)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: kbmum August 01, 2005, 11:53:21 PM
Voldemort probably didn't tell Malfoy that the diary was a Horcrux, or Malfoy wouldn't have given a piece of Voldemort's soul to a "Mudblood" for any reason.

Now that I'm thinking about it, we know what happened when Harry destroyed the diary.  Did something similar happen when Dumbledore destroyed the soul in Gaunt's ring (which burned his hand and arm), and is that what Harry will have to face every time he destroys another Horcrux?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Nienna August 02, 2005, 03:24:01 AM
Well, we don't really 'know' the energy needed to make a Horcrux in the first instance only that someone has to die ... so I would imagine destroying one will release a similar amount of force/energy to that needed to make it in the first instance.
We don't know how DD managed to destroy the horcrux in the Gaunt ring do we, but my guess is that Harry will be placed in mortal dnger with each one he destroys, maybe even getting seriously hurt in the process. :-\
Book 7 promises to be a harrowing read I reckon ... :o

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: ferdinand_the_yak August 02, 2005, 10:21:59 AM
But Harry wasn't hurt at all when he destroyed the diary Horcrux, was he? I mean, his injuries came from the Basilisk, but the Riddle diary didn't do anything to the extent that happened with Dumbledore's hand. He just plunged the Basilisk fang in and the thing was destroyed... perhaps the one who is destined to kill Voldemort can destroy the Horcruxes without being hurt themselves?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Nienna August 03, 2005, 02:39:23 AM
hmmmmm that's an interesting theory Jo! I think the important thing here is how  did DD destroy the horcrux ... what magic and/or sacrifice did he have to make to get the job done?

Maybe Voldie passing some of his powers to Harry through his scar would have helped to shield Harry from the worst effects of the Diary's destruction??
Their wands share the same core though whether that was purely by accident or by design we may never know ... Ollivander is MIA ::)

Crickey ... we've got a looooooooong wait till find out the answers! :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: blackcat20 August 03, 2005, 05:23:28 AM
Do you think Voldemort et al would have taken Ollivander, to find out how to overcome the sister wand problem?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: kbmum August 03, 2005, 07:54:04 AM
That's an excellent theory!  I think that Ollivander went with the Death Eaters against his will.  He didn't join during the last war when Voldemort had more followers and his side was stronger, so why go now?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Nienna August 03, 2005, 02:30:41 PM
.... or maybe DD told Ollivander to get himself out of harm's way before Voldie and his minions got hold of all the wands AND his knowledge about Harry's wand in particular ....

... curious ... very ... curious ... :P

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Roz August 03, 2005, 03:25:36 PM
Of course the nice wizards could always alohomora at Ollivander's locks and then leave money for the wands they selected.... but they need the "wand chooser" - I know that the wand chooses the Wizard etc etc but Mr O was very helpful in that choosing ;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola August 08, 2005, 04:13:06 AM
How do they alohomora without a wand  :-\

Yes maybe Harrys 'connection' (I still think he's a horcurx) helps him.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Roz August 08, 2005, 08:07:30 PM
This is one thing I can't get over...how helpless they become without a wand. I find it odd that Dumbledore couldn't do anything to help himself against even little Malfoy without a wand, whereas underage wizards are always doing odd things without wands - like Harry and the dissappearing glass at the Zoo, and jumping up on top of buildings to get out of fights etc... it's not normal ;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola August 08, 2005, 08:11:01 PM
I think the wand is the focus although I am surely DD could do some magic without it although it would surely need a lot of concentration which might have been difficult in the circumstances. Didn't Harry do something without his wand once, I can't remember it wasn't in the ally with the dememtors ???

This is one of the reasons I think DD's death was either pre-planned or pre-ordained.  DD made no attempt to save himself, other than to talk Draco out of it.  It could have been because he was too weak from that green liquid he drank or it could have been an Obi Wan moment.  You know the 'strike me down and I will become more powerful.........' or words to that effect.

Oh and one dead sweet thing that happened today and I wasn't sure where else to put it.  My Dad has just started OotP.  He has got up to the detention part and is absolutely convinced Umbridge is Voldemort taking polyjuice potion!  I think that is just so sweet (and if you knew my Dad I bet you would too) and to his credit it was something I never considered at the time  ;D

I am confused.  Did that make him out to be a good guy or a bad guy?

But the whole Harry as a Horcrux makes sense to me.  I mean, she doesn't want to go on writing after book 7, right?  So what better way to assure that happens by killing Harry.  He would still be a hero, but would no longer be alive to write more books about him.  As sad as that is.

I was worried that it would mean Harry would have to die. But I think the horcruxs have to be sorted before LV can be killed. I hope she doesn't kill Harry. We should all sign a packed not to nag for more stories as long as Harry gets to live ;)

Oh Mike, don't get me wrong, I want him to live!!!  But then I would also want to know what becomes of him.  Although, if he dies, don't think I won't want to know what becomes of Ron and hermione ;)

Also, don't all the horcruxes have to be destroyed before LV can be killed?  If Harry is a horcrux, then he would have to die before  LV.  So who would kill LV?

Ok this is an old quote but, it gives a little hope  :o=

Rowling says she has the series all plotted out and intends to stop in 2003 with book seven, when Harry will be 18 and ready to graduate from Hogwarts. During the press club's question-and-answer session, Rowling received numerous queries about Harry's future, but she declined to answer. "I do know exactly what will happen, and I can't tell you about it," she told her eager audience. "At the moment, I definitely think I'll stop at No. 7.... It's going to feel like a bereavement. I think I'll be really heartbroken.

"The only reason I would write a book No. 8 is if I have a burning desire to do it, 10 years after the last book is published," Rowling added. "But I never say 'never,' because the moment I say I'll never do something, I do it the next month."

MacPherson, Karen. "'Harry Potter' goes to Washington," Post-Gazette National Bureau (Pittsburgh), October 21, 1999

Surely a book 8 would be hard if Harry were dead. But then there were some people who thought he would die in 6, personnally I'm not sure how interesting a book about a dead person would be  :P

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: EmmasOneandOnly August 12, 2005, 08:51:29 AM
I really like JK's Harry Potter Dictionary or whatever it was idea but I think after Voldemort dies the Magical world will be at piece. I hope JK fast a little foward maybe to Harry's 19th birthday to tell us wether he marrys Ginny or the person he fancys in book 7 but if he dies it would bug me till I die what happens to Voldemort, Hogwarts, The Wesleys, Hermione, everybody. Do they die to? Do they go on living in fear, in hiding? I'd rather it end with a good ending. No fairy tale wedding or something like that rubbish but with good defeating evil once and for all. I think Book 7 will be as thick as 5 because I'm sure she'll explain about his future in some way.

On her biograpghy I saw last month she already has the last chapter written and she said "All I'm going to show you is the notebook its in because this explains what happens to everybody after it all" so I think that will be a very long chapter, it was a very big notebook so that will be a dozy, and mostlikely the tear jerker of the series.

I cant really see 8 books because there is only 7 years at Hogwarts and what would number eight be Harry Potter and the Never Ending Series  I'll be heartbroken after it all to but I'm sure she'll have even better series in the future and we've always got the movie ;D

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

But even the thought of 8 shows hope for Harry ;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

Also, don't all the horcruxes have to be destroyed before LV can be killed?  If Harry is a horcrux, then he would have to die before  LV.  So who would kill LV?

Don't forget the diary and the ring survived the removal of the Horcrux, admittedly a little worse for wear, but maybe Harry could do the same.  I still truly hope he is not a Horcrux though; the holders for these have been truly evil - a cursed ring and a murderous diary - the thought of Harry having something so evil in him doesn't seem right  :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola August 13, 2005, 02:23:45 AM
Thats true they did survive just. But who said the ring and the diary where evil, surely it was just the soul inside them which was. I think its lucky Harry is a dencent lad or she could have got down the whole evil road;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: rns91294 August 13, 2005, 02:25:23 AM
and lets not forget that when LV tried to kill Harry, he transformed some of his "ailities" to him, like speaking Parseltongue.  So technically, if you look at it that way, Harry does have some evil in him.  It is LV's evil, but still evil.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: EmmasOneandOnly August 13, 2005, 02:40:07 AM
But what if that made Harry a Horcrux, I mean, he did just kill his parents. Maybe thats why his scar was always hurting. Maybe Voldemort was trying to find that other piece of his soul.

Predictions
1). Godric's Hollow will be the site of one Horcrux as it will be found to be the site/area where Godric Griffindor lived - possibly his house or a cave dwelling or one piece of his furniture

2). At least 1 Weasley will die - possibly Percy but more likely Molly

3). The trio will go to the wedding then the Dursleys then Grimmauld Place. At which point they will confide to Lupin and/or Tonks who convince them to go back to Hogwarts because of the still powerful incantantions on the schools to protect it against outside magic and beaucse Harry will have been left the Pensieve and other information in Dumbledore's will

4). Other members of the old DA will become involved and there is a chance that Neville's parents may be restored to sanity and health

5). Luna or Seamus may die in the midst of destroying one of the Horcruxes

6). Multiple battles at the end with 2 or more of the scooby gang attacking the snake. Somehow Snape and Wormtail will become involved and one will sacrifice himself to kill the snake. Harry and Voldemort battle but Hermione also attacks Voldemort thus allowing Harry to kill. The act of killing Voldemort will split Harry's soul and weakened by the fight he may well drift into a death-like coma to meet Sirius and Dumbledore and James and Lily

Probability  Low

::)  Hello, I would like to respond to the message that said that maybe Harry is the last horcruxe.  I believe that Harry's scar may be the last horcruxe. I also think that it will come down to maybe Neville having to "kill" harry inorder to destroy it, and ultimately kill voldemort.  Neville loves his parents and because of this love he will be more likely to be able to do what needs to be done. where as Hermione and Ron won't be able to kill harry or to attempt it because they love harry and neither have had voldemort directly harm one of their loved ones (besides bill). I also believe that RAB is Sirius's Brother Regulas. He was mentioned in Book 5 as well as quite a few times in book 6.  I believe that the necklace is already in the Black house and is the ornate lockate that nobody could open that was mentioned in book 5 when the Weasley's and Harry were cleaning out a cabinet.  I think that Kreatcher took the lockate out of the trash and hid it in his nest. I may be wrong, :-[ But that is what I think.  ;)

;) Hi again I just wanted to reply to rns91294, you said something about DD's arm and hand being burned.  If it (the arm) is in fact dead, then maybe the AC curse wouldn't work on it. maybe DD held his arm up to his chest and the curse rebounded off of it. it could have knocked DD out and knocked him off of the tower as well. Then Fawkes showed up and caught DD and lowered him to the ground.  Just a thought but can the AC curse kill something that is already dead?   :) I also want to believe that Snape is "good"   :o= I think that he was doing what DD asked him (or ordered) him to do. He DD made it clear to Harry that sometimes you have to follow orders that you don't want to. Because you simply have to. I am probably wrong but thats my thoughts. lol

Welcome to the Snape is innocent society Rosewhite.  The more the merrier  ;D

Good thought about the dead arm by the way.  I hadn't considered this, but JKR did make a big deal out of the dodgy arm  :)

Hello again,  I always have had a soft spot for Snape! :-* Don't know why though ??? My friends think I am crazy, (for being supportive of Snape) So heres to being crazy! ;D A few of them have a couple of good ideas also about the HBP. One of Dennis's ideas is this.... remember when Harry tried to curse Bellitrix?  She told him that it wouldn't work if he didn't mean it. So if you have to mean it for the curse to work, and Snape didn't mean it when he cursed D, then maybe the curse didn't work on D.  It is amazing that my friends don't have an oppinion until I give them one of mine!  Well it is nice to be able to tell someone my speculations, and I am proud to be in the Snape is innocent society. Thanks for responding rose

I was worried that it would mean Harry would have to die. But I think the horcruxs have to be sorted before LV can be killed. I hope she doesn't kill Harry. We should all sign a packed not to nag for more stories as long as Harry gets to live ;)

I believe that all of the horcruxes will indeed have to be destroyed. Then when LV is "killed" Harry's scar will be the last HC so somewone will have to destroy the "scar" not necessarily Harry.  I believe that it will have to be Neville who is destined to try to destroy the scar because neither Ron or Hermione will be able to.

I think that the Horcruxes are in the following places:

1. LV himself (of coursc)
2. Harry's Scar ( LV created this when his curse backfired, but he couldn't use harry when he was a baby, so he has had to wait until now)
3. I think that Nagini is at LV fathers house
4. I think the Locket is at the Noble House of Black (Grimald place)
5. I think that the Hufflepuff cup is probably at the orphanage somewhere, prob. in LV old room, although, LV hid the locket near the orphanage so this may not be the case
6. the diary was at Hogwarts
7. the ring was presumable at LV mothers.

again just a few wild guesses  ??? But I like to keep trying! ;D  please let me know what you think...all my friends think that I'm nuts!! so there is no place but up from there! lol

Some interesting speculation... note that when they talk about the cave where the horcrux (locket) was in, they say that 2 people are needed to breach the security and only one of them can be a wizard...definitely not true!!

Potter wizards on the hunt - 'Half-Blood Prince' cliff-hangers have fans re-reading the series, hoping for clues to book 7

September 8, 2005

Now what?

Almost two months after the unveiling of J.K. Rowling's sixth and penultimate chronicle of the wizarding world, diehard fans are coping with severe "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" hangovers.

Eager for some more hair of the three-headed dog that bit them, many wonder how to occupy themselves over the next couple of years before the arrival of still-unnamed book seven. The logical choice? Time to re-read the entire canon in a hunt for overlooked passages and illuminating clues.

To that end, here are some theories about the most vexing questions that remain, culled from message boards and fan sites. But be forewarned: Hagrid-sized spoilers follow.

How many horcruxes? One major revelation in "Half-Blood Prince" is that Lord Voldemort tried to ensure his immortality by splitting his soul, then embedding the pieces in objects or individuals called horcruxes. Tom Riddle's weird diary from "Chamber of Secrets" was one; a ring originally belonging to Salazar Slytherin and destroyed by Dumbledore in "Half-Blood Prince" was another.

Seven being a magic number, Dumbledore theorizes that Voldemort created six horcruxes, the seventh piece of his shattered soul still residing in You-Know-Who himself. In the final book, Harry will need to destroy the four remaining horcruxes before attempting a facedown.

Since a murder is required to make a horcrux, one speculation is that Harry was inadvertently made into a horcrux when Voldemort killed his parents, which explains why he has acquired some of Voldemort's powers. Another iteration has Harry's scar as the actual horcrux, leaving open the more pleasant possibility that only it, and not all of Harry, need be destroyed in order to off Voldy.

Other possible horcruxes, some more likely than others: Nagini the snake from "Chamber of Secrets," Hufflepuff's goblet, the Sorting Hat, the sword of Gryffindor (like the hat, located in Dumbledore's office), even Wormtail's magical silver hand.

Who is R.A.B.? In "Half-Blood Prince," Harry and Dumbledore travel to a mysterious cave in the hopes of finding a horcrux; instead, they recover a fake horcrux - an empty locket - and a note taunting Voldemort that is signed "R.A.B."

Do those initials belong to the now-dead Regulus Alphard Black, brother to Harry's godfather, the much-mourned Sirius? It's a conclusion Rowling herself has called "a fine guess." Since breaching the cave's magical spells requires two people, only one of which can be a wizard, many have speculated that the Black family house elf, Kreacher, helped Regulus retrieve the original horcrux-locket.

In "The Order of the Phoenix," a heavy locket that cannot be opened is found among the Black family possessions. Hmmm.

Will Dumbledore pull a Gandalf? The ultimate spoiler - don't blame me if you don't stop reading now - is that at the end of "Half-Blood Prince," ill-tempered professor Severus Snape murders beloved Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

Though a proper funeral was had and Dumbledore's snoozing image has appeared in a portrait on his office wall of departed headmasters, some fans advance the argument that, like the popular "Lord of the Rings" wizard, Dumbledore will reappear after his death, whether real or faked. For convincing arguments, visit the bereaved fans at www .dumbledoreisnotdead.com.

More likely to surface in book 7: Dumbledore's low-key brother, Aberforth, who had been prosecuted for practicing "inappropriate charms on a goat" (don't ask), and is the barkeep at the Hog's Head Inn.

Snape - good or evil? The answer to this hinges on whether you think Dumbledore's death was a pact between the two, a necessary sacrifice to ensure Voldemort does not suspect Snape's betrayal. Or whether you believe Snape was a double-double agent, convincing the wise but trusting Dumbeldore that he was defying Voldemort's orders to spy on Hogwarts, but in truth keeping his promise to the Dark Lord.

Then there is the "crush" theory. Rowling has hinted there was someone else at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents died. And it was out of character for cranky Voldemort to give Lily Potter so many chances to step aside before he attempted to kill her son.

Was Snape at Godric's Hollow, and was it at his request that Voldemort agreed to spare Lily? And is that why Snape resents Harry so deeply - because Harry, with his mother's green eyes, reminds Snape of the woman who died in order for Harry to live?

Will Harry survive book 7? Optimists look to a line in "Goblet of Fire" in which Harry sees a "gleam of triumph" in Dumbledore's eyes after the old wizard learns Voldemort used a drop of Harry's blood to regenerate himself. Dumbledore has told Harry that wizards saved by another of their kind have a "life debt." Perhaps now Voldemort has this magical IOU to Harry - with happy-ending-inducing results.

On the Web, just wild about Harry

There's no shortage of sites where you can find Potterheads prognosticating. Beware of wild theories - Neville's crazy mother is not sending him secret messages on those candy wrappers, and Snape is not a vampire - and maybe concoct a few of your own:

www.jkrowling.com - Herself's very own site. Lots of tidbits if you poke around, including why Harry's wand is made of holly (tradition is, it repels evil), while Voldemort's is yew (long lived, but its sap is poisonous).

www.mugglenet.com - Talk about juice: Emerson Spartz, the 19-year-old founder of this authoritative fan site, was one of only two people granted a private interview with Rowling when "Half-Blood Prince" debuted. The discussion forums can get as weighty as a grad class, from "Voldemort, the Ourobouros Worm, and the Legend of Kronos" to "Fudge & Machiavelli."

www.hp-lexicon.org - What Rowling herself has called "my natural home," and an indispensable destination if you need to brush up on characters and plot lines. Searchable by key word ("butterbeer," "Slughorn") or category ( "Wizards A to Z," "Magical and Mundane Plants"), it's positively encyclopedic.

http://scholastic.com/harrypotter/books/ pronunciation/play.htm - Who knew Voldemort has a silent "T"? Before you botch "boggart" and "animagus," too, consult this Scholastic guide.

www.quick-quote-quill.org - A compendium of interviews and quotes from the reclusive author, who often debunks theories on her own (including the two mentioned above).

Thanks for that FTY.  I hadn't given Kreacher a thought but that could be a good solution.

I am not convinced we are looking for as many Horcrux as we seem to think.  The known ones are definitely

1   The diary
2   The ring
3   The locket

Lord Voldemort makes 4, so it seems we are looking for another 3.  But when LV was hit by the reflected curse at Godrics Hollow wouldn't this have killed the bit of soul inside him then, hence his sorry state.  That would mean that when he was resurrected with Harrys blood in the graveyard one of the three missing horcrux would have to have been used to bring him back to life.  Assuming you can only spread a soul so far and LV can't make any more, I think we are only looking for 2.  I think they are the the Hufflepuff Goblet and either the Gryffindor Sword or Hogwarts itself (I still really don't want it to be Harry).

(little interesting fact - I have just spell checked this and the dictionary has Hogwarts in it  ;D )

Aaaahhh, what a great question!  Each of the books may hold the clue to a horcrux!  Diary for COS, Locket for OOP, ring for HBP, Scar for SS?, what for GOF?  Maybe that could be how JKR planned it.  ???

That could be true, but that would mean that Voldemort had enough soul to split at that point.  I was under the impression that he made all 6 horcruxes pretty close together.  I'll have to think about this a bit.  Maybe we could make a timeline of when we think each horcrux was made.  You may be right on that.  I just assumed that they were made one right after the other.  ???

: kbmum September 14, 2005, 05:39:32 PM
We don't know.  We do know what happens to a person whom Voldemort possesses, like Quirrell.  If Harry were a Horcrux, I think he would experience a lot of problems from having a piece of an evil soul hidden in his body, but that's just my opinion. :)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: allender September 14, 2005, 06:14:35 PM
It was Dumbledore who thought the snake was a prime candidate, on the theory that there wasn't anything better available when he murdered at the Riddle mansion, and how fond he is of Nagini. So from Dumbly's point of view, it was possible to use a living creature. Which means we can't rule it out for the snake (or others).

On that train of thought, thinking back on what might be a horcrux related to Book 3 ... how about the Whomping Willow? I can't think of a good "Gryffindor or Ravenclaw artifact" candidate from that book, but it sure would be a Hogwarts icon and something LV might have hoped to have access to when he returned to the school. Or maybe there was something that Scabbers visited that might have had the Gryffindor connection, butI don't remember any possible clues.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Sharon September 14, 2005, 11:06:08 PM
The Whomping Willow is a good idea but I don't think it was there when LV last went back to Hogwarts.  Wasn't the Willow planted specifically for Remus, to protect the entrance to the Shrieking Shack (as opposed to the Yak Shack  ;) )

Maybe it is just me but I assumed LV created all of the Horcrux when he first came to power, not after the backfiring curse.  I know he needed to have killed each time to create one, but judging by the body count JKR hinted at this doesn't seem to be such a big problem.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

I thought about the goblet, that would be interesting. I think most of the Hcs where made before the back fire I think IF Harry is one he is the last. This doesn't ruke out the willow thought as he could have used that before the back fire. I'm nit sure about it though I think its just like that by nature or maybe it is a bit of LV thats why it liked killing birds in the film  :-\

Hey all! I am recovering from a really bad tooth ache  :( and I am on tylenol 3's ;D so this may sound alittle weird... But here it goes any way!! I was thinking what if LV's wand is a horcruxe? I mean they do make a big deal about the wands being brothers, and having the same "Pheonix" feather inside them. Maybe the HC are 1) the diary for COS, 2) the ring for SS, 3) the "Lock"et for POA 4) the goblet for GOF 5) the wand for OOP 6) harry for HBP and 7)LV himself or Nagine for the 7th book?  I don't know.... it sounds good when you are on pain killers! ;D I thought I had it worked out last night!! ps Just wanted to let ya all know that I really enjoy chatting with you ;) I like all of your ideas also.. keep up the good work! rosewhite

Harry Potter and the glimmer of hope...

Much as I don't like to sit and think about poor Harry's fate. Last night a tought occured to me. If Harry is a Horcrux as I really believe he is. Then affectively he has two souls. Therefore could his salvation actually come in the form of a Dementor? They have always been drawn to him. Ok there would onlt be a 50/50 chance of them getting the right soul. But its a possibility :)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

This was started on another forum.

If Harry is a Horcrux then he must die to kill Voldemort because as Dumbledore said in HPB all of them must be destroyed to kill the point of origin (not exact words but I believe something close) But Dawn, you are correct. Harry does have two souls currently in his body if he is indeed a Horcrux. But think about this, what if Harry dies, maybe he would come back because he does have two souls and is able to kill Voldemort

This is just a thought after reading the new poll on the JKR site.

What if Harry now knows more than he is letting on?  One of the questions on the site is what happens to a secret when the secret keeper dies.  What if DD had some huge secret he could not tell Harry but that he wanted Harry to know.  What if when a secret keeper dies the secret goes whizzing through the air straight to the person it concerns.  Maybe the only way DD could tell Harry the secret was to die.  If this is the case whose secret was it?  Several possibilities

1. Lily and / or James.  Maybe something about their families
2. Tom Riddle.  DD was very close to him when he was a lad.  Maybe Tom told DD some terrible secret that could lead to his destruction
3. Sirius.  He told DD that he was going to fake his own death by pretending to jump through the curtain.  OK this one is only wishful thinking  ;)
4. The Centaurs.  Not sure why but this just sounds really interesting.

My personal favourite is that the secret Harry has found out is that something terrible is at Hogwarts (maybe a Horcrux) and that is why he has decided not to go back.

I like your idea, Sharon, that the person who it concerns know it but I don't think it shots out of the dead secret keeper and then zooms to the person I think when they die the person just knows after. Like I think thats why Harry wasn't really much upset after Dumbledore died because the knew it was for him and he had to die.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: emmafan January 01, 2006, 05:30:32 AM
Sharon, I love your idea...it seems like the kind of thing that J.K. Rowling would dream up.
However, I don't know if this would fit it-

My personal favourite is that the secret Harry has found out is that something terrible is at Hogwarts (maybe a Horcrux) and that is why he has decided not to go back.

Wouldn't you think that Harry would go right for that Horcrux if he knew one was at Hogwarts?
It seems to me that he has embarked on more of a personal quest to hunt down the remaining Horcrux.  Perhaps DD knew of several locations of other Horcrux (for example Godric's Hollow) and so Harry is setting out to those destinations.

But I believe you are definetly on the right track with your idea.  It must fit in somehow, if she thinks enough to make it a question.

Yep you are right about Harry heading straight for the Horcrux.  But my other favourite theory is that the whole of Hogwarts is one giant Horcrux and that the last book will end in a Die Hard meets Demolition Man style explosion where the castle gets blown to pieces  ;D

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: emmafan January 02, 2006, 03:28:29 AM
As much as I enjoy Die Hard-esque explosions, I don't believe it would be possible to make all of Hogwart's a Horcrux, much less blow the whole place up.  But it makes for an interesting and sad mental image.  I do believe that Voldemort did hex or place a spell on something in DD's office when he visited asking for a professorship.  But if Harry would have learned this information, (going under your secret keeper idea) I think he would have gone right for it.  I like to think that DD at least left him some sort of direction or way to find the next Horcrux (we can not so boldly assume that it is in Godric's Hollow).

Again, as soon as I finished HBP, I had a great thought for the next book.  As DD seemed to view his death as inevitable (or perhaps just in case), I do not think that he would have left Harry alone.  I'm sure that either someone will approach Harry as an associate of DD to help him, or Harry will find some sort of box that was left for him by DD.  Wouldn't you think a wizard as powerful as DD would have quite a few artifacts and such rare magical items?  I think it plausable that DD left behind instructions or a number of magical items to help Harry along the way.

Dumbledore isn't dead (http://dumbledoreisnotdead.com)

his connection to the Phoenix, and the fact that he has so many names, suggests to me, that he's died and been reborn before....no spell can bring back the dead, this is true, but we know that Avada Kedavra works differently on a Phoenix, while they technicall 'die' they are reborn nonetheless.......I think Dumbledore has a similar power...... :o=

Hello all! I hope the summer is going well for everyone! My Friends and I have been rereading ALL of the potter books from one to six looking for clues to Book 7! Dennis (I can't take credit for his idea) came up with a very interesting theory. What if Snape and Dumbledor were using PolyJuice potion?  :o In book 4 the Goblet of Fire...Right after VM comes back he says and I can't quote him because I don't have the book in front of me but it goes something like this "I see that 6 of my followers aren't present. 3 are dead. 1 is a coward and will be taken care of......Could this be Karkaroff? the second is my most devoted follower and has already joined me.......Crouch JR.? and one will never return....Snape? did Snape sacrafice himself so that DD would survive? is that why Snape/DD was so angry with harry? because it was DD and he had to sacrafice his good friend Snape and Stilll Harry didn't trust Snape? Like i said I can't quote exactly what VD said in GoF but the poly juice potion theory is pretty good! That could explain alot! because then DD really wouldn't have given Snape the Defence against the Dark Arts position he would have been teaching it himself! And DD wouldn't have died either! but everyone would have thought so. and that would give him more leverage! The only wizard that VD is afraid of is DD. Well any way this is just one more theory in what i am sure are going to be a bunch! but it made since to me...............()who knows maybe Dennis is on to something!  ::)

Yes but it would have had to be Snape in the cave. And Barty Jnr had his soul sucked out.

:o :o i like your theory rose!!! but theres too many questions surronding the funeral, even though we dont see dumbledores body, and out of complete excitment however!! ive been refering constantly to my books whilst reading this whole subject and in book six at the funeral, this is written

"Hagrid was walking slowly up the isle between the chairs. He was crying silently, his face gleaming with with tears, and in his arms, wrapped in a purple velvet spangled with golden stars, was what harry KNEW TO BE Dumbledore's body".

if it was dumbledores body why would she write what harry knew to be and not just Dumbledore's body?? i am desperately clinging to the fact hes alive  so be gentle  ;D

I cant find the interview :(

She was just in New York doing a promo book reading/Q&A for charity with Stephen King & John Irving - think it was called an evening with Harry, Carrie, and Garp.

And yes, she emphatically stated that Dumbledore is dead.  I've read bits & pieces from several news agencies this week...

Thanks for posting the link, I really wanted to read what happened  :).  I am disappointed about Dumbledore because I was convinced he would 'do a Gandalf' as JKR puts it.  I am totally intrigued by Aunt Petunia now though.  Any thoughts as to what it might be?  I seem to remember JKR writing somewhere that she definitely doesn't have any magical powers so I wonder what it is?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Bitsy August 12, 2006, 01:57:07 AM
I have been wondering about Aunt Petunia since she knew what Azkaban was.  Also, remember when she spoke up and said that they had to keep Harry until he was of age?  Do you think she knows Voldemort somehow?

I also have a feeling that Hagrid might be one of the two deaths in the 7th book.  I read a transcript of the NYC interviews. One of the questions was who she would invite to dinner if she had to choose.  She said Harry, Hermione, and Ron outright.  Then she said Hagrid, but before she committed to him, she said something like, "It's hard because I know the outcomes of these characters, I know who dies." Then she went ahead and said Hagrid, but not after some hesitation.  It seems to me that when she flew out with Harry, Ron and Hermione, it suggests that they may survive.  Her hesitation began with Hagrid.  Any thoughts?

Yep I agree, it did seem like Hagrid will soon be an ex-half giant.  Unless of course JKR knew we would think that if she hesitated and it was a red herring  ^-^

As for Petunia, I had forgotten about Azkaban.  OK totally wild theory time now .... maybe she did something when she was younger that meant she was due to be sent to Azkaban ie tried to assassinate a senior wizard or burn down Hogwarts.  OK these might be a bit extreme but it is feasible she tried to expose the wizarding community in order to destroy them.  She may have been sentenced to a term in Azkaban (we have never been told a Muggle can't be sent there) and Dumbledore was the one who came to her rescue thus owing him a debt of honour/gratitude.

Well this may seem completely crazy but could just be ...... ;)

Sharon, you may be on to something. Remember her reaction when she found out they were dementors who attacked Dudley?  She gasped and was terrified.  To go along with your theory, could it be that she was a Squib?  Remember how she said, "Our parents were so proud. 'We have a witch in the family. Isn't it wonderful?'" Maybe she did then do someting bad because she wanted the glory Lily had.  Then when Dumbledore saved her, she being in his debt, she worked feverishly to hide that part of her life, not only from Muggles, but also other wizards.  Isn't being a Squib something you wouldn't want other wizards to know?  I think JKR said Petunia was not a wizard...well, being a Squib is NOT a wizard?!  Possible?  :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*

I dunno, that's a good point. Hermione's parents are Muggles and she's a wizard.  :-\ But to be a Squib...oh, man, I am going to have to look some stuff up now.   ;) Err I don't really want to wait nearly a year to find out everything.   :P.  Well, it's less than a year now! I'm grasping for straws here.  ;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Nienna August 12, 2006, 05:27:47 AM
I thought squibs were only born to wizard parents?
I'm sure I've read somewhere that JKR stated that Petunia is not a squib either - Lily's family were ALL muggles and that includes her sister Petunia.
What's to say that Petunia and Lily are half-sisters?
Perhaps their mother re-married or had an affair and became pregnant - which could account for how very different the two sisters are from each other?
James Potter was from an all-wizard family and from what I recall, he wasn't related to Sirius Black either.
The reason I mention them was that much was made of who linked with who in OotP and I'm certain attention would have been drawn to the fact of Sirius and James being related no matter how distantly, wouldn't you agree?

I think it's quite likely that Lily's parent might have had a subscription to the Daily Prophet too (much like Hermione does in the books and because they were so proud of Lily and wanted to know about the magical world) and if that's true, then I'm sure Petunia would have sneaked a read of it when her parents weren't looking which would account for why she knew so much about dementors and Azkaban.

Just my ten penn'orth ..  ;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: kbmum August 12, 2006, 06:44:37 AM
James and Sirius might be related.  Here's a thread about the Black family tree.  There was a Dorea in the Black/Nigellus family who married Charlus Potter, and they had one son.  The son could be James.  JK said that James' parents were older when they had him, they died sometime before Harry was born, and James was an only child.

http://www.theyakshack.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4092.0

I think Petunia told Harry that she heard "that awful boy" (or something like that) telling Lilly about dementors and Azkaban.

Ok, I looked it up.  You are right.  A Squib is born to a wizarding family.  I guess I'm trying too hard to figure everything out! Ugh, this is vexing.   ::)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: allender August 12, 2006, 10:33:05 PM
My theories on Petunia are based on the passages where we heard about Lily visiting, and her reactions to (paraphrasing) "that horrid boy". Many folks assume this meant James, but Lily and Severus worked together a lot too, so the reference might well be to Snape ... and potentially Petunia and Snape had a "thing" going, or he left some item with her that will turn out to be important. Jo says that Petunia's not a squib, but hasn't (I don't think) completely ruled out that she might have latent magic -- there's supposed to be a character who discovers magic late in life, and I don't think that person has been identified definitively.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola August 13, 2006, 03:09:00 AM
NO I am pretty sure she said she wouldn't show any magic.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: allender August 13, 2006, 05:24:55 AM
Okay then, if the statement was dead clear. Then I still favor a Petunia-Snape connection from when he made a summer visit home with Lily.

Book 6 destroyed the idea that Snape may have been a long-lost sibling ... but Severus Snape is still an anagram for Perseus Evans. 8) (Likely Jo planted that tidbit early, with the possibility of doing something with it later, and then discarded the idea.)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Sharon August 13, 2006, 04:07:09 PM
I like the idea of Petunia not referring to James in 'that horrid boy' quote.  So if it isn't James and for a minute lets assume it isn't Severus, how about Sirius?  He was a bit of a hunk in his youth and Petunia could have fallen for him and been rejected - for some reason I think it far more likely that Petunia had met Sirius than Severus.

So if we are getting totally outrageous here why not assume she had met Peter?  Maybe she had something to do with him finding the Potters and therefore was connected, unintentionally, to their death.  Yes Peter was the secret keeper but who is to say that Lily hadn't also made Petunia privy to the secret as well?  She was her sister and although Petunia didn't like Lily we don't actually know that Lily didn't like Petunia.

Do we know who cast the spell to keep the Potters hidden?  Was it the Potters themselves or Dumbledore?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: kbmum August 13, 2006, 07:10:31 PM
We don't know who cast the Fidelius Charm.  It could have been Lilly, James, Sirius, or Peter.  It couldn't have been Dumbledore, because the person who cast it had to be the one to name Pettigrew as the secret-keeper.  Or, maybe someone else cast the spell. ;)  For a while, I thought it might be Hagrid, since he arrived at Godric's Hollow before Sirius, but then he would have known Peter was the secret-keeper.  That begs the question -- how did Hagrid know to go to Godric's Hollow the night the Potters died?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Nienna August 13, 2006, 10:55:05 PM
I think the Fidelius Charm is cast by those who wish to be hidden - Lily & James - and I also think that Peter would have had to have been there at the casting of it to be named secret keeper.

What's the betting Dumbledore sent Hagrid to Godric's Hollow?
Perhaps Lily & James were due to meet with someone from the Order and didn't show for their meeting. Or maybe Dumbledore had a tip-off that Voldie was preparing an attack and sent Hagrid round to warn them of it?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Sharon August 14, 2006, 01:34:23 AM
But even if Lily and James were AWOL and Dumbledore had sent Hagrid to look for them he wouldn't have known where the Potters were hiding - as Cindy says Dumbledore didn't know Peter was the secret keeper and since only Peter could have passed on the secret we must assume Albus didn't know where the Potters were.

This has bugged me since we found out exactly how the Fidelius Charm worked - how did Hagrid and Sirius find the Potters?  At first I thought maybe they had seen it on the Muggle news but they got there before the police so this can't be the case.  Then I thought maybe when the people concerned died the charm became null and void but JKR has said this isn't the case, a secret stays secret.  Ahhhh it hurts my head to think about it :o.  It is like time travel, cause and effect  :o

But this has given me lots more to think about and the more I consider things the more I am convinced Petunia took Harry in out of guilt and/or a debt to Dumbledore  ^-^

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola August 14, 2006, 01:54:07 AM
Not sure about Hargird but couldn't peter have told Sirius where they were as he couldn't pass it on.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Sharon August 14, 2006, 01:58:12 AM
Well he could have done - Sirius did know Peter was the secret keeper but for some unknown reason I don't think he did.  Why would Peter have told Sirius where the Potters were?  That would have defeated the object of the charm.  And he couldn't have done it after the deaths - Sirius didn't find Peter until sometime the next day.  Soooooo confusing  ???

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola August 14, 2006, 02:01:28 AM
How would i defeat the object of the charm Sirius couldn't pass it on, its impossible. Or did he say he didn't want to know at the time  :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Sharon August 14, 2006, 02:21:27 AM
Well I just figure if someone is going to cast one of the hardest and most complicated charms in existence they wouldn't then tell other people willy nilly where they were.  Maybe I am just making things up as I go along but the way I see it Peter was the only person who could have told anyone where the Potters were - even the Potters couldn't have done that (unless they asked Peter to do it).  As Peter wanted the Potters as helpless as possible he wouldn't want any magical folk to know their whereabouts.  Of course this blows my theory about Petunia knowing where they were  :-\

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: kbmum August 14, 2006, 04:46:12 AM
Peter had to have told Sirius the secret.  In the Shrieking Shack, Sirius told Harry that the night James and Lilly died, he went to check on Peter, who was preparing to go into hiding.  He arrived at Peter's home and knew something wasn't right, so he set off for the Potters' house.  Besides, telling Sirius the secret wouldn't matter, since he would not have been able to reveal the secret to anyone under any circumstances.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Morningangel-Iola August 14, 2006, 04:49:22 AM

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: kbmum August 14, 2006, 04:55:20 AM
That's the question.  Hagrid would have known that Peter was the secret-keeper if Peter had revealed the secret to him.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Trey August 14, 2006, 07:25:38 AM
Dumbledore im assuming as he brought harry back to Dumbledore in Privet Drive...

I always thought it was the dark mark that alerted them to lily and James' deaths and that Dumbly sent Hagrid to get Harry from the house  :-\  Dont know where I got that idea though but that is what has been in my head for the past few years!

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: kbmum August 14, 2006, 07:31:12 AM
How did Dumbledore know to send Hagrid to get Harry?  Peter was alive and the secret was intact.  What we don't know is what happens when the people being hidden by the Fidelius Charm die.  Maybe that destroys the secret.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoliers*
: Trey August 14, 2006, 07:46:27 AM
How did Dumbledore know to send Hagrid to get Harry?

If the dark mark was indeed cast like I think (or have created in my mind haha) then Dumbly would have found out quickly and then asked Hagrid to go and get Harry.

I dont know where im getting this dark mark stuff from..will have to investigate in my books/movies, im sure that I have seen it somewhere as this has been in my brain for ages and has been my belief all along....hmmm

Someone else would have had to make the dark mark maybe Peter but I'm not sure he would because it all went wrong remeber. I have an other theory, what if the secret was no longer secret as it was to keep their whereabouts secret, but didn't the house blow up. Therefor say numbe nine godricks hollow no longer existed. Does anyway understand what I am on about.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: kbmum August 15, 2006, 05:00:08 PM
Unless there's a loophole in the charm that we don't yet know, Lilly can't reveal the secret to anyone.  Only Peter can.  I think if there were any chance of saving the Potters, Dumbledore would have apparated to Godric's Hollow himself instead of sending Hagrid.  But there's another unanswered question -- where was Dumbledore after the attack?  Why didn't he retrieve Harry from the ruins of the house?  After all, he knew the details of the prophesy and how important Harry and Neville were.

Did anyone else see where Barnes & Noble has released some kind of an upcoming release sheet with the Next Harry Potter Book (no title listed)? It's pretty basic saying that there will be a 40% discount for those who pre-order in advance.  There was no date listed for a release, but it could be a sign that they have at least received some information from the publishers, maybe.  I'm reaching for clues, I know.   ::)

  I'm reaching for clues, I know.   ::)

Reach away  ;D  That is the most positive news we have had for ages  ;D.

I have started the books from the beginning so that I finish them all by the time the next one comes out (I am not the fastest reader  ;) ) and one thing has struck me about Dumbledore.  He doesn't seem surprised by anything.  It is as though everything that happens is already known to him, maybe through divination or through a Merlin type insight.  Now this could be due to his age and wisdom but I am not convinced at the moment.  It is almost as though Dumbledore is just acting as an observer to events he knows will happen but can't or won't interfere with.  Either that or I have just been watching too much Stargate at the moment (it you don't like SG1 this will mean nothing to you  ;) ).

I really want to think Snape is good.  I know how angry he got at Harry in the HBP when he called him a coward....well, he certainly wouldn't be a coward if he was really working with Dumbledore and playing Voldemort...and he wouldn't be a coward for killing Dumbledore at his request.  Remember when Dumbledore told Snape to do something and Snape didn't want to do it, but Dumbledore told him that he had to and made him promise?  Maybe that was about having to kill Dumbledore... ???

I'll remain optimistic too...until book 7 is released.  :o=

SNAPE IS INNOCENT!!!!!

Well that's what I reckon  ;).  This is another reason I think Dumbledore knows more than he is letting on.  I think he knew he would have to drink the liquid in the cave to get to the locket and that it would be poison.  I think he had told Snape in advance to kill him, in order to save not only Draco but Snape himself (re: unbreakable promise/oath) knowing he was doomed anyway.  The only time Dumbledore ever got rattled was when Harry got angry - maybe he couldn't predict a teenage boys emotions.

Sharon, do you think it is possible that Dumbledore has known all along how this whole thing would end? You are very right, though, he's never taken aback.

Pink, you remember how Dumbledore always believes in the good in people...I think he knew that Draco didn't have it in him to kill.  Harry is always bothered by how trusting Dumbledore is, but I think that goes to what Sharon is saying--that Dumbledore knows much, much more than anyone can imagine. Is it time for Book 7 yet????  :o=  ;)

Y'know, I've never seen anybody speculate whether the pensieve works in reverse. Or, as the greatest wizard ever, Dumbledore might have found a way to communicate with the "past" Albus when he's stirred up a memory ...

Sharon, do you think it is possible that Dumbledore has known all along how this whole thing would end? You are very right, though, he's never taken aback.

Yes I have this niggling feeling that instead of just being a participant in events Dumbledore is actually the instigator, sort of like a narrator guiding things along.  I hadn't thought of an 'anti-pensive' but that would be a brilliant idea.

I am still leaning towards a Merlin type character.  Merlin supposedly lived backwards - started off old and got younger.  That way he already knew everything that would happen.  Well that is one theory anyway.  That doesn't really fit Dumbledore but I do think he is guiding events along a pre-ordained path rather than trying to change them.  But now he is gone and Harry is in charge who knows ......

oooh bitsy i agree! Dumbledore wanted to see good in Tom Riddle and thats why he took it upon himself to get him into Hogwarts! and the Fact that he never calls him voldermort to his face always Tom, as if hes reaching out for the real person perhaps??
i wish the book could come forward a few months!! im dreading the Lost feeling though when its been read! i felt empty after HBP but this the THE END!!  :'( :'( :'( :'(

Yet another suspicious thing about Dumbledore.  I am halfway through COS and have just got to the bit where Harry is hearing the 'voices'.  Dumbledore asks Harry if there is anything he wants to tell him and Harry says no.  Now in this book Harry keeps saying that he thinks Dumbledore and Snape can see into his mind, which of course they can.

This was a life or death situation with students lives at risk so surely Dumbledore should have just said to Harry that he knew he was lying and to tell him the truth.  There is no way Harry could have resisted Dumbledore's mind probe, in fact I would suspect an untrained mind would practically throw out thoughts.  Why didn't Dumbledore investigate the voices  ^-^

Good point, Pink! Do you think there is anyone who could pull what little good might be in Voldemort out before it is too late?  I honestly don't know.  I'm inclined to think that he is purely evil now--that whatever little bit of good Dumbledore saw in him is now gone.  Dumbledore says that Voldemort has no friends, no feelings for anyone or anything...that he has never known what it is to love or be loved in return.  You do point out an important point--Dumbledore always seems to make a distinction between Voldemort and Tom Riddle, as though they are two different people.  I wonder if that will play a role in some way.

i think i'd like to dinf some good in voldermort, i want to see him slightly vulnerable, i dont like this big man attitude, there has to be a wekness that isnt love cos surely he could over power it if needs be

I'm still pondering Sharon's point...it could be a big mistake, although, I just can't imagine JKR making such an error, so it must be that it will unfold in book 7.

As for Voldemort having some kind of vulnerability...do you remember at the end of the GOF book where Harry reveals to Dumbledore that Voldemort used his blood to come back to power? Remember when Harry thinks he sees a glimmer of triumph on Dumbledore's face, but then quickly thinks he was just seeing something?  Well, that is a statement that simply would not be written if it did not have a place later on, which means that Dumbledore is actually pleased that Harry's blood is coursing through Voldemorts' veins.  Could it be a weakness for Voldemort? Or maybe an advantage to Harry? Maybe it has to do with this whole Horocrux plot...I just don't know, but I really have a feeling it is going to play a big role.   :-\  ???  :)

Well, I don't know.  I don't think so, but I guess it depends on how you interpret Dumbledore's facial expression.  I just think that JKR would not have made a point of putting that in the book unless she planned on using it somehow later on.   ???  :-\

The reason I was asking is that they said when making the films they make sure to keep the really important stuff in. So if there was no look of triumph we might be barking up the wrong tree  :-\

From my perspective, I think that Dumbledore knew full well that Harry was withholding something, but trusted his character (and possibly his interpretation of the prophesy) enough to let Harry have things play out in their own way. Albus may not have known exactly what would happen, but he had faith that it would work out for the best, and that Harry wouldn't rise to future challenges if he wasn't allowed to make his own choices.

I completely agree.  Dumbledore only asked Harry if there was something he wanted to tell him because he already knew. But, he also wanted Harry to be able to tell him when he was ready. H ewanted Harry to be able to trust him as well.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*

Well if Dumbledore was just giving Harry a chance to prove himself this makes me think that old Albus wasn't the goody people think he was.  He knew the situation was lethal - he had been there when Myrtle died - and yet he was willing to risk every muggle born in the school to prepare Harry for the future.  This either means he knew the outcome ie no one would die and Harry would prevail.  Or he is a rather ruthless wizard who is willing to do anything to ensure his side prevails.  Ooooo I can't wait to find out which  ;D

You are right.  I know, though, that there was a scene they filmed with Dumbledore and Harry talking outside about what happened and the brother wand incident (priori Incatartem--not sure if that's right  ::)).  I really wish we could've seen that, at least on the deleted scene section. It wouldn't surprise me if they held some shots back because they want to keep the viewers guessing, at least those who have not read the books.   :-\

Sharon, you know what I was thinking...remember at the end of Book 6 when Harry went into Dumbledore's office after he died? He saw Dumbledore sleeping in a painting right over his desk--could it be that he will communicate to Harry that way? The paintings do talk and seem to be pretty aware of what's going on...maybe Dumbledore is not of this earth, but it might not mean that his strength and knowledge are gone...I'm stretching again, I know.  ::)

eeek sharon! i like your theory. theres way too much to dumbledore and im not sure if we're gonna find everything out and be 100% satisfied with what info she gives us in book 7.

Pink, oh don't say that!  :'( I want EVERY LITTLE DETAIL wrapped up in Book 7! The thought that there might be things left unanswered is, well, devastating to think about! What do you think about Dumbledore and the painting idea? Do you think he can still be a threat to Voldemort that way?

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*

Threat to Voldemort I wouldn't think so, although the portrait might be of some help to Harry.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Sharon November 30, 2006, 02:00:58 AM
Yes I am sure the portrait will be of some help but I think it will be in a morale boosting sort of way rather than practical help.  Plus it may not be the portrait in Hogwarts that Harry speaks to.  I doubt very much that someone like Dumbledore had only ever had one portrait painted.  In which case he will be able to travel between all of his pictures.

Oooo wouldn't it be good if Harry goes to Godricks Hollow and finds a portrait of Albus in the ruins of the house. Although knowing this is set in Briton they would have built a block of flats on the site by now

I agree.  We all knew that Harry would have to meet Voldemort in the end--the prophecy said as much.  I still think Dumbledore will have some role in the 7th book. Sharon, I'll bet you are right, Dumbledore will be able to travel between paintings...who knows where he will pop up!  Pink, your idea about the Pensieve is really interesting...hadn't thought about it, but he and Dumbledore did spend a great deal of time in HBP with it...much to think about on that one.

Still, we don't know Snape's story yet (at least I hope we don't) and there is Wormtail, who is in Harry's debt after Harry saved his life in POA--that has got to come into play regarding the final battle.  Then there is the Veil--what is that about?  It's puzzling me to no end.   :-\

I think there is another thread we discussed this on ages ago.  A horcrux can be anything - animal, vegetable or mineral .  We came up with quite a few possibilities from the Sorting Hat all the way to Harry himself.  I think one of the possibilities was something young Tom took from the orphanage with him but I can't quite remember  :-\

Hello again! I believe that we have all discussed the horcruxes before.  ::) but I have a theory that may or may not make sense.. so here goes.... what if we can't see the forest for the trees?  Meaning that maybe the last horcruxe is or was the Riddle Tombstone. wouldn't VM have to have a horcruxe to be brought back to life this time as well?  We know that he used Harry's blood but he didn't have to.. he wanted to. but he had the ceremony at the grave yard. Just a thought.  I can't wait until book seven comes out.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Bitsy March 23, 2007, 12:02:00 PM
That's an interesting theory.  I hadn't thought of the Riddle Tombstone.  I do think it is significant that Voldemort has Harry's blood running through his veins.  I can't get over the sentence in GOF that said something like: upon learning that Voldemort took some of Harry's blood, Dumbledore had what appeared to Harry as a look of triumph.

I was also thinking about that part in SS where Harry learns that drinking a Unicorns' blood curses the drinker...giving them a half-life, a cursed life.  If that is so, wouldn't Voldemort (if Harry succeeds in destroying every horcrux and forces him to be mortal once again) have a half-life anyway because he drank the unicorn blood? And since he has been living by virtue of every horcrux, wouldn't he just, you know, drop dead because he's kind of used up his "half-life?" Does that make sense--it probably doesn't...I'm trying to find any way I can to have Harry survive.  :P

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Sharon March 25, 2007, 02:54:47 AM
I think the tombstone is a great idea but if it is a horcrux I am not sure it has been used yet.  Once we found out about Voldemort and the horcruxes I sort of assumed the one to resurrect him in the graveyard was Pettigrew's hand  :-\.  Also for no good reason I assumed the item would be destroyed in the process.  But I think you are right in thinking they will go back to the graveyard, I seem to remember here being some discussion about this in the extras on one of the films.

Guess what? I wasn't off my rocker after all! J.K. Rowling said that the "gleam of triumph" on Dumbledore's face at the end of GOF when he realizes that Voldemort used Harry's blood is "still enormously significant."

Now, any guesses how this is going to play out?

i think it all has something to  do with the protection that is in harry ( his mother dying to protect him )  i think in some way this will make voldermort weaker because it is not something he could understand  and harry know and understands that kind of love

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Bitsy March 28, 2007, 07:07:10 AM
I'm hoping that it will in some way keep Harry alive.  And I agree completely that it will tie in with the protection his mother gave him...something having to do with the one thing Voldemort has never and will never comprehend: love.

I've heard some theories that Harry himself may be a Horocrux.  I kind of don't think he is...but, if he is, maybe he will have to "die" to kill Voldemort, then once Voldemort is dead, Harry will be revived somehow because of the blood factor. I don't really know, I'm just desperate to find a way to keep Harry breathing!  ::)

I have a strong feeling Harry is a horcrux because he has a connection with Voldemort, I think it happened by accident. Anyway thats what worries me about Harrys fate that he may need to die.

What's confusing to me is the prophecy and the explanation Dumbledore gives Harry in HBP.  I thought that Harry had to destroy all the Horcruxs in order to make Voldemort mortal...then Harry would have a chance to kill him, but couldn't do that until he was on an even playing field.  I thought the prophecy meant that one could not live while the other is living, so if Harry is a Horocrux and died before Voldemort becomes mortal, who would then fight him? Ron or Hermione, maybe?

I'm probably reading too much into this...I am so wanting to convince myself that Harry will survive.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*

It said one cannot live while the other survives, if memory serves me right. Well Voldy isn't really living so I would say that would put him in the surving catorgory. So can Harry only properly live when Voldy is dead? I hope so, Harry living is definately good.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Sharon March 30, 2007, 06:44:47 PM
I am trying to get through all the books again before July and am currently in the middle of POA.  I have noticed something that is bugging me, see what you think -

When Harry is near a Dementor he hears his mum pleading with Voldy for Harry's life.  He says something like get out of my way you silly girl and Lilly comes back with no, not Harry.  Now why was the most evil and powerful wizard of all time negotiating with Lilly Potter  :-\.  I always had the impression that one wave of Voldemort's wand and you were dead (maybe with a little duelling in between).  Presumably Voldemort had just killed James and headed up to the nursery to finish off Harry.  Why didn't he just zap Lilly?  Why did she beg for Harry's life instead of either fighting Voldemort to buy them some time or apparate out of there?  We now know that you can apparate with someone so Lilly could have done that.  If Lilly had stepped aside and allowed Voldy to kill Harry would he have let her live?

I know I am reading too much into this but I am now getting the distinct impression that Lilly knew Voldemort, and not just his reputation.  Either that or the memory Harry has isn't of Lilly pleading with Voldemort but with someone else in the room.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*

or  she was doing the spell to protect harry and was buying some time to get it finished   also she would have know  about voldermort and  knew that in the end it would be usless to hide  so  in dying to save her son she was giving the  strongest  protection she knew and  if  you read on about how harry  had to  go to the dursleys every year  and the fact that dumbledore knew this i would say that  the spell was the backup play that they had made before the potters went into hiding . but  then i am only guessing  but let me know what you think

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: kbmum March 30, 2007, 07:28:33 PM
Ever since we found out about side-along apparition, it's bugged me that Lily didn't do that with Harry.  The only theory I could come up with was that like Hogwarts, the house was protected with spells so that no one could apparate in or out.  Fred and George apparated inside Grimmauld Place, yet when James saw Voldemort and told Lily to get Harry and go, she ran up the stairs instead of apparated to Harry's room.  And yes, Voldemort has no problem killing anyone who steps in his way, so there was no need for him to negotiate with Lily.  Perhaps the scene just shows off JK's theatrical flair! ;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Bitsy March 31, 2007, 01:47:49 AM
Sharon, I am so glad you brought this up! I have been bothered for so long that Voldemort told Lily to get out of the way--would he truly have let Lily live? And if so, why? I think there is much, much more to Lily than meets the eye...and possibly Voldemort. I mean, he's the type of character that wouldn't waste his breath or time asking Lily to move out of the way...he'd just kill her.

It does make sense that Lily would negotiate with Voldemort to buy time, but it's still very odd that he seemed willing to let her live. I mean, he killed James with no problem.

Yeah, I think it is likely that since the house was under magical protection, no one could apparate in or out. BUT, like Cindy said, why wouldn't she apparate WITHIN the house? Wouldn't she have been able to get to Harry quicker? And even if the house was under said protection, could it not have been broken by the house owners in the case of an emergency? You would think they would have that kind of loophole so they could escape if need be.

JK Rowling is a brilliant writer...no doubt about it!  ;)

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*

Well Voldy didn't apparate in, he walked so there probably was protection with that in mind.

or  she was doing the spell to protect harry and was buying some time to get it finished

Now that is something I hadn't considered Marcia - that the protection around Harry was an actual spell.  I had always assumed it was just the act of Lilly dying that had saved Harry but if it was a conscious spell Lilly cast that does change things quite a bit.

You are right.  Clearly there was some fear that something could go wrong. I always thought that it was the act of Lily sacrificing her life for Harry that created the protection, but perhaps it is an actual spell.

I was also thinking, during one of my attempts at figuring out a way to save Harry, didn't JK once say that Harry is like a son to her? Well, would she really want to see a character she views like a son die? So, maybe Harry lives! Hurray! (I'll find any way for him to survive and live a nice life playing professional Quidditch or something).

I'd always assumed he was, in Philosopher's Stone, when Hagrid tells Harry about them in the shack, he said that Voldemort thought James and Lily were too close to Dumbledore to be turned to the dark side, and also that Voldemort would never have tried to take over Hogwarts at that time because he feared Dumbledore. In my opinion, this suggests that Dumbledore was Headmaster.

The Harry Potter Lexicon lists Riddle's birth year as circa 1926, while James and Lily are circa 1958 or 1959 (but could be as early as 1957).

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*

I don't think the invisibility cloak would have been much help in the event of a major attack.  Whilst Voldemort wouldn't have been able to see them he still would have been able to destroy the house and the Potters along with it.  In fact that would have been a far better plan in hindsight for Voldemort.

But that does raise another question similar to the vault key - why did James leave the cloak with Dumbledore.  It also brings me full circle to my suspicions that DD isn't quite as nice as we thought he was.  What if he suggested that certain items were left with him as he 'knew' the Potters would die.  It has been suggested that DD did have an uncanny knowledge of future events.  Well what if one of them was the death of Lilly and James.  If he had foreseen that, he may have known that Harry would be the downfall of Voldemort and so wouldn't have wanted to stop it.

The cloak might have hidden them but remember Voldy is very good with the mind thingy so probably should have picked them up.

I think the Potters were still young when they had Harry.

Apart from the Lexicon DOB details, in CoS, the Riddle Diary is backdated to 50 years prior, so Tom would have been 14-15, making the Potters at least 65 if that were true, which is impossible. Also, according to Hagrid in PS, Voldemort killed Lily and James at the height of his power, which (from the top of my head as I don't have a copy of the book on hand) was several years after he left school.

Wouldn't Lily and James have met Hagrid at school?  When Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts in the mid-1940s, Dumbledore gave him a groundskeeper job.

I thought it had taken Voldemort around 40 years to get to the height of his power but it could have been that he had been terrorising the wizarding world for decades.  In HBP didn't DD say Voldemort had disappeared for quite a few years after leaving school?

that is true and of course  he would have started out small and then gotten bigger and   then you have to have time for people to realise what is happening and  dumbledore said that when they  first formed the order of the phoenix they where heavily out number by voldermort supporters.  so it could easily take that long for all we know it could have taken him 20 years to split his sole and of course learn the skill to do so

The HP Lexicon has a detailed timeline that might help here. :)

Riddle certainly terrorized people long before he came Voldemort.  He opened the Chamber of Secrets in his fifth year and killed his father and grandparents a few months later during the summer.

have a couple of questions for you all  do you think that lily potter's sister ( harry's aunt ) Petunia  was and is a witch  but has refused to acknowledge it  or to  go to hogwarts ????????

also  do you think that the order of the phoenix will still continue ????

and does anyone else get the feeling that  godric hollows is going to be the place for the  final battle

do  you realise that now harry has his own home  and  he also is  finacially  okay   but i was thinking that there might be something in dumbledore will that will help harry  what do you all think ???

will reading through this section i remembered that we saw dumbledore in the portrait  so  an idea came to me as dumbledore was a very famous and well liked wizard his portrait is going to be in alot of places and i think that is going to be how he will still help the order of the pheonix  depending on how long  he sleeps  for in the portrait

I always thought Petunia could be a bitter witch but I am sure I read somewhere that JKR has said she is definitely a muggle.  Due to the amount of knowledge she has about the wizarding world (which is quite a lot) I have wondered if, when she was younger, she was actually friends with Lilly's crowd.  Maybe she did hang around with James and Sirius but one of them did something nasty to her - they were known for their practical jokes.  Or perhaps as they all got older she was just 'side lined'.

Lets face it, whilst some wizards do interact with muggles it would appear that the purer the blood line the less contact they have.  The Weasleys had a very poor understanding of muggles before Hermione and Harry came along.  Both Sirius and James were from pure blood families and from the little we know about them they seemed to stick to the wizarding world.  I think Petunia was bitter about being shut out of this world and that is why she hated Lilly so much.  But I am probably completely wrong  ;D

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*

My bet is that Petunia had an unrequited crush on "that horrid boy" that Lily brought around. Most people assume that JKR was referring to James, but I bet it was Lily's early studying companion who came to visit: Severus.

Jo said that there would be somebody who starts using magic late in life, but I think she pretty clearly said it wasn't Petunia.

what has got me is that petunia is afraid of what dumbledore had put in that letter so it means that petunia has alot of info about the magical world and that  maybe like hermione and her parents when lily needed to go to diagon alley petunia went along and maybe she found her way to knockturn alley lol

IMHO, I don't think Lily would invite Severus over for a visit, especially after he called her a mudblood and she took offense.  I really like Sharon's idea that Petunia had a crush on Sirius, or Peter or Remus, for that matter.  :)

Yes and that would give her another reason for hating Harry so much.  Every time she looked at him she thought of James.  I would love to know what Dumbledore threatened her with though in those letters.  I wonder if the deal was that the Dursleys would be protected if they took care of Harry.  After all I expect there were a lot of angry Deatheaters out there who would have wanted to wipe James and Lilly's bloodlines from the face of the earth.  Actually I wonder if that is what happened to all of James' family  ^-^

Not after, before.  ;)  Until Lily started leaning toward James, she was a frequent companion (I wouldn't say it was established that they were "friends") of Snape. By studying together they became two of the most talented Potions practitioners ever to graduate from Hogwarts. Because Book 6 had Lily and Severus together a lot, I speculated that it was an earlier visit to the Evans family by her studying partner, not a later visit from her to-be fiance and husband.

Even if it's not true, it's the sort of thing that Jo does. She gives us just enough information to support several possibilities. Either way, I think we'll find out that there was something significant about the visit from "that horrid boy" and we'll find out in Book 7. Or, it was a little plot "hook" that Jo left dangling in an earlier book in case she decided to use it for something later. By August, we're going to start asking about the other loose ends that weren't critical to the plot of Book 7, like "what ever happened to Madame Rosmerta and Stan Shunpike?" If JKR gets bored with her next projects, she could start working on the appendices. I'm sure there's already a ten-page discussion topic about Stan over on Mugglenet. So even after the final book, I expect we will see opportunities for fan fiction. 8)

Ok, so I've been reading the 6th book in preparation of Deathly Hallows. A few things caught my eye:

1. Ok, so we know the fact that Lily was brilliant at Potions is important.

2.  In the same chapter, Slughorn talks about the love potion, saying that is the most dangerous potion in the room.  In response to some "whatever" looks from Draco and crowd, Slughorn then says that in his many years, he has found that the most dangerous thing is "obsessive love."

NOTE: Now, reading on, we learn that Voldemort's mother, Merope, was obsessively in love with Tom Riddle and used a Love Potion to secure his love.  In the end, it was her love for him, and his lack of love for her, that destroyed her.  Again, this plays into the fact that Voldemort has never known (nor does he understand) what it is to love, and perhaps his disdain for it.

3.  We know Snape was also brilliant at Potions i.e. Half-Blood Prince.  Perhaps he and Lily were in the same Potions class.  I know we've all thought, maybe, that Snape secretly loved Lily.

NOTE: I was thinking, if Snape did love Lily, maybe it will be his love for her that will prove to be his undoing...he hates Harry, no doubt about it.  I think he hates him because he reminds Snape of James. BUT, as has been said so many times, Harry has his Mother's eyes.  Maybe another reason looking at Harry bothers him is that when he looks at him, he is reminded of Lily.

Just some random thoughts... :-\  I'm trying to piece the puzzle together...if it's even possible!  ;)

Or maybe Harry has Lily's eyes and Snape's ears, and it's not James he's reminded of? :P  (I couldn't resist! Yeah, Harry looks like James in every feature except the eyes.)

I'm timing my re-reading to reach a crescendo in July, and am doing Book 2 carefully because of what it foretold for Book 6. I think was established that either Lily and Severus studied potions together outside of class, or maybe they were just connected through Slughorn's club. Or maybe I'm just remembrall-ing somebody else's speculation. After all, I was convinced that there was deep meaning in the fact that "Severus Snape" is an anagram for "Perseus Evans"!

Ok, been doing some more reading and discovered something:

When reading the chapter where Dumbledore takes Harry to see his memory of first meeting Tom Riddle (young Voldemort), I noticed that Tom regarded Dumbledore much the way Harry regards Snape. Tom did not want to refer to Dumbledore as "Professor" or "Sir," but did so bitterly. Tom clearly did not trust Dumbledore, perhaps felt intimidated by him, and we know that later in life he feared and hated him. Of course, Dumbledore is good.

Harry loathes calling Snape "Sir" or "Professor;" he hates Snape; he distrusts him. Perhaps Harry will find that he could have trusted him all along.

I am also wading my way through the books again (not sure if I will manage all of them by July though) and I have just reached GOF.  I had forgotten how much Vernon and Petunia hate magic.  Yes I know they didn't like anything out of the ordinary but this goes way beyond that.

Now this is nothing new I know but it has got me thinking.  I am now wondering if both Petunia and Vernon have had contact with wizards in the past.  I know Vernon knows nothing of the magical world but I have a feeling that maybe he has been on the receiving end of some not so nice spells, maybe when he and Petunia were courting.  There is no reason to believe the two sisters husbands never met, possibly even more of the Marauders at the Evans house.  I am not sure what this all means it just came to me when I was reading yesterday  ;D

Well Marcia you and I are on the same wave length  ;D.  I had forgotten it was Vernon who first made the connection in book one but from re-reading the other books I am sure that the young sisters and their partners would have come into contact.  I know we don't know how old Lilly was when her parents died but I sort of assumed she was not very, very young ie early teens.  If the Evans had died when Lilly was very young I think there would have been a mention made about Petunia raising her.

So, for no good reason, I reckon the Evans died just before Lilly and James married (they are not mentioned in the wedding photo).  In my mind this means that the two couples would have come into contact and I think it was that contact that made the Dursleys hate magic so much.  I assumed it was because of some magical incident but it could have been something as petty as being jealous of James' wealth.

Initially, I thought that Deathly Hallows meant that it will be the honored area where Harry sacrifices himself  :'( for the sake of the wizarding world and finishes Voldemort for good.

Now, I have a little more hope that Harry might live.  These titles seems to suggest that there is some kind of death treasure...I wonder if it the last Horcrux that will finish Voldemort...although I think it will be much deeper than that...Oh, I'm going to be thinking on this for a while.  ???

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: allender June 30, 2007, 06:21:43 PM
TV commentator Keith Olbermann recently posted a blog where he made predictions for Book 7, and one of his biggest speculations was that Harry's scar was a horcrux, and that (in the end) Snape will show Harry how to eliminate the horcrux without killing himself, but at the cost that he would lose magical capabilities forever.

I don't agree with this conclusion but it does come close to another theory I have. I can't see the scar being a true horcrux because Voldemort didn't do any preparation in Godric's Hollow. One could have been placed when he touched the scar in the Riddle Graveyard, but then why would Voldy be trying so hard to kill Harry right after? So, well maybe there's a way to impose an unintentional horcrux where a piece of his soul entered Harry; this would fit with other plot threads. But definitely Lord V isn't aware of the fact he was trying to destroy one of his own horcruxes. And Dumbledore seemed to be pleased to find out that the parts of LV's power that were transferred to Harry were going to turn out to be helpful. Maybe the scar is one of the six pieces of Voldemort's soul, since it had a huge effect on LV when he created the scar, but it will act very differently than the regular horcruxes.

It does tie into my theory on another horcrux. I think the piece of Voldemort's soul that was contained in the Ring from the Riddle House was removed from the ring by Dumbledore, but Albus was not completely successful and the piece of soul migrated to him. It resided in his withered hand. He knew that could not be removed and that eventually it would overcome him. Snape was assisting in holding the transferred horcrux at bay, which is why Albus needed to see him first after they returned from the cave. Dumbledore knew that his time was limited and had arranged with Snape to kill him to destroy the horcrux when he reached the point where he was too weak to fight it any more. Dumbledore had to survive long enough to be sure that Harry was up to the task of carrying on after he was gone.

Here might be a rundown on the missing pieces of Voldemort's soul

1. Tom Riddle diary: horcrux, destroyed
2. Ring/Dumbledore's hand: horcrux, destroyed
3. Slytherin locket: horcrux, Harry will wear in Book 7, currently with Kreacher or Mundungus
4. Nagini: horcrux applied at death of caretaker?
5. Hufflepuff cup: horcrux, hidden in Room of Requirement?
6. Scar: unintentional horcrux or something different?

Not horcruxes: Gryffindor sword, Ravenclaw item. I can't think of any other item that has received any significant setup in the earlier books. The closest other candidate that follows a known Voldemort killing was Wormtail's hand.

It was a nice theory that Jo had set it up so that 4 of the horcruxes would be associated with each of the Hogwarts houses. Harry might qualify for the Gryffindor connection (as the "true" wielder of the sword in COS and having received the scar in Godric's Hollow). Maybe Nagini isn't one or has some sort of undocumented Ravenclaw connection. Maybe Malfoy's light-for-the-wielder hand was owned by Ravenclaw; we seem to have a nice undercurrent of hands now!

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: Morningangel-Iola July 02, 2007, 03:14:25 AM
My theory is that Harry/the scar is a horcrux, I think the Voldy was going to do one while killing him, but when that backfired so did the horcrux and it ended up in Harry, hence him seeing into Voldys mind.

: Re: BOOK 7 - Let the Speculation Begin *Spoilers*
: allender July 02, 2007, 05:04:06 AM
I thought so too, until I started thinking that if that's the case, Voldy is awfully stupid in not figuring out that the piece of him in Harry might be worth keeping around, instead of trying to kill the container. Okay, I guess we never did learn how somebody could retrieve one of his parts from a horcrux.

But when Harry was a baby, the idea seems definitely to kill him immediately. Is there a good chance that your horcrux will be safe in a corpse? Then I thought it could have been imposed in the Riddle Graveyard, but then killing seemed to be the plan there too. So maybe the scar is a horcrux, but it might react differently from other horcruxes. And may that be how Snape helps Harry remove the piece of Voldemort's soul and still survive?

One other thing I noted, that R.A.B. is also related to the three stages of alchemy in reverse order - Rubeus, Albus, Black. I think it's a coincidence.

I was wondering, was Moaning Myrtle the first person killed by Voldemort? and what house was she in? I don't remember. could Voldemort have used her death to create a Horcrux before he left? I wish we knew what "steps" so to speak were used to make one, i mean could he do a ritual in private then just touch something that he wanted to curse? or would he actually have to have possession of the object in order to put the HC into it? any way if he only had to touch the designated object after doing a private ritual, then it could be almost anything.... alot of help that was....

::) After I posted that I remembered that Myrtle was killed by the basilisk.  not by Tom. she  heard him opening the chamber but he wasn't the one to kill her. Sorry
But but ... It appears that you might get "credit" for killing somebody if it's done by your agent. It's not clear, but I think we're meant to think that Myrtle's killing enabled Tom to make the diary into his first horcrux. And Frank Bryce was killed by Nagini, and Dumbledore was sure that Nagini is a horcrux. Would Jo have kept associating significant deaths with horcruxes, and then beg off by saying it was a different killing that was responsible? Some poor unrecorded soul died for the diary, and another unrecorded soul for the snake? That just doesn't seem very neat to me.

Lily and James are the only ones we know were killed directly by Voldemort. We only have his word for it that he killed Tom Riddle Sr and his grandparents up close and personal. That's why I tend to believe it's killings we know about that are the important ones, even if the act is only performed on Lord V's orders.

Of course I'm almost certainly wrong, again!

I don't know if this has been discussed yet, but something in OOTP kind of hit me last night.  When the kids went to the Ministry to save Sirius, shouldn't they have run into the Order member who was guarding the prophesy that night?  I've always thought that the Order had a spy, and maybe this person is the one.

after watching the ootp film last night, i was amazed at the omissions, more that the obvious changes from the book to movie. i noticed omissions in plots that have been discussed on this forum before, that many thought was important to predicting the outcome of the last book. There was no letter delivered to aunt petunia from a mystery person, no Mundungus, no mention of Regulius Black, when they were in the family tree room. does this mean that conjectures made concerning the importance of the letter to petunia, Mundungus perhaps stealing a horcux and RAB meaning Regulius Black have no meaning in the whole context of things? I'm sure JK previewed and approved the omissions and changes from book to movie prior to the movie being released. perhaps we should look at the omission in the various movies when speculating about the final book. it would be hard to transfer a plotline that was omitted from one movie into the next, if it wasn't address in that previous movie. perhaps the devil is in the details. just a thought. ???

Well, sometimes they find ways in the movies to collapse and combine several plot threads.

***MILD SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVEN"T SEEN THE MOVIE***

R.A.B. doesn't really come into play until Book 6, so I don't think it has to be a significant omission. But maybe the moviemakers will use a character we've already been introduced to as a stand-in for Regulus. Somebody had to go to the cave (with Kreacher) to pick up the Slytherin locket, or it wouldn't be around Harry's neck in the book covers! I thought "how it got there" probably had to do with Mundungus, but possibly they will collapse the whole thing and have the real locket show up in the pool at the cave. Or maybe Mundungus will be combined into a Hogsmeade thread, because I'd like to see Julie Christie again. (There's lots of plot to delete, after all. It's funny how Neville seems to be doing lots of Dobby's work.)

After OOTP I think we can conclude that the mirror Sirius gave to Harry, and the Time Turners at the Ministry, will not play a big role in Book 7. And we've probably seen the last of Lockhart. Don't expect much in the plot line of Firenze and Trelawney.

I think they're going to expand Luna's role, and maybe she or one of the other Gryffindor students will fill in the gaps that would allow them to avoid introducing new characters. But really, trying to imply there's some shipping going on between Harry and Luna ... I think they were too nasty to poor Cho.

I thought the semi-possession of Harry in front of Dumbledore and the "everybody has good and evil in them" was a bit heavier set of hints, versus the books. And the Dumbledore escape scene implies a bit more was going on than a phoenix' ability to carry heavy loads.

Really, did they have to issue an autograph card of Jim McManus as "Aberforth Dumbledore"? You knew it and I knew it, but the movie credit was just for the "Barman."

Yes I think the movie gave us more hints about book 7 than anything so far.  The mirror does seem to be a dead duck but I think the centaurs and giants will play a major part - the centaur scene was completely unnecessary and I felt was only stuck in the same way Kreacher was shoehorned in.  They could have easily got rid of Umbridge a different way.

I have a feeling Percy will play a big part in DH, something I hadn't considered before.  Whilst he wasn't named he was clearly following Fudge around.  The prophecy seems to not be that important after all, it was such a throw away bit.  And, as already mentioned, what about the letter to Petunia!!!!  I still think this will be a huge revelation in DH and maybe JKR asked for it to be left out so that people like us wouldn't guess too much in advance  ;)
