Ahhhhhhhhh the great promo redistribution of 2005 - seriously this is a cool thing - thanks Jas.

Although from the pics I think the green background of the promo only serves to make poor Frodo look more peaky - poor lad

OMFG!!! Look at that Gimli sketch :o :o :o

Not sure if I am too keen on the stained glass card - is Frodo going to church or something ???

I reckon that Gimli sketch is courtesy of our newest Artist Yakshack member.. Cynthia cummens....

http://www.theyakshack.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3244.new#new

Also i don't think those Stain glass cards are half bad. They're a much better improvement than some of the pointless scenes Topps used to turn into Prismatic Cards for the First Three sets!!!

And nicer than the Level A and Level B Star Wars Evolution Chase cards (those were just plain unimaginative)

yea that would rock she is AWESOME!!!!
I met hre in chicago a few months back.. she was also at ORC last year and I am hoping that she will be at ORC this year :)

she is a very nice person and a very very good artist..

I cant wait to get some of these!

: CC November 26, 2005, 09:30:29 AM
:) Wow, you guys are too nice! Yes, that's my Gimli card. It was actually the sample that I submitted to Topps and New Line back in July. Don't worry, I plan to do more of the same since that one is so well-liked.  I'm not allowed to post my sketch cards yet (approval must be given by Topps/New Line before that can happen). But I can tell you that so far, I've drawn quite a few Arwens, Eowyns, Gollums and hobbits. Oh, and plenty of meaty, juicy Orcs too! I'm drawing 350 cards and will definitely shoot for as many different characters as I can.

About ORC, I've been invited and will be participating in a new event called Iron Artist. It's based on the tv show Iron Chef. It's going to be held on the main stage. Those that attend last year know how HUGE that room was! I'm a bit nervous so cheer me on, gang! You can read about this event on the web site:

http://creationent.com/cal/one_ring.htm

Also, I'll be teaching a kids drawing workshop again, so if you have any suggestions for what your little one might like to learn to draw, feel free to make a suggestion! I may just stick with drawing hobbits and elves again:)

Well gang, I'll let you know when I've updated my web site with these LOTR sketch cards. And might I say how happy I am to be a part of this project! See you all soon!

Beautiful work Cynthia!!   :)   Do you know who any of the other artists are who will have sketch cards in the upcoming Lord of the Rings Evolution card set besides yourself?  Will you be drawing any Aragorn sketches?  He is my favorite!  Thanks.   :)

They are gorgeous pieces Cynthia! I love the Legolas and Frodo watercolour/pencil ones - beautiful!

Fingers crossed I get one (or more ;) ) of your pieces in my boxes :D

I sure hope all the sketches will be that nice, but lets be realistic there will probably be more than a fair share of crappy ones.  I think I will buy a little, but buy most of my sketches online.

I think that Topps needs to ease off milking the sketch cards.  I think it would be a nicer set with a mix of sketches and auto's.  IMO it is the cheapest way for the card manufacturer's to get a product made and give a premium insert.

I want to make sure I clarify that IMO some of the sketches are really fantastic works of art that we all would love to have....on the other hand I have been disappointed too many times by pulling a crappy sketch (IE SW Heritage Martinez) that I would hate to pay $40-$50 for a box and have it happen again.

Does anyone else feel this way?

: Scifi Cards November 30, 2005, 10:59:05 AM
Exactly the way I feel. :P  I'm nervous to see Martinez on the list of artists again for LotR.  He can make beautiful drawings when he wants to, but has not done so for Star Wars unless it is an aftermarket card.  In his defense, he is probably giving Topps their money's worth, as I've heard the pay per sketch is pretty low.  However, I wouldn't want my name associated with drawings that look like some of the Heritage and Sith sketches.

I like the sketch card idea, however I really REALLY hope they do more for this set, I am just not willing to shell out $30-$50 for a box when all I have to look forward to is a sketch card (no offence Cynthia!!!!!) I really hope they get some autographs for the set....I know it would be harder now that the cast is all out doing other projects....but still. There are SO MANY cast members in the movie I would LOVE an autograph from.

"I am just not willing to shell out $30-$50 for a box when all I have to look forward to is a sketch card (no offence Cynthia!!!!!) "

Hehe - and here I sit contemplating how many CASES of this product I want for my PERSONAL collection. Autos be damned - I have all the ones I could want and prop cards from material used in the making of? - Well, that'll be in the retail boxes, but SKETCH CARDS !!! I can hardly contain my drooll...

Does anyone know who the artists are for the sketchcards besides CC and Martinez?  If you know what is your opinion of the quality of their work?  Thanks.

Oh my! What a list!! :o
Thanks for posting it Joanna - looks like some of my fave Star Wars artists will be contributing and I'll be VERY interested to see how they interpret the characters for this set!! ;) ;D

: Re: LOTR evolution P1 promo set for SDCC
: savage727 December 02, 2005, 06:02:08 PM
Thank you Joanna for the artist list.  I only recognize Cynthia Cummens name.  Martinez is familiar only from people posting here how bad his art work is.  I just knew that John Howe and Alan Lee would not be among the artists because either Topps would not pay them enough or they did not want to be involved.   :(

I like artwork about the characters to look as realistic as possible so based on that who on this list do you recommend?

: Re: LOTR evolution P1 promo set for SDCC
: Roz December 02, 2005, 07:23:19 PM
Alan lee told our jas that he would love to be involved.

now either lee or Howe will do you a lovely sketch when you meet either of them, and Howe has said to me that he gets lots of emails from kids wanting to commission art - but of course it would take many thousands to have either of them do you a painting, but he'll send back little sketches to some of the kids when he can.

I guess topps either didn't contact them or offered them so little money that it was an insult, and since we've heard rumours that they offered a WETA guy $0.75 a sketch i think that for Topps even Martinez's work is good value for money (for topps, not for the collector at $60+ a box) :P

: Re: LOTR evolution P1 promo set for SDCC
: Bryanjs14 December 02, 2005, 08:38:13 PM
I would really like to know how much people get paid to sign/sketch. It is one of those things I always wondered, but know I will never find out.
Like how much did they pay Samuel L. Jackson for each card he signed, or the three Potter stars....how much did they get paid per card?
I know RIttenhouse fianlly got Ursula Andress to sign for a Bond set....how much did that cost? (even though I am looking forward more to the two new costume cards!)

If that rumor is true, that is just absurd. $0.75 a sketch? You are telling me if he does 400 sketches they guy will only get $300? That just isn't even worth the time. Even if a sketch takes you 1 minute to do (and some of them look like the take MUCH MUCH longer) and you do 400 sketches, that will take roughly 6.5 hours and, which means you are only getting paid $46 an hour to make them roughly $25 (after all costs) per box with one sketch per box giving them a $10,000 profit. Did you get all that? Because even I reread it and was confused lol. Maybe SketchQueen (I believe I remember that you work for Rittenhouse) would be willing to divulge not any of the big secrets, but possibly a rough cost to make a product? Like how much printing and packaging and all that costs?

: sketchqueen December 02, 2005, 09:21:41 PM
I would disagree with some of those, respectfully :) Art is what moves you - my absolute best advice is to, upon release, go to eBay, go to shows, and see what you like, make a respectable offer, bid what you think is reasonable, and go about it that way.

I once said that, for a specific set, I only wanted sketches by Artist X - and found myself buying cards by Artists A, B and C because even though they weren't my favorites (at the time), the artwork, for lack of a better word, spoke to me. I still find myself looking for Artist X sketches, but am no longer constrained by my once limited thinking...

Ditto.  I saw some stuff I liked, ONLY liked that, then saw something else that "spoke" to me and I've been doomed ever since...  Art is subjective - good art is even more subjective.

And I've heard figures for previous sets that artists are paid very very little (think the highest I heard was a few dollars).  I'm surprised we get any kind of quality from that (though the artists may be on a sliding scale - I have no clue)...

: Re: LOTR evolution P1 promo set for SDCC
: sketchqueen December 03, 2005, 01:51:52 AM
They could pay me a million dollars per card and I still wouldn't be able to draw anything recognizeable, so, yes, the quality we see is impressive and, in the case of Topps, it's the quantity as well. My all-time favorite set is Marvel Creator's Collection 1998 with it's still-unprecedented number of artists contributing, but I really think  Topps is trying to (forgive the pun) top that record as well :)

: Re: LOTR evolution P1 promo set for SDCC
: savage727 December 03, 2005, 06:01:58 PM
Thank you RupT and Sketchqueen for your thoughts on the artists and artwork in general.  I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I will certainly look at what is available on ebay when the time comes.

Roz:

It would have been outstanding if Topps had Alan Lee and John Howe on board even to produce a small amount of work that some lucky people would have found opening a pack - imagine if it was you!   :)

Can anyone tell me if the P1 promo is the only promo for this set?  I can't find promos listed on Jeff Allenders site and no info on Topps site.  If it's only the P1 for this set, does anyone have an extra to sell?

Kelly,
It is the only promo from Comic Con

Unfortunatly I do not have any, sorry!

Kelly - you might like to try this seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6266615194&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/6266615194_W0QQfromZR40QQfviZ1

They ship worldwide so you should be able to get hold of one or more of the P1 promos! ;)
I've no idea if any more promos were done for this set or not - maybe someone else has more info on that?

Here's another who might be cheaper for you as they're a bit nearer:
