Why did Frodo have to go to 'the West' in the end of ROTK?

Call me stupid, but it still bugs me. He got rid of the ring, everyone was happy, so what was the real explanation of why he had to leave with Gandalf & co?

This is where the film was poor! As far as the film is concerned  Frodo went into the west because he had a niggling pain in his shoulder ...

The books give a much stronger case and tell a much sadder story... should I say or would you prefer to read them?

Please reveal all! Sadly, I've not read the books - so really want to know! Yes, the movies were poor at explaining the truth. Maybe RoTK EE wil be clearer!

Pax - you really should read the books  

There isn't a short, or straightforward answer. It's even worse if you've only seen the films. The only part of your question ROTKEE will answer  is what happened to Saruman and Worm. As it happens, that's part of the Frodo going West theme in the book, but NOT the movie.

Please read the books. Despite a magnificent effort, PJ completely lost the thread for everything that happened after the coronation (and some things before). For me (and a lot of others), the whole point of the story is the final two chapters.

I'm not going to spoil things, but if you want to really understand what LOTR is all about Read the books

Totally agree - while the movies are magnificent, you really must read the books to fully appreciate the depth and scope of LOTR

Its like judging the HP books with the movies - while not as lacking as HP, you can't do it!!!

I completely appreciate what you guys are saying, and at some stage I will get round to reading the books, but please if anyone can summarise the answer to my question as to what the book says about why Frodo goes to the West, I'd appreciate it - please! I feel like I've been left hanging! I want spoilers, so please email me paxcorreia@hotmail.com if you dont want to write it here!
