I've been doing a bit of tidying up & thought you might like to see these. They are from 'The Hobbit' trading cards produced by Eclipse in 1992. They came as a complete 36 card box-set, but some boxes had these hand-drawn sketch cards by David Wenzel. They are not as dark as they appear here, I needed to fiddle about with the contrast etc to scan them.

May I present to you, the King of the Wood Elves (#131) and the Goblin King.

They look cool :)

I have not heard of Eclipse, isn't it odd that so many big card companies fold - I guess sometimes the cost of the licenses can be to much - I am thinking of skybox here too!

Nice sketches, ... should I know David Wenzel ?  :-\

I'd never heard of him before I got these. Apparently he's an American illustrator, mainly of childrens books.

I wouldn't mind picking up more of these in anticipation of an upcoming movie in a couple of years.

I have seen a few on eBay and I am sure Paradoc from the Topps board (am I allowed to mention it here?) has managed to get quite a few. Great guy and very helpful. I am sure he would give you details of which sketch cards he has if you mail him.

I have two of them, bilbo, and Thrarin, they are quite cool little sets of cards, but the sketches are amazingly cool.

I have a book about The Hobbit in comic book form done I believe by David Wenzel.  It is outstanding and I was hoping they would follow up with The Lord of the Rings but I have not seen it.  I did not know a card set was made with Sketch Cards - they do look great!
