That way he can be in the movie as the elder Bilbo but they would have to use someone else when they switch to the younger Biblo as the story develops. At least that is the way I can see him being in the movie sitting in Bag End relating his adventures to say Frodo! :)

After almost 10 years dealing with Middle Earth, I can't think of anyone else who could do it, really.
