I am so happy to see that Kingdom of Heaven will open at my local theater this Friday. I will be at the first showing Friday afternoon and post my thoughts on this much anticipated movie about The Crusades which happens to one of my main historical interests!  |

i think you should write it while watching orli.it may affect the quality of your essay but at least it is an interesting story to tell the grankids. while watching your father on screen i got me a PhD.

Just saw it today. Mixed reviews I guess. Wasn't really satisfied. Orli just don't really pull it off--he doesn't have the charisma and presence that say Viggo or Russel Crowe (the main reason why Gladiator was good) to carry a movie. He's better than in Troy but that's not saying much. On the other hand, good supporting cast. Liam Neeson rules  An amazing performance. Jeremy Irons and Edward Norton are also fantastic. Problem is, performances like that from the supporting cast don't make Orli look any better. Some wonderful cinematography. Loved the score. Some battle shots were way too similar to LOTR though... It got its R rating for a reason. It's extremely violent and graphic. Lots of blood splatter. I'm pretty squeemish when it comes to graphic violence and gore and so was covering my eyes though some parts. <shudders> What else? Scott tried to not offend anyone which means its hard to know who to root for. I'm not religous at all, but it seemed to have some good messsages on that and violence and such. It's better than Troy but not what I had hoped. |

Hmm dissappointing - but now I've been told it's not so good my expectations will be lower so I'll probably enjoy it more... I'm a very weird person  No, that's a perfectly valid approach. You don't get your hopes up and its harder to be disappointed. I've used this thought process before. I hope you do enjoy it when you see it! |

I just got back from seeing the movie. I was the only one at the first show and had the whole theater to myself!  It is the first time that has ever happened to me in all the years I have been going to the movies. I could not disagree more with Alyssa on just about every point she made. I thought the movie and Orlando's performance was outstanding. The Crusades has been a topic of study by me for many years now. The Seige of Jerusalem was portrayed as accurately as I have read about it. I recognized many historical personalities in the movie and they lived up to my understanding of them from the histories I have read. It was a violent time and battles during The Crusades were extremely cruel with much descreation of the bodies by both sides. There was also honor and character and it is brought out in the movie very well. Viggo or Russel Crowe could not have played the character Orlando did because of their ages. You needed to have a person of a much younger age than either of them to be the son of Liam Neeson and Orlando fit the bill perfectly. As far as the battle scenes being too similiar to The LOTR's all I can say to that is The Lord of the Rings is fictional, The Crusades is history. The LOTR's battle scenes were copied from actual battles like the one depicted in the movie. I do agree with Alyssa on the outstanding performances of the supporting cast. I highly recommend the movie but be aware it is violent but also historically correct. |

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it Savage. And hearing that it's pretty accurate is great news also, it's annoying when filmmakers take too much cinematic license. I do agree that someone like Viggo or Russell Crowe would not have fit the bill, Orlando was the right age for what the story called for. I was simply trying to point out that IMO, Orlando was still lacking on some of the qualities that really help and actor carry a picture. For me he's still overshadowed by the other actors. It's been getting mixed reviews from the critics so I expect the same for audiences. Oh, and that's pretty cool that you had the entire theatre to yourself!! I've read several reviews that say it actually portrays the Muslims too favourably, would you agree? I know nothing about the Crusades. |

My brother and I were the only ones at Club Dread (by the guys who did supertroppers )and that is really wierd , but the reason for that I figure was Club Dread sucked. (however I highly recommend super troppers) Anyway good to see Savage around, long time, I hope I get to see this movie soon, (as I recently have givin the old girlfriend the marching orders) and we used to movie it alot. Maybe I will go solo as most of my friends have kids to take care of and can't get away. I will be interested to see OB performance as I thought he stunk in Troy, but Eric Bana was great, I think I could see him (BANA) more in a movie like this. OB put on 20-25 LBS of muscle for this film according to HBO first look. I think that was much needed as he had a build more like Colista Flockhart than the Rock. It just seems like every movie he has been in since LOTR he seems like he is still playing Legolas (which he did a great job of). Although I don't know what young actors I can see playing that kind of role...any ideas. |

Alyssa the Muslims were portrayed correctly. They were a very honorable people and fierce warriors. I understand where you are coming from concerning Orlando and the other actors. All of them have been in the profession so much longer and have much more acting experience but I think he did a creditable job for the role he was asked to play. Hi Beckham: I too saw the HBO First Look special and agree that Orlando had to bulk up! Fighting in the Middle Ages and The Crusades was so physically demanding. You were most at risk when you tired out as it is extremely draining swinging a sword and defending with a shield. Siege warfare was brutal not only on the soldiers but also on the civilian population within the walls as there was only so much food and water. Seiges sometimes lasted months if the walls were not breached. The parlay scene is very accurate. If terms for surrender were refused the army doing the seige usually killed everyone in sight when they broke through the walls into a city. The tactics used by both sides are very accurate. I agree about the roles Orlando has been cast into. Sometimes an actor gets pigon holed into a certain type of role and it is up to him or her to break out of the mold. I do not have any ideas for other actors to play those younger roles either! Just go to the movie with an understanding of the times and events taking place and I think you will have a better experience. |

I thought of Paul Walker, he is a young actor and was pretty good in Varsity Blues (as the quarterback), Joy Ride, and Timeline (based on the Michael Crighton book). It is pretty good as I do like movies set in the middle ages, or knights, King Arthur etc. If I lived in another time I think I would pic those days (although no doubt life probably sucked if you weren't a knight or Lord, etc) and probably still was tough either way.
I loved the movie First Knight. Even though it was a little sappy. OB will come around as he matures, just look at Aston Kutcher (talk about typecast) or Sean William Scott (stiffler in American Pie trilogy and Dude wheres my car) yes I do find these movie stupid yet funny.

Great points Beckham! I agree with your actor and movie picks! I read the book Timeline and it is outstanding. I was hoping the movie would be as good but it was not. I still enjoyed it. My wife and I went to the first showing of Kingdom of Heaven yesterday. She enjoyed the movie as well for what it was portraying and thought that Orlando played the role right on. She had some interesting points when said he came from humble beginnings and hardship working as a blacksmith. Then all of a sudden he is thrust into an entirely different world of power and wealth. She pointed out that he could not just turn off the way he led his life and become something he was not. A good point of this is when he works side by side with the people of his inherited estate to dig for water and to develop the place into something better. There are many more examples of this behavior but I would be here all day writing about them. I was impressed with the bombardment of the old wall at Jerusalem and the tactical thinking of defending that spot as a holding action. I listened to the music and score more closely this time around and agree with Alyssa that it was very well done! |

Speaking of the movie Timeline, there actually was a set of costume cards put out. I don't know how you could get them, they weren't in a card set. I think Inkworks might have put out the costume cards. If anyone knows anything about them I would be interested to know.
