1  Harry Potter / The Deathly Hallows Part 1 / Re: Probable Clemence Poesy Fake Autograph. on: February 08, 2011, 06:45:25 AM
I got some PMs about this card. . . sorry I don't drop in more often :-(

The signature doesn't appear to be mechanically produced. . . so, if everything else about the card -- thickness, UV coating, etc match it's most likely a legitimate card. . .

Recently celebs have been twittering pics of them signing cards, or the cards they are signing, and it looks like these things get signed while the celebs are in bed sometimes, or hotels. . . variations in signatures are bound to happen.

This, to me, looks more like a printed signature vs a cursive one. . . or maybe the phone rang. . .

As a reminder for buyers out there!(ALWAYS BUY FROM KNOWN REGISTERD CARD DEALERS)and always check the sellers feedbacks of at least 500 positive! Wink

Unfortunately feedback is pretty useless in these cases. . .   The people who know the cards are fake aren't bidding, so they aren't leaving feedback, and the people who do buy the fakes often aren't able to be contacted before they leave feedback so a person selling counterfeit cards can have an excellent feedback rating.  The current seller has many many feedback and a 100% rating.

The seller was unable to get a refund for the card from the place he bought it, so he's auctioning it again knowing it's counterfeit!  Item:  140505110168

Please report it.

I put 'Known counterfeit card, identified on several websites.'

Hopefully we can get eBay involved.

Please take a high resolution (300 dpi) scan of the card front and back before returning it.

I'd like to have them for comparisons and future posts on webjon.com.

Thanks,

Jon

I thought the little squiggle after her name looked funny, but then I read the rest and WOW Shocked  I don't like that all these are suddenly popping up.

I'm not sure how 'suddenly' this is, to be honest. . .

The first counterfeits of any cards were publicized about a year ago, and they had been being sold for about a year at that point. . .

While I certainly post anything that people send me, or anything that I see I don't collect Harry Potter, so I haven't been looking for fakes, and no one has sent me any. . . in fact, I skimmed right over savecoupon's fake Radcliffe auto when notifying them about their other counterfeits.

The point is these could have been on the market for a long time. . . these sellers could be victims who bought fake cards from another seller. . . who knows. . .

Hopefully everyone will be more vigilant in looking for these now, and get the word out when they find questionable cards -- email me directly at collect@webjon.com, and post everywhere you can!

Education is the only way to stop these counterfeits from ruining our hobby.

Just heard back from this seller already (just a few hours), who said he would refund my money for this card. Good news!

That's great news!

Did they admit the card is a fake?  Are they asking you to send the card back?  If so we're obviously going to have to keep our eyes out for it again in the future. . .

In looking at some auctions I noticed the following Emma Watson autographs, which bother me:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=120654508525&si=868k1vyoWqFs%252FrpsVYaW08t5lnQ%253D&viewitem=

Yep. . . one of 'em is graded. . .

What bugs me:

Well. . . dots at the end of each stroke in the signature, the 'ma' in 'Emma' in these signatures looks significantly different than in other signatures. . .

And the kicker. . . these signatures appear to be identical -- i.e. likely produced mechanically by the same source, and finally -- the 'Aha moment'  The 'W' in Watson was clearly signed after the 'atson,' so either Emma signs her name out of order, or this is a counterfeit.

Glad you discovered this thread quickly!  I recently did post about  this card on webjon, as well as other cards this seller pulled.

Grading services don't typically authenticate, at least not non-sport stuff, so they are essentially worthless for that.

Artbox may be helpful, but it is highly likely that they will want you to send the card to them before they confirm it is a counterfeit, given the current situation I would recommend you go through Paypal immediately to get a refund.  If you do hear back from Artbox they can contact eBay, confirm the card is fake and request that you send them the card for their research, but given the time line I'd just worry about getting your money back.

Good luck!

Where did he even get the card from to put the fake on?

Most likely, in this case, the entire card has been printed and is a fake.  I believe that was the case with the Johnny Depp Charlie and the Chocolate Factory autograph that Artbox confirmed was a counterfeit.  (Details on this are on webjon too).

I'm confident it is fake.  The signature is way off, obviously, but if you also look at the signature area the image fades into the signature area quite a bit more abruptly in the fake than in the real cards.  This, of course, could be in the scan, but I doubt it since it is a pretty decent scan.

The seller has been contacted about this card, but didn't respond (despite pulling down the other cards).  I'll add this to webjon tonight.
