In looking at some auctions I noticed the following Emma Watson autographs, which bother me:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=120654508525&si=868k1vyoWqFs%252FrpsVYaW08t5lnQ%253D&viewitem=

http://cgi.ebay.com/Azkaban-Autograph-EMMA-WATSON-Auto-Harry-Potter-BGS-WOW-/160512423910?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item255f4937e6

Yep. . . one of 'em is graded. . .

What bugs me:

Well. . . dots at the end of each stroke in the signature, the 'ma' in 'Emma' in these signatures looks significantly different than in other signatures. . .

And the kicker. . . these signatures appear to be identical -- i.e. likely produced mechanically by the same source, and finally -- the 'Aha moment'  The 'W' in Watson was clearly signed after the 'atson,' so either Emma signs her name out of order, or this is a counterfeit.

You don't suppose, do you, that some enterprising person at the printing site has absconded with a bunch of blank HP auto cards and has gone into a little side business do you? There is a certain Asian country that is famous (infamous?) for reproducing written material with total disregard for ethics or copy laws or ethics. Say it ain't so!

I don't own this card, but before reading Jon's comments, I thought something was wrong with the signature.

I know what you're saying, John, but the printing sites for POAU were in the U.S.  GOFU was the first set printed in China.  For your scenario to be true, someone with access to a blank auto or the PhotoShop/design files would have to send those items to China to be reproduced.

I thought the little squiggle after her name looked funny, but then I read the rest and WOW Shocked  I don't like that all these are suddenly popping up.

I'm not sure how 'suddenly' this is, to be honest. . .

The first counterfeits of any cards were publicized about a year ago, and they had been being sold for about a year at that point. . .

While I certainly post anything that people send me, or anything that I see I don't collect Harry Potter, so I haven't been looking for fakes, and no one has sent me any. . . in fact, I skimmed right over savecoupon's fake Radcliffe auto when notifying them about their other counterfeits.

The point is these could have been on the market for a long time. . . these sellers could be victims who bought fake cards from another seller. . . who knows. . .

Hopefully everyone will be more vigilant in looking for these now, and get the word out when they find questionable cards -- email me directly at collect@webjon.com, and post everywhere you can!

Education is the only way to stop these counterfeits from ruining our hobby.

Here is the auction for the counterfeit auto:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140504185203

The "Report item" link is on the right side of the page under the "Other item info" box.  If a lot of people report it, maybe eBay will remove the auction.

I feel so bad for whoever wins this card.

I told eBay that even though the card was graded, it's still a fake, and to contact Artbox for more info.

I just clicked on the auction link to say something, but it has been ended! So glad. Maybe your message was enough! I feel better now knowing that at least for now, no one will pay a fortune for a fake card.

Just checked out this link! The card pictured does look like a fake! >:(My Emma card clearly has the mma and the ink is solid right through the autograph! It`s hard to tell until you have the card in hand and you can see the thickness and ink quality of the card! I guess the only thing you can do is contact Artbox and maybe they could look at it?As a reminder for buyers out there!(ALWAYS BUY FROM KNOWN REGISTERD CARD DEALERS)and always check the sellers feedbacks of at least 500 positive! The seller was unable to get a refund for the card from the place he bought it, so he's auctioning it again knowing it's counterfeit!  Item:  140505110168

Please report it.

From:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Harry-Potter-EMMA-WATSON-HERMIONE-Auto-Autograph-BGS-/140505110168?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20b6c1d698

Click:
> Report Item
> Counterfeits and Copyright Violations
> Bootlegs and Counterfeit Media
> Counterfeit Autographs

I put 'Known counterfeit card, identified on several websites.'

Hopefully we can get eBay involved.

Unfortunately feedback is pretty useless in these cases. . .   The people who know the cards are fake aren't bidding, so they aren't leaving feedback, and the people who do buy the fakes often aren't able to be contacted before they leave feedback so a person selling counterfeit cards can have an excellent feedback rating.  The current seller has many many feedback and a 100% rating.

I reported it to eBay and sent an e-mail directly to Kay.  Hopefully, she'll be able to contact eBay and have the listing removed.

I was just taking a good look at the photo of the card.  The grading from Beckett is only for the condition of the card.  It does not authenticate the signature.  However, I think the grading is what is misleading people into thinking that the auto is real.

Not exactly.  They gave the autograph a grade of 10.  If they thought it was a forgery they would have refused to grade it.

And, the grading on the card means they didn't catch that it was a fake too.  A friend pointed out that the surface is graded a 6, and according to them that is the hardest part of a card to forge unless you know the exact paper stock used in the original.

Again, if they suspect a card is not legit it does not get slabbed.  They send it back with a note on why they cannot grade it.  This happens all the time with vintage cards where someone trims off a minute part of an edge to make perfect corners.

Basically, Beckett was fooled on this one.

eBay hasn't removed it yet either. I am getting nervous for the winner. Right now, the high bidder bids on a ton of cards. They won several of Xeno Lovegood's autos I was bidding on. I think they try to get cards for good prices to re-sell, so if they win, we will see this one again....

The card could be one that was not signed, so it will be perfect physically. There are lots of missing signature cards around.
I have some myself. One I pulled was stuck to the back of a signed one. Naturally, it was a Warwick Davis, duh.
All the faker had to do was add a signature.
