How were you converted to the world of Harry? I msut admit I was a bit of a late comer. My mum had been reading the book for ages and told me and dad that we really should. But I have just started my studies and had a full time jobs so I have no time for non educational books. But even waiting to see the first Harry film I was excited with antsipation, afterwards I was hook I had to find out what happened next. I had left my job by the so had more time and the rest they say is history. I am now a total addict  |

I was very much a late comer to the world of HP. I had a friend at college who liked it and read the books etc...but I could never figure out what she thought was so great about it (i hadn't seen the films at all, or read the books). It didn't seem to interest me at all. Untill...the philosopher's stone was shown on tv last christmas. I watched it, and since that day I have been obsessed to say the least!  |

My son scott was having a lot of trouble with reading and one day he brought home a harry potter book and for hours and hours he struggled to read it . It took him a very long time but the minute he finished the first book he went and got the second.
I brought if the first 2 so he could read them anytime he wanted and one day I picked up the first book and from there i was hooked
we actually have % people in the house who are harry potter fans and 3 who are collectors
Me having the biggest collection of course

I too am a late comer. I was constantly mocking the people who were at the bookstores at midnight to get the books and everything. I used to laugh at people who like HP. Then, my husband and I were on a cruise and they kept showing the SS on the TV. We caught bits and pieces so when we got home, we rented it to watch the whole thing. Next thing I know, I am at the next midnight book release. Who would have thought.

Just after the release of GoF... I had a friend of mine who had been trying to get me to read it for ages, but I just laughed and said it was a kids book I even read the first 3 pages of Philosopher's stone from a book which belonged to a kid who went on my school bus - not really interested, I had to say. Finally, after the craziness of the initial GoF release (about 4 days afterwards, I finally managed to get a copy of PS and force myself to read past the first 3 pages and I was hooked - I read the other 3 in 2 days  |

I became a big fan in the fourth grade. My teacher read the book aloud and I really started to like it. Everbody else would just whisper or pass notes when he read it aloud but I hung onto every work waiting for the next chapter. I became a big fan when I won the chance to be Harry Potter for-a-day. . I also won a poster on the subject of Quidditch a book version. |

Becuase at the time I was struggling with being bullied so I felt Harry and me really had a kind of bond *kind of stupid but I was nine what can you expect*. So I felt like being Harry Potter for a day was a miricle and ment to be . I thoguth that I too, had something inside me that made me special and was waiting to be found like Harry. After that I decided to pick the book up and its history from there |

That's great Mike, what an inspiring thing to do! I'm trying to remember how I got going on HP ... ermmmm ... it was more likely my sister who 'told' me I should read them as she's a freelance publisher and before doing that she worked for many years as a librarian. Books have always been very important in our family and I used to count myself an avid reader till I found the delights of the internet (and eBay)! I used to regularly use the WB message boards too and read other people's stories which were based loosely round the canon character ... through that, I met some lovely people from all over the world and I'd happily natter to them on msn. Hee hee ... they even 'persuaded' me to have a go a writing an HP-based story too which was really weird! There's one particular story I still read on there which the writer has been writing for three years!! LOL  |

Keeping in mind that I am from a small Kentucky town.....
A friend of mine around 1998-99 mentioned in passing at B&N that, "Look. There are those devil worshipping books. They are really bad. Can you believe they are kids books? I think they are banned!"
I glanced at the CoS book, shrugged and moved on.
In 2000, my boyfriend at the time (now husband) mentioned that these books were supposed to be really good. When I told him what I heard he laughed. So, that was it, I HAD to read him to prove my point.
I bought the first two on a Fri. night and by Sat night went to get the third.
I had to wait 6mnths for the GoF and was having withdrawals!
So, there you have it. Thought they were devil books and found out they were answer to my boring life!

 I grew up near Paducah. So, no...not lexington. I live in Northern KY now (outside of Cincy). but the lower-west part of KY is rather odd. |
