First off... let's say it's "inspired by the Iliad" because there was some seriouis messing with the storyline  :-\

I disliked the first half of Brad Pitt's acting, his accent was not convincing nor were his expressions... but after an hour or so he warmed up a lot and seemed to fall better into the character. And I really must watch out in Greece when I am next there for all the blonde warriors wandering about  ???

I thought Hector was excellently played, and I thought a lot of it was really well done.

But I had lots of quibbles; like Hector was supposed to be dragged FACE DOWN etc....

*cough * Legolas' star appearance at the end was fun!

but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it - in fact despite all the above negativity and after the first hour I really DID enjoy this movie!!! And to those who wanted the Trojans to win all along - all is not lost, Aeneas (not shown really) goes off to found the Roman Empire... which more than saw out the Greek Empire!

I'll make this short and sweet.....twas hit and miss. Eric Bana was excellent and made what was otherwise quite a mediocre film quite good. Pitt almost wrecked it all and Bloom's limits as an actor became a tad exposed.
The old reliables (Cox,O'Toole, Bean) were on form as always.
It suffered from quite strange pacing...although the battle scenes were impressive, I was more visuallly satisfied by the (relatively) short fight which opens Gladiator.

Basically, see the film for Eric Bana's performance who outshines all the other 'stars'.

Good points by you both.  I thought the battle scenes were well done.  Roz I don't think Eric Bana would have liked being dragged face down - do you?   :)  Hey who knows maybe it would have done wonders for his complection!  :P

Sean Bean has been a favorite of mine since I first saw him in the Richard Sharpe series starting in 1993.  Like I was telling you Ed in another Forum topic - this is an example of where I have the entire Sharpe series on tape - 12 or 13 episodes and they have been wearing out from viewing and age and I was glad to see them now available as a set on DVD.

Back to Troy - did anyone see in the credits where the movie was filmed?  

Eric Bana all the way... he and Sean Bean were what turned this movie from bad to enjoyable. The movie was filmed in 2 locations, one was MAlta, I can't recall the other off the top of my head  ???

Morocco I believe.

Ach what can I say? I read LOTR and I expect it to be the same word for word in the movie  ::)

The longer I think about Troy the more I think I enjoyed it - it just took me a while to get into the story somehow. I am still not a fan of Pitt though -  :-\

But hooray for the Iliad, an excellent poem - the longest I can think of (off the top of my head). I used to be able to recite the first 5 pages of the Aenead... blimey I was enthusiastic about my work in those days!

Bye the way folks I saw a new film out called "The Day After" last night at the Drive In.  Featues Dennis Quaid and Ian Holm "Mr. Bilbo Baggins from LOTR's" as scientists who uncover dramatic climatic shifts in the earth's atmosphere that create devestating storms that almost destroy life on earth.  Good special effects.

Here's one....she hasn't seen a Star Wars film, none of the Godfather films and until recently (because I insisted), Roz hadn't seen Blade Runner. Shocked? ;D

It's true!

I was brought up in the Styx Ed (no that's not a reference to Troy  :-\) and so I was unable to go to the cinema much... (Mark was only in the next Village so it's no surprise that when he got to University the first thing he did was get a job at a local cinema so he could see all the latest films.

Our Eds (both American and Welsh) do their best to Educate Mark and I on older films... we do have loads now on our list to borrow from Blockbuster  :-[

Overall I thought it was fairly good.  

The accents (or lack of uniformity of one) was brutal.
Pitt sounded like he always does.
Bloom, sounded like Legolas
most others were English, Scottish, Australian accents.
Director should have picked one and stuck with it.

Overall fairly good movie - I think Bloom needs to work on his range of characters, before he gets typecast for everything.

Roz you must start watching Star Wars with Mark ASAP.
 ;)  Let me know when you can begin to do this and Ed and I can talk to you about Star Wars.   :)

Anyways, in all fairness the Greeks of the battle would have all had different Greek Accents, back then there was no Greece, it was made up of city states just like America is now but each was lead by a main city.

So they'd have all had very different accents anyway....

Another good point made by Roz!   :)  I believe that the various City States also hired Mercenary's to fight as well so you would have people from all over with different accents.  Has anyone ever seen a movie made in the 1950's called "The 300 Spartans"?  Richard Egan plays the lead role and this story fits in nicely with Troy as it is historical fact.  The 300 Spartans fought and died to a man holding a pass against tremendous odds.  The Spartans were outstanding warriors.

The Spartans were great Warriors, but they were less well known for their decorating skills!!!

I see your point about the city states thing, when comparing to the US you most likely would only get a slight difference from state to state.  Most likely more in the slang or commonly used words.  For instance in California (where I presently live, but born & raised in Michigan (proudly) you will hear the word "bro" used all the time...too much, but not that much in the midwest, U.S.  Or in the South "Ya'All" never been a big fan of that one.


Slight differences mostly not too drastic - anyone else??? Opinion?

The movie all in all was decent, I would not rate its as a classic nor do I think it will last too long in the truly memorable film category stakes. Nice popcorn flick, I think, but nothing special. Its a pity, because they could have done such a better job and also it is a pity that they did not do justice to one of the greatest literary works ever created

Beckham is correct but I can also say that there are distinct accents to people from Boston, New York/New Jersey, and the South.  

I agree that the movie could have been better.  I am looking forward to the release of "Alexander".  It will be interesting to see how accurate and well made this movie is compared to Troy.

Sorry I have to side with the savage here  :P there's "literary genius" like Tolkien, and Austen and Gaskell.

Then there's clever literature, like JK Rowling, and Shakespeare and classical literature like Homer and Virgil.

Then there's pap - Aristophanes,  - what a waste of good paper that is!

Sorry Ben, have to disagree with you there... Brad Pitt in my opinion was the worst actor there, I thought his acting was very wooden. I mean that death scene? ::) I think the reason why alot of people thought OB was bad was because his role was of such an unlikeable charcter - if you consider it, he played the cowardly womaniser quite well. But Eric Bana and Sean Bean stole the movie for me - fantastic acting by them both
