Say it isn't so FTK!!  How has the weather been in your part of the world? We are into full summer here and today is our Independence Day - July 4th!!  Several of the surrounding towns have had fireworks displays, we saw a good one last night but today is the largest one in the area at the Mount Washington Resort & Hotel. It is one of what we call the Grand Hotels built at the turn of the 1900's that catered to the wealthy families from all over the east coast of the United States. It is huge and now serves families on vacation and corporate events. The backdrop is the White Mountain Range and the fireworks against it are awsome. We are heading over this afternoon for a cookout and to listen to music from 4 bands before the fireworks start at 9:45 P.M. this evening. |

To savage and all other US forum members - happy July 4! Have a good one and behave yourselves! Its the middle of winter here in Australia, though it isn't as cold here in Sydney as where I live when I am not at university - gets to minus 6 degrees there!  (I know you guys in the US use Farenheit, but not sure how to convert that off the top of my head!). Your celebrations sound fantastic and against the backdrop of a mountain range, the fireworks would be spectacular! Unfortunately we have not been able to have firework displays for quite a while here as we are in a drought state and it is considered too much of a fire hazard which is disappointing, but of course, safety comes first! Enjoy the festivities!  FTY |

Hi FTY: Well the fireworks on the 4th were outstanding to put it mildly. The weather cooperated and the music was very good. To convert temps to Farenheit just add 32 to your number. I hope your drought ends soon! Thanks for the Independence Day well wishes!! |

Minus 6? Mark and I once spent 4 hours repairing equipment out on some marshes on the east coast, the ambient temperature was -5 C and then there was a wind blowing from Siberia to give a wind chill of -20! It took us a while to warm up in the car before we could drive home. But that's nothing compared to Ed's temperatures it can hit -40 in the winter - yes -40C! He's even sent pics of the thermometer to Mark to prove it! I've seen them Any photo tampering there Ed? |

I wish Roz!! No those photos were accurate of my therometer. It was -40 F though not C. I would go out onto the deck at about 5 or 5:30 A.M. and there was absolutely no air movement. It was so cold that the air you were breathing in through your nose hurt and it started to freeze up the inside of my nose. But the coolest part was just listening. What you would hear were loud cracks from the trees - the sap was expanding and popping causing cracks in the trees - some of them sounded as loud as gun shots! When the sun began to rise the rays reflected off the snow in such a way to give the illusion of diamonds in the snow with beautiful multi faceted colors. |

But that would make it -8C? Which isn't that much colder than the UK and we don't get proper snow!
I suspect foul play here!!
Have you got the picture to hand Mark or Ed? I swears it wasn't just -8C

I sent this photo off to Ben last night and I remember that on the left side of the therometer it reads in C and on the right in F. The C reading was -36 below zero and the F reading was -32 below zero! |
