see what had me confused is that hagrid was good friends with james and lily and he was at school with voldermort but thinking about it he could have had the same kind of friendship as he has with harry ron and hermione .

My guess is that Hagrid met Lily and James when the original Order of the Phoenix was created.

Wouldn't Lily and James have met Hagrid at school? When Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts in the mid-1940s, Dumbledore gave him a groundskeeper job.

Also, according to Hagrid in PS, Voldemort killed Lily and James at the height of his power, which (from the top of my head as I don't have a copy of the book on hand) was several years after he left school.
I thought it had taken Voldemort around 40 years to get to the height of his power but it could have been that he had been terrorising the wizarding world for decades. In HBP didn't DD say Voldemort had disappeared for quite a few years after leaving school?

that is true and of course he would have started out small and then gotten bigger and then you have to have time for people to realise what is happening and dumbledore said that when they first formed the order of the phoenix they where heavily out number by voldermort supporters. so it could easily take that long for all we know it could have taken him 20 years to split his sole and of course learn the skill to do so

The HP Lexicon has a detailed timeline that might help here. http://www.hp-lexicon.org/timelines/timeline.phpRiddle certainly terrorized people long before he came Voldemort. He opened the Chamber of Secrets in his fifth year and killed his father and grandparents a few months later during the summer.

have a couple of questions for you all do you think that lily potter's sister ( harry's aunt ) Petunia was and is a witch but has refused to acknowledge it or to go to hogwarts ?? also do you think that the order of the phoenix will still continue ? and does anyone else get the feeling that godric hollows is going to be the place for the final battle do you realise that now harry has his own home and he also is finacially okay but i was thinking that there might be something in dumbledore will that will help harry what do you all think will reading through this section i remembered that we saw dumbledore in the portrait so an idea came to me as dumbledore was a very famous and well liked wizard his portrait is going to be in alot of places and i think that is going to be how he will still help the order of the pheonix depending on how long he sleeps for in the portrait

Well... she's not a squib, we know that much, but what can you be if you aren't a muggle, you aren't a squib and you aren't a witch?... Maybe you are right McG and her prejudice prevented her from going and bitterness from this action froze her in an immature state?

I always thought Petunia could be a bitter witch but I am sure I read somewhere that JKR has said she is definitely a muggle. Due to the amount of knowledge she has about the wizarding world (which is quite a lot) I have wondered if, when she was younger, she was actually friends with Lilly's crowd. Maybe she did hang around with James and Sirius but one of them did something nasty to her - they were known for their practical jokes. Or perhaps as they all got older she was just 'side lined'. Lets face it, whilst some wizards do interact with muggles it would appear that the purer the blood line the less contact they have. The Weasleys had a very poor understanding of muggles before Hermione and Harry came along. Both Sirius and James were from pure blood families and from the little we know about them they seemed to stick to the wizarding world. I think Petunia was bitter about being shut out of this world and that is why she hated Lilly so much. But I am probably completely wrong

My bet is that Petunia had an unrequited crush on "that horrid boy" that Lily brought around. Most people assume that JKR was referring to James, but I bet it was Lily's early studying companion who came to visit: Severus.
Jo said that there would be somebody who starts using magic late in life, but I think she pretty clearly said it wasn't Petunia.

what has got me is that petunia is afraid of what dumbledore had put in that letter so it means that petunia has alot of info about the magical world and that maybe like hermione and her parents when lily needed to go to diagon alley petunia went along and maybe she found her way to knockturn alley lol

Yeah, that sounds good! Unrequited love made Petunia hate everything she couldn't be. I like it!

Actually I thought Petunia might have had a crush on Sirius but Severus would fit the profile much better

IMHO, I don't think Lily would invite Severus over for a visit, especially after he called her a mudblood and she took offense. I really like Sharon's idea that Petunia had a crush on Sirius, or Peter or Remus, for that matter.

Yes and that would give her another reason for hating Harry so much. Every time she looked at him she thought of James. I would love to know what Dumbledore threatened her with though in those letters. I wonder if the deal was that the Dursleys would be protected if they took care of Harry. After all I expect there were a lot of angry Deatheaters out there who would have wanted to wipe James and Lilly's bloodlines from the face of the earth. Actually I wonder if that is what happened to all of James' family
