After reading the War of the Worlds thread it struck me that some of the more mature (notice I didn't say old  ;) ) Yak Shackers might have films they want to recommend to the next generation.  I thought these might be films they had never heard of or thought of watching but now with older actors back in vogue they might want to give them a go.

So today whilst riffling through my DVD's to pick an ironing film (I always watch a film doing the ironing  :) ) I found High Spirits

I didn't think it was that old but was horrified to find it came out in 1988 (how time flies  ::) ).  It stars Peter O'Toole (Troy), Steve Guttenberg (3 Men and a Baby), Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill) and Liam Neeson (Star Wars).I suppose you could say it is a comedy horror but the scary bits are not too frightening.  The rating is PG/13 but after seeing Spiderman etc I think this is a bit harsh. 

It revolves around an Irish castle and the owners attempts to stop the baddy for-closing on the mortgage.  There is mild swearing, lots of jumps and loads of laughs.  But best of all lots of long speaches by Peter O'Toole, who I think is one of the greatest actors alive.

For me this is a perfect feel good Staturday afternoon film.  A definate two thumbs up  ;D

I do watch older movies. I love the 1990's so I own loads of those DVD/VHS. I also watch alot of 1950s and 1940s and stuff like that. I love The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Too Young to Kiss :-*
 

Oh High Sprits is a great film, I wonder when they are repeating it next. Mind you I would probably miss it anyway or just see the end ::)

One film I thought was good was Rasputin starring Alan Rickman very good but I don't know what cert it is but I think it would be quite high  :-\ But very good although I did have to buy a dutch copy on  :ebay: they seemed to make a DVD and then delete it  :-\ don't know about region 1. It seems to be on TV a lot (I manged to see the end and then an other time the beginning and then the very end  ::) ) which I seem to miss. But I recomend it, although you may never see Snape in the same light again  :-\

Yes I saw Rasputin on telly the other week.  I thought it was Ok but preferred the 1950's version.  I agree you could never look at old Severus the same again  :D.  I seem to remember the Zsar was someone dead famous - well not that famous as I can't think who he was.  He was that actor who looks like Ian McKellan, a la Corrie not LOTR  ;D

Anyway if you liked Rasputin I highly recommend Dogma.  Not sure it is suitable for the very young Shackers, but I would guess any late teens would be OK.  Has Alan, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and some famous female singer who I can't remember her name (seeing a trend yet  ;) ).

I watched Dogma but it was a bit strange and Alan had no bits I seem to remember  :-\

Although I don't want to turn this into a we love Alan Richman thread (yeah right  ;) ) I would like to say Truely Madly Deeply is a very good old film  ;D

Yes I love TMD.  Definately a box of tissues jobby.  I cried buckets  :'(.  Actually another weepy on Sky this month is Jack and Sarah.  I have never made it to the end because I was crying too much, but a brilliant film none the less  :).

The movies that made me cry was Mighty Joe Young (what can I say. I was eight and loved animals at the time ;D) and A Walk to Remember the book turned movie with Mandy Moore and Shane West. Yeah, I'm kind of a cry baby (when I was little I would just ball at the slightest things :o ) but girls love a guy who can control and show his emotions ;)

I loved A Walk to Remember, I really wasnt expecting it to be as good as it was but I cry everytime I watch it. Fantastic film  :D

I always wonder if anyone else has ever seen Jack & Sarah.  I think the guy in it is Hugh Grants brother (Richard Grant ((RIGHT?)).  Anyway Judy Dench and Ian McKellan are also in it.  It is a really sweet story and made my eyes a little watery :'( I must admit.  If you haven't seen it I won't spoil it by telling the plot, but check it out it is one of my top 10 movies I have ever seen.

No, are you sure they do have a resemblance.   Maybe he is Amy Grants brother instead.

Nah - definitely not. Hugh has one older brother, but his name isn't Richard... I think its James.

I like Jack and Sarah but I seem to remember there being no expanation about what happened to the mother. Well we know what happened by why  :-\

Ok new pile of ironing, new DVD  ;D

This time I picked a really long one as there was a small mountain of ironing (so much in fact I have a sneaking suspicion next door is bringing there's in as well).  So the ironing epic film was The 10th Kingdom

This is not that old, probably about 5 years, and was originally shown as a mini series.  I don't have a rating on it, my copy is an unrated American one, but I would say it is suitable for all but very young children

It stars Scott Cohen who was in an American police series that I can't remember  :-[ , John Larroquette who has been in loads of comedy films and Kimberley Williams from the Father of the Bride films.

The story is based on the premise that all fairy tales are true, just based in a different 'country'.  There are 9 Kingdoms; Snow White's, Red Riding Hoods, Cinderella etc.  That is until the above 3 actors get transported to the Kingdoms and everyone realises there is a 10th Kingdom ie Earth, which in this case has its portal in New Yorks Central Park.

The story follows their attempts to get back to New York via many adventures.  What I like most about this film is that it could be true.  All the little things you think of when you read these books as a kid are explained.  Like what would happen if a girl did grow her hair to the same length as Rapunzel or where did the apple that poisoned Snow White come from?  It answers all these sorts of questions in such a way that you think....  maybe they were true  ;D

This was done by the same people who did Jack and the Beanstalk and Arabian Nights.  Both brilliant familly entertainment.  They also made an Alice in Wonderland film but since I am not a Lewis Carroll fan I will stop there  ;D
