Well, I broke 4 cases, and I decided just to scan in the Color (and a Super rare one)...I had no boxes with 1 sketch...Topps seemed to have pulled off a nice release! I did have a case with 4 Dalla Vecchia's and another with 4 Shums...that was a little dissapointing. Well, here are the goods!

Oooooooooooooh - nice pulls Bryan! And you've pulled one of Renae de Liz's panel sketches... now you will have to collect the lot ;)

lol, funny thing about that. I opened all my packs backwards, so I looked at the back of each card before the front, this way, I can easily spot any foils, or, if I see that there is a sketch, I put it aside till the end of the box so it is like an incentive to rip through the rest of the packs knowing there is nothing there lol. well, when I got the De Liz, I looked through the cards like 5 times and I could not find the sketch, and I thought it was stuck to another card and after like 5 minutes of searching through the same 7 cards I finally figured out that THAT was the sketch, if I would have went through them normally, and just looked at the fronts, I prob would have never known and threw it in the box of base cards...that is how detailed that card is

I also received a case of this product from my loving husband as a surprise. The "surprise" was on us instead ...

I received 16 sketches by only 9 different artists and of those 16 sketches, only 12 were unique. Below is the complete list (and forgive me for not knowing who/what some sketches are - mine are not as easily identifiable as some others seem to be)

3 Grant Gould "Ring" sketches (all three sketches are identical - 2 are up for trade)

3 Teranishi sketches (one very nice Aragorn and two identical monsters - one is up for trade)

3 Howard Shum sketches (let's call him Pippin, we'll call this one Legolas, and the other has a beard so we'll say Boromir - be happy to trade the Pippin and possibly the Legolas)

2 Waterhouse monsters - I'd be happy to trade one of these too, I promise to scan them in shortly

1 Fabbri Helmeted Warrior
1 Katie Cook Elven Female
1 Leah Mangue Gollum
1 Dillon Orc
1 Oatney Wormtongue

And 1 Gold Parallel 3 of 9 numbered to 45/99

7 complete sets of the Kayanan puzzle (no painting card for me)

8 complete sets of the silver Foil Art cards

7 of the Bronze Foil Art cards (I have an extra Bronze #3 to trade for either 8 or 9 - those are the ones I need to finish off that set)

I am sorry to hear about the bad luck. Believe me, out of the cases I opened, I had a TON, and I mean a TON of duplicate artists. One case had 4 Shums, another 4 Dalla Vecchias, another 4 Fabbris.

The duplication within artists I could have dealt with- but getting the EXACT SAME SKETCH three times was a bit much. Had I gotten three different Grant Goulds, I would have been happier, but you know, I should have expected it. Topps doesn't ever seem to care about collation - I complained, as I know many dealers did last time with Evo and they brushed everyone off.

I'm still writing another letter. It'll at least make me feel better.

Sorry to hear about your pulls Jo...just having finished my case I can tell you that I understand.  I am really disappointed.  I will try to get some pics up soon.  I guess I just expected a little more after seeing the incredible sketches on marlyeds site.  Don't get me wrong I like a couple of them, but most seem somewhat Evo rehash and with no possibility of AM work it is what it is.

I should add the base set is pretty nice.

No chance of aftermarkets on these cards was sad news indeed.  I'm guessing the color cards in this set will be outrageous, but the pencils won't sell for as much as the Evo sketches did. 
I'm wondering if there are still some people that don't know about the aftermarket ban?  They'll be angry collectors if they were counting on coloring!

Some nice cards there...love the O'Neill and Ocampo...but sorry about your dupes.

I had very similar problems with Topps sorting...in 4 cases received 4 duplicate cards...and only 2 color cards TOTAL.  When I worked on the set, I wanted to make sure I exploded with color in almost every card i did and guess I was expecting that color karma to get back to me...but...no such luck.

In fact...in one case...4 boxes had NO SKETCH CARDS AT ALL...a case with only 8 sketch cards!!!...and dupes were in those 8.  I really wish Topps would shuffle those cards a bit before packing'em up and shipping out to visually hungry collectors.

Hope all of you have better luck with your pulls...there's some really beautiful and rich sketch cards out there!

The Top Right sketch is the possible mcrea but I dont think it is see what you think the 06 looks like mcrea and it looks like he has squashed his initials unlike other cards.

Those Gandalfs are Roberto Flores if I am not mistaken

The top left sketch from the first batch of cards is by Howard Shum.  ::)
The one underneath it (of Leggy & Gimli) is by Len Bellinger. ;)
None of the rest look to be McCrea's handiwork Rich, sorry.  :-\

Hi Sorry Guys, top Right is the one I am not sure about, I found loads of shums in Evolution as with everyone else. I had been looking at the scan but it is reversed I forgot about that mirror/reflection thing.  :-[

OK Dudes, here comes case number 2, not quite as good as number one but the Pence Galadriel is absolutley gorgeous and I got no duplicate drawings just a couple of dupe Artists which you would expect from the insert ratio. Let me know what you think.

Okey Dokey, I have finished my 3rd case now and personally I am very pleased with its contents. Also I found one of the Gold Parallel foil cards wich was numbered out of 15/99 there is a scan of this card as well as the sketches.

Well, didn't expect any cases today, but I forgot I had ordered 2 cases from a totally different seller on ebay, and they arrived today!!!!  Here are the highlights of the 2 cases (short of 2 boxes that haven't been cracked yet, my wife had to get a break from the 2 monsters, so when she gets back we will finish :) )  Overall its not too bad, the 1st case was definetly a lot worse, but there are some good looking sketches in there.

Nice sketches, Zach!  I'm liking Ray Dillons Gollum sketches a LOT.  The red pencil bolrog is also really interesting.  I haven't seen one of those before.

Anyways, unfortunetly I will not be able to keep all of these wonderful cards, so some will hit that evil ebay, and some will get traded for my preciuos Arwen, so feel free to shoot me any offers!!!  I will admit my fingers hurt a little from all the packs.  One thing though, out of the 8 cases I have opened now, not a single gold foil art card!!!!

They're gonna tell you to look in the yellow pages for card dealers. ;D
Call them personally and complain when you get the letter. Still might not do any good, but THAT will at least make you feel better speaking with a person.

OK, my three boxes arrived today. Here I sit inside my office with my door closed. I cracked open one box, and believe me that's all I can do alone without getting in trouble at home. :o=  Anyway, I pulled a Colleen Doran Eowyn and a Jake Myler Orc. The orc is colored and is beautiful.  I'm very happy with both sketches, and I hope this doesn't mean the other two boxes I'm staring at suck!  At any rate, Jake Myler is one of my favorites from Evolution, so I'm happy I got one of his now.  Neither of these cards are up at LOTR SKETCH CARDS, or I'd post the pics.  I'll have to take photos and post them this weekend.  Didn't get anything else exciting, except for 1000 foil cards and the one per box promised bronze foil.  Still, I'm very happy with this box.

Those are great pulls...Tess Fowlers cards are really interesting...and Jake Myler's new work is explosive with color...congrats...! ;)

I SOOO remember that *lol* It was without a doubt the funniest Customer Service letter I had read - ever.

I've not sit down to do anything constructive yet-  with Halloween this week, the week seems shorter than usual and I'm feeling time-pressed like nobody's business. Haven't even watched Heroes yet (and it's one of my can't miss shows) but - I will write, and I'll let y'all know what they say :)

artists I have. So many of these that I am completely
in love with!! I am though, disappointed in Topps and how
these cards were inserted. I wish they were "shuffled" a little

Jackie, I'm sorry to see all the doubles you got in your cases.  But you got some nice cards from other artists.  Topps screwed up with collation for sure.  Double sketches in the same case should never happen.

With Evolution the artists were free to color thier cards after they had been pulled out of packs.  With Masterpieces, they aren't allowed to alter the sketches at all.  :'(

Wow Zach those cases and pulls are amazing, I am cracking another 4 cases over the weekend and hopefully will be able to get them upon ebay once i have fixed my ebay account on tuesday.

That seems so sad--I mean, it's weird that they wouldn't be allowed to alter their own artwork if they wanted.   :(

Okay, I'm slow but I had to replace my scanner. Images don't look great with a big dark band right down the middle.

Here's breakdowns on my two cases. I'm quite pleased with my pulls but I'm not totally sure which ones are my favorites. All boxes had two complete base sets, boxtopper sell sheet poster, a complete foil art set of 9, a complete foil puzzle set of 6, 1 bronze parallel foil art card, and no gold parallel foil art cards, unless noted.

First Case:

I would say those are two of the best cases I have seen! Congrats! Some BEAUTIFUL sketches.

Even though I dont collect LOTR for my self, I have been buying for Mrs Orc's Xmas box  ;D and I have to say that I am hooked on these sketch cards  ;D ;D some of the art work is simply so detailed and others are so simple yet totaly effective.  I never thought that the Nazgul could make me laugh until I looked at a card by Katie Cook  :rofl: :rofl:  I would like to thank all those artists for making the hobby interesting again  ;D

Wow!  Nice Zach!!!!  :o  I was wondering, about the backs of those Kayanan cards.  It looks like there's a recessed area in the middle, or is that a sticker?  What is that part with the words on it?

Kelly it's a sticker. Well it actually looks like paper stuck on rather than a sticker. Kayanan has signed in what looks like a felt tip pen so it's bled a little, but hey.... it's Kayanan... we question nothing. The Hologram is cool ;D

I've seen the back of the refractors and the Kayanan and whilst the Kayanans win overall, the Refractors have a much cooler back ::)

Holy Cow! GREAT pulls! I love that Oeming card! So many good ones!

I got my last color sketch today to finish up my set of 9.  ;D  It just goes to show that with a little patience, staying within a tight budget and still getting color cards is possible.  BUT-I don't think this would have been possible to do with Evolution.  I decided to break my habit of buying only Gollum cards, to buying cards that I liked, regardless of the character (notice the 3 Mylers  8) ).  I was trying to pick a favorite, but honestly, I CAN'T!  If I could afford 6 more Mylers I probably would try for a 9 card set, but I wouldn't want to give up any of my other cards to do it.  The Kevin Grahm card is amazing in person.  I love the white markings that were added in paint.  Rich Molinelli's Sam was a must have because I just like his style and Sam is my favorite character.  I had'nt counted on getting 2 of Grant Gould's bad guys, and when I won the auction for the one on the top right I was floored!  And happy!  ;D  Tess Fowlers Boromir was another that I put a bid in on and thought "there's no way I'll end up getting this one".  I was wrong.  8)  And what can I say about Fabbris green soldiers?  My collection wouldn't be complete without it.  Thanks for that one, Zach!  As you can tell, I'm pretty stoked with my 9.  Ok, I'll shut up now.  ::)

First let me post a larger 'Frodo Greeting Gandalf - FOTR' card for Chris that has recently been mentioned here...it's a really 'warm' sketch that is such a seminal moment in The Fellowship as it really sets the stage for the close bond and genuine friendship between Frodo and Gandalf...that first film is my personal favorite as it is here you really get a flavor for this new and unique universe that Tolkien (and Jackson) have created...and...you are introduced to, and fall immediately in love with...the Shire and Hobbits and gardening and pipeweed and the magic of this entire good vs. evil epic...and a scene like this is such an innocent one...just before EVIL enters the fray.

Next...Jackie and Kelly...glad to see Jake Myler get the credit he deserves for such beautiful and daring work in this Masterpieces set...
Kelly, your Gandalf especially is really hauntingly beautiful...(and I love your entire color thrust in LOTRM collecting...some truly great cards!)
...and Jackie...wow, the Gandalf capturing the Moth and the wispy Raith (top right) are riviting pieces and Jake's aftermarket work in Evolution is the best you can get!
In Evolution, I was able to pick up 45 Myler sketch cards (there was a time when these were going for under $15 each, in fact I got at least a half a dozen for under $10 way back when/then) and had 23 of them aftermarket colored...and each and every one was really carefully worked and absolutely stunning (check them out on the Scoundrel forums which you can get to via www.lotrsketchcards.com...find the Scoundrel link in the opening written intro...then once on the Scoundrel boards scroll to LOTR Evolution...and find the Jake Myler Aftermarket Topic that I posted...all the AM's I had him do are up there)...I've only got 5 this time around, am always looking for more and will post pics soon.

And last but not least...I love these sketch cards...I've posted this here on the Yak Shack when Evolution first came out...I loved the simple line drawings (even rushed to the defense of the infamous Gutz Uruk-Hai sketch), loved the pencil toned portraits and obviously loved the full color minature mini-masterworks...and was able to acquire at least one sketch card from each of the 47 artists in the Evolution set.

As I was part of this new Masterpieces set, this was truly a special set for me...I sent submissions to Topps when I first heard that this Masterpieces set was going to be produced and still can't really believe that they responded so positively to those submissions by allowing me the opportunity to actually do 156 (and then 162) sketch cards for what has turned out to be...in my opinion...one outstanding sketch card set, with every one of the 67 artists (plus #68...Kayanan) producing really interesting and idiosyncratic work...each with their own individualistic approach to either great classic portrature, satirically hilarious and sublime caricature, and/or personal scene-oriented epic imagery...all of it rather breathtaking considering most of these sketch cards had to be completed in either the original 20 day barrage (that's what I had to do) or the added few weeks for additional sketches.  The artists that put their all into this set...did so...because they genuinely love The Lord of the Rings...both the written words of Tolkien's grand epic and the cinematic universe that Peter Jackson has created in his Trilogy...and, as a collector...I really am indebted to each and every artist in this Masterpieces set for allowing me the opportunity to put together such a great collection of mini-artworks that I will look at...at look after..."until my dying day."

And it is also special because, as of Friday 12/01, I've completed the 67 artist Masterpieces set also...and this was no small feat as quite a few artists did relatively low numbers of sketches...Walks could only create 21 beautiful portraits, Justin Chung, 56...McCrae, 56...Hodgkins, 56...DeLiz, 80...etc.
I wasn't lucky enough to pull one of those 6 Kayanans from my cases and don't think I'll ever be able to afford prying one away from the SUPER COLLECTORS that have managed to collect all 68 artists...the MASTER Sketch card collection ...but this is as good as you can get...especially on an educator/artists salary (thank god I can sell some of my baseball cards to fund this obsessive compulsive beautiful art inspired addiction!)
So I'm happy and broke...and am really thrilled to be a part of my own collection (hehehe)...

Those Myler aftermarkets are amazing, Len!  I'm going to have to get one of his Evolution cards and soon.  I let a beautiful Arwen slip through my fingers on ebay the other day and now I'm kicking myself for it.  >:()  Like Ed said, please post your final 6 when you finish.  ;D

For the record, I have pulled every artist, including Kayanan, from the packs.  My journey is over....Was it a good journey?....Your damn straight it was...Will I ever do it again?.....Not a chance.....Would I do it over again given the chance?....In a heartbeat!!!! :)

That is quite the accomplishment.   :)  I think there are only a very small handful of people worldwide who can claim what you just did.   8)   Seeing as there are only 6 Kayanan's in this set and I think one or two people have more than one of them it is logical to say that there are only 4 people worldwide who can claim to have a Master Set of Masterpieces.  Yea Walks did only 21 or so cards but the clincher is the Kayanan's.  I don't even want to think of the amount of money it cost you to do this.   :P

Hi all...just a heads up...

I recently sold my "Mines of Moria" card to a terrific and honorable UK collector via Ebay...and just yesterday...5/12...the day it arrived for pick-up...some disgusting human orc decided to slit open the Global Express package and steal the contents...which included both the "Moria" LOTR Masterpieces sketch card...and a submission study of Gandalf riding the Eagle away from Orthanc...

...please keep an eye out for either image as you go to card shops or conventions...and kindly let me know if you spot this sketch card anywhere...

...it was headed to London...I'm sure the thief had no idea what was inside the package...they just saw it's value and I'm hoping they'll try and sell it somehow somewhere...so...any extra eyes on the lookout would be both a blessing and help us in our quest to bring justice to this dispicable creature...

Thanks Ed...I just feel sorry for David...I know what it is to be an OCD collector, and when you know you won a sketch card that you really need for your collection...you wait and wait and wait with excited anticipation for it to arrive safe and sound in your own little shire...I can only imagine his abject horror when he went to pick it up and was greeted with an empty slit package with a note that stated that it looked like the package had been tampered with...

...I only pray that it surfaces at some convention or is quitly shopped around and somehow this sludge is arrested and the sketch card recovered...
