Recently, I have been gathering as much info as humanly possible about the marauders map as I am trying to make my own. By doing this, I have disscovered something. Either there are 2 different different maps, or I'm having a major silly moment  ::) Here are the different maps:

Number one is obvisouly a simple version used in the flash intro on the website, but it does give a fair idea of how it folds etc...

Number 2 is from the scene right at the end of the POA where Lupin is packing up. You see the map fold itself up. It looks similar to the website version, but if you look closely, there are 2 extra flaps of paper on the underside of the map.

Number 3 is from the scene where Harry is reading it in bed and notices peter. As you can see, in the map there are several more flaps/folds. The part of the map visable in this picture comes from the second 2 folds to the far left of picture #2. But on that pic, the folds aren't there  ???

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but it's really bugging me. If anyone can shed some light, I'd be most gratefull!!  :) :)

I think the map has millions of fold depending which part you look at. This is no ordinary muggle map :-\

so, are we to assume (being a wizards map) that alot of the folds just 'appear'?

If this is the case, I'm gonna have a hard time trying to make my own, lol >.<

When you think about the number of floors, corridors, and towers that make up Hogwarts, plus the school grounds, Forbidden Forest, and Hogsmeade, Dawn is right.  The folds and flaps would have to appear when needed.  Otherwise, the map would be so big, it would be difficult to carry!

Have you seen the Hogwarts Atlas section at the HP Lexicon?  It might help you plan out your map.

It's already causing some problems...I need to find the right fonts to use. I have a few that come very close, but I doubt I'll ever find an exact match >.< I'm going for a simple version at the moment, similar to the one you see on lupins desk at the end of POA. I'll worry about the 4,508,439 other folds later lol!!  ;D ;D

Ok, I need help indentifying the words that appear in the 'ribbon' at the top of the map...

I already know that the 2nd word (to the right of the picture) is 'MARAUDENTIUM' but I can't make out the first one. One of the map replicas on ebay have writen it as 'ITINERARIUM' but to be honest, to me, it looks more like 'IDNERARIUM'. Does anyone here know what it is mean't to say or have any other suggestions??   :-\

I think I have enough info now to know exactly how the map folds, but thanks for posting that pic!! The more the better, especially any that give a good impression of the size of the map  ;D

The writing that makes up the walls etc can be made up to an extent, I have made out a few words so I'll probably just repeat those. It's just that ribbon part that I'm stuck on >.<

I just checked with an online Latin dictionary, and ITINERARIUM is the correct word.  It has two meanings: 1) compendious lists of the names and distances of the different stations on the public roads, after the manner of roadbooks and 2) chartographic representations similar to travelling maps.

Basically, it's Latin for "Marauder's Map!"

Theres three folds on the map that luping had

One) the fold in the middle right *yellow arrow*
Two) two on the sides *blue arrow*
and
Three) the out side flaps *brown arrow*
I also indicated where you can tell the difference with the second and third folds *black circle*

I'm basing mine on this version, for now anyway. I don't think I'll bother with adding all the other folds just yet. I've also decided to draw the whole thing rather than do it on the computer. In a way it will be easier as I can do all the writing for the walls etc fairly quickly. I've made a start on the front of the map. As soon as I finish it, I'll post a pic  :)

I was just thinking of the one Luluhime was making at the moment.  But wouldn't it be cool at some stage to do that, just to see if any can join together.  I know some of it is hidden under the cardboard but you never know :)

Ok, I just took some pics. It's not just a piece of paper  ;) I've been doing loads of stuff...practising writing in the same style, mixing inks to get the right colour etc...

Here is a pic of a few of the bits I've worked on so far. At the top left is my practise run using a dark brown ink and a calligraphy pen ( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v185/luluhime/mappic3.jpg - close up). Next to it is a test making the paper look like parchment (just coffee and tea dabbed over it). Then in the lower left is, what will be, the final front of the map. To the right of that is a large, pale, print out I did of one of the screen caps I took so I could draw over it and get measurments and scale correct. Oh boy, don't even go there...seriously, I tried and didn't get very far, LOL!  ::) :D

I did however take a total of 215 screen caps of the credits at the end of POA. The credits themselves make their way around the marauders map. I thought that maybe, if I pieced all the screen caps together, I might be able to get a good idea of what it looks like.

Well, I pieced together only a few and then gave up. Something tells me it won't turn out the way I was expecting  ::) :)

To be honest, I'm probably putting way to much effort into it. I don't really know what I'm going to do with it once it's finished  ::) :)

I just set it up and use it for partys and stuff. Not to mention everyone likes it when you've finished because you thought of it first ;)

Yeah, I liked how they came out, but considering that's only about 75 or so screen caps out of 215, I don't think I'll be doing the rest of it anytime soon (unless I get that bored) lol!  ;D

The only problem I have is how to connect it after I'm done with the flaps and everything :(

it shouldnt be that hard because I'm using one piece of paper as about two or three of the side flaps

With mine, I'm going to leave little extra flaps on one side of each foldy piece thing (whatever you want to call it) and then just stick the flap onto the next foldy piece thing lol

I wish I could help both of you more.

At home, I have a Marauder's Map Magic Changing Towl that has the entire front side of the map, and I also have digital pictures of one of the maps used for the movie (it's all folded out) in a glass case.

I don't know how that would help, though. It seems you have all the "front" pictures. And if memory serves me correctly, the digital pictures are much like the screen cap you have in Lupin's office!

Oooo, any pictures you have would be great! Like I mentioned earlier, the more the better really  ;D

I bought 2 jars of calligraphy inks...one sepia and one black, then mixed them. I also bought a burgandy ink aswell which I will also need to mix with alittle black for the red part in the middle of the front page  :)

I'm taking a break from the map at the moment...nearly have a complete permision slip prop done  ;D

I've tried my ink it does say its sepia but its seems very redy/pink am sure it didn't lok like that last time I used it. I now have inky fingers ::)

Try mixing it with a tiny bit of black, that's what I did and it gave me a really nice deep brown colour  :) Hehe, I have different types of green inks all over my hands from testing them out at the craft store today  ::) lol

I was able to obtain a photo someone took at a HP exhibition of one of the permission forms. It wasn't very big (the photo) but just clear enough to be able to read what it says on it  :) ;)

Further, does the Marauder's Map contain Hogsmeade? For some reason, I thought it was exclusively Hogwarts and the immediate surround area ... I remember that he passage way at the Whomping Willow in POA went off the map ... later, we find out it goes to the Shrieking Shack. Regarding the old crone statue passage way, didn't Fred and George tell Harry that would take him straight to Honeydukes basement?

To be honest, I gave up trying to make a replica of the exact map harry has in the film. There's just far to much to it. The map I'm doing is the simple version that you see on the website. It has some of hogwarts, and some of the surrounding areas such as diagon alley and the leaky cauldron. I'm sure I read somewhere that the real map didn't have hogsmeade on it, but from what you've pointed out, that would contradict it  :-\

lol, indeed I did...3 years of it  ;) By the end of it all I was completely sick of art  :P Still, that was almost a year ago now (since I left) and I've started getting back into it again  :)

When you finish this page, you should get a color photocopy or two.  It's too nice to cut!

Hopefully, that's what I will be doing, if I can afford it. It's one of the reasons why I haven't stained the paper yet (luckily I used waterproof ink  ;))

yeah, I'm having a hard time getting it straight, I was always good in art...until I hit the fifth grade then it became ugly :'(

Well...I tryed. I have the outline of the little crest in the middle but my building on the outside are all messed up ::) my dad is good a tracing and eye-balling drawing maybe when he comes again I can let him draw it :-\

How about graphite paper you can use it to trace things. You put it on to of your paper and underneath the picture to copy and its like tracing.

I've put it aside for right know as seeing I've got to alot more important stuff to get my SS box, to keep up my good grades and other stuff I dont feel like typing ;) . But I'll make a list of everything I need after my mind find the map again ::)

I'm actually really getting into this prop making, and loving it  ;D

So far I've made a permision form and working on a map. I wanted to know if anyone had any ideas for other props I could make? They can be from any of the films but need to be something that you see alot of, or have a clear image of it. Any suggestions?

I have pictures from when I made my Howler from COS. That was easy and fun, for me anyways because I had to dye my letter red ;D .

Well, the map itself looks no different from the last picture I posted of it. I've done a silly thing and left the most akward bits last. I've been practising doing a whomping willow before I draw it onto the map. I don't have any clear pictures of the writing that makes up the tree, so, although I know the shape of it, I'm having to guess where some of the writing goes  :D I also need to fill in the middle of the castle with red ink, whilst keeping the writing in it clear. I may just do this on a seperate piece of paper, cut it out and stick it on...when I get it copied, hopefully it look ok  ;D

I think the words that make up the Whomping Willow are "Whomping Willow!"

Well, the towel that I have as a picture of the front including the Whomping Willow. Sadly, thor and my other sister at home caught a bug this week so it was the only thing that I wasn't able to get a snapshot of  :-X The other Marauder's Map prop pics are on a disc (and the Monster Book and ROTK Japan Cards are waiting on my digital camera) ...

If I had internet access at my apartment, this would be much easier. Alas, I'm contsantly going to computer labs during the weekdays!

Yours is just as good or BETTER.  Have you thought of making copies somehow and selling them?  I think "The Monster Book Of Monsters" would be a cool.  You could use fake fur and some marbles or something for the eyes.

I did see that auction  ;D I have looked into making copies but it's going to be expensive. The map I'm making is a full sized one, not an A4 copy. It's A3 in height, and just over half the width. To get one sheet of it copied, it will cost me £2.20 (in colour) and there are about 10 sheets  :-\ Although I could get them reduced to A4 size like the one in the auction, that way it would cost less  :)

The monster book of monsters would be great to make, although I wouldn't ever be able to get it to look exactly like the one in the film (and I'm a terrible perfectionist when it comes to things like this >.<) I could have a go though, when I need a break from the map  ;D ;)

Well, I've put the Howler I made up for auction as a little test piece - see if I get any interest on it. I'm not expecting it to go for much, but then again some other replicas have done pretty well  :P

The book covers aren't official merchandise.  The title states that they're replicas.

Well it took blimin' ages, but I got there  ;D The original is A3 size but I scanned it, reduced it down and printed it out onto A4 parchment to get a feel of what it will be like...

That depends,  ;D! Actually drawing out the page and writing on it has taken altogether, about 4 - 5 hours (it's taken longer because the fine nib of my calligraphy pen has stopped working properly  ::)). If you were to include the time taken practising doing the writing, taking screen caps and collecting every possible available picture of the map, drawing up the hogwarts castle loads of times to get the scale right etc...then I'm really not sure, but all I know is that it has taken AGES! lol Hopefully the rest of the pages shouldn't be that hard now considering they are just loads of writing  :D

if you every decide to make one for sale please let me know i know a couple of kids that would love one

If you can't find the right type of bag, have you thought about making one? All you'll need to do is find the right type of paper  ;)  :D

I think finding a bag would be easier because I can just go to a party shop or a type of party shop :P

I was gonna try for the Howler, but the price just shot up! In any regard, congrats! Honestly, you could make a proffesional career in selling prop relicas ;)

BTW, if I remember correctly, the DVD for POA has some pretty good shots of some Honeydukes stuff in the extras section ... that might be worth your time to get some stills.

As for the Honeydukes bag, there was an official replica made by Warner Brothers. The Zonkos bag was also made. I haven't compared them in detail, but they are similar.

I really do think your map is fantastic!  ;) Like you mention at the bottom of the pics, it might not be exactly like the one in the film, but that makes it so much more unique. What I also like is the work you put into researching where all the rooms were in relation to each other and the different folds you have dotted around  ;D ;)

hehehe, indeed I do!  ;D Another Howler will be going up today or tomorrow, and possibly the bon bons...I still haven't received payment for them, and have had no contact from the bidder so they might get relisted at some point. The map has kinda died. Everytime I look at my little plans of what I need to do, it scares me just how much more needs doing. Actually there was nothing to the folds 8). The main map body was just four flaps double-sided taped together onto another piece and then I added to more to make the inner map then four piece to make the small opening on the inside of the inner map. 

You know the maps Alivans had to stop selling well ones sold on ebay for £182 !!!! :o
