I don't think this set has gone down well in the UK as most of us have not seen even one episode i have seen 1 or 2 boxes of it but most dealers did not take it cause it has not got to the UK yet ( although i think it is shown on some obscure channel here?? )

What can I say - I liked Buffy, hated Charmed. Like Veronica Mars, hate Alias, Like Supernatural, hate Ghost Whisperer. LOVE American Idol, hate every other reality TV show.

It's like some big coming of age thing in the States isn't it? I get the impression that it's not a good night for devout Christians

Don't be so sure on the 'no-Prom-night' thing in the UK Roz!
I've listened to work colleagues going on about how their teenage daughters are busy buying (I should  say getting their parents to buy) dresses and all the rest of the gear and the teenage lads are off hiring suits for the grand occasion too!
It was unheard of when I was that age many eons ago, but I think you'll find it's not the case nowadays.
I'm not sure if all the secondary schools have a Prom night or not, but I bet there's more of them that do than don't.
Jeez ... suppose that's summat else I have to look forward to with Adam .... him wanting a suit to impress the girls!

Well there's usually a 'leavers ball' now but I don't think everyone books a hotel room afterwards like they seem to in the States.

No I don't think the hotel room booking is widespread here and I don't think it's quite the grand occasion it is in the States either.
Oh well, guess I'll have to wait and see won't I?

hmmm, as far as I know proms dont feature in Aussie high schools at all. We have formals instead which is probably similar, but doesnt carry quite the same expectation as a typical US prom...

You all have some very odd notions about US Proms The "prom" is simply the end-of-high school formal dance. It does not necessarily involve "relations" with your partner. There are usually after-parties held and again, sex is not expected, maybe hoped for, but not expected. There will always be those kids who'll take advantage of any situation to try to get lucky, and there are those kids for whom the prom is "the" thing, the event where they'll become a man or a woman, but for the vast majority of kids, it's an excuse to dress up and party all night long.

American TV shows really portray this poorly. Then again, American soap operas have us sleeping with our fathers/brothers/ priests, dead people, etc.

My sister-in-law is going to her third prom this year (with the third different guy! - this one is actually her prom) and it really is about the dressing up and acting like an adult. Plus, if she ever thought about having sex, her dad would kill her. And the boy.

A lot of the after-parties are held with parental approval and supervision, so the kids aren't tempted to drink and drive.

I've never been interested in going to the prom. The only real dance I ever went to was my Fifth Grade Banquet and I only went to that because it was during school hours

And I do love the old prom pictures, but my mom wont show me hers
