15 sketches from my case:

Again, my apologies to those on dial up for the size.

Now to decide which one to keep.  I'm only letting myself have one.

Oh man, I looooooove that Thoeden at the bottom. I would definetly say that was a pretty decent case

My case...
Here's what I pulled.

Box 1 Gollum/Mike D (Duron?) & Arwen/Shum (numbered 324)
Box 2 Hobbit/Hodges & Aragorn/Rood
Box 3 Gilmli/Martinez
Box 4 Theoden/Booth & Witch King/Fabbri
Box 5 Treebeard/Benjamin? & Witch King/Frampton
Box 6 - Shelob?/Dalla Vecchia
Box 7 (be still my heart) - Elrond/Teranishi & Legolas/Kayanan
Box 8 - Sam/Parsons & Gandalf?/Woodside?

Needless to say, I'm VERY VERY pleased with getting a Kayanan, especially one I admired off the lotrsketchcards.com site. I'd actually JUST thought as I was breaking open the last pack "where's my Kayanan?" when there he was :D

14 total sketches!

My reaction to my case - EXTREMELY pleased.  The Frampton is cool, Treebeard is nice - that pencil is REALLY faint though, the Theoden is very nice, surprisingly I LIKE the Gimli/Martinez, the Rood is a good outline, Kayanan *swoon* I kept looking and looking and looking and thinking "No Way!",

Going to try & trade the Fabbri, the Duron, the Dalla Vecchia, Teranishi, Parsons, & Woodside  - just want other characters by those artists

I've got a nibble on a trade for the Benjamin & might trade the Hodges - ditto, like the artists, just want something else.

Overall I was VERY surprised by my reaction to the sketches - I like photo realistic, but these are all growing on me.  The only one I had a negative reaction to is the Woodside & that's because of the character (I think Gandalf looks more like a lion in this sketch), even so I may end up not trading any at all.

Nice sketches everyone!
Ed:  I like the Mitchell Arwen, the Fabbri Gandalf, and I also like the one on the top left, but I don't know who the artist is.
Tialessa:  I actually like the sketch of Gollum the best (after the Kanyan of course).  I also think that the Martinez sketch is really good.  You probably got one of his best.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: Nienna March 03, 2006, 10:09:17 PM
The Aragorn sketch is by Brian Rood as you rightly guessed! ;)
I think I'd be chasing the Teranishi, Rood and Kayanan sketches out of yours Tialessa ...

Out of Ed's selection I'd probably try for the Pronovost Treebeard and the Fabbri Gandalf - which just goes to show that I'm a 'traditionalist' at heart when it comes to art!! ::) ;) ;D

Sketch I pulled:

Sketch I bought at a very good BIN price IMHO.  Now I have one bad guy and one good guy.  I think they'll go nicely next to each other.

I love the Elf card (Legolas or Haldir?).  There is something about the white pencil on the cream background that just looks so classy  :)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: grecopa March 04, 2006, 03:43:24 AM
I'm not much of a Haldir fan, so I'm going with Legolas.  ;D  I agree about the white, Sharon.  I was looking specifically for a sketch of a good guy in a pose looking right and with some kind of color.  Voila!

: kbmum March 04, 2006, 08:41:07 AM
I received my one box today and I'm thrilled! :D  It really made up for the bad week I've had.

6 Evolution A cards: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16
2 Evolution B cards: 3 and 4
4 stained glass cards: 4, 5, 8, 10

2 Sketches:
Cat Staggs -- Merry (?)
Paul Gutierrez -- Gollum

I also won this Hodges sketch of Legolas on eBay:

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

Here are my sketches so far there will be more coming later

Like I said in the other thread they look much nicer in person and I think if I would have seen the sketches on ebay I wouldn't have liked 3 of the 4 as much as I do seeing them up close.  I am actually pretty happy with these sketches.  Even the Gandalf is fairly simple in composition, but looks very nice seeing it in person.  Needless to say I like the Aragon one alot and if I pull a better one might part with it, but if not it's likely going in my collection 8)

Yep Merry it is...you got some GREAT cards!

Thanks!  I got very, very lucky.  And I have to say, the scans of your cards don't do them justice.  They are wonderful in person. :)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: grecopa March 04, 2006, 10:20:23 AM
Those are some really nice cards you both got.  One of the things I've liked most about seeing all the sketches is how many different styles of Gollums there are.  If I had the cash I would collect one Gollum from every artist.  How cool would that be?  :o

Well I opened some more this morning and here are some of the spoils.  The Bilbo is fantastic and the Saruman is also I don't know if a scan can do it justice.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

Who did the Saruman and the Orc at the bottom?

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: DaveH March 05, 2006, 01:09:49 AM
I think the Saruman is from Joseph Booth, and the Orc is Dan Parsons.

Dave.

Once again we have seen a vast range of styles and skill ranging from masterpiece to pony  ::) Half a dozen lines are not a sketch. I think Topps should have stuck with one per box and gone for quality rather than quantity  :(

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork March 07, 2006, 10:57:03 AM
Well I just opened my 4 cases, and the very first box had a great 2 color version from Cynthia Cummens!!!  I also pulled a Kayana, but unfortunetly it is one of the 3 part sketches, but I am not complaining, someone will want it, as it is pretty cool looking by itself.  Overall I was pleased with the pulls.  I apologize if this is too big, I can take some out if needed.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: Nienna March 07, 2006, 07:47:30 PM
WOW Zach!! You got a good cross-section of sketches from those cases!! :o :o :o ;D
Which are you keeping and which will you let go ... or are you having a tough time making your mind up? ::) ;)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork March 07, 2006, 07:56:49 PM
I didn't get any boxes that had zero sketches.  I did have 2 boxes that had 3 sketches, and I had 1 pack that had 2 sketches, that one got my heart going, as I could see when I opened the pack from the back that there were two sketches, and I thought for sure Topps had blessed me with the Rapheal Kayanan 2 card sketch of the witch king on the fell beast :)  These boxes are definetly addicting, I need more cases!!!

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

killer cases!!!
I think my favorite though (simply because the wraiths are my favorite) is the Grant Gould Ringwraith....if you plan on selling that on Ebay PLEASE pm me first and let me make an offer on it

I have to say that I have never been a huge fan of sketch cards.  Not that I don't like them, but I've never really pulled one and thus never had the excitement of seeing one fresh out of my own pack.  But just seeing some of these scans may convert me :o.  I entered the card collecting game a little late, having entirely missed all the LoTR releases (well with any reasonable prices that is).  But I am slowly convincing myself that maybe I shouldn't let this one pass me by.

But I must applaud everyone that has shown posted their scans so far.   :D  They all look so great.  I think the best word to describe them is entirely unique.  I can't imagine the feeling of opening boxes and having no clue what the insert could look like!  Good luck to all those with boxes waiting to be torn apart.

According to UPS.com my case is out for delivery as of 7:45AM so when i heard that doorbell ring I was soooo excited. I opened the door and there is the UPS man....holding a small package, for my dad.

First box I opened!!!! I am the happiest 19 year old kid on the planet right now!
About 90% sure it is Aragorn....but could it be Boromir?

By the way, The Gimli sketch is actually pretty nice! I agree with every single person who said they don't like the cartoonish sketches....but once you see them up close, they are really pretty nice!

7 more boxes to open after some errands...now I have to root for a Cat, Cummens, or Gould!

It's Aragorn... one of the few I'd trade the Leggy I pulled for...

That's gorgeous, now go open more boxes!

Ok seriously....2nd box....

A Kayanan and a Cummens back to back....and my that Gimli sketch looks soooooo familiar...almost like I pulled it out of a previous box? Anyone like that Gimli? I have two lol.

Seriously, this is the best case of anything I have ever bought. 6 more boxes to go....

WOW Bryan ... you NEED to open the rest of your boxes, not run off doing errands and leave us hanging here like this!!! ::) :o :o :o
Well tialessa is bagging the Aragorn from you ( ;)) so I'll put my hand up for the Frodo please! ;) ... I wish ..... :-\

Seriously though, great cards you've pulled so far and I'm keeping my fingers a toes tightly crossed there will be something as nice in my boxes when I get them! :o=

Ok, finished opening everything. Was able to make a complete Evolution A set, and am only missing 1 for the Evolution B set. Also made a full stained glass card set. I must say I was very blessed with this case. Not only did I have two HUGE pulls, but I also had 8 boxes with 2 sketches each. I must say, this is the first time I have REALLY REALLY enjoyed opening a set. well the rest is below.

I really need help finding out what artists did what...some of their signatures are definetly not possible to read. Oh yeah, lol, so what does everyone think the odds are on pulling 4 Dalla Veccha sketches and of the 4, 3 of them are Gimli?

JKM is Jake Myler
The T 05 is Tom Hodges
RAM is Rich Molinelli
The wizards?  It COULD be "Monte" for Monte Moore.  Regardless that's a very very nice sketch
Gutz 05 is Paul Gutierrez
Shum is Howard Shum
A Pros is Amy Pronovost
the Eye is Joe Corroney
Randy Martinez
David Fabbri

An EXCELLENT case breakdown with some gorgeous sketches (despite 3 of the exact same sketch).  I have a different Dalla Vecchia (Witch King) I'd trade :D

ah...my favorite Lurtz! He has found a home!

He has found a foster home :(   My wife is the one that pulled it (she has loved opening this set, and when I showed her what your other Uruk color went for on ebay she suggested we sale it and buy 2 more cases. And she usually doesn't get excited about card sets, so I couldn't fight her on it. I am sure it will find a good home (hopefully permenant).  So it is officially listed on that evil site (  :ebay: )  Free shipping to any yak shak member who wins it. I am trying to sort through the rest with my wife to decide what will acutally become part of my collection, its hard :(

I will have to do some scanning Wed here is the best out of my last case I opened. No GG, Cat or CC in my last case tonight, but I did get a Cat and CC in the one before it so one of each of yours now ladies none of yours YET Grant.  I will make sure I post my sketches of the CC and Cat I pulled Wed.

Ok, so my scanner is on "vacation", so for now descriptions will have to do until I can get scans up, probably tomorrow night..

From on box I got a sketch of an orc, side view, by Paul Gutierrez and a Mary Mitchell of the top of the tower bearing the eye of sauron.
Box two yielded only one sketch, a fantastic image of gandalf holding his staff up, from the scene outside of moria. The artist for this card appears to be Brian Rood. Its gorgous, so Im really not fussed about it being the only card in the box.  ;D

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

I wonder how much longer we will continue to see new sketch cards on ebay?

I think it will start drying up pretty soon, as box and case prices seem to be making a move upward, and you don't see too many of either on ebay.  I just contacted my distributor and he has a few more cases at $38 a box, so I am going to snag them up, as I am having too much fun opening these!!

Here are the top 4 (other than the Galadriel in the last case I opened last night).  Well at least the most interesting I think.

At first I thought oh not a Matt Busch (nothing against him personally, but I have more than enough of his SW heritage sketches as I think he did literally thousands) then I checked the LOTR sketch site and his are very limited in this set and the Frodo is nice.

I really like that Booth Boromir.  If I'm reading the sigs correctly you've also got two Tom Hodges - both of which are VERY cool...

Ooooooooo that was a good case Dave - those are fab sketches!!
I've been trying to get a Busch sketch and failed dismally so if ever you get fed up of looking at that one of Frodo then you know who to contact!! ;) ;D
The Boromir is a beaut too .. in fact I wouldn't have said no to any of them!! ;D

Jackie - good luck with your five boxes and please let us know what you get won't you!? ;D

The Mount Doom one is Frampton I believe ;)

I have really been enjoying reading and talking with you all about the Evolutions set and have had a great time looking at all the great and not so great sketch cards that are out on ebay, shown by you all here, and on the sketch card web site.  I think this is the most enjoyable time I have had of any of the Topps LOTR's sets notwithstanding my bad luck with my boxes.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: beckham1 March 09, 2006, 03:02:07 AM
Yes Peter Frampton I believe :P  I think Topps did a great job of (for the most part) spreading the sketch load around so artists weren't having to pump out 3,000 sketches (that is what Randy Martinenz said he did for SW Heritage according to his website if I recall) which sacrificed quality for sure.

Of course it is hard to argue with the law of averages in this product if you get close to 2 per box you should find a couple you will really like in a case.  The Frodo will need to go to a new shire, maybe in England for a spot of tea Jules.

Way to go, Jackie!  Take out that credit card and start swingin'!   I hope you get some really nice cards from your boxes.  When do you expect them?
The Frodo is awesome, Dave.  ;D

I really need help finding out what artists did what...some of their signatures are definetly not possible to read. Oh yeah, lol, so what does everyone think the odds are on pulling 4 Dalla Veccha sketches and of the 4, 3 of them are Gimli?

The T 05 is Tom Hodges
Apparently I can't read when I'm sleep deprived... it's not a T 05, it's an F 05 which is Otis Frampton...  Sorry!

Thanks All!!   I need to stay out of my GOFU $ stash!!  ::) But the temptation...  >:D UUGG!! ::)

I asked for them to be mailed off TODAY! TODAY! TODAY! (well, not quite like that! But thats what I feel!! )
I was told tomorrow they'll be shipped!!  :'( And by UPS Ground  :P from the east. So my guess is Monday!  *sigh*  :-\

Fine Jackie here are four more, my CC and Cat sketches and the Mary Mitchell Gandalf (which is light but an exact likeness of Sir Ian and a Ray Dillion Gollum - happy for a Dillion but I am not a gollum fan.

The Gandalf is awesome... would have loved to see some background, but its still fantastic regardless :D The Eye of Sauron is quite cool as well :)

I'm sending mind waves

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

I kind of like that it doesnt have the background, and you can still tell the exact moment in the film that its from. the eye is cool too, but I still want a leggy.

The Frodo will need to go to a new shire, maybe in England for a spot of tea Jules.
Sounds good to me Dave - you know where I am (figuratively speaking)!!!  ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think you have to approach this set with an open mind because of the diversity of styles of the sketches done for it.
I've ended up with sketches by artists I hadn't really 'looked' at in the listings, though I knew them from previous cards sets (Star Wars Heritage) and had some idea on what to expect. ;)
If you try and keep your mind open then hopefully you won't be too disappointed with what you get, and I have to agree with Dave on this one - but the sketches DO look HEAPS better in hand than ever they do in the scans.
Some of these sketches really are works of art in miniature and are selling accordingly and I do think it's a bit of a pity that the artists responsible haven't received some of the fantastic sums of money these cards have sold/are selling for. ;)

Kate - that Gandalf is wonderful ... it captures the film moment exactly! ;D
The Mary Mitchell Gandalf looks beautiful too .. so-o-o-o-o-o-o many cards and not enough £/$ to go round them all! :-\ ::)

I really hope everyone else is blessed with some lovely sketches and I think I'll stick to :ebay: if I feel the urge for more sketch cards rather than risk buying any more boxes. I've been very lucky with the two boxes I got and I don't want to stretch that luck any further thanks! :P

I couldn't agree more!  After seeing sketches here and on eBay, I have a good idea of what is available and what I want.  It doesn't make sense for me to buy boxes hoping to pull a particular character's sketch.  Having said that, it's back to eBay I go! ;)

Honestly, I'd have to keep it.  It's a fantastic sketch - one of the best that's out there in my opinion.  If you sold it you'd be able to get a lot for it, but you'd NEVER be able to get another like it.  If I recall correctly each Kayanan is one of a kind for this series.  Cat, Grant, is that what you remember reading?

That's just GORGEOUS!

# 17 had the Shum sketch in it

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ferdinand_the_yak March 10, 2006, 05:04:08 AM
Doesn't that mean that the Shum is no longer up for grabs? I have never figured out the rules of that game (we have an Aussie version). You choose suitcases and whatever is in the ones you choose gets eliminated from your potential prize pool?

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: Bryanjs14 March 10, 2006, 05:04:25 AM
ok good, then I will go for......Briefcase 24

It's ok, they make it a little overdramatic for my taste.  Kind of like Who Wants to be A Millionaire.   Regis for the 4th time on the same question "now are you sure that is your final answer?"  Contestant "Yes you *$(#$&%$^# it is."

Is there a new game show?

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: Bryanjs14 March 10, 2006, 05:25:19 AM
yep. It is called Deal or no Deal....it is a little confusing at first...

There are 26 briefcases, inside there are amounts from $0.01 all the way up to $1,000,000.
You pick one of the 26 briefcases and then start eliminating the remaining 25.

As you are doing this, you are taking out different sums that obviously cannot be in your briefcase so they have a "Banker" who sits behind a soundproof window in the shadows and calls the stage at different parts of the game. Depending on what you have knocked out, he will make you an offer to sell him the briefcase you choose and leave now.

So basicly, the more small amounts you knock out, the higher the offer goes. After he makes the offer, you either take the deal or say no deal, and you have to open up a certain number of more briefcases before he will make another offer.

Sound confusing? It is a little....but basicly most people get greedy and keep going and when that happens you just prey they open the case with that $1,000,000 in it

: GrantGoBoom March 10, 2006, 12:00:46 PM
Wow, that Kayanan card is %#%$@&# amazing.  Personally I would keep that thing.  You can always sell it in the future.  Somehow I doubt the value on his stuff will go down much over time.

And, yes, I believe Kayanan only did one-of-a-kind cards.  No doubles for that crazy guy!   ;D

I'm well pleased with my cards from this set.  I got two hobby and one retail box.  The retail I got Gandalf's Shirt.  The first hobby box had only one sketch - a Budd Theoden done in pen.  The second I got two sketches - a Booth Theoden and a really beautiful Walks Arwen.

Now, do I get some more boxes or be happy with what I've got - hmmm.

Gandalf has captured the Moth in his hand... (which goes off to tell the Eagles to come and help ;))

very atmospheric and really the scan doesn't do it justice

another nice Gandy though ...

I wasn't planning to as I've got an Aragorn I like for my Fellowship of nine... and an Arwen sketch that I like separately... mmmm it's not easy - Maybe the Fellowship of 9 wasn't the way to go ::)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: gimli March 11, 2006, 11:03:20 AM
I thought it might be interesting to see how my case broke, within the groupings of artists topps gave

so here goes

Group A x 7
Group B x 0
Group C x 2
Group D x 3
Group E x 2
Group F x 0

at the stated odds in a case you may have expected

Group A x 6
Group B x 0/1 (50 50 chance)
Group C x 2/3
Group D x 1/2
Group E x 2
Group F x 0/1

so actually i think my case was quite close to an even spread to the odds

I have had an itching to open my boxes that I ordered, which probably won't be here until Monday or Tuesday. So I decided to call around to some shops to see if I could find some boxes!! HAH! What a joke!! I don't think Denver is big on non-sports cards!! I call to about 10 shops and only found about 9 boxes, of course only 1 or 2 at each shop!  ::) I live about 1.5 hour from Denver. Most of the shops had average prices for a box. One place quoted me $55/box!  :o Anyway, I figured it wouldn't be worth me venturing out gathering up boxes when I own a vehicle with a 454 under the hood!  ::) So I gave up! As it turns out, I had to run to Boulder last night. Passed a comic/card shop and decided to stop. They only had one opened box, but hadn't sold any yet! So i bought it! (Was $48 and was given 10% off because it wasn't sealed  ;D )
This is what I pulled!! I am very happy!!  ;D

Congrats Jackie sometimes it only takes that one box or so.  That is the great thing about collecting you really don't have to buy cases to get a good card, and sometimes you don't get the greatest card.   Just need a little luck on your side!

OK people we need to see some more scans and pics!  I know some of you are holding out (:D#  If you want to ship them to me I will scan them for you, and return all of the ones I don't need or like. >:D

Very nice!  It's hard to pick a favorite, you have a lot of good ones.  Since I'm stuck on Gollum sketches I guess my favorite would be Cynthias Gollum in the first set.  I love the way she did his hand reaching out!  8)

Is everyone buying Hobby only and no Retail?

I got six boxes of retail.  I pulled a Gandalf's Cloak, a Galandriel, 2x Merry, Pippen and a Frodo Travel Cloak.  I'm also expecting a case of hobby either tomorrow or Tuesday.

Congrats on your retail pulls Anna - so that leaves you with the Gandalf Shirt and the Arwen Nightdress to complete your set I believe? ;)

Actually I only need Arwen's Nightgown because I found a great priced BIN for a Gandalf's Shirt. ;D

It is a small world... I met someone I was at University with when I was in Egypt... and they come from Ghana so they "shouldn't" have been there at all

Well done anna - that's a complete steal ;D

Gorgeous Walks card Kathy!

I edited your post so the pics would show up in the thread. All you have to do is to use the image/picture button (the one with the little picture frame) and post the link between the two thingys (sorry... the name escapes me ;) )

Yeah probably should have looked it up on LOTR sketch site :-[

Anywho I wonder how many he did as it doesn't state a number of sketches for him, although likely not a lot as he is a level F artist.  This is the first one I have seen of his and I must say I think it is fantastic.

Ooh that's interesting... I don't remember seeing the Mouth of Sauron without his mask on in the movie (and the gross teeth too) - any idea whether that is in the movie? I can't remember it from the Extended edition either - do I need to watch it again?

Don;t know.. the reference could be titled wrong. I have not gone back through and searched for it, but it did pass approval.. I got the image from Arwen=Undomiel (http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/gallery.html) In the other characters category.

OOOOOOOOOOOooooooo the Witchking sketch is EXC-E-L-L-ENT!!! *gimme gimme gimme* ;)
Is it done by Tom Hodges or have I completely mis-read the sig on the bottom of the card?
I love Arwen with Hadhafang too - very unusual and detailed without being OTT ... a prime contender for hand-colouring by the original artist if ever I saw it! ;)

Yep - definitely four good boxes there Chris! ;D

Just cracked another case, not too bad, I will just post a few of my favorites to save on space.  Really like the Aragorn, can't tell if that is a sword or an arrow, maybe miss cat can shed some light on that. :)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork March 15, 2006, 09:06:48 AM
Well my parents just called me with their case break (they arene't really good with a scanner, but they pulled this card:

So I decided to crack another case, as we got these two cases from the same place and they had the same number on the side (and the same number as my other Kayanan case) and here is what it yielded:  ( I like to call it the Dan Parsons case :) and the other card :)

If anyone needs me to rub there cases for them, I feel like my magic is running hot!!, as I complete the ritual before any big release!!!  :)  (for any Artemis fans)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: beckham1 March 15, 2006, 09:30:32 AM
Great pulls Zach and your parent Gandy is awesome.  Are you keeping or selling the Kayanan's?  If your the go up on ebay make sure you put a link in!

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork March 15, 2006, 09:32:55 AM
Unfortunetly my wife pulled the Kayanan, and as mentioned earlier, she knows what color means, and she knows what Kayanan means, and she absolutely loves opening these cases now, so my Kayanan will go, and my parents will probably list theres as well. Selling the Kayanan will allow the Aragorn Staggs to possibly find its home with me :)

Finally got one of Allison's sketches and one of Cynthia's that wasn't an orc or Urak Hai (sp?) ;D  I think the sketch of the Ringwraith and the hobbits under the tree is really cute and funny.

Dave:

I really do love that Aragorn sketch!   :)   The sketch card of the child below CC's Sam is one of Peter Jackson's children who was in the Lord of the Rings movies!   :)

Zach:

It looks to me in your Aragorn sketch that he is pulling back an arrow.  What a beauty Kayanan your parents pulled and that Balrog is way cool!   :)

I might have to visit you two gentlemen and camp out on your front steps concerning the Aragorn cards you both pulled!!   ;)

well i think that is the highest sketch pull from a case you must have had 2 in every box and 1 with 3 to get 19

and two great Cat Staggs sketches there I have yet to pull one

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: beckham1 March 16, 2006, 11:35:30 AM
Yes I would say that was a great case.  If you are looking to get rid of that Arwen let me know ;)  Certainly more than your fair share of low level sketches, but you did well pulling 5-6 more than an average case.  I opened a case that had two boxes with 3 sketches each I thought I was heading for a crapload of sketches, but was equalized with the dreaded 4 boxes with only 1 sketch.  So an average number of sketches.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: Goofyjas March 16, 2006, 11:37:11 AM
yea I pretty much did get 2 per box that I could remmeber.. some of them I duno who the artist is some I can tell.. the cat cards are cool ( also the gollum next to them) but.. not the super cool one I wanted :P

ya PM me if you are intereste din any of them :P
some you cant see unless you click the links I guess, beats me I am super tired

I wish I got a cynthia sketch I wanted, the gandalf with the pipe smoke? :( had a few favs when I saw them all but I got some ok ones but nothing that I was looking for.

Come to think of it I do think they came in the same case, 2 packs from eachother

: Anna March 17, 2006, 02:20:02 AM
I opened my remaining boxes and here's what I pulled - no Kayanans, Cummens, Staggs, Sohns or Goulds. :(  Overall I did pull a lot of nice sketches, but I didn't get the sketches of very many Fellowship characters, and that's what I was hoping to have in my collection. :-\  I still have 2 more boxes coming so maybe I'll get some from them. :o=

Anna - I like that particular caricature of Ian Holm/Bilbo.  Just a few simple lines for his features, but it really says alot. Plus the Norton is really quite flowing and beautiful!

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

The Norton & Myler are both EXCELLENT!  Like the rest too!

Every one of those are really nice sketchs!  I hope you get one of your favorites in your next couple of boxes.

Nice one Zack - is the Buyer anyone we know? ::)

It was ebay user name jdcarlson from the UK.

As you all know by now I have a problem with self control when it comes to this.  I just cracked another case, I really liked both Dillon sketches (even though the wraith is not signed :(

Nice pulls Zach!   :)   How is your hunt going for the cards you want to keep for your Fellowship?    I am not familiar with the Buyer who purchased your Kayanan and I don't know if anyone here on The Shack is either?  Do you still have more boxes to open?

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork March 17, 2006, 08:41:50 AM
Nice pulls Zach!   :)     Do you still have more boxes to open?

Does this answer your question?  We opened one more box out of one of my other cases right before my wife had to go to work, she is good luck ;)

I wonder if you could just email Dillon to see if he would sign the card for you if you sent it to him.  I wouldn't see why not.

: beckham1 March 17, 2006, 10:49:52 AM
Wow, your luck continues and certainly there are some other nice sketches too I really like that color Dillon.  I would have to say the market has seemed to cool a little.  I think most of the big spenders for sketches might have to reload their wallets.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

what are the #s on those cases!

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork March 17, 2006, 08:23:04 PM
All the Kayanan cases have had the numbers

4 8 15 16 23 42

;)

Actually I have pulled 2 Kayanans out of 22047 and 2 out of 22046, but I have opened a case that was a 22046 that didnt have a Kayanan, but I feel that it definetly increases you chances, maybe those cases have a higher concentration of "E" level scketch cards.  I have got all those cases from the same place as well, and I have another sealed case beside me that has 22046 that I will be taking over to my parents house today, so hopefully by tonight I have another Kayanan sketch to post, but at the minimum I will have something good to post, and my wife will be home from her 12 hour night shift pretty soon (I know, I'm a slave driver :) )  and we will open the rest of this case, so I will post more, I am hoping to one up Goofyjas with a 2 Kayanan case ;)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork March 17, 2006, 10:25:51 PM
Just finished the case, not a bad finish, but when you start with a Kayanan its hard to top it, the second staggs Eowyn is really nice though (as is pulling any staggs) and I really like the Chandler witch king.

Definite "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" factor x 10 with those selections!!! ;D ;D ;D

I think it's wonderful to see other Forum members pulling such fantastic cards from their cases after the disappointments some of them have had with other card releases and I only hope the run of good luck extends beyond Evolution to the next big release which is GOFu! :o= :o= :o=

Chris ... the Staggs Saruman from Case 1 is fantastic - my fave out of all of those you've posted.
Are you allowing yourself to keep any of them (if so, which ones?) or will you list them?

Jas - I think my fave out of this case of yours is the Booth Aragorn - it looks as though there's some fine pencil work on it and I think it's an unusual view of him.

Zac - the Myler Frodo would be the one I'd go after - a very stylised sketch of my fave hairy-footed-hero and I love it!
Fingers crossed you have some more great cards to show us later on and I'm sure your wife will have the magic touch and pull something which will make us all green with envy! ::)

Another case, another Kayanan :)  I think this is one of my favorite ones, it is so bright!!!  Plus I had one pack in a box that had 16 cards in it (13 of which were level B cards, crazy....13 sketches would have been cooler though)

Just got $1000 out of the most recent Kayanan, maybe I am putting the 'but it now' too low on some of the great looking ones, but I am not complaining, in fact I am excited.  More cases, must open more cases!!

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: beckham1 March 21, 2006, 12:36:43 PM
I am not suprised, I would be happy with $1000 many Kayanan's are going for well below the prices they were fetching a week or so ago.  I think a lot of the big spenders have to refill there wallets right now.

I was thinking about making you an offer of $500 but I didn't think you would feel sorry enough for me to accept the offer ::)  You must post the sketches you have decided to keep, it can't be an easy choice with all the great ones you are pulling.  Hope you at least keep one of these nice Kayanans for your personal collection.  I think you can justify it with your wife with how well you have done selling your other ones.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

Gee Zach - I wish you lived near me so I could have you rub my boxes before I opened them - I and now Dave need some of your outstanding luck!!  Love that Kayanan!  Is it becoming harder for you to find cases to purchase or not really?

Another case, another Kayanan :)

How wonderful that you can be so cavalier about your pulls.  The problem with posts like this is that it appears to be easy to pull Kayanans and other great cards.  The truth is that it's quite difficult to find them.  There are many people who purchased a case or multiple cases and didn't pull even a colored sketch, let alone one drawn by a highly-sought-after artist.

Besides, there's no need to brag.  The sketches speak for themselves.

Yah *sniff* *sniff* I bought a case plus - where's my Kayanan

(she says tongue in cheek, having gone into this purchase knowing full-well I'd never pull one)

But, all in all, I am very glad for those who have pulled them - it IS exciting and  I know if I had the luck and pulled one, there'd be no stopping my joyful expressions (ie, bragging) :)

Ooh those are 4 stunners, is that a Zapata Frodo? Let me know if you decide not to keep him and maybe we can sort something out.

I also love Moore's Gandy and Cart (although you already have rather a nice Gandy and cart I believe ), the Walks is a stunner and the Staggs a cracker.

Well done!

Wow those are great thanks for sharing.  I saw the Wilkinson Arwen on ebay and was wondering about that mark on her forehead, was there a small hole in the card or was that part of the sketch?  I really like the Walks Gandalf and the Merry with drinking cup by CC.  The Gandalfs by Cat and Allison and the King of the Dead by Grant (I would get that one colored in if you still have it) the Leggy by Norton and the treebeard by Frampton.  Of course there are also about 13-20 more I really like too.  Overall I would say some pretty nice cases.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: bush360 March 25, 2006, 05:28:50 AM
The Wilkinson Arwen was very sweet, I noticed the mark when I scanned the card is was a mark on the scanner glass I tried to change the picture but the item already had bids and I didnt think adding to the description would help as most people might have thought this quite dubious. It sold for more than I expected though so was pretty pleased I really wanted a Kayanan though and untill I pull one I wont be stopping opening the cases.   ;)

Hi Savage, in general I would call myself a dealer in non sports but a collector of American Sports cards I have kept 3 of the LOTR sketches and as you noticed have sold the rest I collected the lost set to get the master set as I love the TV show.

Seeing them en masse gives everyone a better idea of the variety of artistic styles for this set - how many more boxes/case have you left to crack open Dave?
You have some super cards in those last batches .... and you're right, the full-colour Frodo has to be my all-time fave out of all that I've seen! :-*
*wanders off wondering if Dave would notice me coming over to his place and purloining said card* >:D ;)

Hi Bush360:

Hi Savage I have kept the Jake Myler Frodo the Gandalf by Cat and a Gollum by teranishi they were my favorite characters in the films so to have one sketch of each was cool.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ocdlotr March 27, 2006, 02:17:18 AM
1. So...there are some 19,200 sketch cards out there if you add up the #'s on the LOTR Sketch card site...
2. If these cards are seeded 1 sketch card in every 14 packs, then there would have to be about 268,800 packs (14x19,200)
to cover that 1 in 14 ratio...
3. There are 24 packs in every box...so there are 11,200 boxes floating around Middle Earth...(268,800/24)...
4. With 8 boxes a case, 1400 preciousssssssss cases are filled with these sketch cards...
5. Rafael Kayanan created 250 sketch cards...that means...on average...there should be 1 Kayanan every 5.5 cases...
Dave Dorman, Scott Erwert, and William O'Neill also made
250 pieces...so the same odds apply...1 in every 5.5 cases
6. Cat Staggs, Amy Pronovost, Dan Parsons, Robert Teranishi, Brian Rood and Jake Myler...in the 500 cards range...so twice as frequently...or 1 in every 2.8 boxes...
7. The 1000+ contributors...Fabbri, Frampton, Gutierrez, Hodges, Hodgkins, Martinez, Shum, Vecchia and Woodside...1 every 1.4 boxes...and that's why you get at least one of every one of these artists in each case!...or more!
8. Under 250...do the Math... thus the very high prices for the very rare sketch card artists! Those artists include...Matt Busch, Joe Corroney, Jan Duursema, Mike Lilly, Rich Molinelli, and Monte Moore.
9. The rarest of the rare...those artists with only 100 sketch cards + the 6 returned by Topps to give them a total of 106 cards...those odds are 1 in every 13.2 cases and include the artists...Ryan Benjamin, Chris Eliopoulos, and Jeff Zapata.
Gabriel Hernandez and Mary Mitchell have no numbers posted as of yet...but judging by what's out there, they also must be in the 106-150 range.
10. So...here are the odds for each artist (IF 1400 CASES EXIST)
Ryan Benjamin - 1 in 13.2 cases
Joseph Booth - 1 in 3.92 cases
Dennis Budd - 1 in 6.8 cases
Matt Busch - 1 in 8.97 cases
Jeff Chandler - 1 in 4.66 cases
Justin Chang - 1 in 10.77 cases
Joe Corroney - 1 in 8.97 cases
Cynthia Cummens - 1 in 3.93 cases
Renae DeLiz - 1 in 6.8 cases
Ray Dillon - 1 in 4.57 cases
Dave Dorman - 1 in 5.47
Michael Duron - 1 in 6.8 cases
Jan Duursema - 1 in 8.97 cases
Chris Eliopoulos - 1 in 13.2 cases
Scott Erwert - 1 in 5.47 cases
Davide Fabbri - 1 in 1.39 cases
Otis Frampton - 1 in 1.39 cases
Grant Gould - 1 in 6.8 cases
Paul Gutierrez - 1 in 1.39 cases
Gabriel Hernandez - ??? if 106 then 1 in 13.2 case...?
Thomas Hodges - 1 in 1.39 cases
James Hodgkins - 1 in 1.39 cases
Rafael Kayanan - 1 in 5.47 cases
Mike Lilly - 1 in 8.97 cases
Tom Mandrake - 1 in 2.8 cases
Randy Martinez - 1 in 1.39 cases
John McRae - 1 in 3.45 cases
Mary Mitchell - ???? if 106 the 1 in every 13.2 cases ?
Rich Molinelli - 1 in 8.97 cases
Monte Moore - 1 in 8.97 cases
Jake Myler - 1 in 2.8 cases
Dan Norton - 1 in 4.56 cases
William O'Neill - 1 in 5.47 cases
Dan Parsons - 1 in 2.8 cases
Amy Pronovost - 1 in 2.8 cases
David Rabbitte - 1 in 6.8 cases
Juan Carlos Ramos - 1 in 6.8 cases
Brian Rood - 1 in 2.8 cases
Howard Shum - 1 in 1.39 cases
Allison Sohn - 1 in 6.8 cases
Cat Staggs - 1 in 2.8 cases
Robert Teranishi - 1 in 2.31 cases
Christian Della Vecchia - 1 in 1.39 cases
Russ Walks - 1 in 6.8 cases
Sarah Wilkinson - 1 in 4.58 cases
Brent Woodside - 1 in 1.39 cases
Jeff Zapata - 1 in 13.2 cases
That's assuming the 1:14 ratio provided by Topps and assuming that Gabriel Hernandez and Mary Mitchell had 106 cards each.
So...this is a 'more or less' breakdown.
QUALITY RULES THOUGH...and the recent prices of Rafael Kayanan and Cat Staggs, as well as others...really set the precendent for future second and third market values. :ebay:

Dang Beckham1.. if you find my Ring it would  really like to come home :o=

Well I think that won't happen as my opening is done at what the prices have been for the last week or two.  Cat I love your ring card!  It was interesting that the Gandalf and the Frodo color were both in the same case.  The box with the Gandalf did not have the Topps security wrap on it, but it was in the middle of the case.  I thought should I send it to Topps for replacement?  Has it been tampered with?  I thought what the heck I might as well open it since it was in the middle and they might not even replace it anyway.  Glad I opened it!

I just got an email from Gabriel Hernandez, and he only did 80 sketch cards, so it looks that possibly he is the rarest artist.  Thought I would pass that along.

Yes, but it was in those heady early days when most sketches by the rarer artists were going for a song... so it was a hard call... and we didn't know how rare it would turn out to be did we?

Interesting selection Dave! ;) :D

Jas - Chris has posted the other half to that Arwen sketch of yours ...
http://www.theyakshack.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3921.new;boardseen#new
How cool would it be if the two sketches were reunited!? ;D

Roz - I knew the Busch sketches were some of the rare ones in this set and I honestly thought £70 was on the steep side to pay for that particular card (you know the one I mean ;)) ... still do as a matter of fact, but you know what it's like when you see something and and it strikes a chord deep down .... :-\
I've also seen some beautiful Frodo sketches done by Rabbitte, Allison and Cat which I know I'll never own - it's still nice to see them and to admire them though *thinking of the full-colour Frodo of Dave's here*
Ah well, you can't own 'em all! :P

I would call that good luck!  You were able to get double of one of the rarest cards in the set.  Also, if you have a varient on your hands there, it certainly was a great find!  Congrats on the pulls!

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: Nienna March 29, 2006, 02:29:47 AM
I have to agree with Mike on this one Graham - that's material from Gandalf's shirt card you have in that Arwen costume card!  :o
... the leaf patterns are woven into the fabric and I think it's very distinctive and really nice - reminds me of woven damask table cloth actually. ;)
You never know, you could get ooooodles of money for that variant - think of what Richard got for those Karkaroff 'variants' a little while ago!! :o ;)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: beckham1 March 29, 2006, 08:34:08 AM
I am trying to go back and figure out which sketches I didn't post scans of as everyone seems to be about done posting sketches.  I must say I had great luck with Kayanans compared to some, but overall considering I opened 16 cases of Evo :-[  I seemed to have just come out at about expected odds.  My 3 Kayanans were in about the first 5 cases so I had no Kayanans in the last 11 cases I opened, but plenty of other fabulous sketches.  I need to start selling a few to pay that bill

I don't think I posted this one.

That's what I thought at first Mike but we have a Gandalfs shirt and the material is plain weave - as Jules pointed out the Arwen has leaf patterns in it.  But everyone knows my views on error cards like this (if it is an error) PASS THEM ALL MY WAY

Hi. New here to this site. Just found it looking for, oddly enough, more boxes of evolution. so far, i was only able to open one case, but it was a very good case! i have 2 boxes on the way, and unless i find a steal thats gonna be it :-(. Heres what i pulled. it was actually sorta neat, my Girlfriend and i sat in our apartment when the case came, and we opened up the packs from the back one at a time, when we saw the congratulations, we set it aside and kept opening the boxes. it was fun. when we finished a box, she would (lol) kiss the back of the pack for luck and we would flip it onto the table (only 1.5 inches and it had a cloth covering so nothing could happen to em). It was actually cooler to just open em up with her then to pull the sketchs...but the sketchs were close LOL. here are the best pulls from the case. We decided to keep the more common sketchs and part with the expensive ones. I think we did gang busters! i liked the color eye of sauron myself the best, but she was into the Staggs and the Wilkinson Galadriel (have you ever seen a better one? i havent. its actually really oddly beautiful to look it just on its own).

HUZZAH!!!!! also liked getting a russel walks. what was odd , was the wilkinson came in the same box as the OTHER wilkinson...that should be sorta impossible, lol.

At this weekend's Philly Show, my husband bought two boxes - one for me and one he kept. We each got 2 sketches in the box. I pulled a very nice McCrea and Hodges, he pulled a Rood and KAYANAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was so embarrassed, me being the sketchqueen and all :) But I was so happy I didn't care who pulled it, cause now it's all mine. We also bought 4 more sketches at the show - an O'Neill, a Mitchell, a Provonost and a Dillon. Here is the link :

Hey Sketchqueen...I just heard about the Philly show...damn I should have went...what were they charging for Hobby boxes...did a lot of dealers still have them?  Congrats on the Kayanan...that's a tough pull when you only buy 2 boxes...odds are like 1 Kayanan in 5 or 6 cases!  Whew!  How were the prices for sketch cards at this convention compared to Ebay?  And was there a big selection?

Sorry, I'm a bit OCD about this and can't believe I missed something like this so relatively close to home (NYC)...enjoy your posts! :o

No, my name is not sketchqueen ;D, but I bought two boxes of these at the philly show for $60 each.  Most dealers did not have them. I only saw two, as a matter of fact. I pulled a gorgeous Cummens Galadriel sketch from mine, of which eventually I'll post a photo ;)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: sketchqueen April 04, 2006, 12:18:02 AM
Boxes were $60 and up, but there weren't many. Only 3 dealers had sketches - one had so-so quality, one had really nice and really expensive cards (I only picked up one from him - the Provonost) and the other dealer had a nice mixture - all sorts of quality and all sorts of prices so I picked up three from him :)

And about Kayanan coming to NH? I'm not sure, I'll listen again, but I think he said "I love this house, can I stay here FOREVER!!!: upon entering *my* house *lol*

Nice pulls, Joanna!!!  8) Looks like you and your husband have that lucky touch, also!!!  :)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: sketchqueen April 04, 2006, 05:37:23 AM
I never get the good pulls *lol* which is why we instituted the house rule of "Joanna opens ALL the boxes until she gets the card she wants, then the rest of the family can open". The only luck I ever had was winning his heart :)

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to let you know I've listed another one of my blank cards on Ebay. This time, it's buyers choice! You pick the character you want me to draw:) This will probably be the only one of the 6 that I auction this way.

It's a 3 day auction. Here's the link:

There were a few cards that I felt were sub-par. Those were the ones I asked for back. I think it was a Pippin.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: zhamlau April 05, 2006, 10:36:06 AM
well, broke 2 more cases. pulled 29 sketchs, a LOT of repeats and artists who i had 3-4 from already (sigh). lets just say, i can make sets of anyone who did 1000 sketchs, how many ya need? lol. oddly though, one of thoes artists, hodges, ended up being one of the best pulls (you will see). here are the 8 best. i also had a budd sketch, and a few other nice short prints and parsons sketchs, but these 8 are the ones I like the best

whats neat, is the hodges is actually painted. It literally has to be his single best overall sketch, and thats cool to have. i have also pulled ( i think anyway) another artists best sketch, from sarah wilkinson, the galadriel sketch. The chandler balrog fighting gandalf is great too.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ferdinand_the_yak April 05, 2006, 12:23:38 PM
If you are talking about the 2nd sketch on the first row, I think its Arwen and not Galadriel. The pencil detail looks more like a Mitchell than Wilkinson, although I could be very wrong of course ;)

Beautiful sketches all round - congrats! :D

: Nienna April 05, 2006, 02:17:30 PM
You're right Jo, if you look closely you can see Mary Mitchell's sig at the bottom left of the card and I agree on it being of Arwen too. ;)
Beautiful selection of cards again - Congrats! ;D ;D ;D

I'm liking Jeffs sketches more and more.  You got a couple of nice ones!  Also the Staggs sketch is really nice.  I don't think Faramir's are very common on these sketch cards.  At least I haven't seen very many of them.  ;D

Welcome to The Yak Shack Rich!   :)   It's great to have another Evolution Artist on the board!   :)   Who is your favorite LOTR's character and what were your favorite sketch cards you created?

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

I have to say Arwin and my favorite card I created was the silhouette of Golem after getting the ring back.  :)

Looks like a child got hold of the card and used Crayons to color the picture. Decided since it only had sentimental value, to auction it. :'(

The bottom right looks to be "Mike D" - Michael Duron.  I really like that style... too bad with only 200 out there I can't collect more of them without needing to sell an organ :D

I have seriously overspent on these...  Of course my budget for them wasn't big enough to begin with...  I think after all is said and done I will have spent 1,5 - 2 K on all of these in cash and trade... I'm scared to add it up and I'm pretty broke for the rest of the year with card sets...

SW Evolution II is very scary too. I'm a big fan of the first Evolution set and I have all 25 autos but I have no idea how to fund the release in July. I think Topps' timing could not have been worse. And there are also rumours about a LOTR evolution update. (is this true or just rumours?) I think there will be 4 sketches per box because nobody can afford the boxes/cases for this edition.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: sketchqueen April 11, 2006, 03:28:41 AM
"How many of you are still within budget?"

I am, I most proudly say. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I still have a little change leftover. See, I've been *very* good this time around - I've not gone eBay crazy although it took some serious fiduciary responsibility to my family for me to avoid the Bay. Tempered by the fact that I don't love every sketch I've seen and some that I do love are on the cheaper side, it's been good so far :) Now .. about that update set? Who's got the scoop on that!?!? Spill the beans please...

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: tialessa April 11, 2006, 03:49:24 AM

Well since I haven't heard a peep, I'm guessing that A) it's a secret at the moment & no one can say anything, B) it's a rumor, or C) it's a plot to get me VERY deep in debt...

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ocdlotr April 11, 2006, 04:54:10 AM
When I went searching for a box or two to open for something called OPEN THAT BOX DAY which was Saturday the 8th (Non Spots Cards Update)...the dealer I dealt with (who sold me a few boxes at the stunning price of $40 a box!) told me HIS DISTRIBUTOR wanted to know if he wanted to order cases for the UPDATE...so I think there's definately going to be an UPDATE set...

...he said the distributor wasn't sure if more sketch cards or even a few Costume cards might be included...maybe the long lost GIMLI...

...as for my budget... :o :'( :o=...
I am seriously OUT OF CONTROL OCD!!!   ...but...every year, on my relatively low salary I put aside some $$$ for Art...photography, drawings, etchings by some contemporary artists here and there...well, once I found out that SKETCH CARDS were being included in the EVOLUTION set, I figured the $$$ going for Art, would still go for Art...the LOTR Sketch Cards!...
...I have added up the case + the boxes + the Ebay disease and...whew!

But...it's only money...would you rather have the money, or feed this burning visual desire...
I'll take the passion!  "Follow your bliss."...Joseph Campbell

Gotta go check out  :ebay:

Wow Jackie two Kayanans in how many boxes?  6 or 7, just shows that quantity doesn't always make a difference.  I think I like the Monte the most though.  It sounds weird to say, but not my favorite of kayanans, but that probably has more to do with the character than anything else.

Gandalf/Balrog? Isn't it the Nazgul at the Prancing Pony? I've seen the Gandalf Balrog one and it's a lot more... Gandalfy, and Balroggy and Orangey ;)

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ztaylork April 12, 2006, 07:34:36 AM
I think it is a nazgul at the prancing pony stabbing the beds.  At first I couldn't figure it out, but while I was scanning it I noticed the feathers and it hit me, as my mind was freaking out trying to figure out what a nazgul stabbed in the movie like that.

Oooops - my bad ;) I've not had my cup of tea this morning (had to settle for coffee and a giant muffin instead). I couldn't remember anything else being stabbed like that except the Balrog - maybe they were falling through a darker part of the abyss and the Balrog has his searchlights turned off?

Sorry :-[

You are of course right Roz :D

Jackie, is that a Chris Eliopoulos sketch at the bottom of your post?  I know it's not the best of the bunch, but I think he only did about 100 cards.  I think the Budd is rare too, but I'm not sure.  You got the best Hodgkins Gandalf.  I haven't seen one of his that looked better.

Does anyone else think that Fabbri's sketches are really good?  I mean, he did about 1000 of them and they all look really nice.  They have a lot have white details too.

Hi, everyone!  DANG you guys have been pulling some awesome cards.    :)

Sorry I haven't been posting much lately -- I've had to cut down on my "internet play time" because I've had a mountain of commissions and personal card orders to catch up on.  I had to put a halt on taking new orders, but once things slow down a little I'll start up again.  Just keep an eye on my site (http://grantgould.com) and I'll announce when that happens.

Oh, and if someone would please sell me a kick butt Kayanan card for under $200, that would be much appreciated.  LOL

That's exactly the type of couch I pictured him on, but I think Gollum's pose is much more... alluring.

OK, now this is officially WRONG

I don't have it hanging in my house, that wasn't good enough.  I have it painted on the main wall in my living room.  :)   (j/k) And now I will have to have a similar painting of Gollum to match it.

Now that is unusual to see 2 Witch King sketch cards by Allison Sohn being pulled in your 5 boxes Zach.  They are cool looking!   8)

well, opened another case today. I got 4 artists i had NOT pulled yet. check it out. 2nd pack, got the justin chung , knew it was gonna be a good case :-). I was super happy to also pull my 2nd Saurmon sketch , and first from one of the really good artists, nice color highlighted Cummens one, really crazy looking. Liked the Boromir Parsons sketch too. only my 2nd parsons overall. Sorta also shocked me, when i got the rood. I swear, it LOOKS like a walks! I almost think it is, lol. at least, its the single nicest Rood ive seen. ALso finally got a dorman. I sorta expected more from dorman. he only did 250 sketchs. but, for the most part they arent as good as his can do, even in pencil. Good case overall. WHat was the MOST fun, was the VERY LAST PACK OPENED, had the alison sohn! FIRST ONE I GOT OF HER!!! WOOT! Whats more, i KNOW IVE SEEN that sohn sketch somewhere before. was it used for some sort of promo or ad? take a look, let me know. Another great case!

I've seen that Sohn sketch somewhere before too.  Not just on the sketch site, but I can't remember where.  That Saruman is AMAZING!  The EYES!  :o  All of those are really good.  8)

Looks similar to this beautiful Sohn I picked up early on on Ebay...just a classic iconic pose for Galdriel...a moment for her character that has been done by a few of the sketch artists and may be on a LOTR Trading card or two...?

: zhamlau May 03, 2006, 11:28:53 AM
no, ive seen that before on the marleyeds website. the ads i thought i saw it in, also had a gollum body sketch, with mountains in the background, and a Pippen reclining ridding treebeard (or frodo reclining on the tree in the shire, cant remember which). lol, its just so hard when the brain goes. i cant find this ad now.

I received my 2 boxes today:

Box 1: Corroney Gandalf, Fabbri Denethor

Box 2: O'Neill Gandalf, Hodgkins Arwen

A very Gandalf-y delivery! I am most impressed with the 2 Gandys - I will post pics up soon :)

Hi Jo:

I am glad your boxes finally arrived and that you at least received 2 sketch cards per box!  Believe me you did very well with your pulls - it could have been so much worse!  I like your Gandalf's too and the Denethor has an interesting expression.  I have almost the same card of Arwen by Hodkins like about 50 other people at least.   :P   Now you have joined our club!  At least you did not get one of the Uruk Helmet's like me!

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns
: ferdinand_the_yak May 04, 2006, 06:13:38 PM
I pulled the Corroney out of the first pack I opened, and I thought that it would be it, fortunately I did have 2 per box which was great :)

And yes, I was relieved that I did not join you esteemed Uruk-Hai helmet club ;)

Gee Zack you could have bought a house for all the money you are spending on Evo!!  Man what do you do - have a printing press in your basement pumping out cash on a daily basis?   :P   It's like you have a crack cocaine addiction or something.   ???

I think its worse that any addiction :)  But I really don't have a problem, I could quit at any time  ;D

Here is a page with all 9 Kayanan's that I have pulled.  The only reason I have been able to pull 9 Kayanan's is that I have sold 9 Kayanan's.  So at present I own zero Kayanan's (but a lot of other cool sketches :)

Love them all...but how could you part with...
#1...that scalding deliriously HOT Balrog...just beautiful!  :o
and...
#2...in the completely opposite direction...the soothing cool earth greens of  Gandalf the Grey is so quintessentially FOTR...serene and comforting... :o=

Wow you must live right or have the luck of the Irish to pull 2 sketch cards from 6 packs left in the box!!   :)  The bottom of both your sketch cards does not show up on your post so I can't see who the Artist's are.  It looks like Randy Martinez for Sam on the left and is that a Cat Staggs on the right?  It looks like Aragorn but with what looks like an arrow impacting the chest area it must be Boromir getting nailed by Lurtz!   :P

picked up my final case today in trade, decided to open it with my girlfriend like we have done on all the others before it. Case was turning out ok, not great going into that last box. Had a nice mitchell, a very good Moore Gandalf. Even cards like the provonost were colored and true 1/1's (even had a very good brent woodside gandalf, like its finished with a background, the best woodside ive ever seen actually). Then, going into the last box, i had a miracle series of pulls in one box. 3 sketchs, each one a case maker in the last box. I got a fully painted Urak Hai Tom hodges Sketch (after all the stuff i said about these helmet sketchs, i guess if you pull the best one, thats something neat). Then, i pulled an amazing allison sohn witch king, with sword ready to strike! WOOT. that made my case, i was now happy as a clam. Literally, on my last pack, we open it from the back, and i see the congratulations. My GF and i flipped it over, and BOOM FULLY PAINTED PACK PULLED CAT STAGGS KING OF THE DEAD SKETCH!!! WOOT!!!!! best case i ever opened , and the best box too. talk about saving the best for last. (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f41/Zhamlau/Sketchs/NewCaseLOTRLow-1.jpg)

To top it off, one of the boxes ( i think it was the last one too actually) had a major misprint card. its foil on one side, and blank on the other! LOL. talk about a neat box in a good case.

A warning to those of you bidding on the sketch auctions of seller "angels4eva" I've noticed that bidder "iamchristos" is new and has ONLY bid on auctions from this seller. Both IDs are registered in Australia. This is a tell-tale sign of a "shill bid" Don't allow your bid to be increased this way and if you are the second highest bidder after the auction has ended, I guarantee a Second Chance Offer.

: Re: The Evolution set: pictures, box/case breakdowns

Both IDs should be reported to eBay Australia.

no no...I was referring to the beautiful Kayanan pulled

Of course I do not support shilling lol...as a matter of fact, I just tried winning a large sports card auction and was outbid by a person who registered the day before it ended...hmm...sounds fishy so I reported it to Ebay the second the auction was over

CORRECTION: After going back I see it is actually ZTaylork who pulled they Kayanan...so sorry Eve for calling you a meanie...it is Ztaylork I should be directing my glares to  >:D

well, had some fun luck today. went and got some loose packs at a shop that sells mostly sports cards and comic books, just some odds and ends they had cheap like 20 bucks total. Got lucky and pulled a jimmy olsen autograph from superman returns, and then out of the 4 packs of Evolution they had still, pulled a Sam Level B parallel, a legolas crystal card, and a sketch level D DENNIS BUDD of BOROMIR YAY! short print out of 200 as well!

would this really make a good aftermarket you think? I wasnt sure. its only 85 dollars to have one made as well, might be money well spent actually. Was thinking of trading it, but the idea of seeing this in color now is growing on me. This really might be a super AM card.

I would do it!  Budd's cards are so hard to come by and that's a really good pose of Boromir.  I think he uses oils, right Jackie?

Ya, he uses oils, and they are seriously amazing cards when they are finished up.  I have about 20 of his evolution cards, and trying to decide which ones to get colored up (already have 4 colored up).  You have to be prepared for a long wait though, as I have been on his list to get more colored up since July of last year, and he said I am still probably out a few months.  So get on the list now, and wait it out....its worth it :)    And if you get sick of the wait, just shoot the card my way, I can always add another Budd to my collection. :)

haha, i just emailed him, wow it would take a while. ill get on the list, and see if i can be patient enough to wait.  The price was right at 85 dollars to to commision. I mean, even from a worth sense alone considering what AM have sold for of his, its a good move. Its just the wait is so long lol. i mean, 6-7 months wait is what im thinking it might be. No idea. Ill probably just trade it, im not a super patient man when it comes to found sketchs that i dont need for collections.

Ill probably just trade it,

Well, if you decide to trade it, you know where I am :)   And yes, I would think 6-7 months would be the minimum, as I have been waiting that long, and I got on the list before a huge bunch of people :)

I've only been able to get one Budd AfterMarketed...a cool blue Gollum...but it was worth every minute I had to wait for it!...considering having a Balrog and a cool Saruman with staff done...but, I love it just the way they are now!

When you hold that finished Budd in your hands, and smell that oil paint...it's like walking into a mini-museum or gallery...! ;D
