Who was the original owner of the Peverell ring?

I know Gaunt infers a link to Salazar Slytherin but.... who is Peverell?

I didn't get the impression Peverell was anything to do with Slytherin.  The locket definately was but I assumed Peverell was another very famous wizard, like maybe Merlin.    Did you think Gaunt meant he was related to Peverell?

If possible can you put 'possible spoiler' in the title as this could well go that way    Thanks

I assumed so, particularly as he talks about the ring in the next sentence to the locket when he was boasting of his ancestry.
