Well these cards are as cool as beans (no one on this forum will challenge that I am sure) but i'd love to know how you all came to collect. I have never collected anything like this before LOTR, well, that's not strictly true, when I was about 12 I bought a base set of a star trek voyager season one card set from a mail order company called 501 cards [yes I was always a little geek now I look back], only a base set of course, I thought it was great - it was about £2 for a set of lovely photos (and that was about the extent of my understanding) - and base sets are great for kids (and subsidised by us crazy collectors). I think I bought the follow up set to that and then the company stopped sending their brochure, I think they stopped collecting and trading for a while. Oddly enough it turns out that "SIX" on our forum is the owner of "501 cards" - along with her husband. I found her when the Harry Potter set came out and she bought 5 cases and got a cool George Weasley variant. Anyway I didn't get into cards much then, but later on a friend sent Mark a Gandalf auto as (he said) he'd been lucky and got it in only a few packs. I think our exact words were "wow that's so cool but we really shouldn't get into that".... *cough* and the rest is history  Perhaps card collecting (like comic book collecting) in the USA is common but I really know very few offline friends who collect cards so loads of you must have cool stories about how you became addicted.  |

I was surfing ebay for some reason - I think it was for an interesting LOTR present for friend, found one and then I came across the auto cards (TT had just been released). I looked to see if there was a Leggy one (my favourite character) and there was - though the price seemed rather high. I went to the Topps message board to get a bit more info, and ended up buying it. And yeah, it got pretty addictive from then on! Always a case of 'just one more'. You know - Aragorn and Leggy and Gimli... then I should get Faramir for Eowyn and Merry and Pippin go so well together. I don't think I will get anymore though - unless the trilogy set is really good!  |

I was in my local comic shop the day they were released and hadn't even seen the movie, so I bought a few packs and pulled a Frodo autograph, and I was hooked ever since. Bought a retail case for $700 and pulled 2 Legolas autos, 2 Elrond's, 1 Saruman, and a Merry!! I bought two more retail cases after that and just pulled 2 of every signer except Merry. I believe they had 18 boxes in the retail cases.....wish I still had 1 sealed, and 1 of my hobby cases. ztaylork |

ebay... cursed ebay!! I was on one day looking for some books and I think I typed in Lord of the Rings to see if there were any cool hardcover editions. And so some cards came up in the search and I was instantly hooked. This was just after TT had come out so I started buying the lower end autos like Galadriel and Faramir and I was pretty stingy at first as I had a $45 limit per auto at the time. Of course in a few months I was spending hundreds to get autos  |

I started out collecting Decipher's LOTR's cards in November of 2001 just before the release of The Fellowship in December. No one in my area was selling the Topps cards and I did not find out about them until The Fellowship Update set was released. I was searching for Decipher Foil LOTR's cards on eBay and found the Topps Auto & Clothing cards and I was hooked. I too followed the path taken by 300Spartans!! Bye the way - very cool name. I assume you saw the movie. |

My brother had been collecting for years. I took no notice, 'till I discovered there was going to be a set for LOTR (with autographs ). So I bought a couple of boxes....... Then I discovered they were on sale in stores...... so I bought loads of packs.... and more packs...... Then, one day I was surfing the net........ I heard a voice.......... I typed the magic words.......... ebay.com The rest is history   To this day, I can't remember how I found ebay. It just happened. Honest officer  I'm over 500 transactions on ebay now. LOL we found ebay when Mark was trying to recapture his youth - we (by which I mean he) bought a really bashed up but working Game and Watch - Donkey Kong II
(his nassssty brother had stamped on the original one in a mood) - hmm his brother is registered on this forum so I wonder if he will come on and defend himself
(and if he does might I point out that he could make up for it by buying a new in box one on ebay... it might set him back £200 though - hahahahahaha)

Blimey - how young are you?? I am 24 and bought the blue super mario game and watch in 1991 (it came out in 89 in Japan but it took even longer for people in the UK to get things back then!!)

Really? Well as far as I could see, they were not really that big here unless I really missed something I know there were those game consoles that looked similar to these ones, but I can't recall if they were the same. Just remember we in Oz miss out on alot of cool stuff! |

In Oz they were released under a licence by Futuretronics, I know 3 people in Sydney who collect them....  but I agree, I think they were most popular in Japan and Europe |

Now that's taken me back down memory lane Roz - I think we are of similar age! I had the Nintendo 'Snoopy Tennis' game, and later 'Donek Kong'. They were cool - until the Gameboy came along!
I discovered Ebay nearly 3 years ago - think i read something about it, and suprisingly started off as a seller. I had a ferry voucher which I'd won in a competition and sold it for £10.50 - the addiction started from there!
