How long does everyone think it will be before every Harry Potter fan realizes this set exists and the few remaining unopened boxes soar through the roof, and any predictions on how high they will go?  Only 5000 boxes, and it seems that most collectors are going after a few cases in hopes of a master set, and I don't believe much of the general public is aware of this set even existing yet.  Just us adicts that visit the forums.  :)

 :)

The only drawback with the boxes is if you buy just one - there is a chance of getting nothing of interest.

There is a better chance of getting 2 items of interest though.

I don't know that I'd ever pay more than £70 a box for something that may be empty - and talking to sellers this week has given me the impression boxes may reach that much from them by the end of the week!

I would expect prices for boxes of PoA to reach their peak around Christmas time. As more people become aware of the product thru finding Chamber & Philosopher, they will want to work backwards just like people did with LOTR.

I'm holding onto mine until it reaches £100+

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: Roz May 19, 2004, 02:47:59 AM
How many are you keeping sealed CJD?

The thing is with this set that LOTR always had a "craziness" life of 3 years/films... whereas there are 2 more films with books ready and 2 more books and films after that!

Wehay - I'm In! I reckon anything Harry Potter will rise in price as it is a global phenomen, a bit like Disney stuff. Also new kids are always discovering the books. A great card to include in one of the next sets would be a JK Rowling auto card.

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: Roz May 19, 2004, 03:17:43 AM
Ooh - that's something I had not even contemplated!

She warns on her website that there are a lot of fake autos out there (many of us have been through this with the sigs of the LOTR cast);

But this would be a way for her to let her fans get her auto without worries (and she says she's far too busy and important to sign books any more  >:( )

But that would definitely be spiffy - a JK card - if she did 30 of those like the Pear Tree card then boy would Gimli's wallet be in trouble !!!

Info on her website can be found here:

I think Artbox are going to come down to earth with a bit of a bump on the next set if they release it so quickly. I've already forfeited ROTK Update for this set( I'll collect it slowly over a few years costume card at a time like the olden days!). So many pockets have hole's burnt in 'em the size of that crater thingy in New Mexico that they will not be able to afford another such release. Personally, I would have wished no card to have a less than 300 print run, it ceases to be collecting then - it is binge buying! It is out of control!

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: gimli May 19, 2004, 03:41:04 AM
well the first boxes I bought were $50 then $61 then £35 and I see that they are upto £49.99 on ebay when they come up and collectorzone want £59.99

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: Roz May 19, 2004, 04:08:35 AM
Make that possibly £69.99 by the end of the week - NO JOKE!

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: sonarghost May 19, 2004, 05:17:55 AM
I really think it will be quite a while before prices really go sky high, until the philosophers stone comes out and/or the supply decreases.
I still can't believe that there are only 500 cases made!!

Just think we may all have jumped on the next "Topps Fotr hobby box" gold mine!?!?

 :o

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: Harbottle May 19, 2004, 10:28:52 PM
I think you are right. Artbox would have done their homework ( if not their underachieving website!) and known that the excreble Philosopher's Stone release by Wizards of the Coast was a complete failure. They therefore did not want to overdo things with case numbers. Seeing the success of what, lets be honest, is a beautifully made set, I reckon their Chamber of Secrets numbers could be higher. They sell bulk, and do not make money on the secondary market. It would make sense for them to say,we sold 500 cases no sweat, lets double our numbers next time - I would!

Well after a week and a half some boxes just cleared $100, (actually ending at $118)  So they are definetly moving up really fast

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3292655739&sspagename=STRK%3AMEDW%3AIT&rd=1

I really think they will clear $150 within a month.  They are just too short printed and too loaded with high valued cards.   We shall see!!!

not only are they in short print for the size of the movie there are so many dealers and collectors sitting on cases and boxes with a view of selling them off in the future has with fotr, only diffrence here being the chance of getting a hot box.

Gooday mates,
Posting from the other side of the pond, Would you consider $90 a good price for Sealed hobby boxes.  I just bought four, it sucks to have bought on last Sunday for $68 and One Tues for $80.  Skyrocketting.  The funny thing is you could buy most of the cards for less than a box, except the props 200 or less or case topper inserts.  Would you hold on to boxes or open???  I am trying to put the LOTR costume set together and it seems that it would be cheaper to buy all the cards than take a chance with a box and get a Sam Travel Jacket you can get for $10.  Is anyone willing to trade LOTR costumes for HP??

I have enjoyed reading posts on this site the last couple days as no one on this side of the pond seems to have a clue on the HP cards! 8)

I tried to hold back two boxes to sell later but could not resist opening them up - I was not disappointed - I got a Sirius auto, a Hermoine auto and a Black Pepper Imps prop card from just these two boxes! Open! Open! Open! :P

Yes in the "known world" - Peartree's number 15, 18, 22 and 23 have safely landed in our hands

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?

I saw a box end last night for $150

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3294394420&sspagename=STRK%3AMEDW%3AIT&rd=1

I believe that is a new high for these boxes.  I definetly think it is making a much much faster climb than the FOTR topps set.  But I would expect it to, we shall see how high it goes.  :)

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?

Another one just ended at $155, so it looks like the prices are going to start staying on the high end.  Any guesses as to when the first box reaches $200, here is the link to the $155 box.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=37901&item=6100033624&rd=1

At that price it makes buying a permission form for around $200 seem cheap.  I think the permission form and the Daily Prophet card are going to end up being two of the more sought after prop cards, as they are a lot more recognized in the books and in the movies.

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?

So how long did it take and do you think it will continue to rise?  ::)

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: ferdinand_the_yak June 15, 2004, 04:41:42 PM
It depends on what the update will be like... if it is as appealing or more so, I reckon this series will begin to level off. Autograph wise, this series has the lead - Hermione, Sirius, Lupin and Dumbledore will be pretty hard to top. Unless the remaining 3-5 autos are Harry, Ron, Malfoy, Trelawney and Snape, I can't see PoA update being more in demand than PoA... similar to FOTR, TT and (soon) ROTK update sets.

I think prices will keep rising... until people come to their senses and realise they would be better off buying the seperate inserts... I guess the lure of the 'hotbox' is keeping them in there

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: blackcat20 June 16, 2004, 09:28:34 AM
Those prices look good for those of you who got boxes.  I'm in Australia, and was a bit slow to realise the existence of HP cards, so I haven't got my hands on a single box.  Now the prices are too high for me to even consider buying one... :'(
The auto list for the update looks good though-one website I looked at listed Draco Malfoy as one of the signers....now I just have to decide how many boxes to order ::)

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: ferdinand_the_yak June 16, 2004, 09:51:48 AM
Hi blackcat and welcome to the forum! I am from Australia too and can understand your frustration that Oz stockists did not even consider this release worth getting. Ordering from overseas is a bit of a joke, cos not only are prices sky high, but we have to add $30-40 onto the cost for delivery!!! I am hoping also that Malfoy is indeed a signer, that was a rumour i heard too, but that is all it has been so far - a rumour. Good luck with PoA update, i'm hopefully getting a couple of boxes as well!

Hi Blackcat,
Welcome to the forum. Another Aussie here . Perth . We are all in the same boat but i have found that geting a box from england is cheaper than getting a box from Perth so but I also so that draco was a signer and maybe HAGRID if so I want one

chat to you later

Hey, thanks for the welcome. I kind of followed people over from the Topps board...
With the POA boxes, the card dealer I usually use (Ozcards inc) tried to get the boxes in, but they were sold out early...he is getting update boxes in so I've put my name to a few, but I wonder whether I should buy extra elsewhere just in case....

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: greenpaw June 16, 2004, 02:41:20 PM
Hi blackcat20 another Aussie!
I contacted the distributor of these cards in Australia a few months ago and they told me that they weren't getting them in as no one was interested in them  :o
I am pretty sure they will be busting their guts to get the update seeing as this release was so successful. Nevertheless it is still cheaper to buy overseas and ay the extra postage than buy in Australia. Even as a retailer I can buy boxes and cses cheaper from retail outlets in the US cheaper than what i can purchase wholesale over here.
If you are into buying overseas I have used Potomac distribution and they are really helpful and friendly.
Good luck in finding some cards.
greenpaw

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: Roz June 16, 2004, 07:18:26 PM
Bull (ahem - just readingyour new status)

FTY - we get ripped off too - well usually - certainly with LOTR cards - we pay a bit more for the HP cards too but compared to the HP boxes now they look a bargain :P

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: ferdinand_the_yak June 16, 2004, 07:20:02 PM
How rude ;)

You at least have decent distributers in the UK... we don't even have those :P

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: Roz June 16, 2004, 07:21:18 PM
True - we are being well looked after with the HP set, I think that's because HP is from the UK and a  huge phenomenon.

Although I have spoken to Americans (my flatmates) who think that the UK is far more LOTR mad than America :D

(think I might have started an arguemnet here!)

: Re:How long before box prices start going crazy?
: ferdinand_the_yak June 16, 2004, 07:37:11 PM
Yes, lets have an argument about who is crazier... THATS one argument I want to win ::)

'I'm more crazy!'
'No I am!'
'Well I have 2 psychologists!'
'But I  have Dr Phil on a retainer!!'

LOL ;D
