Thanks a bunch  >:(

I didn't want to know that! You've ruined book 6 for me!

Maybe we can sticky this thread and use it as our theories for Book 6 thread? Roz and Mark? Oooh, if you do, can we call it 'Divination studies'? Can we? Pretty please? ;D

Spoilers ahead for those who haven't (or dont want to) check out JKR's site!...

JKR says the Half blood prince is not Harry or Voldemort... I wonder who it is then. When I first read OotP I thought that they may have made a mistake with the prophecy and that Neville was really the one that they wanted. Still not sure about this, but he was my strongest candidate if Harry ended up not being the one. However, Dumbledore was pretty certain that it was Harry and not Neville that Voldemort wanted dead. He (Neville) can't be the prince because he is a pureblood. So who are our candidates?

JK says that there are some hints in CoS, so I will have to read that, go through it with a fine tooth comb and see what I can find. When Book 6 comes out I want to go 'aha!' not like PoA when I was kicking myself that I had not spotted the Scabbers-Pettigrew link - that was sooo obvious when you read the exposition at the end by Sirius and Lupin. I guess that I was reading too fast to note details - too addictive and interesting for me to be able to slowly analyse it bit by bit!

Before I go through CoS, here are my possibilities -
Dumbledore - well, we don't know anything about his family, do we? Maybe that is why Voldemort hates him so much - like V, he's a half-blood, also Lucius Malfoy and the death eaters despise him as well. maybe that is why he seems particularly attached to Harry - another half blood like him. A bit far fetched?
Dudley - *sniggers* yes, well, I realy think there is a link between Aunt Petunia to the wizarding world that JK is trying to hide. Why does she keep talking about them, little by little increasing the time they take up in the books? Why does she not just say 'Harry had yet another crappy summer at Number 4 Privet Drive?' Who knows if the 'wizarding gene' that was in Lily and slipped by Petunia may have somehow manifested itself in Dudley and is lying dormant, and as of yet undetectable?

*breathes* Lets start some heated discussion! Who do you think the 'half blood prince' is and why?

: Re:*SPOILER* - theories and wonderings about book 6
: Roz June 29, 2004, 04:23:17 PM

Maybe we can sticky this thread and use it as our theories for Book 6 thread? Roz and Mark?

done!

JKR says the Half blood prince is not Harry or Voldemort

Where did you read that? I didn't see that on the site - once I got the page I didn't manage to ...

I wonder who it is then. When I first read OotP I thought that they may have made a mistake with the prophecy and that Neville was really the one that they wanted.

Me too and I still think Neville has some cards up his sleeve! Don't you think it's mean that Harry never sends Neville a birthday card or present? He's a nasty bully that Potter!

Harry can't be the prince because he is a pureblood.

He's 1/4 muggle... does that make him pureblood? After all, if his mother is a "mudblood" is he truely 'Malfoy style' pureblood?

JK says that there are some hints in CoS, so I will have to read that

I shall read it too - let's see what we can find!!!

Wouldn't it be INSUFFERABLE if it was Draco but I think it will be a fair bit more subtle than that!

: Re:*SPOILER* - theories and wonderings about book 6
: ferdinand_the_yak June 29, 2004, 04:27:25 PM
Sorry, i mean that NEVILLE can't be the prince as he is a pureblood (CoS). Harry is a half-blood with half the genes of muggle Lily and wizard James- Voldemart/Riddle says so in CoS.

If the wizarding gene can skip generations or be a recessive gene - meaning it is not displayed in the individual its present in but may be passed on to offspring (for those who don't have to study genetics at university, you lucky people ;)) then we may have traces of wizardry in Dudley (see my post above)

Roz, that was in the news section, read the last paragraph of the article

*Grins* It is strange, we never hear of Harry buying anyone anything for their birthdays, he does buy Ron and Hermione Xmas pressies in GoF, but then again he is ver generous - always buying rounds of ice cream and those omnioculars at the Quidditch world up - I guess I would be too of I had a safe stuffed with Galleons! ;D HAve you noticed that we never hear of him taking a shower/having a bath either? Ewww!

: Re:*SPOILER* - theories and wonderings about book 6
: Roz June 29, 2004, 04:35:39 PM
No, much as I want it to be Neville, I know it can't be  :-\

He did take a bath once in the prefects room... once in 5 years... niiiiice!

Ahhh, yes thats right - and also the swim in the lake afterwards, i guess ;D

Can we call this thread 'Divination studies'? Or 'Unfogging the Future'? I perfer the first. What do you think?

Ick Gillyweed!

Apparently Dan Radcliff has been taking diving lessons for book 4 :)

Anyway I have left in the book 6 spoiler in the title - we don't want to upset people!!!

Here's an idea - what about Seamus?
'Me dad's a muggle. mam's a witch. He got a bit of a shock when she told him' (from Philosophers Stone)

Am going to read CoS again and write down every character and reference to them in the book... see if I can get to the bottom of this. But then again, JKR doesn't say the prince is menationed by name. And she also says OoTP may hold a few clues. Now analysing CoS is one thing - OoTP is quite another. For one thing its over twice as long. Oh dear

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Roz June 29, 2004, 07:21:53 PM
It's alright, you are not alone. I will help :)

But I'll start with C of S first!

Ben's just read OOTP so it might be fresh in his head too!

FTY - are you still awake? How many hours behind GMT are you guys? Almost 12? Is it 6 in the morning there? Surely not! You were online not long ago!

What about Justin Flinch Fletchly! (sp)

In the chamber of secrets we know he is not pure blood - but is he a mudblood fully? He had been "down for Eton" a school where Princes William and Harry went... ?? Or is that just too obvious?

From Mugglenet

Random facts about the book
The sixth book is yet to be titled, and don't believe anything otherwise.
By the ends of books 6 and 7 "you'll have all the back story you'll need", says JK Rowling, and a prequel will not be necessary
There will be a new Minister of Magic, no more Mr. Fudge.
We will find out what happened to Hagrid's half brother Grawp. He will be a bit more controllable in book 6.
The Dursleys are in the next book, but Harry's stay with them will be the shortest yet. In book 5 he stayed for 4 weeks, so we know his stay will be less than 4 weeks.
Cho Chang will not be a romantic interest of Harry in Book 6, however there will be a "little romance" for Harry says JK.
In books 6 and 7 we will find out exactly why JK killed off Sirius.
Harry becomes even more powerful in book 6.
In books 6 and 7 we will find out why Dumbledore trusts Snape.
We will find out what happened to Wormtail AKA Peter Pettigrew
More about the animosity between Snape and Sirius will be revealed in the last 2 books.
JK has said that giving away the form of Snape's boggart and patronus says too much. We'll definitely find out what Snape's worst fear is, and it'll be important.
Hermione and Draco will NOT end up together in book 6 or 7.
We will find out what exactly Dudley saw when he looked at the dementors.
The reason Voldemort and Harry both didn't die when Voldemort tried to kill Harry, will be revealed.
We will see more of Draco's mother, Narcissa Malfoy, now that Lucius is busy.
We'll learn more about Harry's scar in the last 2 books.
Moaning Myrtle will make an appearance again, as will Tonks.
More about Voldemort's birth will be revealed, thus helping us understand why he is so evil.
Muggles begin to notice "more and more odd" occurrences in book 6, says JK.
The wizarding world is really at war in the sixth book.
Harry will tell his dearest friends about the prophesy after it sinks in to him.
We will learn more about Harry's relatives, including his grandparents (though JK says they aren't really important to the story)
We will find out what happened to Sirius's motorbike.
Book 6 will be shorter than the 5th book (or at least JK's 99% sure, but will not swear on her children's lives)
There will be no "new" nationalities of children at Hogwarts. Hogwarts is a British school, and JK says that adding foreigners for the sake of it is not in her plans.
During an interview, when JKR was asked in which Hogwarts room she'd like to be for 1 hour, she said it would be a room in which Harry has been before, but doesn't know its importance. Yet. (this could have happened in book 5, but we're unsure)
The room of requirement anyone?
It's very important in the plot that Harry has his mother's eyes, and that her wand was very good for charms.

Order of the Phoenix UK/Bloomsbury edition page 39

Harry is in the kitchen after he and Dudley face Dementors in Little Whinging - Harry explains that Lord Voldermort is back - they know Voldermort as it must have been explained in the letter Dumbledore left the night he left Harry with the Dursleys

"Back? Whispered Aunt Petunia.
She was looking at Harry as she had never looked at him before, and all of a sudden for the vety first time in his life, Harry fully appreciated that Aunt Petunia was his mother's sister. He coule not have said why this hit him so very powerfully at this moment. All he knew was that he was not the only person in the room who had an inkling of what Lord Voldermort being back might mean. Aunt Petunia had never in her life looked at him like that before. Her large, pale, eyes (so unlike her sister's) were not narrowed in dislike or anger, they were wide and fearful. The furious pretence that Aunt Petunia had maintained all Harr's life - that there was no magic and no world other than the world she inhabited with Uncle Vernon - seemed to have fallen away"

I think that paragraph is of great importance Petunia has a LOT of secrets up her sleeve/

During an interview for Kids BBC, Victor Greensteet (reporter) asked Rowling if Harry would have a dragon for a pet. This is what she replied: "You can't tame a dragon, no matter what Hagrid thinks. It's simply impossible. So no. He has more common sense. He MAY have a different pet in the future, but for now, I won't say anything else". (This could have been buckbeak, but I'm sure we can expect more pets)
In the same interview for Kids BBC, the reporter asked J. K. if Harry had ever used the internet, and this is what she had to say: "No. They (the Dursleys) won't let him go near Dudley's computer, and Dudley is the only one who has a computer. They hit him if he gets too near to the keyboard. So the answer would be No. I use it a lot, but Harry doesn't. Wizards don't really need to go on the web. They have an even better way to find out what's happening in the outside world, which I think is a lot more fun than the Internet, but I'm going to keep quiet on this one."
The choice between what's right and what's easy will be a pillar of the plot in Harry's last 2 years at Hogwarts
Harry's parents' profession will be a big part of the plot.
Something HUGE will be revealed about Lily Potter.

Ooh I can't wait - I wonder what???

This is interesting

"Why did voldemort pick harry and not neville
JK Rowling replies -> Dumbledore explains this in 'Order of the Phoenix'. Voldemort identified more with the half-blood boy and therefore decided he must be the greater risk. "

So JK counts Harry as half blood! Makes sense his mother was Muggley

as is this:

Siriusstar: Is Remus a pureblood?
JK Rowling replies -> Half blood.

but he's not in chamber so it's probably not him

Then again, JKR did not say that the Prince was mentioned by name... Lupin hey, interesting idea. Just finished exams - yay! So I am off to get some lunch and will ponder CoS

 ;D Good work FTY!

Enjoy the peace and quiet of that after exam lul

 ;D

FTY you do realise that you have totally ignored my suggestion of Justin... do you think it's too obvious?

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: ferdinand_the_yak July 03, 2004, 02:31:29 PM
Sorry Roz  ;)

Justin - hmmm... but in CoS he was attacked because he was a mudblood - who knows though? How did Tom Riddle/Voldemort know who was pureblood who was half blood and who was a mudblood? Is there a way you can tell? It can't be Dean Thomas either then as he has muggle parents (OotP). Who else do we know... so many!

Maybe the title is decieving - maybe the 'half-blood' does not refer to hereditary blood that we are used to hearing about but something else? Can't think what, but its an idea. I mean, with the other titles (before the books were released obviously) we had no idea what they referred to. This title seems too straight forward. Or maybe JK has gotten us so used to her unexpected twists that we are over-suspicious :)

Oh BTW, the 'do not disturb' sign is back on the door on JKR's site - so possible Book 6 info soon! Can't wait! ;D

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: ferdinand_the_yak July 04, 2004, 04:51:58 PM
If you go to JK's site and click on rumours, it comes up as a book with some flashing ads at the bottom. These ads change frequently - the latest has an ad for the Quibbler with the headline that Fudge has been chased from office - could this be a hint for HBP? Ministry of Magic in chaos and Fudge kicked out - I'd be surprised if this was not the case actually, he sure stuffed up the whole 'stop Voldemort's return' issue didn't he?

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: ferdinand_the_yak July 04, 2004, 08:46:32 PM
Ok, this is probably THE most far fetched idea I have come up with...

I was thinking about Dudley being the HBP *smirks* and thinking - well that's not really possible, is it? It would mean either Uncle Vernon or Aunt Petunia being magical. I think we can safely rule out Vernon and the more likely would be Petunia anyway with Lily and all. Maybe Petunia was a failed witch? A squib - and jealous of Lily, so in denial because she could not compete? But I am not sure as to the 'blood status' of squibs - are they mudblood or half blood or pureblood? I mean, if you came from a pureblood lineage and turned out to be a squib, what would that make you? Would this be enough to make it possible that Dudley is a half blood?( ;D)

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Roz July 04, 2004, 09:18:59 PM
Well I never, I suggested the same thing to  Mark whilst we were making our way to Dengie this afternoon ... Mark pointed out (we had already assumend petunia was the magical one) and Vernon was a King  ::)

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Roz July 06, 2004, 05:29:45 AM
Maybe we have been thinking about this all wrong... what about Hagrid? We know very little of his family but are sure we will hear more. He's not traditionally half blood because he is half giant but he's half wizard so to me he's hal blood!

I wonder if I might be on to something!

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: ferdinand_the_yak July 06, 2004, 06:50:56 AM
Ooooh... yes! That may be what I was trying to get it about the half blood not referring to wizard blood in humans only, but other races as well. Hagrid... you may have struck gold there! Otherwise Lupin may be another contender. But I put my money on Hagrid here.

I love this thread, but we need more minds to throw into the melting pot! Come on guys, what does everyone else think? There has got to be others out there who are slightly interested in Harry Potter 6! :D

: Angels July 08, 2004, 01:24:40 AM
I like the idea of Hagrid but I suspect it will be a character that has only had a minor part or referred to in passing that we have all dismissed. I can hear us all saying 'ah but of course, it was obvious, should have seen that one coming'.

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: MakTheYak July 08, 2004, 03:37:11 AM
I'm interested how many generations of magical parents you need to have before being considered a pure blood. Because even though Lilly was a mudblood, Harry was born to two magical folks but he's still a half blood. Do you think there has to be no trace of muggle in your blood line to be a pure blood? Because if so, I think there are quite a lot of half bloods around for us to think about! Doh!

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: greenpaw July 08, 2004, 10:08:49 AM
To narrow it down wouldn't it be a character that was featured in the Chamber of Secrets movie (however small) as Rowling has sway over what goes into the films and what stays out due to its relevence to later books. I heard in an interview she had to tell the director to leave in certain points or characters that seemed minor as they have a higher significance later.
Justin, Colin Creevey maybe?
Maybe Snape is Slytherin/Voldemort's heir somehow and.....
[Goes off to lie down contemplate th deeper meaning of her life]

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: ferdinand_the_yak July 16, 2004, 12:13:14 PM
Good point greenpaw about the movies. But I think it couldn't be Justin or Colin/Dennis Creevey as they are all mudbloods. That leaves only 300 other possibilities :P

All very difficult. Hope brain does not explode with frustration trying to work out who it is before HBP comes out! :P

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Nienna July 17, 2004, 02:36:24 AM
Sean Finnegan is the obvious choice on this one, but I wouldn't discount Dean Thomas either! I can't recall where I read it now, but I'm fairly sure Dean has a wizard father and is actually raised by his muggle mum and step-father ... perhaps Mugglenet can verify or refute this?
Viktor Krum is another possibility even though he doesn't appear till GoF. (not really likely, but you know what JKR is like for pulling a fast one!)
I'm not too sure how many generations it has to go back for you to be considered 'pure blood', but I do know that Neville and Draco fall into that category and doesn't Sirius state in the OotP that all pure-blood families are inter-related when he and Harry are looking at the Black Tapestry? He and Tonks and Narcissa and Bellatrix are all related, so my guess is we'll find out more about Lily and Petunia's background.
Oh ...  and don't forget ... 'Godric's Hollow'  ... the place where Harry's parents had their home ~ surely not a coincidence on the name there hmmmm??!
My money is on the fact that Harry is Gryffindor's Heir!  :o ;D

Just my two Knut's worth!  :P

Nice one Nienna about the Harry being Gryffindor's heir, it s what ALOT of HP fans thought including me. What about little things like when Harry first tested his wand in PS it emitted red and gold sparks? And of course the whole pulling the sword from the hat thing in CoS as well of course :D

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Nienna July 17, 2004, 03:07:05 AM
SO true!
JKR has admitted to one an interviewer about the link to Godric's Hollow and Gryffindor House and saying rather cuttingly that her editor (I think that's who it was ... sorry if I'm wrong!) didn't catch thtat link!
I've been cheating and listening to the audiobooks of Stephen Fry's readings of them ... soooo good and very funny! LOL ;D

I still stand by Harry being Gryffindor's Heir ... now I'm going to be made a fool of when the next book is published  :P

JK's site has a poll on her site where she has listed 3 popular fan questions. The one with the most votes at the end of the month, she answers. The questions are:

1. Is Percy working undercover for any secret organisation/boss?
2. Where has Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail) been since the end of GoF?
3. What did Dumbledore's Howler to Aunt Petunia mean? (Remember my last?)

What do you want to be answered? All 3 is not allowed ;)

I want to know the Howler question if I had to pick one, but also would like to know where Wormtail has been hiding/up to as well

Here is my idea I think it is Neville Longbottom. He is learning more and has come into his magic in book 5 and he was the other child in the phophecy and it was only lord voldemort decision to go after harry potter that put him in the lime light what if he has chosen wrong and neville was the really prince

Arthur weasley for Ministry of  Magic  now that would be cool his first arrest would have to be himself lol

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: sueb34 August 31, 2004, 02:45:36 PM
Late in the day, I know but..........

Isn't it true that JKR says the story-line of Book 6 is linked to CoS - not that the character of the HBP appears there?

Perhaps we're barking up the wrong tree and its an entirely new character?  One of Harry's ancestors - grandfathers, perhaps?
Or a blood link between Harry and Voldemort?

I wonder if she reads this speculation! What are we all going to do when the series ends? It doesn't bear thinking about!

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Roz August 31, 2004, 02:56:39 PM
Yes the HBP storyline was originally a side story in CoS... so there is a chance they didn't appear at all in CoS

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: ferdinand_the_yak August 31, 2004, 02:59:25 PM
She may hint at him though...

I say Dean Thomas is a strong contender though when I learned that he lived with his muggle mum and step-father

His father was a wizard killed by Voldemort and his death eater when he refused to join them - he kept his magical identity from his family secret in order to protect them

Still a while yet before the series ends - don't worry ;D

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: ferdinand_the_yak September 14, 2004, 10:15:41 AM
According to mugglenet, 2 guests at the Edinburgh festival talked to JK separately and she told both of them that Hagrid is NOT the HBP

Of course, this really means nothing as we don't know the truthfulness of the 2 guests. To me, it seems unlikely that JK would rule out a major contender for so definitively. So both mugglenet and I say - take this as an interesting rumour only ;)

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Roz September 14, 2004, 01:39:11 PM
Well I agree.. it's cast a shadow of doubt over Hagrid but not entirely totally and utterly ruled him out  ;)

: Tea_and_Fruit October 09, 2004, 09:59:18 PM
There are a few halfblooded students buti would chose Dean Thomas too, but i think we must wait.

(by the way the german title is Kammer des Schreckens = Chamber of the fright and not Chamber of Secrets = Kammer der Geheimnisse)

So i dont know if informations get lost within the translation of the books

Hey T&F,

I think you may be onto something there, and I am sure it depends on who translated it. I haven't read the German version (I wouldn't be up to it) but I read the French versions of the first 3 books on holiday once and I have to say there weren't any major or worrying changes, just simple things like you talk of here!

i have to agree with roz here about maybe its hagrid, although i dont understand y u say his not a traditional half blood i mean i know its always meant to be half muggle half wizard, but half bloof actually means to have half wizard blood in u, and also jk sed that harry discovers something in Cos that helps or has something to do with wot he finds out in HBP, and if u recall he found out alot about hagrid that year, well its an idea ne way.

i wud like to add that we are all under the speculation or most of us ne way, that the half bllod prince is someone already in the books. and another titbit i wud add is that jk has stated that the mirror sirius gave harry in OoTP ( we are all sad he died i know  :( ..) wud not have helped the way we thought it wud help, but it will help him alot more than we think, and we will find out more in books 6 and 7,let me know wot u think.............................................. also i have a feeling that perhaps aunt petunia maybe a a witch but as she detests the wizarding world decided to not go to hogwarts, my reason for this is jk woz asked if petunia woz a squib and all she sed woz no but.........., let me know wot u think of this too

From mugglenet:

HBP publication date rumors: June 2005
Someone in a position to know (whose name we obviously can't reveal) has given us word that Scholastic is planning for a mid-June 2005 release for book six, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. More specifically, they are considering June 11th and June 18th - both Saturdays.

As always, treat this as a rumor until we can get real confirmation, which in this case will most likely come from JK Rowling's official site.

My two cents: Call it wishful thinking, this time frame seems pretty logical to me. Consider: a June 2005 release would be 2 years after book 5 - ample time to finish a story that is supposed to be significantly less than OOTP (many estimates have it at half the length). She wrote GOF in 1 year, if you remember, and had to re-write half the book because of a gaping plot hole. Granted, that was under different circumstances, but it just shows that we shouldn't underestimate her. It took JKR 3 years to write the monster that is OOTP and that was with extremely long breaks from writing. Jo does have a baby due this spring, but she has said repeatedly that it will not delay the book's release.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :o :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D ;D

Cards - huh ::) THIS is what I have been hanging out for! 8)

Note - I wouldn't mind a triple though 8)

I think it would be great if Petunia was a witch and has been keeping it to herself.  How interesting!!!

As for the length of this book, now that we knjow it has a July release, do you really think it will be half the length of OOTP?  That would only make it 400+ pages.  I hope it is at least 600.  The longer the better if you ask me.  Just more for me to read and get caught up in.

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*

didn't they confirm it was 672 pages in length?

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*

The American publisher, Scholastic, confirmed the 672 pages a day or two ago.  There's been no word from the Bloomsbury about the length of the UK book.

Just got back from shopping and WH Smith has an offer on that for £1 deposit you get the HBP for £9.99 instead of £16.99 when it is published on 16th July. No mention of any give away items like mugs etc. and the offer ends 2nd April. Has anyone else seen any other offers?

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Roz January 29, 2005, 05:58:22 PM
Yeah I picked up their bookmark for that yesterday lunchtime... that seems good - same price as Amazon.co.uk and you can be sure to have it on the day.

It's also cheaper than play.com ;)

But I wonder if we'll find any better offers  :)

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*

I'll check Waterstones today to see if they're doing any offers or not and let you know. ;)

They probably won't know if there's any giveaway stuff at Smiths till nearer the release date.

I didn't bother pre-ordering my copies of OotP ... just sent my other half out to queue for it at Waterstones the evening it was released!  :P
HeeHee .... it was great getting a phone call at half past twelve at night letting me know he'd got it! ;D

Wouldn't it be interesting if the HBP turned out to be a ghost or an animal?

Also, who is going to take care of BuckBeak now?

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: kbmum January 31, 2005, 10:15:36 PM
I think that the House of Black will collapse, due to the infestation of Bundimuns, and kill Kreatcher.  Maybe Buckbeak will be able to fly away for parts unknown before the house can crush him.  Which means, of course, that he'd be able to turn up again at some pivotal point in the story!

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Nienna February 01, 2005, 02:31:52 AM
I think that Sirius will have 'willed' the house to Harry and that Harry will want the Order to carry on using it as it's base.

I wonder who will be the new MoM?

Maybe Buckbeak will excape from Grimmauld Place and fly back to Hogwarts and join Grawp in the Forbidden Forest?

Questions, questions ....

Oh, while I remember ~ I went and asked at Waterstones at the weekend ... the pre-order cost for the HBP is £2, which in turn knocks two quid off the price of the book when you go and buy it. The chap I asked couldn't tell me how much they'd be selling it for and didn't think they'd know till the very last minute once they knew what the other retailers would be selling it for, so it's not too helpful really.
Asda had huge queues outside for the release of the OotP and had both covers available too, so I might 'persuade' my other half to go there instead! LOL ;)

The book store where I got my OotP had a Harry Potter party. They had rounds of Trivial questions and gave the winners Harry Potter promo prizes.  The party started at 8 PM and started selling books at midnight. People who had registered had received  color coded reservation cards in the mail to determine their place in line. Good thing there was a coffee shop and big comfort rooms. I took my 9 year old and we had grea fun. He can't stay awake for New Years midnight but, for Harry Potter he was wide awake. All in all, it was a great night. We are re-reading OotP again in prep for HBP.

But is that Ginny?  There's a debate going on at the Leaky Caudron about who that girl could be.  Lily Potter had red hair, too...

: Re:HPB Scholastic Promotion
: ferdinand_the_yak March 31, 2005, 08:17:38 PM
On first looking at it, I thought the two people to the left of the pillar were Ron and Hermione... is this the general consensus?

I am putting my money on the woman on the right of the pillar as Lily - we were told that her green eyes would play an important role in the last two books... the cover has alot of green on it... also her figure is not as solid or defined as the other characters... like you are looking at her through some mist... or a Pensieve... or the mysterious Veil...

The suspense is killing me :-\

Yes, I noticed that too... and what do you think those silhouetted buildings are from? They don't look like Hogwarts to me - more like a street or village - Godric's Hollow? Grimmauld place? Little Hangleton? London?

Its no use looking at the international edition for clues - apparently Mary GrandPre has read the book but not the illustrator for the international edition. So the clues (if there are any!) are in the US release...

So many questions just looking at the cover :)

I had her confused with the UK cover artist.  This was in a story about Grandpre's OOTP cover at the Leaky Caudron:

Unlike the UK artist, Mary has read the entire book, and the cover illustration is, therefore, inspired by her read of OoTP.

Although to be fair we don't have illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, so really that is why the UK Artist does not have the book before release :).

Hmm...this has me thinking (a fairly dangerous situation, I'll admit).  Roz and FTY, would it be safe to assume that any thread about the HBP is a spoiler area, and if people don't want to be tipped off about the plot or storylines, they shouldn't read the threads?

: Re:HPB Scholastic Promotion

I remember how bad it was just before OOTP came out, and how angry I was that I stumbled across a post on another message board that said who died.  I will be staying far away from several sites, because I don't want any surprises ruined.

: Re:HPB Scholastic Promotion
: Morningangel-Iola March 31, 2005, 10:24:57 PM
How did you find out before hand? I do avoid the spoilers thread. I need to be good or I'm like a moth to a flame and then I am worrying about things ::)

: Re:HPB Scholastic Promotion
: kbmum March 31, 2005, 10:33:47 PM
I saw a message on another board that wasn't labeled properly (such as *spoiler* or *the death*), and I read it.  The author said he'd gotten a copy early from a book seller and posted the name of the person who died.  Since it was one of my favorite characters, I didn't even want to read the book when I got it.

I don't want to spoil my enjoyment of the next two books, so while I'll look at the artwork or even read info that Scholastic and Bloomsbury release, I won't read any posts on the subject once the printing begins.

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: kbmum April 10, 2005, 08:12:31 PM
Hmm, I never thought about Malfoy Manor.  Maybe it is!  In my mind, I pictured it scarier than this drawing.  Sort of like the House of Black -- little light, serpets everywhere, very foreboding.

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*

Yes I think you are right, bit too light for a dark wizard.  Could be that the artist just saw the word prince in the title and thought they would draw a castle  ;D

I can't wait for the book now.  It seems to be getting further away the closer it gets, if that makes sense ???  All of a sudden July seems to be creeping up on us instead of the usual year flying by.

The bit that has got me most curious is on JK's web site where she has said not everyone will like the book.  I don't know whether this is because she kills someone we all like, as has been suggested, or because she pairs up the kids into dating couples.

Oh just to say I personnally love speculation, so lots of ideas please just to keep me going. ;)

Roll on July  ;D

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Sharon April 21, 2005, 09:57:24 PM
Well since I said I liked speculation all ideas have dried up ;D

So couple of things for people to comment/agree/disagree with

Percy will be revealed as a Deatheater, proving you don't have to be a Slytherin to be a dark wizard.

It will be revealed that the reason Snape turned 'good' was that he found out that the Potters were about to be killed.  He tried to warn Dumbledor but was too late.

Victor will be the killed saving Hermione and Ron's life.

Any thoughts......

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: grecopa April 22, 2005, 09:55:20 AM
My thoughts:  As for Snape, In Harry's memory he hears a man's voice telling Lilly to run before Voldemort strikes.  JKR never said it was Harry's father.  Maybe it was Snape who went to warn them and got caught up in the attack.  That would be proof enough for Dumbledore to trust him.  For Percy being a deatheater, that sounds like a good story line.  There has to be one bad seed in the Weasley family. ::)  Victor getting killed, hmmm...a good possibility.  Everyone likes him but he's not a major character.  I could live with that one. ;)  But poor Hermione!

: Re:'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: Sharon April 23, 2005, 01:33:25 AM
I had never given a thought to Snape being the male voice but wouldn't that be good  :D  And it could work.  If Pettigrew told Voldemort their wereabouts with Snape in the room that would explain how he could get there first.  I get the impression Snape was not just a run of the mill Deatheater but high up in the ranks.  Certainly powerful enough to stop the likes of Lucius Malfoy attacking him once he had betrayed Voldemort.

As for Percy the main reason I want him to be bad is to prove you can't stero-type people.  So I want a Griffindor to be bad and a Slytherin to do something really good, like say Goyle saving Ginny's life. ;D

As for poor Hermione she has her pick of the lads; Ron, Neville, Harry, Fred or George  ;)

I have to say all these theories are popping up everywhere i look! most of them make sense apart from people like hagrid being the half-blood prince. how can he? yes he may be a half-wizard, but his father is dead, so speaking in terms of royalty for example, if the father (King) dies, then the son (Prince) becomes the King. so Hagrid would technically be a king, not a prince. do you get me? ???

With the book mere days away I thought it would be nice for people to have one big, wild prediction.  That way we will know whoever gets the nearest to what actually happens is:-

a. JKR in disguise :o
b. Professor Trewlaney under a pseudonym  ;D
c. A really good guesser

So my wild stab in the dark is that Hogwarts will close down as a school just before Christmas and become the Head Quarters of the Order of the Phoenix.  When the Ministry try to kick them out the Half Blood Prince arrives, who just happens to be the Heir of Godric Gryffindor and therefore the rightful owner of the castle.  Once he enters Hogwarts the castle senses his presence and rejuvenates, becoming like it was 1000 years before.

(nothing too detailed  ;) )

: Re: 'Divination studies' *BOOK 6 SPOILERS*
: grecopa July 14, 2005, 11:35:17 PM
I have 3 predictions I want to post, and I'll post again in Mikes thread.  I just want to do it now so I don't forget with all the excitement. ;)
1.)  I think Dumbledore trusts Snape because Snape was the one who tried to warn Harry's parents about Voldemort.  I believe he was in the house at the time Voldemort arrived.
2.)  This is probably a little far fetched, but I believe that Harry's mother is a relation to Voldemort.  Voldemort went back and killed his muggle father when he was a teenager.  Who's to say that his father didn't remarry and have other children during those 17 years while Voldemort was growing up?   Maybe Lily is the daughter (or grand daughter?) of one of those children?  That would acount for her being born to muggle parents, but still having a tie to Voldemort. Green eyes, etc.
3.) If there is a war, I predict that Goblins and/or house elves will play a major part.  The key to winning may be to get Goblins and House Elves on the good wizarding side.

Ok, that's all on record in case my predictions come true.  Yeah, right. ::)

Galaxy Quest was only on the other day. I think Alan is at his best in Sense and Sensebility only not if you want that evil edge.

I LOVE that movie. And Alan in it  :-* I've been such a big fan of his since I first saw that movie. I agree he is at his best there, providing you don't want a bad/evil character. I must watch this movie again soon...

Yeah that was what reminded me, he still acted wonderfully, it was just the face make-up ;)

I am a huge Alan Rickman fan too.  I know he looks completely different in the HP movies, but I do like that bad guy with accent image about him.  That is why this book sort of depressed me (still not over it :'()

I really hope to see a costume/auto from him at some point.  That would be awesome!!!  Of course, I would need to hopefully pull it frmo a box, since prices for the auto on eBay would probably go way above my spending limit.

I just finished HBP on Saturday - my first time reading the HP books is now over.  :'( I always said I'd never read them, and now I have, and they were amazing! Can't wait for #7.

Anyway.. HBP. I don't think Dumbledore's dead, and I don't think Snape is on Voldermort's side. I spent some time reading dumbledoreisnotdead.com, and some of my thoughts on his death seem to be on there, though in more detail. I hope he's not dead anyway.

As for book 7.. I have no idea what's going to happen. I just hope that Harry/Ron/Hermione survive it.

I've just had a look and there's some very interesting points on that site. Although saying DD was struck with expeliarus (or however you spell it) can't be right thats a red beam, what do we know other than AK that has green light?

I dont think we need to shift through all the spells to find one thats green, we need to look more into these lines

5. Don't Point That At Me Unless You Mean It

Several times in the course of the Harry Potter books, J.K. has told us that the Avada Kedavra is not a curse you can make lightly.

In Goblet of Fire, the fake Mad Eye Moody tells his DADA class:

"Avada Kedavra's a curse that needs a powerful bit of magic behind it -- you could all get your wands out now and point them at me and say the words, and I doubt I'd get so much as a nosebleed." (GoF pg 217/192)

And in Order of the Phoenix, we learn more about Avada Kedavra when Harry tries to curse Bellatrix:

Hatred rose in Harry such that he had never known before. He flung himself out from behind the fountain and bellowed "Crucio!" Bellatrix screamed. The spell had knocked her off her feet, but she did not writhe or shriek with pain as Neville had -- she was already on her feet again ... "Never used an Unforgivable Curse before, have you, boy?" she yelled. "You need to mean them, Potter! You need to really want to cause pain -- to enjoy it ..." (OotP pg 810/715)

If Snape was really working on Dumbledore's orders to make it look to the world as if Snape had killed him, even if he had used the real Avada Kedavra, if he had not really meant it, if he really didn't want to kill Dumbledore, then isn't it possible that the curse didn't kill Dumbledore, but only injured him badly?
