: DS: Wi Fi connection?
: Geek Boy April 16, 2006, 03:36:20 AM
Has anyone managed to get their DS working through a wireless network?  It can be done according to Nintendo's website but I cannot for the life of me get mine to pick up my network.  I've even configured it manually with a static IP and the address of my router but it still won't connect.

My DS came from America so I'm wondering if the Wi-Fi standard is different from that of the UK.  Any ideas?

My husband the computer geek said that the standards are the same -- it's 802.11 -- an international standard.  There shouldn't be any difference between US, UK, or Australia.  He used to work (in the US) for an Australian company.  None of the Aussies who came to the US office on business ever had any problems with wi fi.

I have the DS, but I do not have a wireless network, so I needed to buy the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector.  I am sure someone here with a wireless network may be able to help you better.  But once you get it going, let us all know!

Hey GB, we're in the UK and have it all set up via our wireless network. I'll let my network specialist  (Mark) post his thoughts here, but we're using the Apple Airport Express as our wifi adaptor and all's well.

Cindy's right wifi is set by international standards (that came in handy during my trip to the Netherlands ;)) and both my DSes (normal and lite) are Japanese versions, not that it makes any difference once you reset the language ;D

Well here's the thing... I don't quite know how I got it working but I do know this: Apple Airport Express is a great thing. It basically solved all my networking woes. Before AE I couldn't talk between two computers on my network or play DS but now I can do both.

But then again, I also changed my modem router as well as the Linksys one I had seemed to have some issues. So now I have a Netgear modem / router and an Apple Airport Express for the wireless bit and it works a treat.

Sorry I can't be more specific but networking has always annoyed me as it never seems to work the same way twice. This combination just works for me!  :P

Edit: Well I guess you could always pop down your local Starbucks or wherever they have the hotspots in the UK, if all else fails... but there's nothing like the comfort of your own sofa ;)

And if you get this hooked up and get Animal Crossing, be sure to let us know ;)

Well I'm still flumoxed with this.  I also have a Netgear wireless router (a DG834G) and I'm writing this on a Mac Mini which has built in Airport and works with the Netgear A-OK.  I only got the Mac last week but it found the network straight away during the setup procedure and it's nice and fast too.  But even my Lite won't find the Network.  It's soooo frustrating!!!!!

BTW I have got ACWW but I haven't played it yet.  Been too busy playing Burnout online on the 360  ;)  Some people on that Live setup are just so rude and take things far too seriously.

Mark has an ibook but had no luck in getting the Airport in that to work for Nintendo Wifi... :(

Is there nothing useful on www.nintendowifi.com ?

Nope, unfortunately not.  The thing is they actually list the router I have and go in to some detail on the setup procedure so they must recognise it as compatible.  I did email them about this on their e-support facility but I'm still waiting to hear back.

Any luck yet?

Yes, let us know. When you get it up and running send me your Wifi 'friend code' or you could put me on your 'rivals' list if you'd prefer.

If you bought Tetris send me that one too ;) and Animal Crossing (Sara has both those two, as does Mark, so we could get a 4 player game of Tetris going ;D)

Well I finally heard back from Nintendo and they said to make sure the router is broadcasting it's SSID - which it is!  Failing that, they said the router isn't compatible.  So I guess it's dongle city.  I really didn't want to buy the adaptor, it defeats the object if you already have a wireless network.  So much for Wi-Fi being a worldwide standard...

That's hopeless. I can't imagine that you have a really old router or anything (since you seem to have all-new ;)) so I can't imagine what's the cause.
