There are two variations to what is commonly called the Lupin shirt costume -- one is black with gray stripes/lines and the other is gray with white lines.

I finally picked up the two cards, and the material for both variations differs.  The black material is slightly fuzzy, almost a knit, and the gray is a cotton or cotton blend typically used for men's business shirts.  I think different pieces of clothing were used for the same card.

Does anyone know what article of clothing was made from the black material?  It could be his tie or maybe a sweater.  Either way, it seems strange to me that Artbox would use two different items for the print run of one card.

I wrote to Artbox and heard back from them today:

I checked with our production team, and they confirmed that the black material is from his jacket, and the grey material is from his shirt.

Thanks again for your interest!

The two swatches definitely come from different pieces of clothing.  Although, now I wonder whether the "jacket" is his suit jacket or the cloak on top of it!

Ahh how strange!

I suppose this is what they let us in for when they don't name them like the LOTR ones are!

Not naming the clothing has certainly caused confusion on eBay.  There have been auctions where a seller thought Hermione's trousers were her jacket or her sweater was a scarf.

I'm surprised that different items of clothing would be used for one card.  Unless...Roz, do you think it's possible that the black and grey swatches are meant to be SEPARATE cards, each with a print run of 834, instead of one card of 834 with two variants?  Except that the picture is the same on both cards.  Huh

Well, I've just sent off my third email to Artbox about this card, to answer this question.  If they don't get fed up with me, maybe I'll have a reply to post tomorrow.

I am shocked they used two different pieces for the same card.  I am also shocked that they did not name the clothing on the card like last time.  I thought that was a little odd actually.  Oh well, at least they are still numbered unlike other companies cards....

Using two different pieces of clothing for the same costume card isn't unheard of.  Inkworks has done it in some of their Buffy and Charmed releases.  It all just adds to the variant collecting fun!

I think we should start a topic to post pictures of any and all variant Update cards.  I would love to see the different swatch versions everyone received.

We could all take pictures of the Divination class materials and try to reassemble a virtual Divination class prop.   Grin

Artbox replied quickly:

The card was produced 834 in total, for the shirt and the jacket.  We
do not have the exact number of how many of each.

It's nice to get that cleared up!

I'd like to see a variant thread, too. In addition to the divination prop, maybe we could assemble part of the marauder's map!

Yeah me too!

If you could scan just the swatches themselves we could add them to the price guide/card list thing for info Smiley
