: ROTK EE INFO !!!
: Roz July 26, 2004, 09:28:31 PM
"Todd and I were also on hand this weekend as New Line finally revealed more details about the forthcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Special Extended DVD Edition (currently set to street in December - date TBA). The set will feature more than 50 additional minutes of footage, including some 300 additional effect shots. Among the new scenes we were able to preview this weekend were: the final confrontation between Gandalf and Sarumon at Isengard, the "mouth" of Sauron at the Black Gate, Aragorn revealing the sword Anduril to Sauron's eye in the Seeing-stone, the confrontation between the Witch King and Gandalf at Minas Tirith, more battle footage on the Pelennor fields, Frodo and Sam marching with Sauron's forces disguised as Orcs, Faramir telling Denethor that he would never use the power of the Ring, Aragorn looking down upon a fleet of Corsair ships from a ridgetop, Faramir and Éowyn at the House of Healing, Merry pledging allegiance to King Theoden at Gondor, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli narrowly escaping an avalanche of skulls deep inside the Dwimorberg and MUCH more. From what we've seen, this final extended cut promises to be every bit as good as the previous two. We also learned that the set will feature more than 20 hours of supplemental content.

That's not all. In addition to the 4 disc set, there will also be another special collector's gift set, that will include the 4-disc Extended Edition along with a bonus DVD - Howard Shore: Creating the Lord of the Rings Symphony - A Composer's Journey Through Middle-earth - and a miniature Sideshow/Weta statue of Minas Tirith, which doubles as a trinket box. Todd took some photos of the DVD packaging, so we'll get those posted as soon as we can."

Sounds fantastic - I have never bought the collectors edition set with the Smeagol statue/Kings of Gondor bookends - only the 4 disc extended set, but I think I will this time - the Minis Tirith statue sounds fantastic!!! Not to mention the extra scenes! :o

Thanks for the link Ed!!  Great photos, I really liked Minas Tirith!   :)

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker July 29, 2004, 09:32:52 PM
i liked it too!!! too bad about the beacon that they couldnt include it. mary mclachlan, the sculptor, explained to me that it would be too difficult as there would be a path behind the tower, leading to the mountain to where the beacons were. i joked about the trebuchets and i was surprised that she thought about it and wanted to include them!!

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker July 29, 2004, 09:33:25 PM
oops, forgot...

she related that it had to be that small 1:400 scale as the actual model had the tower, just the tower at over 4 feet tall!! that is also the reason why minas tirith is not included in the traveling exhibit!!

: savage727 July 29, 2004, 09:38:45 PM
Makes sense Ed.  Thanks for the info.  I wish I had talent like that.  I saw in one of my books how GamesWorkshop Designers make a wonderful Helm's Deep fortress out of several kinds of material.  It was huge by comparison because they used their current line of LOTR's figures with it.   :)

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker July 29, 2004, 09:51:25 PM
Ed, you can actually go to: www.thelastalliance.com to see what to do with the GW stuff!

that is what's preoccupying me currently. painting the miniatures and reenacting the various scenes! pretty tedious but rewarding when you see your work done!

plus it is time consuming so i dont get to obsess on other lotr purchases.

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: savage727 July 29, 2004, 10:03:13 PM
I know what you mean Ed.  I have been collecting all of the GW LOTR's figures and sets since The Fellowship was released.  I have only painted a few figures so far, Aragorn at Helm's Deep, Gamling, and Aragorn on Brego.  I have their Helm's Deep fortress but not Minas Tirith yet.  I am collecting all the figures to someday display in lighted curio cabinets.

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker July 29, 2004, 10:06:19 PM
exactly my plan too!! i just got the minas tirith recently but havent displayed it yet!

just painted the fellowship and recently the fellbeast.

will do the horses sometime soon (gandalf on shadowfax, ringwraith/steed, mounted arwen) then maybe the cavetroll and the balrog!

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: savage727 July 29, 2004, 10:15:12 PM
GW has done a great job on all of the figures.  I am amazed at the detail in such a small figure of only an inch or two in size for the human and hobbit figures.  The larger sized figures, The Balrog, Fell Beast, and Trolls are so detailed as well.  Money well spent on these definately.   :)

Do you have all the figures released to date?

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker July 29, 2004, 10:23:53 PM
not all yet but most of the major scenes. got the blisters of elrond and gilgalad, elendil and isildur , some high elves and of course sauron box for the last alliance...got the galdriel and celeborn with mirror...then the boxes.(only have the fotr starter), then amonhen, balrog, weathertop, and others...just got shelob and will definitely get the mumakil that due in 1-2 weeks!!

have you seen the army boxes?

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: savage727 July 30, 2004, 03:23:21 AM
Yea Ed I have seen the Army boxes!  They are expensive!  I am looking for the boxed set for the Army of the Dead.  I have a few blisters of them but have not been able to find the box set.  I don't have Shelob yet.  The Mumakil are going to be so impressive!  Imagine the cool scenes you can create with those!   8)

I bet they will be doing "Grond" some time.  That one would look way cool with your Minas Tirith set as it tries to smash down the front gates!

: dayhiker July 30, 2004, 08:00:31 AM
hi Ed! would you want me to get you dead box set? i am going to a games workshop store in 2 weeks! i will pick up my mumak then... have you seen these:

Ed:

Thanks for the outstanding links to GamesWorkshop!  What a great lineup and I feel my wallet getting lighter every second!!   :)

I have not seen any of the images until you posted the links Ed - again outstanding.  What a great bunch of painters they have.  Thank you for your offer of picking me up a boxed set of the Army of the Dead.  If I can't get one before you go I will email you and take you up on your offer.  Thanks.

How detailed do you get when painting your figures?  I try to go all the way with detailed face painting, clothing and weapons plus the base.

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker August 01, 2004, 07:05:42 AM
glad i know of someone now who's as involved in GW as i am, maybe much more!!

yes i try to be as detailed as possible too. did the fellowship and i'm highlighting the faces again to get better color and detail. any imperfections i find again and think i can improve on i try to do but with demands of the kids, it takes time (sometimes i paint while i feed the kids dinner).. i also do the bases with sand and flock. i need to learn more about highlighting and shadowing...

practice makes perfect...if you conquer frustration.

no prob. let me know. i'll be going on the 13th of august. anything else you may need or want, i can get for you there.

have you tried the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazine?

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: savage727 August 02, 2004, 10:57:07 AM
No, I do not know what the Battle Games are nor have I heard of Middle Earth magazine!  Who puts these out?

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker August 02, 2004, 09:50:22 PM
its a european publication (also avail in australia) by deAgostini. Battle Games in Middle Earth is a magazine that describes the game, how to play,  making terrain, how to paint...it also comes with a free figure or paint per issue. it is fortnightly (biweekly) and should run for 65 issues thought it may extend to 72 issues. it is now on issue 37. australia is on issue #12. it costs about 5.99GBP per issue.

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: savage727 August 03, 2004, 09:05:26 AM
Thanks for the info Ed.  Do they offer back issues and where do you get them from?

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker August 04, 2004, 09:25:45 AM
they do offer back issues! however they charge GBP4.00 per issue to ship overseas!! i called them up direct, ordered back issues to be shipped to a UK address and then to the US. Alternatively, you can order from BattleGames by Mail - shipping is also expensive (and they also charge per issue shipped though they will ship it in one go)...

i do have extras of issue #1-9 but no figures. i thought i'd try them out and i liked the terrain and the painting lessons thought they are quite simplistic.

where do you get any painting guide/advice-or do you need any?

ed

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: savage727 August 04, 2004, 06:34:56 PM
I really do not need any advise or guides as I have been painting military figures, aircraft, ships, armored vehicles for over 40 years now.  I have two  friends who are Master Modeler's and have won numerous Gold Medals for their painting of military figures in competitions and they have given me many tips over the years.   :)

Thanks for the info.   :)

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker August 04, 2004, 06:42:54 PM
wow!! then painting these should be a breeze!! apart from the models, and the cool look of the magazine, you may not need them at all...

Yea that's what I thought too but thanks again for the info.   :)

I am looking forward to the new model of Aragorn on foot that was described in one of the links you provided.   :)

Hi Ed:

Thanks for your private email as well but I am all set.  Did you pick up the items you were telling me about and if so how do they look?

Any info from GW about any new pieces?

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker August 18, 2004, 08:45:09 AM
got myself an oliphaunt!! it stands 10 in tall ncluding the howdah, as tall as the wall of minas tirith!!

unbelievable!!

i also got the army of pelennor fields with all its unreleased figures 9soon to be released i should say). the aragorn of foot is exclusive tothe set however.

no other news yet...

ed

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: savage727 August 18, 2004, 11:25:21 PM
Thanks for the info.  I hope Aragorn on foot gets released as a single figure!   :)  Your new purchases sound impressive!!  I can't wait to see them in the store next time I visit.

: Re:ROTK EE INFO !!!
: dayhiker August 19, 2004, 02:08:27 AM
yup, impressive boxes, yet daunting for a novice like me...

have started priming some of the horses so i can do the rohan warriors and complete helms deep. or maybe i should just do the fotr scenes first with weathertop or amon-hen or sauron..

decisions, decisions...

i know the knights of dol amroth are really colorful (white and blue!) and i love the standard bearers (rohan, minas tirith and elven).

post some pics of your figures! would love to see them.
