: Post a picture of your nearest beach...
: Roz February 13, 2011, 05:21:52 PM
Well folks it's a miserable rainy February Sunday here in the South of England and I'm supposed to be writing a paper on beach control structures (groynes here in the UK, groins over the US and in Australia 'what the heck is that weird thing on your beach?'). Or at least that is what I understand is the case. My Aussie colleague hadn't seen a groyne (something that sticks across the beach to slow movement of beach material downdrift) until he came here.

So. I thought (as I'm clearly distracting myself by being here on the Shack) it might be great if we all posted pictures of our nearest beach. Also, if you have some really cracking examples I might (with your permission of course) nick the photo or some of the context for my paper...yes it's all take take take from me ;)

Here is one from a beach local to where I am at the moment. The place is called Barton on Sea. Quite famous in the UK for the eroding cliffs behind the beach. They're made of tertiary (new) clays and sands, so against the ravages of the waters of the English channel the cliff doesn't really stand a chance.

Here's a nice pic of the cliff:

And in the distance of the image below you can see the rock groyne...

Anyone going to share a beach picture with me on this gloomy day to cheer me up? It doesn't have to be around the corner from you, it could be one you visited on your holidays last year?

Thanks,

Roz

Have you been at the Sherry again Roz? :o
The nearest beach to me is about 75 miles! :(

I suspect my sherry isn't so potent as yours as there's nowhere in the UK more than 70 miles from the sea (with the record breaking 70 mile spot being a little bit of stunning Derbyshire), we are one lucky nation ;)

Okay, so living in New Jersey, we have a TON of beaches....but, figures I have no pictures uploaded to photobucket so I can post here. However, here is something nice for you. It is an old picture, from my honeymoon 10 1/2 years ago....and definitely not my nearest beach, this was taken in Aruba....oh, and it really isn't a beach, but still nice.

At the time, this was the second largest natural bridge formation in Aruba. Since this photo was taken, the largest natural bridge over a beach has now collapsed, so the one in this photo is now the largest on their island.

Wow! Aruba eh? What a fabulous rocky shoreline! It looks lethally slippery though. I'm glad you both got back unscathed!

Not sure if I can find you a beach in Sydney, Australia ???

Heee... I will trawl through my files and see what I can find. Would you like a photo with a lifeguard's speedo clad bottom or one without? 0:)

Kate, those are beautiful!!!!

Roz, LOL...you had to walk down a nice size cliff to get to that rocky shoreline. Aruba does have nice beaches though....this just wasn't on one. haha. We took an excursion from a cruise ship, so there were plenty other people with us when that picture was taken. No one got hurt with the climb up or down. Of course, if we stood in that spot too long....we may have got hit with a huge wave. The water kept splashing in, so you had to quickly get in position for a picture between wave crashes. LOL

Oh, and you have seen the one on my facebook with Ryan and Dane looking out at the beach. I believe you posted a comment on it saying it was your kind of picture. That was from Seaside Heights, NJ on a very cold and foggy day. And for those of you curious, yes, that is where that show Jersey Shore is filmed. Us people from New Jersey are NOTHING like that show...just so you know.

Here it is:

Closest beach to me would be Galveston Beach, but I didn't take pictures when I went. And even though, unfortunately, Galveston Island was complete destroyed thanks to Hurricane Ike the island and it's beaches was still beautiful. My sister is coming next month and we are going so I'll post pictures if I take any then. :)

(And for any Shackers with Facebooks and who would like to be my friend please message me with a link to your profile, I'd love to be friends with you! ;D)

Yay - lots of great photos guys, I'm feeling inspired (more to travel than to write though I'm afraid!)

Would you like a photo with a lifeguard's speedo clad bottom or one without?

Just sheer genius!

I spent my PhD at beaches all around Australia.

You definitely win against hanging around soggy wet saltmarshes around the UK

All great stuff - keep them coming if you have 'em :D
