: New edition of LOTR
: Roz October 07, 2004, 12:58:04 AM
I have only heard a rumour - I don't know if it's true!!!

But apparently before the end of the year a £160 copy of LOTR is coming out - with missing passages replaced (as they were originally written by Tolkien) and new illustrations by Alan Lee!

Has anyone heard of this? I may very well be wrong and this is probably a chinese whisper rumour - but any info is gratefully received!

My only problem with it is - if it's £160 it's too good a copy to read... and the only reason for buying it is to read it ;)

Roz, I don't think this is what you had in mind, but it's all I can find at present.

I think actually Rob - you have got it - spot on!

My scant description was wrong in many cases but you still found it!

I agree Roz... I'd feel nervous reading it, but what else are you supposed to do with it? ???

Is there any protocol to follow when going to a book signing? I have never been before but do not want to pass up this opportunity. How early would you arrive?

: Re:New edition of LOTR
: Roz October 14, 2004, 12:58:32 AM
Hmm... if it was in the UK I'd get there at lunchtime!

But since this is the USA we are talking about I daresay 4-5 will be more than adequate... what do our USA members think?

It might be best to call the bookstore and ask.  They may not be set up 4 or 5 hours before the signing.

I ordered and received my LOTR 50th anni edition today. It is a very beautiful and heavy book. It has Tolkien's drawings included inside and nice gold stuff on the edge of the pages. It also has maps in the front and the back. unfortunatly my maps are stuck in the binding or glued wrong and I cannot open them without ripping them  :(. I will have to send it back to Amazon.

Oh no!

Let's hope they only misbound one or two!!!!

Good luck!

Hi Smithy:

The book sounds wonderful.  I too have had issues with Amazon.com but this sounds definately like the publishers fault.  You should have no problem receiving a replacement copy.  My issues with Amazon.com are in their terrible packaging of the books I ordered which came damaged in shipment because they did not pack them properly both times.  This was a large and oversized $70.00 book and the dust jacket was torn and all four corners of the book were bent and crushed.  I gave them 2 chances and the third time I ordered the book directly from the publisher which was cheaper as they did not charge me for postage and it arrived in perfect shape!

Both the US and the international editions look beautiful. Very, very nice.
I definitely think it is more for sitting on the shelf to admire than reading, at least that's what I'd do if I could afford to get one.

Good to know about Amazon. I have to get off my butt and send it back, hoping that it won't happen again. It is such a beautiful book I would have to rip the map corner to even open it!! So back it goes..

It looks a lovely edition and far too nice to actually open and read! ::)

I have to agree on how useless Amazon are over their packaging though.
I tried twice to get the FOTR DVD Gift Set last Xmas and both of them were badly damaged when I received them.
They'd been sent in boxes which just weren't big enough and I had to send both of them back at my own cost which they eventually reimbursed in full ... so annoying!
I also got the impression from the emails I received that their customer services department (based in India judging by the names signed at the bottom), that they were indifferent to the fact that these particular DVD's kept on getting damaged due to their cr@p packaging and they seemed to completely miss the point ~ that I wanted to keep it intact! :-\
I finally got one at my local WH Smiths in town so I was able to carry it back without it getting ruined ... my preciousssssss  ;)

Good luck and do let us know how you get on! :D

Do book signings like this usually cost, or do you just have to buy a book at the bookstore, what is usually the protocol?  I live about five hours from Salt Lake City and would love to go see Alan Lee on the 8th of December.  That would be my first contact with anyone related to Lord of the Rings, as many of them do not wonder into the dark lands of Idaho!!!  :)

I believe the bookstores would like you to buy something to have signed, but I think it's up to them on what the actual protocol is.

What's the general consensus on this? :)

: Re:New edition of LOTR

at most book signings the author/illustrator will only sign that particular book. You dont' necessarily have to buy the book at that bookstore though.

Well... informed Amazon of my problem with my book. Filed for a replacement and they sent me a new one in one day!! They sent it so quick that i have not had a chance to send back the old one. This one is perfect!

If you're a member of any of the BCA book clubs (TSP, QPD, World Books) - They've got this volume for an amazing £59.99.

Go to www.clubextra.co.uk & use your club login. Do a search on "Tolkien" The item # is 3298692 but the system doesn't seem to like searching on numbers!!!

I believe there's limited stock on this.  There is deffo one less, now that I've ordered!!!!

Rob  :D ;D ;)

My copy arrived the other day. It's very nice, but if I'd paid £100 I'd feel a bit disappointed.

If you can get one for say £40 -60... I'd say Go for it  :P :P
