I am going to show my total Britishness now.  What is a taco - is it anything to do with Taco Bell?  Probably all other Brits know but my taste buds stretch as far as the local fish and chip shop  ;D

Oh and I did know about poor old Cedric - that is why I only support him a little bit  ;)

InMexico tacos are a soft pliable tortilla kind of thing (made from maize or wheat), in the US it seems to be a deep-fried crispy tortilla shell, unless we are talking about breakfast time and then it's a whole different story.

Oh yes and then they fill it with stuff. I dunno whether it's any good, but I have been warned off taco bells by American flatmates  :-\

The only reason I know about Taco Bell is because of the Demolition Man, I love that film  :rofl:  So they seem to be a bit like a versatile pancake that can be soggy or crunchy?

I love Taco Bell, so I guess it is all up to your taste buds. I met my husband working at a Mexican Restaurant, and I prefered the fast food Taco Bell Tacos over the one from the restaurant.

And yes, you can order soft tacos or hard shell tacos.  It is a Mexican/Spanish dish.

I don't mean to be difficult here but I have never come across this in Spain (remember in Spain a tortilla is a type of Omelette, there's definitely something 'lost in translation' there!). And if it originated from Maize then it definitely didn't originate in Spain  :-\

Taco Bell makes a very Americanized version of Mexican food.  It's okay.  I had the more authentic stuff when I lived in LA and nothing can compare to that for me. :)

Kbmum is so right on the tacos!  Taco Bell is just a generic hamburger meat taco, although not too bad for fast food (but very fattening).  When we lived in San Diego I got to have some REAL tacos, burritos, etc.  There's a HUGE difference!  I miss it.  :'(  But here in Florida we can get some good Cuban food.  Pork, fried plantains, black beans and rice!  Yum!!  Too bad Cedrick will never get to try it.  ;)

I love Cuban food.  I tried it when my husband and I honeymooned in the Floriday Keys, but it's very hard to find up north.

I agree!!! Once you have had authentic Mexican food, there is nothing that compares!!!

seriously, Tacos (all Mexican food actually, since it's made with the same four ingredients) are great!

take a tortilla (that round lookin' thing made of corn flour), soft or hard, fill it with ground beef (I believe you guys call it mince), that's seasoned with taco seasoning (words can't describe how good this tastes, you either know or you don't), then you sprinkle shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, and diced tomatoes on top.....

and finally, you can put a dollop of sour cream on top, if you like.....but it's not my preference......

The new pizza crepe taco pancake chili bag

Start with a crunchy all-beef taco smothered in nacho cheese, lettuce, tomato and our special southwestern sauce.
Wrap it in a soft flour tortilla with a layer of refried beans in between.
Wrap that in a savory corn tortilla with a midlle layer of monterey jack cheese.
Take a deep-fried gordita shell, smear on a layer of our special guacamolito sauce, and wrap that around the outside.
Bake it in a corn husk filled with pico de gallo, then wrap that in an authentic Parisian crepe, filled with egg, gruyere, merguez sausage and portabello mushrooms.
Wrap the whole thing in a Chicago-style deep dish meat-lover's pizza.
Roll it up in a blueberry panacke, dip it in batter, and deep fry until it's golden brown.
Serve it in commemorative tote bag filled with spicy vegetarian chili.
