The Topps Company, Inc. announced today that it has acquired a license from Warner Bros. Consumer Products on behalf of DC Comics to publish Batman trading cards in North America and Europe. The initial card series will be based on Warner Bros. Picture’s highly anticipated feature film, Batman Begins, opening on June 17, 2005.

"It is both a privilege and a thrill to be associated with one of the world’s most popular and enduring character franchises," says Ira Friedman, Topps Vice-President/Publishing & Licensing. "We couldn’t ask for a more momentous occasion than the upcoming movie event to kick off an all-new era of Batman cards," proclaims Friedman. Batman Begins cards will appear on retail shelves simultaneously with the film’s release.

Topps first produced Batman goods nearly four decades ago, when the company marketed a popular line of art cards featuring action scenes painted by prominent artists of the day.

"We are genuinely excited about this newest chapter in Batman’s trading card history, says Karen McTier, Executive Vice President of Domestic Licensing, Global Toys, Publishing and Themed Entertainment. "Topps is a proven partner, with tremendous knowledge and passion for our property.”

This partnership is sure to give fans and collectors much to look forward to. Trading cards inspired by Warner Bros. Animation’s television series, “The Batman,” are also in development.

“Working on the Batman property is an extra-special opportunity for us,” says Topps’ Friedman, “and we’ll be pulling out all the stops to truly capture the essence of this great franchise.”

Dudes - what I want to know is how, or why, Upper Deck released this to their biggest competitor? I'm so baffled I'm almost speechless  ???

Maybe Upper Deck is finally going to give up in the 'entertainment' market because they couldn't figure out how to successfully market a $500 a pack product?  They probably see bigger returns in sports and gaming cards.

Well, at least Upper Deck isn't producing the set.  If I had to choose between the lesser of the big 2 evil sports cards companies that happen to make non-sports cards, I would choose Topps.

Yeah, Topps has just taken us down that road.

I would suspect though that if there are sketches, Topps wouldn't have an insane amount of preorders to try and fill like for a certain other popular license that everybody and their 2 grandmas preordered way too many cases of hoping to strike it rich.  So the sketches would have a high level of quality.

Although I could be underestimating the popularity of Batman as I'm not more than a casual watcher of the movies myself.

I happen to be a big batman fan and am very excited to hear that they have announced this set.  What, if any, kind of inserts do you think we can expect?  I would love to have a swatch of the batman cape.  haha

I've been obsessed with Batman myself since the first movie came out.  I have all kinds of comic and the animated series stuff.  I can't wait for the new movie and of course the cards!!

Well according to Trade Fax this morning, relic cards are almost certain and autographs are a 'possibility'.

I'm still not too keen on Topps' "piece of the material used in the production of...." But, it's better than nothing :)

Still, knowing that the piece of fabric touched the skin of {fill in the blank with favorite actor/actress} makes it all that more meaningful to me :)

Is that something they always do? Because I was under the impression it was because PJ owned all the LOTR props etc that none were broken down.

In that case... Topps is a bit odd - to be fair the LOTR ones worked because the fabric is so different from what we see normally in the world today and it added a whole dimention to see the colours and texture of the fabric used. But with more modern things like Batman...do you think this will work?

Topps interchanges the words "relic" and "costume" so, as I understand it, their relic cards are what most people would call costume cards.

Afaik - that's the wording they use on everything - though, for Daredevil, they did acquire one actual costume, so that one was worded differently.

Do I think it'll work? I think people are desperate for anything trading card related to DC - I know I've been waiting for aeons for DC sketches to pair up with my Marvel sketches, so yeah, I think it'll sell ;) I hate hate the whole hobby/retail thing which I'm sure they'll do :(

I saw this on NSU this morning.  I'll have a hard time resisting a box or two of this!  One question, though:  If it's supposed to be $2.00 per hobby pack and 24 packs in a box, does that mean we can expect to find boxes selling for $48 or less?

Can you imagine the thickness of the Chest Piece and the Tires?  The cards might even be thicker than the Monsters Book! :o :o :o

I've seen tire cards from other racing sets and they're not that thick. It's not like they cut into the tire and put the entire tread on a card ;) I think it's more like a cheese slicer - where you get a thin slice of tire that's mounted to the card.

That makes more sense.

The tread feature would have been really cool though.  Think of the variants! ;D

I'd love to get a piece of the cape.  I wonder if Gary Oldman will sign for this set like he did for POA?

I'd be surprised, Topps FOTR is labelled up as $1.99 a pack but that's for their retail variation which have one auto per 3 boxes....

I thought that price seemed a bit low.  But, the info about the price is included in the section about the hobby boxes.

Of course, what a manufacturer suggests as the price is not necessarily what dealers will charge!  I've been looking around, but haven't yet found a dealer with any pre-order info.

I can leave costume cards tbh...look at the autograph potential of this set!!!!!

WOW, this set only has three special cards, I bet I could get a master ;) . Only 40 bucks for a box alot cheaper then HP.

I think there are like 3 costume cards, and 5 auto's.  I think they will fall about one per box, based on 1:36 for costumes and TBD for auto's.  

This set reminds me of daredevil.  Just a guess, costumes will probably be easy and auto's very tough.

I never got a Daredevil box. Its on my list but this ones right after HP. It keeps slipping my mind but thats because I'm still trying to get POA card. My mom likes Batman so maybe I can get her a box. She said she would help me with SS so I might get her her own box. Maybe as a VERY late mothers day gift ;)

ya its a nice set . i'm after the Liam Neeson and Michael Caine auto cards although i shall probable never be able to afford them.sob i'd like the batman costume card though they look very cool.how comes topps hets inventive with this set and not wit LOTR(by that i mean the Batmobile's tires card)

But they haven't announced any odds yet.  The hobby boxes supposedly only have 24 packs, which will make cheaper boxes.  If they do announce an autograph per box I will be very excited as 4 of the 5 are signers that I would love to have.  If anyone has any additional info that would be great.

I won't get this set (my big brother might) but the autographs look great. Kbmum said in another post that one of the prop cards is a bit of Batmobile tyre.  Now that would be cool  8) ;D

Ooh - I saw the film tonight and really enjoyed it - VERY slow at the beginning - after the first half hour I was looking at my watch and thinking "oh lord - another hour of this at least" but it really picked up and retrospectively I was glad of the early background story :) awesome

I asked Tony of Triangle Cards this question and he said that he wasn't aware of any binder for this set.  It looks like Topps dropped the ball again (i.e. LOTR Trilogy). ::)

Well I took a plunge on a case and low and behold it was pretty good, with the box price not being as much as most Topps products I figured it wasn't the worst gamble and here are the results

actually how in the name of god did topps get such good props from the film.the tire film used ,the costume itsself silm used and the cape film used.if they can do it for batman why not LOTR

I reckon that they picked up some good tips from Artbox...

Also I think that maybe New Line and PJ may have been less than happy for Topps to slice up the LOTR props than the Batman stuff... but imagine - slices of the One Ring... :o

WOW Beckham1....you got the best autos in your case, the holmes is really in demand, and selling for over $200US and the Oldman is the hardest to get in the set and is selling for even more....so by the looks of it you definately got your money's worth. But if I brought them, I would sooo keep them, they are great looking autos  ;D

What's the tire swatch like?  Is it a cross section through the tire?

The swatches are basically a rubber piece from the tire that doesn't really have any crosssection or anything (at least the ones I got) I would imagine with as big as the tires seem to be they probably couldn't use any of the tread (at least my guess).  Basically just a smooth swatch, but you can certainly feel the rubber vs the cape card which it seems is a velvet type of fabric.  Nice and soft to the touch.

By the odds it looks like there is a fair chance of a dud box - have you guys had a lot of dud boxes?

No - there is a guarantee of one costume card per box (usually the cape) and autos run one per case, though there have been cases with 2 in them :)

Oh yes, now I look again (1:37) there are 2 capes in every 3 boxes - wow! Well even though it's common it's still as cool as beans ;)

I thought Batman's Cape was Plastic or something like that, but it is a fabric of some sort!!

Well officially it was some super fabric that was like cotton or wool of sorts and then when you put a current through it it went rigid so he could glide through the air.

But I am sure for the shooting they just went for a nice soft light fabric ;)

Quality quotes you two - and I have to lean towards - marvellous set - good case price - it makes it much more affordable for people to take the plunge - but why have Topps done that? They can't have got the license cheaper than usual can they?? Perhaps they have done thie because you only get 24 packs a box - and I think that the base set is a lot more expensive to produce than we think...well.. maybe :)

This set is too good - was this at LFACC yesterday?

Bought a case of Batman Begins as they seemed so cheap. After six boxes I was sitting with a derisory five Batman's capes, a dud box and no autos. I was cursing having bought such a naff Topps product. >:()Yet somehow I snagged a Michael Caine on my penultimate box( a massively underrated card, and the one I wanted. :) Having resigned myself to this single, yet cherished auto, I opened the last box. My seventh cape was looming. But then bang!!! A Gary Oldman Auto card / Batman's Costume card in one box. Suddenly the worst case ever had become the best box / best case ever!! To all those with Batman cases, don't give up - at rock bottom I found a real life portal to South London's finest!!! ;)

Is it just me or do a lot of the autos on these cards look pretty flakey? Seems they did not stick to the cards very well before UV coating. Liam Neeson had the right idea using a different pen!!

Really :o I was thinking (from just looking at scans) that he was mad doing that! Argh!

What on earth has gone on?

This has got to be one of the worst sets I have ever seen offered.  How can a set like this be released without the actor who played Batman signing an Auto card? I saw a Master Set on ebay offered by nonsportman and the 3 Costume/Memorabilia Cards are a joke - oh boy a black bit of tire, a bit of black cape and another dull bit of black clothing!  The only 3 cards I liked in the entire set were Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, and Gary Oldman's Auto cards.  The rest is junk. 

Ed - this is a small set with just 5 autos in total - no fillers - If they had also got Christian Bale it would have been the best line up ever - seriously all the other characters are great - whilst your personal choice would not be to purchase Kate or the Scarecrow the two characters were integral to the story and I really like this set.

True they don't have Batman, but this film is thought to be one of three films in total and so there is time for them to fill that gap ;)

I think Batman's cape as a memorabilia card is awesome personally :D The bat tire is interesting - not my favourite either but still pretty fun, and the last piece you talk about is the chest piece - his bullet proof armour (which is very soft to the touch).

Don't get me wrong I don't own a single card from this set, I have just admired it from afar so far (and in person at the London Film and Comic Con), but I admit I am tempted...

Some people prefer large sets like Willly Wonka but I think it's mad to expect everyone to start collecting over 50 pricey cards for one film (that's not interconnected to any others), especially when one is limited to 18 cards. To me this Batman set is a breath of fresh air :) the lack of Bale is a big letdown but everything else about this set is top notch.

But that's all just my opinion ;D Each to their own :D

Hmm, this set is good  0:) and bad >:D...

I think the base set is really really nice.  I think that the foils and holograms STINK! The costume cards are OK, but I wish that the Bat Cape was a little rarer. The autographs, however, are amazing. Ideally, they would be more readily available, but with that kind of line up... I'm sure TOPPS spent A LOT for the actors' signatures. God only knows how much money Bale wanted. If they could secure Michael Caine!!! He has two Oscars(I think.), the money must have been flowing freely. In fact, I think TOPPS must have spent  SO much money that there wasn't enough left over for promos or even better chase inserts.  At least the box prices are aroung $45.00, and not $65-$70.

After trying to collect as many cards as possible for the three HP sets, and spending a ton of money doing so, I have to say that I really, really like the Batman set. :)  With five autos, two costumes, one prop, and two small chase sets, a master set is doable, whereas I'll never have any HP master set.  Not that I'm anywhere near a Batman Begins master set, but it's still nice to know that with some patience, eventually I could do it.  On the other hand, costumes from some of the other characters would have been great, too.

The Cat in the Hat movie set was similar.  It had six costumes, a six-card chase set, three promos and the base set (and no autos).  I need one card to complete a master set.  I'll readily admit that the movie tanked, but I really like the cards. 

Certainly, we're all entitled to our opinions.  There are sets that I hate, too.  Still, I think it's a good idea for card manufacturers to offer small and large sets -- it's very discouraging to have only large sets with expensive autos and variants.  Now, off to complete a costume mini-master of Quotable Star Trek TNG! :D

Has anyone noticed that cases of this product have pretty much dried up - the UK folk sold out almost instantly and now any cases that appear on ebay sell pretty much instantly.

There are a good number of boxes available at $40 BINs etc, but for some reason people are bidding up on boxes to $55 ish... is this drying up? I think it is!

Did anyone ever find a sell sheet for this set? If you see one at your local store PLEASE pick it up for me, I will refund you any costs and send a treat to say thanks, money, cards, your choice ;)

I can't find a picture of it now, but the sell sheet opens up to a three or four-page spread.  It was pretty nice. :)

Do you know, I'm not just saying this but if I was asked to sign a bunch of cards for a trading card set, I'd do it for nothing.  A thank you to the fans for supporting me in my career.  You can get most actors autos for nothing with a little persistence.  Turning up at a premier will get you a major star like Tom Cruise for nought pence - and he really seems to have a LOT of time for his fans.  Would Harrison Ford talk to your mum on a mobile phone the way Cruise does?  I doubt it very much.  And going to conventions means you get it signed in person with maybe a photo to go with it (depending on how grouchy they are that day)

I have a lot of respect for Tom Cruise - so many other stars could take a leaf out of his book.

There's always hope.  The end of the movie includes some plot info that could be used in a sequel. :)

Definitely - in fact it was the most cheesy part of the movie the way they set it up for a sequel.

I've heard that this is going to be part of a Trilogy BUT the bad news is that they intend to reduce the budget. Why? Because although it did really well it didn't do as well as the LOTR films and for some reason Warner Bros are annoyed about that ???

That would be ideal if an actor/actress did it "just for the fans". Many times, I'm SURE the actor never even gets wind of the card companies' proposition for signing trading cards, as it never makes it past their agent or manager...

As for actors speaking on cell phones..Andy Serkis did his Gollum voice for me on my cell phone.  My spouse met him at a signing, that I couldn't go to, and he graciously obliged.

I opened 39 boxes. I traded one with a Yak Shaker.  So, for the statistically inclined, I am listing my results. My overall impression of the set is that it is a very good. All that kept it from being a "Spectacular Winner" is the lack of variety in the "Memeorabilia" swatches, e.g. Scarecrow's Mask, Alfred's Jacket, The Joker's Card, Rachel's Taser  :rofl: Maybe they'll do better next time. The numbers on the embossed foil cards are under the shadow in the little gold or copper coloured symbol to the right of the "DC" Logo in the lower right corner.

Had I bought another 5 cases the results would have probably been closer to the stated odds due to the larger sample.

They are numbered.  kbmum had to tell me where to look because I couldn't find them either. :P  It's numbered on the back of the card in the bottom right-hand corner in the gold oval.

You're right, by golly. But the shadowing makes it almost impossible to see them. I'll edit my breakdown. They way they numbered them is not symmetrical when they're layed out in order,
their numbering makes them green, red, blue, green,red. Oh well, at least they numbered them.

Yay John your set is already doing well :) Mind you if you look at the odds, officially this is almost as rare as Katie Holm's sig!! And it's one in 20 boxes, so one in every 2 and a bit cases! You did well to get so many!

I finished up my set (sans retail cards *YUCK*) at San Diego, so now I have a complete set of the autos :) Yay for me!!

Does anyone know how many boxes were produced?

Unlike Artbox and Rittenhouse, Topps keeps production numbers a close-held secret.  :-X

Sometimes it leaks out from the signers how many they signed, and then it's just a math problem using the stated odds.  But I have not seen any info on the Batman Begins set.

You have done well Sketchqueen. I am now 2 autos from the full set ;D (full hobby set, I haven't been able to get hold of those blister packs available from wall mart sadly, so no stickers or tatoos either), although - the 2 autos needed are two harder ones, Neeson and Holmes... bah!

Wow - that really is great luck! I have opened a good number of boxes and had no luck anything like that :)

By most people's standards my luck was painful until I got to my last case -  a Gary Oldman in the last box (but I did get through 5 cases finding only 4 autographs and no chest piece card to get there!!) In this case I'd have been much better off buying individual cards from ebay - but you win some and you lose some.
