So, being in New Zealand finally has another advantage. Midnight tonight was the opening of star wars 3 and I was there.
What to say? It's much better than the first two, but still falls short of the original 3. Visual effects overwhelm what should be a great character-driven story, wooden acting, cheesy dialogue and lousy directing. Acting is pretty bad as usual, though most of that is due to dialogue. Ian McDiarmid is the highlight of the acting (besides Yoda). The love scene dialogue is exceeding corny and cringe-worthy. The movie is quite dark--surprisingly so perhaps given that you know what is coming. The PG-13 rating in the states is definitely earned for the one scene.
On the bright side, the two big light saber battles are awesome!! And even though you know what's coming, it's still interesting to see how it all comes together. To see how the characters end up the way they do. It's the stuff the great tragedies are made of. Wow. Chilling in some regards. And I must say that there are some wonderful "money" shots in the film--offhand I know of at least one that was in the trailer and then another either in the trailer or on advertising.
I don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave out anything more specific. Though I'll provide more specifics on anything you want.
Suffice to way that I enjoyed it, even if there were a few moments that were too much for me (I'm super squeamish about violence and gore). Definitely see it on the big screen. Even if you hated 1 and 2, see this. The critics are right, this is more like the star wars that so many of us fell in love with.

I was in the 2nd largest theater and it was full, as were two other smaller theaters at the same cinema. I had bought tickets back in the beginning of April and its allocated (assigned) seating so there was not waiting in line at all Surprisingly, there were only like two people in costume. I had expected more. |

One of my bosses at work went to the employee (Lucas Films) screening a couple of weeks ago. George Lucas just happens to be his Uncle (his mom being Georges sister). He was in the family section and sat right behind George.
Then after he went to the party at George's ranch. He said it was good, he acts so "its not that big a deal" when I am amazed by it.
Georges ranch North of San Francisco is worth over 5 Billion $$$ it is over 300 acres I believe. And if you know real estate in the bay area that is not suprising.
Anyway it would be pretty tough to be the private screening at the ranch sitting behind George!

 Wow. That's pretty cool. Rough way to see the film indeed! And btw, the trailers were for "the Fantastic 4" (I'll pass), "War of the Worlds" (gonna be great) and "Mr and Mrs Smith" (can't wait). They may be different for the US (and other countries). However, they seemed appropriate given the audience and rating. I was hoping for Harry Potter though  Edit: the trailer for the 1st Narnia movie is also showing (it appears it just wan't ready for the midnight showing). Looks so much better on the big screen, and with fantastic sound. Can't wait! |

Thanks Alyssa for the info. Beckham - what a really cool story! Thanks. I would love to have a chance to see George's Ranch. I have seen some of it on a TV special and it looks awsome. Yea Alyssa Mr. and Mrs. Smith looks really good. I hope War of the Worlds is done right as the trailers I have seen do not show anything at all except Tom Cruise. I loved the original War of the Worlds film with Gene Berry! The Fantastic Four is another comic brought to the big screen. I have not seen the trailer and was hoping the movie would be good. I will have to wait and see. |

the amc 30 sold out 27 screenes, they sold out 29 and almost the 30th for ROTK  ( midnight showing) just got back from seeing it and it was.. well.. good yes, the best of the 6 I havent decided yet. they do tie it in well with ANH though. go see it! |

I saw it today and I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Went to the Red Cinema at Salford Quays (UK that is), only about 30 people in for the 1.50pm showing. Biggest screen at the complex (and it is huge) and I came away feeling exilarated, sad and drained all at once. It's quite a ride and so sad at the end (but I won't spoil it for you). The effects are something else and General Grievous is such a cool character. I would need to see it again for a more informed opinion but it pushed all the right buttons for me. It drags a little after the opening sequence (which was thrilling to say the least) because there's a lot of exposition and to-ing and fro-ing. And yes, the way it all ties in with Episode 4 is clever. Quite a lot of questions are answered but one or two things needed a little more explanation. I guess the TV series will chart the years between episodes 3 and 4 because Luke must be late teens, early twenties by ANH. I didn't think the dialogue was too bad this time, nowhere near as bad as the love scene in Episode 2 on Naboo. That was like somebody dragging their finger nails down a blackboard! Still a few clunky lines here and there but it's humorous as well. C3PO didn't feature too much which was suprising. One thing thing that did annoy me though was the way it kept cutting from the middle of an exciting bit to something not so exciting and then back again. Just when Anakin and Obi Wan are getting into the thick of it near the end, it cuts off elsewhere!
Incidentally the trailers we had were Batman Begins (looks ace), Fantastic Four (looks ace and much better than I expected), War Of The Worlds (finally, a glimpse of the aliens and yep, looks ace) and Mr & Mrs Smith (looks like True Lies but with sexier lead actors - suffice to say, I'd go and see it)
Here's a question though - what would you rather be, Jedi or Sith?

GG was supposed to be a little more exciting then he was I mean come on 4 sabers..should do some serious butt kicking! the mace windu part shoul dhave been MUCH better, was supposed to be one of the better fights and uh, unless i fell asleep, which I didnt, I missed something. I wont say it was the worst of the 6 because you cant beat out 1,2 for that but it isnt #1 in my book. Alot of hype on the movie and it didnt live up to it in my books, dont get me wrong it was good, there were some good fights but some parts were like, thats it?!?!?! the whole darth vader thing still upsets me! Good movie though I think I still like empire better though. I may go see it again but like I said If you look at LOTR and how the movies came out there was a year to wait then you find out this started out with what 20-30 years? then 2-3 between each movie? he made some mistakes but didnt loose any fans I got the same trailers, some good movies coming out this summer! |

My wife and I saw the movie this afternoon and we loved it. Like Jason it is not my number one Star Wars movie. I will rank it number 4 after the original 3 Star Wars movies. All in all I did not find anything not to my liking. I will see it again. I just saw a news ticker say that Star Wars earned 50 Million in one day!! Not too shabby! |

Star Wars III has just set the world record at $158.5 million dollars earned shattering both three and four day Box Office records. The movie also took in another $144.7 million dollars overseas for a total take of $303 million dollars worldwide! WOW!! And this is just the first weekend! I went and saw it again yesterday afternoon as there is so much action going on in the movie that you cannot see it all going just once! Very favorable reaction to the movie from the audience after it ended. Priceless look on Christopher Lee's face when the Chancellor orders Anakin to kill him! It's like what the f....k are you doing to me man, I am on your side!! Favorite scenes include both the light saber battles between Yoda and The Chancellor and Anakin and Obi One. I especially liked the way Obi One took care of business with Anakin and left him in a heap minus both legs and one arm! |

Saw RoTS on the premiere day, and I'm going again on sunday. But for those who just can't wait untill it comes on DVD or can't afford to keep going to the cinemas, I wanted to show this link: http://www.piratebay.net/frame.htmlI'm going to buy the DVD when it's released, so for those who also plan to do that, I don't think it's to bad to have a sampler  There is no DVD quality torrents yet, but those that excist right now, is acceptable considering the short period of time since the movie was released. Well, we're re-igniting the ROtS torch here at our house!! The DVD was released today!!! I'm sure we'll be watching it over and over and over and........
Good thing it's a an excellent movie!!!!!
