Hi Everyone,
Been lurking on this board for a whole 4 hours now and couldnt resist joining...especially with the impending release of Harry Potter and SS trading cards!  ;D
i'll give you guys a bit if an introduction to who I am. My name is Nicole, I am 17, live in Australia, am a fan of HP and LOTR and these HPSS cards will be my first ever trading cards. I am starting off with 4 hobby boxes worth and the binder. I have a question for all you fellow collectors and I am looking for some plastic sleeves to store my (hopefully) newly acquired autos or costume/prop cards. Can anyone point me in the right direction for what kind of sleeves and screwdowns I would need? Is Ultra Pro or Pro Mold a good brand?
Sorry bout all the Q's Im just really excited at finally getting the chance to collect these wonderful collector items.  :)

I personally use Ultra Pro Mold Platinum 9 pocket pages for anything I am going to keep in a binder.  Whatever brand I think making sure they are "No PVC or Acid Free" (the ones I use say it on the cover) is the most important thing.  I personally for costume, prop, or autos will often put the card in a penny sleeve as well just to make sure the corners don't get damaged when sliding them in the pockets.

If you are also looking for screwdowns I use Ultra Pro for those also, just be aware of the thickness.  I use 100 or 120 pt thick for my thick memorablia cards (ex. Hermione Sweater).  I think they are as thin as 32 pt and that works great for autos. 

That will be super exciting when you pull a super cool prop variant from SS ;D  I am keeping my fingers crossed for you...of course then you will be hooked and spend an unreasonable amount of money on cards....beware of the addiction.

Ive been doing a few searches for what I need and I found some Ultra Pro and Pro mold screwdowns. But its so hard to tell what the thicknessess of these new cards are going to be. I was trying to get organised and invest in a whole bunch of storage things to keep them safe in but its proving more difficult than I originall thought. or maybe I am just stupid.  ???  :P
Ive got the pro pockets sorted ready for my regular cards to go into the binder which I suppose counts for something. Beckham if you dont mind me asking what exactly is a penny sleeve? Will I need extra thick sleeves for costume cards and just regulars for autos?

Penny sleeves are just single plastic sleeves the have an open side at the top.  Usually they come in packages of 100 I think. They are called penny sleeves because they are about $1 for 100 of them

I didn't know before I looked this up on there website, but apparently they do have very thick sleeves for thick cards  :-\

I can't find a pic of the screwdowns I use???  I have never tried the one touch magnetic ones, but  I think a few forum members have.  I would recommend going to a hobby shop if you have one around and check out the selection, then find the different ones you like and find the best price you can.  When I first started collecting I was getting all my supplies at my local shop and they charged like $3 for a ultra pro screwdown 100 pt thick.  I was buying them 5 at a time for $15 total.  Then I found some sites online and I get mine now for $12.50 for a 25 pack of ultra pro 100 pt. (saved about oh...$62.50 on 25.  If you want a cheaper storage device you can get a 10 count snap box.  I have had a few people send me LOTR costume cards in them.  They are about 10 cents a piece.

Which state do you live in? There is a card dealer in Melbourne, prices are a bit higher than buying from overseas, but cheaper than a lot of other local dealers...

I usually don't buy holders for my cards until I get them... cal me superstitious ;)

If you get some 9 pocket pages and some "penny sleeves" then at least you can protect your cards whilst you wait for the arrival of the right "screwdown" cards :)

I am from melbourne and there is a hobby shop here as blackcat said, but I find ordering on  :ebay: to be pretty good too. Sometimes there are even aussie ebay members that sell the 9-pocket pages, pennysleves etc

Well you will have to chat with us more, and let us know what you pull from your 4 boxes!

I got a box of 9-pocket pages for $45 in the city, which I thought was pretty decent. Hopefully you can find someone with a similar price. Its a bit hard to buy these off ebay as the shipping costs are enormous  :-[

Thanks for the info guys. I live in Adelaide so getting to the main city shouldnt take longer than 15 minutes. I'll check a couple of local shopping centre's over the weekend as that is where I purchase my Topps 9 sleeve card holders.
I really hope I pull some nice cards but knowing my luck probably wont.  :P

Between the 5 Aussie members that I know of buying SS boxes, at least one of us has got to pull something nice! Trey, blackcat20, mcgonagall and I are splitting a case of SS - it worked out alot cheaper for us than buying seperately - if you want to join us for the GoF set, you are more than welcome to :)

Soon we'll be splitting a couple of cases between us all! 8)

I am posting a link to an auction just to give you an idea of what I think is a nice holder.

They make this in a size called PC 5 II, PC 6 II and PC 18 II.

The higher the number the thicker the card it holds. No one is making a holder for the Really thick cards like the "Monster Book of Monsters" yet, anyway that I know about.

They refer to thickness of the cards as " pt" or point. This is in mils (1/1000 of an inch). A normal card is about 50 pt, the "Monster Book of Monsters" is about 187.5 pt (3/16 inch).

A lot of techno jargon, but basically the thicker the cards the higher the "PT" number is. I think that 180 pt is the thickest currently being made Screwdown holder.

I recommend getting a small sample to see what you like. It'll save you from having to swap cards later to the one you ultimately end up liking. Remember NO PVC! (Poly Vinyl Chloride - it wrecks the cards)

Since you're new at collecting, you'll most likely get a very good insert from your first box (beginner's luck ;) ).

True, there is such a thing as beginners luck!  My first box of POA update was awesome.  SS will only be my 2nd non-sports card set.  I have found that everyone on this forum is eager to help newbies, and the price guide is a life saver for buying cards from other sets you may want.  Welcome and good luck on your boxes! ;D

Mcgonagall, Trey, Ferdinand, would you mind if I split a case or 2 with you guys on the GOF set? How much roughly would it save? Oh and does anyone know if there will be Chamber of Secrets cards?

I think the Chamber of Secrets is the next one, but please people correct me if I am wrong.

Of course - the more the merrier (and the more cards ;) ) I think it was Kate (blackcat) who bought POA boxes for $100 + shipping per box. By splitting a case between us, we are paying $75 including shipping. So saving $25 AUD per box which is pretty good!

Between the 5 of us, I reckon we can split 2 cases 8)
