Low number vs High Number

Can someone explain to me why a costume card # low is perceived by some to be more valuable than one #'d high?

I don't understand this concept and would think who cares what number it is in the run unless it is a variant?

Why would 50/1000 be worth more than 930/1000?

Doesn't make any sense to me....

It doesn't bother me. But if I am given a choice I'd go for 50/1500 rather than 48/1500, simply because it's a nicer number!! Mind you once it's in my folder I am not bothered whether it's 1/500 or 237/500...

It's sort of a tradition with collectibles that a low number is more valuable.  It doesn't matter whether the item is a trading card or a statute or a lithograph.  I think collectors naturally gravitate toward the low number, but also dealers perpetuate the idea because it allows them to charge more for an item.

Its like the obsession with earlier editions of books - a 1997 1st ed copy of Philosopher Stone can fetch up to $25 000 whereas the 60th edition that is in your local bookstore costs $15 and has exactly the same words

I say, if you have a choice, go for the one with the card number that maybe means something personally to you.  Especially if you do not plan on reselling.

Just to be a little different, has anyone ever seen a costume or prop card which was a number 1/??? What is the lowest # you have of any costume/prop card?

i think artbox may have kept the #1/*** for like display purposes at shows or for just in case someone gets a faulty/damaged card, because i've seen like 900/900 and other last numbers, but no first numbers, hmmm

Yes, I agree. I think it's unlikely we will ever see 1/___ they WILL be kept!

I think that's why the ones that are 200/200 etc go for so much - about 30% extra from my observation

I believe Darren has peartree card number 4, and that's the lowest number I have heard of, the next one was the 15/30 peartree

YES, I know...I just received my 200/200 Daily Prophet prop card from Olly....it's a beauty. The only reason to go for the high numbers is that the low ones never appear. My best low is a 14/750 Harry's Robe. It would be nice to get some first 10 ones but I imagine the cost would be even more than the last ones.
