: Terrorist raids in Australia
: ferdinand_the_yak November 08, 2005, 06:14:32 PM
Several police raids took place this morning, they found evidence that these people were building explosive devices. It was so close to my boyfriend's place that he was woken by the helicopters taking part in the raid. It has been claimed that had these people succeeded, it would have been as catastrophic as Madrid or London. I walk past Town Hall (major train station in Sydney) to get to work, a bomb going off there in peak hour would kill hundreds :-\

They have also arrested people in Melbourne...one of the men allegedly wanted to be the first suicide bomber in Australia. Kate and Trey, be careful and stay safe!

It sounds like a lucky escape Jo - but yes - everyone be careful because I don't think these people will give up at the first hurdle. They never seem to catch the masterminds behind all this, just their unfortunate pawns.

The Australian police deserve a huge pat on the back for catching this lot  :)

I think they handled it extremely well. They seem to avoided a large attack..and coming up to the commonwealth games there has been alot of talk of a terrorist attack on the horizon. Well done to all the police involved for protecting us so well  :D

I was very happy to hear that your Security Services were successful as I was quite worried about all my friends from Down Under especially as you all live in the two cities mentioned!  My advise is to be vigilant at all times and try to be aware of who is near you as well.  Be safe and take care.

Its something that crosses my mind when Im travelling to uni...I catch the train into the city, through the city loop (which is a bit like the london underground). Ive noticed that whenever something happens overseas, a whole heap of police reponse people are present on the underground platforms, so at least they are trying to do something...
they have also launched a "see something, say something' campaign to report suspicious parcels, but apparently one person couldnt remember the number so they rang the police, and were told to stop overreacting!
