I've been searching EBay for the past few days gathering Map images because I head off to Michaels for supplys. Anyways, a great number of maps have popped up (and I've 'borrowed  ;)' some images from mine) and I found a very detailed movie accurate Map that looks just like it came out of the movie

That's a great map with lots of detail. :)  Too bad the artist called one section the Dark Forest instead of the Forbidden Forest.

I sent an email to the seller to ask about that.
Here's the reply:

"While the book calls it the forbidden forest the actual marauders map prop itself from the movie calls it the dark forest. Since the movie prop served more for my inspiration I decided to keep it as close to the actual movie prop and went with Dark Forest instead."

I never caught that in the movie map, I'm gonna go watch it again (any excuse is good enough for me), closer.

Well...even if that's true, the movie map spells Moony as "Mooney."  The seller corrected that.  It just seems a shame to me that this person put so much work into the replica only to have what I consider to be a big error.

I think the movie map did have Dark Forest.

If you look to the right you see that its The Quidditch Pitch then what is suppose to be Hogsmeade.
Its actually suppose to be the other way around, Hogsmeade then The Quidditch Pitch. He also used the part where Harry opens the map when Fred and George give it to him as the second section of the map when really its suppose to be Hogsmeade. The rest of the map is based of the Lupin Office once except for that little error on his part :)

Whilst the map is gorgeous (I agree the Dark Forest should be Forbidden, after all what came first, the book or the film  >:() ) did you notice the little broomstick that follows the cursor?  How cute is that  ;D

Well the dark forest rings a bell. Is it not just called the forbidden forest because it is. Or is it th dark lark I am getting confused with. ??? now I am very confused and shutting up

The movie version is THE DARK FOREST. I also looked it up and its called the Forbidden Forest because well...its forbidden. Thats not its proper name. I could be wrong. I didnt use the Lexion so I'm not sure so correct me if I'm wrong :)

I pulled mine out and it also says "The Dark Forest".

I had stated earlier that my map was in German.  Well, I must not have totally inspected it when I got it.  I was trying to read the lettering (which I thought were words) that goes around the whole map.  Well I couldn't read it and it looked like German (I have a sister-in-law that is 100% German and she brings things back to the US for me. So I have a lot of things around here that I can't read!!) so I just called it German!! ::)  But it's just lettering on the map!!!  :-[  The rooms are labeled in English.  Can we say "DUUUUHHHH"!

When you got that map you must have one of those "I'm So Happy To Finally Have a Marauders Map I Really Dont Care What Language its In Or If Its the Map is outlined in just Letters" moments :P

Its also says *The forbidden forest is sometimes know as The Forbidden Forest but more often as just "the forest"*

If JK refers to it as the Forbidden Forest in her books, that's good enough for me. :)

I've seen those on EBay...or am I mistaken. I'd love to have one. Anyways, very detailed. Mine has just letters all around it (didnt feel like writting words all around it but parts of Hogsmeade has some words :rofl: ). Like you said, you'd have look closer to actually tell :D

Lol, id just like to point out that hogsmeade isn't on the map, in fact, hogsmeade doesnt exist on the actual prop, its actually diagon alley, so i don't know what your talking about when you say that its incorrect in the order

BTW - Why would Diagon Alley be on the Map when that is farther from Hogwarts then Hogsmeade ::)

dont ask me why diagon alley is on the map and hogsmeade isnt, that just how the prop is, and i dont know why.  And yes i am the seller.

Hey, dont worry about having hogsmeade in the map, i plan on updating my map you see online eventually and hogsmeade is one of the things i plan on adding to it.  Even tho it is not in the movie version in any of the scenes doesnt mean that it cant exist, b/c the movie version is a completely digital map and doesnt really exist except for the one you see sitting on lupins desk near the end of the movie which if you take a closer look is almost completely blank.  All the other scenes you see with people walking around and other things are all computer graphics and special effects, so who is to say hogsmeade isnt on one of the panels they dont show.  My map is just based on the panels that i know for a fact actually exist and are seen in the movie.

I thought they actually had a map in the movie.....not just the one on his desk, but even whan Harry is looking at it.  And then the movement on the map is computer generated, but the basic stuff that is stationary is still there.....But what do I know.

Actualy it took me two months of research and drawing to make my map.

Now that's dedication! :o  I know I could never create something like this, my attention span is too short. :P

I used pictures from the offical POA website and my Honeydukes sections was actually their Diagon Alley part. I just through it made more since for Honeydukes to be on the Map then Diagon Alley :)

I would go with whatever you think should be on the map Mike.  After all it was JKR's invention and she has never said exactly what it looks like.  The film version was just the prop masters best guess.  I definitely like the idea of having Hogsmeade on there - after all we know the Shrieking Shack was part of the map.

I write kind of big, thats why I need a small ball point pin the next go, so I couldnt fit the shricking shack on there but I did manage to make the road toward it :rofl:

That's a lot of money but that was a lot of map as well.  I hope the map looks as lovely in real life - I bet some little kid somewhere will have the time of their lives with map  ;D

Lol, thanks.  It actually did say honeydukes on the front and back of the box also.  But WB pulled it from ebay b/c of that, so i had to remove it in order to keep selling them.  Kind of like my Marauder's Map, i had to remove all Harry Potter related names from it in order to sell them still.  But its ok, i now make custom maps for people to order and you jsut tell me all the names you want on it and the name of the school and stuff.  You can check it out if you want at my shop The Wizard Store.  Click the banner in my signature to go to it.  I have butterbeer labels under the free props section also so you can make your own butterbeer bottles. Yea, my two current projects are a remembrall (Glowing Orb), and the monster book of monsters (Monster Book).  The Remembrall will actually light up red when you hold it (i hope  :o=) either by a thermal resistor that is heated from a hand holding it or i might just make it a push button.  Whichever is easier and wont cost me a fortune to make, and be abel to replicate.  The monster book of monsters is about halfway done.  I made it to scale so its pretty big.  I used a keepsake book box for the base.  Basically its a book shaped box that you can store items in.  Yea, some other items that are in predesign stages still are my fizzing wizzbees and exploding bon bons.  Ill post pictures here once i get them done hopefully.

The small mainded marketing people at WB sure missed several boat lads of money by not developing more products.
They must all live in a plastic world...meaning little kids' toys.

They'd make millions off making replicas of all the Candy wrappers and other litlte props.

The thing i hate the most about WB is that they dont make half this stuff and they never plan to either. But when people make it for themselves and sell it on ebay WB gets mad and pulls it all off.  Like i could see them doing that if they had there own version of it being sold, and people were selling knockoffs, but the fact that they dont make make their own and and dont plan on it is what makes this stupid.  I mean, like my marauders maps, everyone wants one, and when WB pulled it off of ebay a bunch of people contacted me saying they still want one because its a popular item, and WB isnt going to make one. (This in turn lead me to open my own store, lol)

Noble Collections said something about making licensed paper props. They replied to my message "We have licences to make a few more props to me announced this Spring on are site including some paper props, a first for Noble."  I could be wrong because I deleted the actually message a few weeks ago. I sent the e-mail off about 3 or 4 months ago so I don't really know if its still be discuss or not but what do you think the price would be for a Map :o Expensive I'm sure

Maps would probly be expensive.  This is mainly because there is no real cheap way of making these (this is why i dont think they make them now).  For their wands, they jsut have a machine pour the resin into a mold and a wand pops out.  For maps, unless if they just make it one long flat thing with no flaps on it (Which wouldnt look anything like the movie one), theres no way for a machine to make it easily, or at all.

I think they might not make them now, I had the same thought ::) But I'd hate to have some really stupid paper prop but Noble really doesnt do that stuff so maybe it was a thought they were looking into it. Ether way, I'm making my own ;)

wanna hear something cool you could try doing after you finished your map. (This is what my map looks like).  I made a map completely blank, i put it together jsut like one would look like if it was writen on.  Then i went out to the store and bought one of those invisible writing pens, that has a blacklight in the other end usually, and hand drew my entire map on it while using a bigger blacklight to make sure i did it right.  So now i have a completely blank map to the normal eye, but when you put it under a black light. BAM. I solemnly swear i am up to no good and have a marauders map.  If you really wanted to make it cool, you could even do what i did and take the mini blacklight bulb out of the pen you bought and buy a light up wand from noble (The ones where you wave it and it goes on) and replace the bulb in that with the blacklight bulb.  (CAUTION: only try this if you feel completely comfortable with electronics and the wand.  otherwise i suggest disguising the blacklight pen as a wand).  This way i can take my marauders map out to screenigns and what not and when people as what im holding i can go "I solemnly swear i am up to no good" wave my wand at the Map so it lights up the blacklight which in turn makes the map visible.  Kinda cool huh.  You can try it you really want.  You can get blacklight pens for pretty cheap at your local radio shack usually.

just be careful not to break the wand.  and make sure that the light you use runs off of two AAA.

Actually your the first person ive told that ive made that map.  The only people that have seen the map are the people at the GOF premiere i went to at midnight.  Otherwise no one else knows it exists.  Mainly because I dont want everyone copying my idea that way hopefully when i bust it out for future hp outings and especially book 7 release, itll be something no ones seen b4 and people will be in awe.  (That and if people knew i made an invisible map that appears with the wand, theyd want me to make me one of those for them instead of the ones I sell on my site, and the invisible one took me two straight weeks to make, so its not ideal to sell)

That is a really clever idea JTobcat.  It is just a shame WB are being so awkward.  That is definitely the sort of thing you could copyright and market if not for them.  Have you got any plans for stuff that has been in GOF, like that gorgeous silver menu card?

JTobcat, do you plan on listing anything on ebay again?  I had my Quidditch program prop pulled and haven't listed any props since.  D you think the problem was listing them with Harry Potter in the title?  I have questions, so I'll PM you.

Right now i kinda still sell some things on ebay, sorta, lol.  Basically, I sell the light up wands that noble sells along with my wizard map.  I call it that, b/c i cant figure out if Marauder's Map is copyrighted or not, so to be safe i call it a Wizards Map. (But its customizable, so people just tell me to call it the Maurauders map after they buy it).  I do it this way b/c then im not using WB trademarked names to sell my item.  In fact, my Wizard Map cant be associated with WB at all as there are no WB names on it.  I jsut sell a wand with it on Ebay as a way to get people to notice it still, because in truth, without being able to use the name harry potter, no one would ever come across the map.  Other things i know you cant do when listing items is use their copyrighted images (like using pictures from the movie in your listing, and technically your not sposed to use stock pictures that you copied from their site either so you dont have to take apicture of the item yourself)

Ummm.....so far i havent put much thought into props from GoF yet, mainly because a lot of my time has gone into setting up my store, and getting the rest of my props finished.  Once i get things going, and get settled (and see GoF a few more times ;)), ill come up with some ideas from that one too
