Well... what do I do now? 10 years ago I took a trip to the Jodrell Bank observatory, and whilst I was there I purchased a pencil with all the planets on it in order... now I find that my pencil is defunct... Pluto is no longer a planet  Since it was only discovered in 1930 it seems such a shame to oust it before it's 80th birthday. So what do I do now? Do you think they'll refund my 20p?  *notice I have no sympathy for pluto here... just my own inaccurate pencil  * Goodbye Pluto P.S. How great is it that the Wikipedia entry is already up to date I know that's the beauty of an online encyclopaedia, whatever it's other flaws  |

Perhaps... but what if Mercury is next... I suppose that's ok as I can just sharpen that end... but then what? What if Mars is culled too?

Hee hee, to be fair pluto was teeny tiny - after all it took til 1930 for anyone to spot it even existed , I don't believe any other planet's really in danger... but it does make us feel a little more lonely (just the 8 planets now). |

According to the news I've heard, it's now a micro-planet. So I guess micro-planets aren't really planets even though it still has "planet" in the description? Why don't they just call it a moon or something? |

Dwarf is probably too politically incorrect for our scientists to say. It might offend the "little people".  |

... and indeed the dog. And although we've gone politically correct mad, I don't think we've culled the word dwarf yet, although shorter people are supposed to be called "vertically challenged" which I think I would find MORE insulting |

My son is equally perturbed that Pluto is no longer a planet, but he'll start school with the knowledge that we now have 8 planets and that Laika was the first dog in space. Don't ask...

Why dont these astronomers realise that small is beautiful...pluto should not be chucked out of the 'planet club' just because it is a little smaller than others I look to Tolkien for inspiration here... look at Gimli, Merry, Pippin, Sam, Frodo...all small but all deserve the same acolades as their peers, they are just as tough and just as good as any other. So why do we not see Pluto as the same? He has taken last place for many years, now he is just going to be axed....I dont like it one bit.  |

He hee.. I agree, the point is that plutos orbit is affected by the gravity of the other planets, so it doesn't have complete independance... and apparently there are a few other planets/protoplanets/dwarf planets and or micro-planets to join in as planets if Pluto remained a planet (as they are of similar size).... I say - the more the merrier - make those school kids memorise as many planets as can be fitted upon a pencil |

Good thing an atmosphere is not a basis of being a planet. Think of all the moons of Jupiter and Saturn with atmospheres and Greek names we'd have to memorize.
