: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: Roz August 31, 2005, 02:09:02 AM
Hi everyone.

Whilst it seems very early to be talking about Christmas, it's important to start this early - last year we had a "Secret Santa" scheme within the Yak Shack, and wrapped presents flew across the globe to sit under Christmas trees in totally different climates and time zones... I digress...

At this stage I am just asking you to email if you would like to join in - to get an idea of how popular it would be again this year.

We are starting early so that anyone who wants to send by surface mail can do so - if there is demand we may have a second wave of secret santas for late-starters in November if anyone's feeling left out ;)

If you would like to take part then please send an email to

Santa2005@theyakshack.co.uk

Giving me

1) your full name and address,

2) your Yak Shack ID,

3) Please state whether you are prepared to send abroad (if you only want to participate within your country then that's fine, but you must let us know),

and

4) please also give me hints about what your interests - so you could state your favourite TV series/films. This info will be passed onto your Santa but your Santa will then be given free reign to try to find a nice present for you - whether it be related to cards or your favourite shows :)).

I will then assign everyone a Santa, can I request that everyone tries to wrap up the parcel in paper ready for putting under the tree to make it that little extra special?

OK, forgive my ignorance/stupidity here but what exactly is Secret Santa?  The only time I've ever heard of it is in an episode of Friends and they were trying to swap Secret Santa's for some reason.  I didn't get it then either!  ???

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: Morningangel-Iola September 02, 2005, 03:43:44 AM
Every one gets a person to buy for only the person isn't supposed to know who bought thier present the only person to know should be the master mind behind it. ALthough it doesn't always work and someone messed it up big time where I worked last Christmas and I ended up getting the gift they got because they had lost someone ie me, so it wasn't at all personalities and where did I work a gifts department ::)

Jumping up behind the crowd who's already signed up, I finally (I'm such a procrastinator) get the Secret Santa email sent to Roz and declare that I'm in it, too! It was a great idea last year and another great idea this year ;D

OK folks, the first round of emails are out. You CAN STILL PARTICIPATE, but you need to sign up ASAP.

If you haven't had an email now telling you who to be Santa to, please contact me because I have not had your email application, but don't worry I'm not  in this yet either, I hope there will be more rounds to come!

Woo Hoo!! Just send Roz a PM and I'm sure she'll include you Jackie.
You'll need to send her your address details and your likes/preferences ... can't remember what else but I'm sure Roz will tell you! ;D

: Roz October 12, 2005, 03:58:40 AM
Not at all, in fact we already have 3 lovely participants in the next round, if you come on board we are ready to do another ring, although the more the merrier really.

This next ring will close at the end of the month (on Halloween!!!) (although I'll be at a party ;D so if you are early on the morn of Nov 1st then don't fret, but please don't dilly dally, let me know as soon as possible that you want to take part)).

All you need to do is send an email to:

Santa2005@theyakshack.co.uk

Giving me

1) your full name and address,

2) your Yak Shack ID,

3) Please state whether you are prepared to send abroad (if you only want to participate within your country then that's fine, but you must let us know),

and

4) please also give me hints about what your interests - so you could state your favourite TV series/films. This info will be passed onto your Santa but your Santa will then be given free reign to try to find a nice present for you - whether it be related to cards or your favourite shows).

Bless 'em.

Does anyone know the origin of the term rugrats? Just cos children like to roll around on fluffy rugs? And grow fast?

Okay, I only vaguely remember the whole Secret Santa thing from my younger school days; what's the whole deal with this again?

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: blackcat20 October 19, 2005, 05:23:25 AM
Im just wondering, is it too early to start thinking about sending pressies, or when is the best time? Obviously the sea-mail date has been and gone, and airmail is relatively quick, but I dont want to leave it too late....

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: Nienna October 19, 2005, 06:29:54 AM
I was thinking that those of us sending stuff overseas should aim to get their pressies bought and packed and on their way by the third week of November ... maybe a bit sooner depending on destination of course.
I'm not too sure when the recommended last posting dates are, but I'd rather send mine too early than it arrive after Christmas! ::)
Well that's the date I'm gonna stick to unless anyone else has better info to guide us all with ... :)

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: ferdinand_the_yak October 19, 2005, 11:04:30 AM
It would also depend on where you are sending to as well, I know that sometimes its not a matter of distance, but of countries... UK to US i have heard can take up to 2-3 weeks, but a US to Aus parcel was sent to me last Wednesday and I got it in 6 days (including the weekend)... so hopefully your Santa is in a post-friendly locale ;) Highly variable, these are though, so best err on the safe side.

I need to get my thinking cap on then... :o

hmmm. well im mostly done with mine (Im a virgo, we're super organised  ;D) But its a bit early to send. I guess Ill aim for mid Nov, as I want it there before christmas also, and given the amount of mail at that time of year, im sure it will take longer than usual...

Sent you an email. Just wondering if it arrived ok?   ;D

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: blackcat20 October 22, 2005, 09:58:58 AM
Also, how are we meant to fill in the customs forms without giving away the suprise?  ???

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: Roz October 22, 2005, 03:40:00 PM
Be vague! But sufficiently detailed enough not to let the parcel get opened by customs (delayed and possibly wrecked), so it can be "trading cards" or "book" - things that people might guess from the size of the packet anyway I guess. That's all I can suggest.

Hi Roz
Sent you an email. Just wondering if it arrived ok? ;D

To go in the second round? Actually they go to Mark - but I'll check

I am afraid I may have overdone it with my Secret Santa  :-[ I just kept finding a lot of things on sale at my local stores and of course Mikey was a big help to me on a few things  ;D (Thanks Mikey  :)).

This is my first year of doing this, I helped my brother a little bit last year when he did it and it looked like fun so I thought I would give it a try, plus I just joined the forum this year thanks to my brother telling me how nice everyone was and how much fun it is here  ;D I am the type of person who can't stand being late for anything just ask Mikey and this to me was like being late only through mailing it at the post office instead of trying to get somewhere on time  ::) :-[

Righty ho, I've been trying to get in contact with one member who's not supplied their address and other necessary details, so if you want to take part (or if anyone new wants to join in this round) please contact me ASAP.

So this is the final call - if anyone wants to join in - please send me ALL the information I need by this time tomorrow (18:00 GMT) (details of the info I need are in the first page of this thread!)

The final round of Secret Santas will be sent out tomorrow so this is the LAST CHANCE to join in this year.

Many thanks

Are we allowed to put our names on a gift tag, or should it be a suprise? (it will be on the customs form anyway i guess...)

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Sa
: ferdinand_the_yak November 10, 2005, 04:37:05 PM

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: blackcat20 November 10, 2005, 04:44:20 PM
really? whats the fun in that? Ive put my first name on the gift tag (did that before I thought of it...) but I guess I could get someone else to send it....though my proper name isnt what I use on here  :P

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Sa
: ferdinand_the_yak November 10, 2005, 04:50:49 PM
Its how we played it in school, no-one knew who got what from whom just incase some could afford more than others. In reality, everyone found out somehow, but it was the intention I guess. I didn't tell my Santee who I was last time (nor did my Santa tell me who they were).

Of course if people prefer to know who their Santa is, we could go down that path this year

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?

Well signatures aren't usually readable. But don't they usually like a return address on the parcel? Although if you put your initials, unless you know the parcel receiver well they might not realise  :-\

Hello everyone!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! It will be here before you know it.. and Christmas will be around the corner...and for those of you waiting to open gifts from your Secret Santa, it will seem like forever! lol ;D Well I am kinda like rns91294..I have a huge family to buy for, (but would like to try to get in next year?) Hopefully I can get started sooner with MY family and finish faster so that I have a little more money left over, for the Secret Santa. Any way I would like to know what everyone gets too. so I hope you will post, for those of us that have to make do with watching the festivities! lol It sounds like you are all going to have a GREAT time, finding, wrapping, sending and finally getting to OPEN your presents. This is a GREAT idea. wish I had the money to join in. (I think I spent most of it on cards)  ::)

Please let us all know what you get we will be waiting patiently.

I sent off my package today.  ;D

To the person who gets it-I'm not a very good wrapper, so don't laugh!

: Scifi Cards November 23, 2005, 08:24:22 AM
Sent mine off today as well.  It has a long trip ahead of itself, so I hope it makes it in good shape.

I, however, am a good wrapper so if I get laughed at... :'(

I also realized how tough it is to be anonymous or much of a surprise when you have to fill out customs paperwork.  Full description and full name of the sender.  Oh well, we'll just pretend it's a secret. ::)

Ed

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: blackcat20 November 23, 2005, 08:28:53 AM
I posted mine over the weekend.

It is hard to be anonymous, which is why we had this discussion a few weeks back. I did work out though that for Aussie customs forms, only a signature goes on the actual package, the bit with full name address etc stays with the post office... but given Im one of about 6 Aussies on here, it will still be fairly easy to work out...

I still havent started looking :-X I finding it rather hard to find my gift :P

I'm cant really fold down the sides of presents well but I am a OK wrapper. I wrap most of my present for Christmas unless my mom gets me something she doesnt want me to know about :)

I have half of mine so have to finish it off this week and send it next week...I hope its not too late  :-\

It is hard to be anonymous with only a few of us here in australia...and people can guess really cause I will put a return address on mine in case it gets lost or something...oh well it is still fun  ;D hope the person who gets my pressie likes it, it has been difficult to work out what to get!

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: blackcat20 November 23, 2005, 09:30:36 AM
i put a return address...but not my name  ::) and my signature is mostly illegible (i hope)

: Scifi Cards November 23, 2005, 11:56:18 AM
Well, the US forms require a full name, address, detailed description.  Next they'll want a DNA sample just in case.

It will be no mystery when mine arrives, but it's wrapped so there is some element of surprise.

Well the pressy I found should be sent to me this week and then it can begin the last leg of it's journey.  I have been lucky, this was so easy to buy for this person  ;D  Just remember everyone, no peeking when they start to arrive  ;)

One day remind me to tell you the story behind Bogleg and then you will see how funny this is

No my SSS was even easier.  Only trouble is the rotten thing isn't here yet  >:()  I still have about a week to post it on so I am not too worried...... yet  ::)

Note to my SSS partner - the present isn't really rotten, it is gorgeous.  I think.  I hope.

Thank you so much.  It is now sat in the corner of the room, looking all Christmasy and just begging to be opened.  But I will be good 0:)

I should also say that my present arrived from my Secret Santa ... My question is.... do I really have to wait to open it? It came SUCH a long way to sit idly in the corner *sniff* it looks so sad and lonely...

I should confess that I have the worst time waiting. I search the house annually for presents and receipts and will call my husband when I know he's out shopping to see if I can figure out where he is ...

Hello. My name is Joanna and I have no patience.

Just wanted to let my secret santa know that their parcel arrived safe and sound today. It was sitting patiently on my front doorstep when I got home  ;D hmmm, now Ive just gotta keep myself from opening it...only 13 days to go  8)

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: sketchqueen December 13, 2005, 02:58:55 AM
To my Santa ... I'm sorry :( I can't read. I missed the international postal mailing date by 1 day. With any luck, it'll still arrive in time, but the post office won't guarantee it. So, I stuck a little extra something in the top to make up for the delay :) in case there was a delay. But I'm hoping there's no delay.

: Re: Christmas is looming, anyone like to take part in an international Secret Santa?
: Nienna December 13, 2005, 03:04:29 AM
It's more the Post Office guaranteeing the post to be delivered by Xmas if the mail is sent by that date than anything else.
I shouldn't worry too much Joanna ... one day late isn't too bad and I imagine your parcel will arrive in good time. ;)

I just sent mine today too (to be exact, I am off to the PO now) so I hope it gets there in time... I am usually way more organised than this, but due to work and other issues I was a bit lazy this year :( I even bought the pressie in early November... dunno what came over me - Yuletide lethargy? :P ;)

Fair enough, I was only kidding (didnt mean to offend  :-\). Sometimes life just gets a bit much, there is so much to do (I can sympathise with that), especially with christmas coming (and kids in the lead-up to chrissie can be pretty hectic). Like I said, should reach its destination in time, fingers crossed  ;D

A MASSIVE 'Thank You' to my Secret Santa - I'm glad I resisted all urges to open the box before Christmas Day, as it would've spoiled the surprise!  ::)
I really DID look like this --> :o :o :o when I opened my parcel, as inside was a set of 5 Miniature Harry Potter Christmas tree decorations (soooooo tiny and wonderful in detail!! ;D) and also a WWF Superstars binder plus ALL the trading cards including a Rock auto card which took my breath away when I saw it!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! ;D ;D ;D
I'm still grinning over the wrestling cards though - I know there have been a number of sets before and this is one I haven't seen previously and I'm having a great time looking through the superstars from 1998/9 and seeing who I know and who I don't! :P

Thanks again Secret Santa - I really am delighted with my gifts! :-* :-* :-* ;D

I also got a little bottle of Vegemite which I never heard of but will have to try  ;D

Thanks again to my Secret Santa for the gifts  ;D

I think a few other people are still waiting to receive their SS gifts Jo - guess it pays to keep your postie sweet through the year to make sure your stuff reaches you before Xmas Day! :-\ ;)
What worries me more, are these gifts getting damaged because they're still hanging around postal depots or in Customs especially with another holiday almost upon us! :o
*sighs* .... I hope they all turn up undamaged soon .... :o=

Lucky your SS didn't get me, I don't think Orlando would look QUITE as nice with his arm around a huge hairy yak

I can't see the sketch :(

Has everyone received their Secret Santa gifts yet?

I'm quite worried about the gift I sent because the recipient has yet to post they've received it and I'm wondering where it's got to?  :-\ :-[
