: HELP! Tell me about broadband : Morningangel-Iola March 17, 2007, 04:19:31 AM We've always been on dial up, but mum is looking ta getting broadband. But the trouble is we don't know the first things about it. We know we wanted to get it from the same ISP and I think I have spotted the option we should go to. The trouble is how do you connect it ??? I'm laptop does wireless so as long as it has wireless I'm ok, but how do you connect a PC for broadband? ???
Please help ::) : Re: HELP! Tell me about broadband : mcgonagall March 17, 2007, 04:38:16 AM it is easy you ring the company you are with tell them what you want and they will send the equipment which is a differant kind of modem and you set it up and it is done ( at least that is the way it is done here in Australia )

: Re: HELP! Tell me about broadband : Nienna March 17, 2007, 04:46:00 AM You need to contact the ISP and ask them about one of their broadband packages and what you need to get your computer/s connected.
You'll either have a set-top box if you have their TV services, or a cable modem which is purely for your internet connection. You'll also need an ethernet card in the back of your desktop PC (this is what you'll plug the broadband cable into to connect your PC to the internet) and there should be a slot where one of these can be fitted in the back of your PC tower - there might be one already installed, you'd have to look or get someone to look for you. ermmm you can also get a wireless router so your desktop works from that as well - I haven't done that with mine, my desktop computer is wired directly to the broadband connection and the wireless router re-routes the signal for the laptops which are both wireless enabled. If you want the desktop AND the laptop connect wirelessly, then the broadband cable connection goes in the back of the router instead of the desktop tower. It might be worth you taking a trip to PC World, Dixons or Maplins if you have any of those shops near to you and going in and asking them exactly what you need Dawn. The set-top box or cable modem will be supplied by your ISP, but the ethernet card and broadband router you'll have to buy as extras and the ethernet card will have to be fitted into your PC too. Oh and once you've decided which ISP you're having and what broadband speed you're getting, then ask at one of those shops for the correct broadband router that is compatible with that particular ISP, cos some work better with certain ISP's than others. *phew* ... hope that makes sense ... :P ;D : Re: HELP! Tell me about broadband : Morningangel-Iola March 17, 2007, 04:57:11 AM Oh my god now I am more scared :o Well we want to stay with BT and they have a home hub thing which I think it all works from. I'll get mum to see if she can get wireless or not.

: Re: HELP! Tell me about broadband : mcgonagall March 20, 2007, 06:34:47 AM Advice on Broadband:- Find out your useage(Download/Upload) per month on you 56k dialup now.
Then triple(x3) it for your minimum broardband usage. I recomend this because going from 56k modem to Broadband is a very big jump in speed. Web pages will download a hell of a lot faster and you will then move faster though the net, moving though pages faster, therefore more download. If you are uploading, that in some broadband plans is par of the monthy usage, or in some a sperate cost, so look in to the broadband plan in great detail. What you where doing on your 56k modem in a month, you can and will do and a week on broadband if you are not careful and the cost per megabyte after you have reached your limit can be very expensive! I recomend if you can find a minimum of 20gig plan that is shaped after you exceed your limit, this means that instead of paying for extra download, the speed of the download drops, eg you have 1.5mbps for 20gig but from 21gig on wards you have a 128mbps download. It is slower but to keep you working on the net and does not cost extra. I hope this has been a help. Happy net surfing, This Advice from Dyskord ink! and from my friend Chris lol I am not this knowledgable lol : Re: HELP!
