Ok, i'm not sure if this topic has been started already but its been going strong on another forum and i REALLY wanted to share my new fav sketch card with everyone so here goes....

Those are so cool! 8)  How did you 2 go about getting a sketch card commissioned?  Are the artists on ebay or did you contact them?

I contacted Mr Martineck - you can go to his website www.warrenmartineck.com to do the same, if you have very specific requests then send him an email or if you want to give him a topic and let him work his magic then that's fine too :)

My one was from Cynthia Cummens... you can take a peek at her website http://www.cynthiacummensart.com/ which is great (as is yours Warren:)).

But if ther eis any particualr artist you are after then you can type in the name in google for a search and a lot of them have websites with details on how to get commish's if they do them!!

I've had personally Warren Martineck, Amy Pronovost, Pat Hamill and Cynthia Cummens do pieces for me..... but there are a ton more artists up there!!

Thanks for posting the link to Cynthia's site and I liked her activity class on how to draw Padmé ... neat! ;D

Okay all you sketch card/commission/mini works of art (trying to cover all bases here) fans, here is my latest commish form Pat Hamill... i think you will all agree, its awesome!!!

It was actually completed a little over 2 months ago, but when Pat originally sent it to me via registered post, Royal Mail claimed to lose it and didnt know where it was even though it had a tracking number.... after we both thought it was lost forever, it arived back with pat early last week and he sent it on to me again!!! SO here it is guys...... enjoy!!

Awesome sketch... erm... I don't know anything about Star Wars, so I'm going to go with the idea that this dude - is his name Darth Maul? Isn't in Clone Wars... or that holding his lightsabre like that would result in a severed leg... or the fact that he's managing a grimace/smile :P

Thanks, I'm quite pleased with my Galactica collection :)  It's been rough to put together and I'm still missing 3 Martinecks for what I consider a "master set" of his sketches.  Still need Ovion, Cylon Commander (Color only so I'm not holding my breath), and Multiple Vipers.

On personalised sketch cards, artists are in no way (as far as i know) restricted. They can draw what ever you (the collector wants)

mmm i might look into that as i think sketch cards of mcgonagall and hagrid would be very cool and i think there might be other yak shackers who would like there favorite harry potter character done too

You check out their work and decide who you want to draw what.... whether you want realistic sketch or something else along the lines of Amy Pronovost  or Grant Gould etc etc.....

I definitely think you could get a sketch card done mcgonagall.  The only restriction (if you can call it that) is reselling it.  I know on Warrens site he asks that you don't sell his commissioned cards on Ebay.  But once you have it in your collection I can't imagine you ever wanting to sell it  ;D

I personally can;t think of any reason why you want to sell on your commish's on ebay... these cards are personailsed for a reason and (to me personally) mean way to much to then just "try" and sell thm on!!

Wow, I don't know the source material from your cards but you don't need to know it to appreciate them! They are awesome!

How much do comission's generally cost? I think I like the idea of it.

I'll say that each artist will charge differently. The full range is from $5 to $175. With that said I would say the majority is between $10-$35 and it's up to you and the artist as to whether it's pencil, ink, inked and colored, how many characters.........all that will determine how much.

I've also gone to comic book shows in the artist alley and had plenty of artists sketch me a card for nothing. I bring my own plank cards (out of 100 lb. bristol board cut to size). And some will ask for a small fee. It's fun to talk to them and see the drawing come together in front of you.

That's a gorgeous card, kbmum!  I'm trying to decide if I should have Myler do aftermarket coloring.  I know it would look amazing, but I'm really fond of the sketch the way it is too.  I keep teetering.

Thanks!  I'm facing the same decision with a Hodges sketch.  I'd really like to have it inked and colored, since that's the only way I'll be able to afford getting a colored card in my collection, but it looks great in pencil, too.  Many of the artists have a backlog of commissions, so I figure that gives me a bit more time to decide.

I just got a scan from Rich Molinelli showing my first ever commissioned sketch!  Can you say COLOR!?  Actually, it's a gift for someone else, but I wanted to put it here anyway.  It's Zam Wessel, the shape-shifting bounty hunter from Star Wars episode 2 (I think it was ep. 2).  :-\  Anyway, thanks Rich!  I know a first grade teacher who's going to be extremely happy with this!   ;D

This isn't a sketch card per say, as it is slightly larger dimensions then a card, but it is still one of the nicest sketches I've ever received. The story behind this: Back when I had the great joy to be living in England for a few years (due to being in the US Marines at the time and being stationed over there), I ran across the address for Cam Kennedy, the artist on a good number of Dark Horse 'Star Wars' comics. I wrote him, asking if it might be possible if he might be able to send me a simple 'Star Wars' sketch, as I admired his art so. Well, he sent back a nice letter (I got this back about a two weeks after Sept. 11th 2001, so he talked about that and, as I'd mentioned the reason I was living in the UK, asked me to be safe about my duties; a very kind gentleman, Mr. Kennedy is), and a sketch, which I think went above and beyond the simple sketch I'd asked if he could do (all this, with no charge; again, a very kind gentleman he). This is the sketch he sent:

Rich - you're VERY welcome!! I feel sure if I point my son in this direction he'd be another one clamouring after a Darth Maul sketch - you should see the MASSIVE poster he has of him on his bedroom wall behind his bed, not to mention the large cardboard promo items of an X-Wing Fighter and a Tie Fighter hanging from his bedroom ceiling too. :o ::)
As you can probably tell, he's a huge Star Wars fan and has been since the age of three! ;) 8)

Casey is correct Roz - here a tune is something very short maybe a note or two while our Hymn is a much longer piece of music - 3 verses in fact!   :)   Casey were you assigned to the U.S. Embassy in the Marine Security Guard or were you at the Sub Base in Scotland?

Ahh, no a tune is the main part of the music (excluding the bridges) it might be the chorus or one of the verses. It's amazing how much we use the same words differently. Apparently the word 'scheme' in the States implies evil. Here it's just a plan, or a reward 'scheme' or perhaps a schematic of a building.

Neither. I spent some time with the Embassy guys every time I went down to London though, good people. I was stationed outside the little town of Harrogate with Co. G at RAF Menwith Hill Station (known to the locals as "the place with the giant golf balls"). Only station in Scotland I knew of was Edsel, and that closed back in '94 or '96, before I was even in. Roz, yep, hence the wonderfully corny line in all the intentionally bad vaudevillian plays, "You'll never get away with your dastardly scheme!"  ;D

Mind who you are 'littling' - I have relatives in Harrogate.

Did you try the spa water which has been used for years to kill all ailments? Oh dear Lord that stuff's terrible.

I fondly remember many a night out, starting at Crabtree's and working are way through to ending it at Jimmy's (back when Jimmy's was still Jimmy's, instead of whatever the heck it is now) and the late night chip shop next door. Ah, good times those.  ;D

Isn't it amazing how small the world is Roz!  Casey with his connection to Harrogate and yours!   :)  The Sub Base is at Holly Loche and has a Marine Security Detachment there due to the nuclear weapons on board the subs.  I have 31 years in the Active & Reserve Marine Corps and am on medical leave due to an illness.  I was XO of an F/A-18 Hornet Fighter Squadron before become sick.   :P

Whilst Harrogate is a nice place for calmer, older folk, I'm not sure it's the greatest place for a 'night out'. ;D the best I could recommend would be tea at Betty's :rofl:

I expect you probably travelled to the bigger cities. The Yorkshire coast is beautiful. Although mists can come over quite quickly in winter.

I did travel to the bigger cities quite often, but you'd be surprised at the nightlife in Harrogate. It is actually pretty good, help largely in part by the surprising number of younger people now living there (though even they complain that Harrogate is a community of oldies  :rofl: ) and the presence of both US and British Military Instillations nearby.


*sigh* It's not the first time, it won't be the last.  ::)

It's almost like the people planning where to put these military installations don't care what you do with your evenings :rofl: :P

(okay, the punchline of that joke is predicated on the fact that you realize that no one in England or the US knows what ever happens to a Korean Ambassador...mainly 'cause they don't care, but that's neither here nor there...)

Well, my husband's birthday is coming up and he has a little crush on Hermione (let's not remind him that she is not legal :rofl:).  Anyway, I asked Kelly a favor, and I can not tell you how pleased I am with the result.  Not only is the picture perfect, but the boarder she made for the card is more than I could ever ask for.  I had to share the card with all of you, as I am more pleased than I could imagine.  Thank you for the wonderful gift Kelly ;D

No, my best drawing is a liger.  It's pretty much my favorite animal.  It's a cross between a lion and a tiger.  They're bred for their magical powers.

How do I go about getting a card like that Darth Maul as it looks superb also I would love one of Chewbacca from episode 4,5,or 6 and how much will it cost me as it looks a great extra to our collection of cards.

Also very happy I contacted Warren Martineck yesterday for our 1st comissioned sketch card to finish off our Batman Begins set,I just asked if we could have one with Christian Bale as Batman with the tumbler batmobile and rest is left to artistic imagination,he's also going to send me a scan of the finished product just to tease me until we recieve it and its a full colour one cant wait,we are going to get this kind of cards done to compliment and complete each set we collect.

Ingrid has some super crazy talent.... i was extremely lucky to find her post offering that piece!! on super realism, its sits up there in my collection with Kelly's Maul....

I really like DAvids piece as well.... as opposed to using the usual Reds and Blacks in a Darth Maul sketch, he used different shades of red more than other colours....

Kelly you really must get the Blade films.   Wesley Snipes is perfect and the special effects ....  :o :o :o.  I think 2 is my favourite, mainly because it has an almost unrecognisable Danny John-Jules (Cat from Red Dwarf).

Just reading these posts makes me so so envious  ;D ;D

Have not been collecting for too long and sketches has just really taken my fancy... and so has Warrens Work... so i have already commissioned a few from him in the Blade Trilogy of Movies (and a few more in the making, but he is so busy... i have too wait  :( :( Warren hurry please!!  :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: sorry only kidding 0:) 0:))

But on favorite cards i have gone through my list, i can decide on my favorite so i have put 3 of them up.. hope that is ok? one is my commission by Warren himself, and its fantastic and the other by Warren is from Thunderbirds, i just had to have this one... and last but not least is a Pence one from Wizard 2 of the LION..  i adore the detail..

There weren't any queues when they were done.  The sketch cards, mine and RupT's, were done around 4:30pm on Sunday (the last day) and only because Allison convinced Adam to do them.  The show was winding down and people were beginning to pack up.

Thanks!  I was truly stunned to receive it.  I stared at the envelope and customs form, trying to figure out what card I'd bought from a seller in Portugal. ;D  It's funny, because Jules told me about Soni's three Sirius sketches on eBay and I checked out Soni's post about them on Scoundrel.  I fell in love with "The Godfather," but she wrote in the post that it wasn't available.  I had no clue it was winging its way to me!

I'd thought about editing my avatar to add that image, but decided against it because it's a pain in the caboose to do so. ::)

I saw Katie Cook and Allison Sohn at Comic Con.  Katie drew my kids a couple of crayon drawings and I bought a sketchbook from her.  She drew Starbuck on it for me, and guess what?  The Hellboy with cats she drew me is one of the featured sketchbook drawings!  Cool.  8)
I got Allison to draw me a Eowyn at the show and it looks SO GOOD.  Very much like the Eowyn I was hoping to pull from one of the LOTR sets, but in pencil.  I'll post scans tomorow.  ;)

It really is a magnificient landscape on it's own...but this scene from the Fellowship is so pure and innocent, and conveys such a wonderous sense of Hobbiton and Bilbo's party and just is so magical...

I picked up a few Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull sketches.  I really, really like Dalla Vecchia's work. :)

Generally, yes.  It's dependant on the artists.  There are a few artists who don't draw ladies that buxom but not many.

Those are great... i reckon that Vecchia and FAbbri are two VERY underrated artists on ALL the sets they have worked on!! They produce excellent stuff, a lot of repeats but its still great.... especially fro collectors cos we can pick them up at bargains prices!!

Yeah like Raj said - a lot of them are.... but i just happened to pick a couple of characters that are perhaps renowned for the buxom-ness  ???

Most of the favorite sketches in my collection are by Dalla Vecchia and Fabbri. :)  I think they do excellent work, and due to the number of sketches they produce for various sets, the prices are quite reasonable.

Lovely selection of heroines Rup & I also agree on the Dalla Vecchia and Fabbri cards being very much underrated too - both artists use their pencil craft sparingly, so you mostly have uncluttered sketches which focus on the characters rather than twiddly background stuff.

That's such a great idea!  I'll bet you never thought you'd be in a sketch card. :D  The other sketches are great, too, especially the Sohn and Pence ones. :)  How are the cards framed?  It looks like the cases are on tracks.

Thanks!  They're in a baseball card display that you can get at Michaels craft store.  The holders came with it and they slide in and out so you can rearrange.  It's not UV safe though, so this stays in a darker area of the room.

These amazing sketch cards are by the immensely talented Sean Pence.  They may look like one large picture but are in fact a nine card set.  I know this is said many times but a scan does not do these justice - in the reality they are simply wow!

To be honest I haven't put them away yet  :-[.  I have been woefully lax in putting my cards away and have little piles all over the place.  Well actually I have huge piles all over the place!  My reasoning behind this is that I will now start scanning the cards before they go in a folder........ now to just plug in the scanner  ;)

Anyway the plan is to put them in a 9 pocket page.  I know they look amazing as a single picture but they are nine separate mini masterpieces and I want this to be seen. 

Topps has produced a new SpongeBob SquarePants set.  In an interesting turn of events, the sketch cards are a Target exclusive and inserted only into gravity feed boxes.  The "hobby" boxes don't have sketches!  The cards are 1:151 packs.  In addition to sketches, there are sponge cards -- actual, dried sponges that look like SpongeBob -- along with alphabet stickers and create-a-scene stickers.

I've been waiting for years for official SpongeBob sketches.  The only artist for the set is Paul Tibbit, co-executive producer and storyboard artist for the show.  The sketches are sketches, in the true sense of the word, but most of the cards are pretty cute. :)  Since I didn't care to buy 151 packs, hoping to pull a sketch, I bought one on eBay.

If the distribution was totally random, you'd still have a 37% chance of not having found one after you finished those 151 packs.  :-X

But then again, you might have snagged three or four.

I bought two packs. No sketch, no sponge. But I did pull a create-a-scene sticker.

(From a separate big purchase, I see that packs of Topps's Littlest Pet Shop list the ingredients for the temporary tattoos: Acrylic Multipolymer, Alkyd Polyester Resin, Phenolic, Modified Gloss Varnish, Petroleum Isopariffinic Hydrocarbon, Petrolatum, Cobalt Tallate Drier, Black Iron Oxide, FD & C Blue #1 Brilliant Blue FCF Lake, FD & C yellow #5 Tartrazine Lake, D & C Red #7 Lithol Rubin B CA Lake, FD & C Yellow #6 Sunset Yellow FCF Lake, Titanium Dioxide. I didn't know that.)

Wow, I didn't realize that odds were that bad! :o  I bought a few packs at Target on Monday -- one for me and one each for my kids' Easter baskets.  My pack didn't have a sketch or sponge, but it did have a create-a-scene and and an alphabet card. :)

I've never seen ingredients for temporary tattoos.  The list is kind of scary.

Hmm...the sketches were only in the Target exclusive boxes and Tom is selling some sketches.  Maybe he has some of those boxes?  It's worth a shot to ask.  I was interested in purchasing a sealed box from Target, but couldn't find anyone to help me. ::)

I received a sponge card in the mail today. :)  I know this is a sketch thread, but since it's the only place where these cards are mentioned, I'll just put it here. :)  The sponges are 1/16th of an inch thick and have no writing on the back.  My kids desperately want me to put it in water, but I said no. ;D

Bogleg contacted the artist and commissioned the sketches.  There are many great artists who will do the same thing.  Occasionally, good HP sketches appear on eBay.  If you look through scans of sketches from various sets (like LOTR, Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, Shrek the Third, and many more) and find some artists you like, you can e-mail them to find out if they're currently doing commissions and what they charge.

A good place to start is the Scoundrel site.  If you register there, you can get e-mail addresses and websites.  You can also use Google to find artist websites.

Also, bear in mind that I told the artist I wasn't in a hurry. In the case of Sean Pence, I commissioned in February and got them in November. As I give them as prezzies, there will always be a birthday or Christmas coming up.
