: Caution - new spoof Paypal email doing the rounds
: ferdinand_the_yak May 16, 2007, 03:59:28 PM
A heads up for you all!

I received an email from "Paypal" today. I have forwarded it onto spoof@paypal.com.au I'm not sure if this is targeting Paypal Australia only or other countries as well. Regardless, keep alert and don't click on any link within the email if you receive it! (the Paypal/Ebay pros are like "yeah, yeah, WE KNOW!)

We recently noticed an attempt to log in to your PayPal account from France, a foreign IP address and we have reason to believe that your account was used by a third party without your authorization.

If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in attempts may have been initiated by you. Therefore, if you are the rightful account holder, click on the link below to log into your account and follow the instructions.

***EVIL FRAUDULENT LINK***

If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporarily suspend your account.

Warning signs:
1. Paypal always addresses you by your name in any email, this definitely didn't.
2. The email went to my public email account - the real Paypal emails would go to one of my private email accounts.
3. I highly doubt you'd be suspended from Paypal for having your account hacked. Frozen account yes, suspension, no.

@#$% fraudsters >:() >:() >:()

I received that email yesterday.  A good rule of thumb to follow is to never log in to any financial site (PayPal, eBay, online banking, etc.) from a link in an email.  It's safest to go to the site and log in there.  I won't even access eBay through the emails they send when you win an auction, someone wins your auction, or someone asks a question.  It's only a matter of time before scammers figure out how to do that. :-\

I just received another one, this time purporting to be from PayPal Security Center with the following message:

You have 1 new Security Message !

Please visit the Resolution Center to resolve the problem. (link removed)

Thank you for using PayPal!

I've had some fake ebay mail too.  Mostly fake buyers asking why a package hasn't arrived and asking me to click a link to reply.  I ignore everything that isn't in the "My messages" area of my account.
