: MakTheYak is running the London Marathon!!
: Roz April 16, 2011, 01:17:50 PM
Morning everyone! Mark is running 26.2 excruciating miles through London tomorrow (with 37,000 other mad folk) for Cancer Research.

It's Mark's first Marathon. Even before Christmas he was training and running 10k challenges. Since Christmas he's been training 3x a week and at the weekends building up his distance running up to 20 miles so far.

This is a last minute plea for any kind people to sponsor him & make it all worthwhile:

Why not look out for him on TV? you never know? Or come & cheer along! Mark's runner number is 17168 & he'll be running in a turquoise blue Cancer research vest with his number on it & his name (which in truly pro style he'll be ironing on today).

Please donate if you can - thanks all!

PS Before you ask, no he won't be dressed as a Yak...more's the pity... Maybe next time? or if he ever qualifies for the Boston Marathon??

PPS  I miss all you guys!!

PPPS If you live in another country you are excused from not coming to watch... This time. Unless you live in France and in which case, if Paris you can probably get to London quicker than me ;o)

PPPPS If anyone is coming to watch please message me & we could catch up. I will warn you... Mark's not normally as sweaty as he'll be tomorrow!

(more Ps than I can count)S Mark's clocked up more than 300 training miles, plus other fitness training! For a guy who HATED cross country running & went to Computer Camp rather than any sports camps!!!

What time did Mark do? Are you rubbing liniment in his sore bits?  :rofl:

::)

He did it in 4hr 46. It was a STONKING hot day so it was a bit slower than he'd hoped but I thought it was great - he's recovering well and went for his first minirun this morning (a mere 3.5 miles, of me dying of breathlessness miles behind him!!)

I think that's amazing.  We had the Boston Marathon on Monday.  If I'd "run," I'd still be hobbling toward the finish line. ::)

Thanks Cindy, I think I'd still be hobbling with you too! I hear the Boston Marathon (one of the 5 'majors' of which London is another) is quite elitist & you have to have a bit of a running pedigree to sign up... but you never know, once Mark's done the other 3, he might be suitably speedy to do Boston too  :D

For anyone thinking about getting into running (I'm now at about 3.5miles or 5kms ish and intend to stay around that point for a long time yet to come) - there's a great book 'Born To Run' that I'm reading about the Mexican running people which will give you some tips.... but I'm probably telling you all stuff you already know as it's an American book and apparently MADLY popular over there.

This kind of book and the whole barefoot revolution is still a bit niche here in the UK.
