I hope everyone here, religious or not, is planning on having pancakes tomorrow (Tuesday)  ;D

Im out tomorrow night, so Im having mine a day early  ::)

What is everyones favourite topping? I love lemon and sugar on thinner pancakes, rolled up (ie crepes), but even jam is nice...

Yeah - this time last year we had some friends from California over.. and introduced them to lemon and sugar and butter (only a tiny bit ;)) topping on french crepe pancakes... lol they have rung to check they have all the right ingredients to repeat it for their Shrove Tuesday fest tomorrow ;D

I'm totally out of flour so I'll have to go shopping tonight *yeeps*

Is anyone giving anything up for lent here? I know a lot of people just give things up for lent for non-religious reasons so it's a fair question...

Id like to give up chocolate for lent, but I just cant do it...though I do make sure not to eat any easter eggs until easter (or really the Thursday before easter; its the last day of uni before the long weekend so we tend to eat a few)...

Ha, that was a good one Jackie, I was thinking hhhmm I should give up buying any cards on ebay for Lent.  What is pancake day?  Is it Lent related I am not Catholic, but I think I understand the basic premise of Lent.  Not a huge pancake eater myself, heck if I have a bowl of cereal that is good, I am terrible not eating breakfast 90% of the time.

The principle goes that you aren't supposed to eat too much during lent. Nothing fancy or rich. So you use up the last of your fancy things in the house to make pancakes. It's really called Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Carnival.

I'm not Catholic though - no transubstantiation for me. Just plain ol' Anglican.

Here's what I use for my pancakes

110g/4oz plain flour, sifted, pinch of salt, 2 eggs, 200ml/7fl oz milk , 50g/2oz

and a nut of butter


But a friend just emailed me these - should I give them a go or stick 'to the knitting'?


Alternative Recipes

Rosemary & Chilli Pancake with Tomato & Mozzarella (savoury)

175 plain flour, pinch salt, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary, half

teaspoon finely chopped deseeded fresh chilli, 300ml milk , 3 tablespoons extra

virgin olive oil, 3 plum tomatoes , 1 buffalo mozzarella , 4 basil leaves



Coconut pancake with Bananas, strawberries & chocolate sauce (sweet)

1 tin coconut milk, 175g plain flour, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 bananas, 6

strawberries , 1 lemon, 50g dark chocolate, 25 ml cream

At least buying until the next HP release...hummm, about 40 days, more or less. :rofl:

Well me and dad where sent shopping today without mum and w were to get read made pan cakes. But Sainsburys where out  :o so then we tried Waistrose also out :o. We didn't dare go home without any. Luckily Iceland saved us  :o=

I never heard of Pancake Day until now :-\ Is this only celebrated in the UK and Australia?

In Pennsyvlania (I'm not sure about other states), we celebrated Fastnacht Day (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Fastnacht+Day), yesterday. Fastnachts are pretty much a donut, but there is a certain recipe for it.

According to the google search, Fastnacht Day is Shrove Tuesday, or what I call Pancake Day because Im not a religious person.

I think the way it's celebrated is very different - the Netherlands goes all out (but at the nearest weekend) and has a real party - like they do in a fair few South American countries. So it's totally possible you get doughnuts instead

Okay, i cheated and used a box of pancake mixture from the supermarket....

Fillings included, sugar and Lemon (personal fav of mine), choc sauce, maple syrup. My dad decided to try it all.. sugar, lemon, syrup  :rofl:
