ebay account stolen

2 weeks ago someone stolen my ebay account. For the first time in ages I didn't sign on over the weekend and on monday when i went to sign in I found my password had been changed. So i found a way into my account and someone had list 2000,00 worth a i think stereo equipment and it had been brought now. I had a email from the buyer wanting to pay me.
I contacted the buyer and told him i knew nothing about it and then contacted  ebay after 2 weeks the reimbursed me the listing fees and all the final fees and other fee that this person charged to my account.
But what gets me is how that person got my password as no one but me knows it .
Has this happened to anyone else ??/

This happened to me last November.  The first time I noticed something wrong was when I stopped getting email notifications for auctions I'd bid on.  I kept sending emails to eBay to tell them I was having a problem with my account, but they never responded.  The man who stole my account had changed the email address, and he was getting all the emails responding to my complaints.  Somehow, a customer service person managed to change my email address temporarily, and I started getting emails from people asking for specs on laptops.  

When I looked more closely at my account, I found auctions for laptops.  I've never sold on eBay, so I was lucky that the guy had to use his own credit card for the fees.  In fact, I still have a $41 credit on my seller account (that he opened).  eBay refunded some fees because they cancelled his last auction when he was caught.

I finally figured out that I had responded to a spoof email that looked exactly like other eBay emails.  This one claimed to be for a security update.  When I clicked on the link, the website address appeared to belong to eBay.  I had to enter my password to get on the "site," and that's how that man was able to access my account.

I really kicked myself afterward.  I've gotten other spoof emails from credit card companies and the like, and knew better than to respond.  I don't know why I responded to the fake eBay email.  It just seemed real I guess.

Mcgonagall, if you weren't all ready advised this by eBay, you should change the passwords for your email account and PayPal, especially if they are the same or similar to your old eBay password.  Also, if you access your credit card account online, you should change that password, too.

I have changed every passwords i have and no 2 are the same and none are anything anyone would guess plus i add numbers as well.

I am just happy at the great response from ebay . They got straight to the problem and fixed it .

So i am not out of pocket just a bit wiser


but just thought i would put this up as a warning so no one else get done

Yeah those emails are really bad - the trick is just to always check where the link is going before you click on it. You can normally see that at the bottom of the email window when you hover over it, but if you right click and go properties on the link that should tell you also.

Mcgonagall, how did you get back into your account after it had been stolen?

I had set up 2 ways to get into my account one ways the normal password through ebay the other was a msn pass account where you sign in with msn and they take you through to ebay . The person had changed my password on my ebay account but not on the pass account  so i went into my account that way and noticed all the changes
then I changed back my email address and email ebay and told them what had happened .
I am glad now that I did have the 2 ways

Great advise and warnings!  I am so tired of the scum out there doing this to people!

 is the other way that you can get into ebay
