: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: grecopa April 18, 2006, 05:22:43 AM
Here is what I've been doing in my free time this past week or so....
My Sith Pony-Darth Maul
I didn't know it until recently, but customising My Little Ponys is a big past time for a lot of people.  I like it!  Most customs seem to be girly foo-foo things, but I like the idea of taking something cute and pastel and turning it into something BAD!  Or at least unexpected.  ;)  As soon as I get my re-hairing tool in the mail I'm going to start on a Dumbledore pony, then a Zoe from Firefly.

I love it!  Are you going to put it on eBay?  I had no idea that people customized My Little Ponies until you did it.

No, I'm keeping him.  :)  I had no idea about customising them either until my daughters teacher told me about it.  I'm going to do a couple more for myself, just to get some practice in, then I may sell them on ebay or my website.
Click on this link and check out the Borg pony "6 of 7".  AMAZING!  Also see "Baby Harry" down near the bottom of the page.

That is cool Kelly I have a huge My Little Pony Collection :P  JK

It has kind of cooled down as there are so many people doing it, but doing custom McFarlane Sports figures was pretty big over the last couple of years.  Basically they take one of the figures say NHL hockey goalie for instance and here is an example of one on ebay, I thought about trying to do some but realized I don't have them time.

You seem like the closet pony collector type, Dave!  Kidding!
I checked out the golie link you posted and honestly my first thought was:  His printing skills suck, and I can draw a better eagle.  But $75?  Maybe I should take this up!
Then I went on ebay and found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-Painted-McFarlane-Ben-Roethlisberger-MUST-SEE_W0QQitemZ6052056294QQcategoryZ48978QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Um...wow.  I think I'll just stick to ponies.  These guys seem to have the McFarland thing covered.  ;)

LOVE that Sith Pony.  I'm a huge MLP fan and I still collect them from time to time (much to the annoyance of grantgoboom).  :)
I did my first custom awhile back too.

Jess, are you Grant's significant other?  Post your pony, I want to see!  I just went to your website.  Great stuff, very cool!  (and somewhat creepy)  I like it!

Oh dear I got quite addicted looking at those ponies, and dare I admit it I quite missed the little fellows I had when I was little
Alot of them seemed to have been 'rescued' Ponies was yours an old battered one Kelly or just one in need of some paint work. I know the first pony I had was Butterscotch and I believe she'svery collectable these days so people would die if I painted her, don't know where they all went to anyway, I think they left home, shame could sell them on ebay now they are all the rage age. *Note to self if ever have kids keep their toys until they come around again in 20 years ;) ::) *

: Re: My Little SITH Pony
: grecopa April 28, 2006, 03:02:46 AM
I used one of my daughters beat up pony's and dyed him black.  He was purple to start out.  I usually wouldn't take my kids toys, but her birthday was coming up and I had bought her some new ones!  ;)

: Re: My Little SITH Pony
: Morningangel-Iola April 28, 2006, 03:36:56 AM
How do you go about dying a pony?

: Re: My Little SITH Pony
: grecopa April 28, 2006, 04:53:13 AM
Actually just the normal way, with Rit dye and hot water.  I thought it would be harder.  Here is a great site for a tutorial if you want to try doing your own.  It's FUN!  ;D

Wow!  Amazing craftmanship!  At first I thought that the clothing was sewn from cloth, then I realized it's some type of clay.  I'm not sure which is harder to do, sew that small or sculpt clay to look like clothes.  :o

A new pony to share: Hellgirl!  She's actually up for auction on ebay.  I'm kind of torn about selling her, so I put my reserve at $49.  >:D  If she sells I'll be happy w/the money.  If she doesn't I'll be happy I didn't let her go for less.  :P

Not a pony, but my first custom McFarlane sports figure.  I gave it to my dad for Christmas.  It's supposed to be my dad in his high school uniform (1950's).  The first picture is what it looked liked before I resculpted and repainted it.

My dad loved it!  I'm doing him a baseball figure for his birthday.  I didn't get it done in time for Christmas.  For smooth paint, thin it out and layer, layer, layer!  Or buy an airbrush.   :P

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony

Here's the hockey figure I did for Phil.  It was a Steve Yzerman figure I turned into Mark Messier.
First picture is the original, then the redone version:
The hat is an exact replica of the ones they wore (Phil has one), and he has a championship patch on his left shoulder, but it's hard to see.

Not rude at all!  ;D  I have a few card commissions to do first, but next on the board for me is Aayla Secura (star wars) and Starbuck (battlestar galactica).  Mcgonagall would be cool because I already have a witch hat for the pony.  Hagrid I could do too, but he would be the same size as a normal pony.  Why don't you try doing one, McGonagall?  It's really fun!  This is the tutorial that got me started:
http://www.cloverflowers.com/custom/Tutorials.html (http://www.cloverflowers.com/custom/Tutorials.html)
The hardest part is redoing the hair, but you can always buy a pony with the hair color you want.

HOLY COW!!!!! The Maul Pony and the Hellgirl Pony are SO COOL!!!! I always hated my little ponies, and these are SO SWEET!!! I can't believe what an amazing job you've done!

My newest pony-Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica!  The white circle is going to be either a Viper patch or a BSG patch.  If you have a preference let me know!  She also has a custom helmet that used to be a Pony scooter helmet, but I forgot to include it in the shot.  :P  I'll post another picture when I get the decal for the patch.
Next up will be Jayne Cobb from Firefly, then Apollo to go with Starbuck!

That looks great!  The hair is right, too. :)  I'm in the middle of rehairing my Gryffindor pony -- oh yeah, that part's fun. ::)  At least it looks fairly decent.  I'm trying to decide if I should attempt a lion symbol (not sure I can do it) or make it easy on myself and paint Godric Gryffindor's sword instead.

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: grecopa January 21, 2007, 07:22:08 AM
Yep, it was a butterscotch.  ;)  But it looks like the G3's are only going for about $3 loose on ebay.  Maybe an older series is more.

A Gryffindor pony!  That sounds cool.  8)  Post pics when it's done!

Not really, I'm starting to recognise them all too!  ::)  The Butterscotch came out of Kendalls ice cream shop set, so I figured it was ok to use it.  YES, I've replaced it with another new pony in case anyone is wondering.

Yeah, you're right, Tialessa!  I'll probably make Vera for him soon.  In fact, I think I'll end up putting each pony on a stand with accessories like I did for the Hellgirl pony.  I already have a dual lightsaber for Maul.

Apoxie Sculpt.  An AMAZING product.  So much better than sculpey and it air dries.  ;D

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: kbmum February 18, 2007, 09:15:18 AM
Here's my first custom pony -- Sirius Black.  He isn't quite done, as I still need to find the right fabric for his prison uniform, but I've made good progress on a pattern for the clothes.  I used DMC pearl cotton for the mane and tail instead of pony hair.  I figured that 12 years in Azkaban didn't lend themselves to shiny, silky tresses. ;)  I rooted the beard with hair from a fake moustache that was left over from my son's Super Mario costume for Halloween (and broke three needles in the process).

Hee Hee Hee!! He's great Cindy!!  ;D ;D ;D
The beard and 'tache give him a comical appearance (sorry, I laughed out loud when I saw him cos he's still nekkid) and I bet there aren't many ponies around that have that kind of customising done on them.
You need some kind of burlap or hessian-type material for the prison garb don't you? Have you tried a furniture upholsterers shop? Do you have any farms near to where you live? I was thinking of sacking material that would be used to store grain and suchlike and wondered if you'd find any on a place like that, assuming they still use it of course!

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: kbmum February 18, 2007, 09:55:17 AM
I've seen only a few ponies with beards, including the Captain Jack that has a link on another page in this thread.  It was a pain to do.  I'd considered making a Hagrid pony, but there's no way I'm going through that again, especially for a much bigger beard. ::)

I'm trying to find gray and dark gray/black striped material, but the stripes have to be fairly thin.  I'd like a fabric that has a bit of give or stretch.  Where I live, there aren't too many options for fabric stores -- just JoAnn's and Wal-Mart.

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: Nienna February 18, 2007, 10:14:54 AM
What about using kid's stripy pj's and dyeing the material grey?
Or you might do better getting some plain white cotton or even linen material, dyeing that grey and actually drawing the stripes on yourself using a laundry marker.
Just a thought ...  ;)

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: kbmum February 18, 2007, 10:33:47 AM
I may very well have to do that.  There is one more store I need to visit, so I'm hoping to get lucky. :)

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: grecopa February 18, 2007, 10:13:27 PM
Cindy, I love him!!  And you actually rooted in the beard.  :o  You're a very brave and patient person!!  Good idea for the hair.  I've never seen that done, and it looks great!

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: Roz February 18, 2007, 10:22:11 PM
This is such a random thread... but I love it :) Great one Cindy, I just have no idea how you start to transfer and re-root a beard... that's insane... but awesome.

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: kbmum February 18, 2007, 10:44:40 PM
Thanks, guys!  I joined a My Little Pony forum and got the idea from one woman who exclusively uses embroidery floss for her customs.  It's easier to use than nylon hair, is available in a great many colors,  and is much cheaper, too.  I'm rehairing another pony with nylon hair, but it's a pain.  I think I made the plugs too big and I'm having a hard time pulling them through.

I was so nervous doing the beard.  I knew that if it looked terrible, I'd have holes in the muzzle and the head would be ruined.   Basically, I poked a needle with a loop of dental floss through the muzzle, inserted the hair plug in the floss, and pulled it back out.  I started from the center of the upper lip and worked my way out.  It was an experiment, and I'm glad it turned out okay. :)

My daughter wants me to make her a Hermione pony next, but I have no idea what to do for a symbol.

For some reason, I don't think my daughter will appreciate a frizzy-haired, buck-toothed Hermione. ::)  A Yule Ball Hermione, on the other hand, would go over quite well! :)  If I made the dress out of Apoxie Sculpt, I wouldn't have to worry about the symbol, either.  Hmm...

Kelly, how hard is it to work with that sculpting material?  I've heard it dries fast, so you have to work fast.

Cindy! Your Sirius Pony is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :o :o :o I can't believe you rooted the beard and mustache! Unbelievable! He's great!

I can't wait to see Hermione...could you do two?  Gryffindor Hermione and Yule Ball Hermione?

wow great work .........  would you take a big large bribe to make me a hagrid pony  or mcgonagall one .

Ahh how Hollywood has ruined our book based heros... Ron doesn't look at all like I'd thought (he's not tall or lanky enough), but Dan's perfect

I love apoxie sculpt.  It starts to set up in about 1-2 hours and gets a little harder to work with, but you can put water on it to smooth things out.  I've never made anything that flows like the Yule Ball dress, so I think it's probably best to have a specific plan drawn out before mixing it up.  A scarf would be easy enough to do.  I may do one for my Hogwarts pony.

Any LOTR fans likely to try a Shadowfax? :)

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: kbmum February 20, 2007, 05:05:58 AM
Shadowfax, now there's a thought! :)

Thanks for the info, Kelly!  I think I might play around with some regular modeling clay and see if I can make a decent dress out of that before I spend money on the good stuff.  It might be easier to stitch a dress sort of like a cape over the back and sides of the pony.  Oh, I found some fabric today for Sirius' prison costume.  It isn't exactly what I wanted, but it'll do.  :)

Awesome. I must admit it's been many years since I've bought a 'my little pony' and unlike you two I don't have children to hide behind , but from my ancient and long-distant experiences, I don't remember any white ponies. Are there any white ones?

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: kbmum February 20, 2007, 06:27:16 AM
The new pony I used for Sirius is white.   I think it's name is Rhythm and Rhyme.

Yeah, I try to buy the white ones when I see them.  They're great for dyeing.

What do you think about this business card?  The website isn't up yet.

Kelly--When do you think your store will be up and running? I hope soon!  :o=

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: grecopa February 24, 2007, 09:00:33 PM
Well, I'm working on it, but I'm not too good at setting up websites.  ::)  It's not really a store, more of a place to see my pony's.  I'll have some for sale occasionally, and will take a few commissions, but I don't want it to be anything more than a hobby.  If I turn it into a business, I'll have deadlines and people emailing me all the time about stuff I don't want to do.  I want to keep it fun!  ;D

Thank you everyone!
Here's the latest I've been working on.  Aayla Secura!  The photos turned out a little weird on the colors, so I'll be reshooting before putting it on my website.  She's more of a darker teal, but you get the idea.

Thanks everyone!  I just finished rehairing 2 more, but I need to put some finishing touches on them before I post pictures.  Those last two will probably be all for a while.  I need to concentrate on a viper flight suit I'm putting together for ComicCon.   ;D

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: grecopa March 22, 2007, 10:26:50 PM
Wonder Woman pony!  This one was done for a trade with Katie Cook so it's not for sale.  Next up will be Japanese tattoo pony.  I'll probably have pictures of that one tomorrow.

I love it! :D  You even remembered the magic lasso!

Are you making the viper flight suit for yourself?

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: grecopa March 22, 2007, 10:35:42 PM
Yes, it's for me.  ;D  I have a friend of mine altering the military flight suit I bought from a surplus store.  I got the smallest made, but it's still a mans size.  The waist needs to be hiked up, arms need shortening, etc.  I figured out most of the other materials I need, so even though it's a pretty big project, I think I can do it.  :o=  I'll take pictures of each step, and post when I'm done.

I love the wonder woman pony. I always wanted to look like wonder woman, it still sounds like a pretty good plan, still I've got dark hair, and that were the resemblance ends

: Re: My Little CUSTOM Pony
: grecopa June 02, 2007, 11:44:01 PM
Thanks, guys!  I have a tattoo pony that I still need to get pictures of.  That will probably be it until after July and Comicon.  Unless of course there will be a guest there that I want an autograph from, then it's back to pony making!  I know I'll see Sean Astin again at DragonCon and the Weasley twins will also be there, so a Sam and Gryffindor pony are in my future!
