Okay, there was either a typo or I misread it... said he was head of the Department by 2007 & started at age 17.  Does that mean the series wrapped up in 1997 timewise or it was supposed to read 2017?

Harry was born in 1980, so he entered Hogwarts in 1991 at the age of 11 and turned 17 in 1997.  He would be 17 until his next birthday in July 1998.  He must have been hired as an auror in, say, June 1998, not long before turning 18.

Yeah, but don't forget that the job probably wasn't quite as taxing or dangerous as it was back when Mad-Eye was at the top of his game. The older aurors probably figured it was safe to retire to enjoy their remaining limbs and other body parts.
