: Best Offer? : Morningangel-Iola March 02, 2005, 05:05:06 AM Have got this on my 'my ebay' page anyone any idea what its about ???
: Re:Best Offer? : Trey March 02, 2005, 05:07:47 AM Yea me too.....anyone know what the deal is with this??
: Re:Best Offer? : Boggle March 02, 2005, 05:12:56 AM Its a feature whereby bidders can make you an offer to end the auction, kind of like buy it now, except the buyer offers you a price and you can accept or decline it.
: Re:Best Offer? : ferdinand_the_yak March 02, 2005, 05:14:09 AM Its for auctions that have the best offer option available - it is like a normal auction, but you can send the seller an (obviously sensible) offer for an item, if they like it, then they end their auction and sell it to you for that price. Its like you bidding section, I guess, to keep track of your best offer offers
The last one I saw was for a Beckett graded 9.5 Gem mint FOTR Saruman - where the BIN price was $1000.00! I wonder what kind of offer would have been acceptable there :o : Re:Best Offer? : Morningangel-Iola March 02, 2005, 05:16:59 AM Ooooohhh thanks, not sure I like that someone might come and nick it from under your nose :(
Suppose its a gamble for the seller too as they don't know how much it would have gone for. : Re:Best Offer? : Nienna March 03, 2005, 06:19:43 AM Thanks for telling me as this function suddenly appeared and I'd no idea what the heck it was for! ::)
Full marks to eBay for not telling us, eh! :P : Re:Best Offer? : ferdinand_the_yak March 03, 2005, 06:14:35 PM 'Ere you go - this was the auction I was talking about - the one where it wouldn't be relisted if it did not sell.
It appears that it is being relisted but will not be relisted if not sold AGAIN ::) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=60245&item=6159494362&rd=1 : Re:Best Offer? : Anna March 04, 2005, 02:16:55 PM I've actually made a two offers on Best Offer items. One offer was accepted and the other was declined. It was interesting to see what amount a seller would accept (considering what the original listing price is).
I had to try it because it was something new. ::) : Re:Best Offer? : Morningangel-Iola March 04, 2005, 07:55:11 PM Is that the 'ow what does this button do' philosophy? ;D
: Re:Best Offer? : Anna March 04, 2005, 08:29:50 PM Is that the 'ow what does this button do' philosophy? ;D I have been known to occasionally press the button to see what will happen next. :D Sometimes I'll get surprisingly good results ;D, but then again sometimes the results aren't as pleasant. :P: Re:Best Offer? : Morningangel-Iola March 04, 2005, 08:34:46 PM Words of advice, if you visit the president and he has this big red button don't press it :P
: Re:Best Offer? : Anna March 04, 2005, 08:41:55 PM Don't worry, I'll keep my hands in my pockets if and when I visit him! ;)
: Re:Best Offer? : Sharon March 05, 2005, 02:10:39 AM Is this Beckett grading normal in trading cards?
I hope not, as one of the main reasons I gave up on comics was the CGC grading. After all, who wants a comic in a sealed box they can never open?. It keeps the item nice but half the fun of owning nice stuff is holding it in your hand and going 'ooo-ahhh this is mine, all mine'. Or is that just me ??? : Re:Best Offer? : MakTheYak March 05, 2005, 02:14:36 AM Don't tell me - the other thing you do in the evenings (when not holding your trading cards in hand laughing as though drunk with power)... well every evening.... is TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD?
: Re:Best Offer? : Sharon March 05, 2005, 02:22:52 AM Ssshhhh
Don't give away my plans. They may be watching............ : Re:Best Offer? : Roz March 05, 2005, 02:28:19 AM Oh ok - shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
No - Beckett is NOT normal in non sport trading cards - (so don't panic) but a few people do have their cards graded (snore). However, I couldn't agree with you more - a comic booked sealed up and never to be read... has no point whatsoever to me at all! : Re:Best Offer? : Nienna March 05, 2005, 02:35:02 AM I don't think many people in the UK use the grading system, partly because they don't trust the postal services not to do something horrible with their prized cards! :o
No matter how much I'd like to, I wouldn't want to let something like a Leggy auto out of my sight let alone send it to America to have someone grade it for me ... that's assuming I was fortunate to own one in the first place of course! :P I put my auto cards into archival soft sleeves and then into the hard toploaders. I can keep them safely sorted in a box and can handle them when I want to without fear of damaging them. ;D As I don't collect comics I can't say very much about them, but I think I'd have to agree with Roz on this one ~ what's the point of buying them if you can't open them and read them ... that's what they're meant for isn't it? : Re:Best Offer? : Sharon March 05, 2005, 02:42:37 AM Ooops
My cards are just in the collector folders in ultra pros. But then again I am not up to the 'Tower' standard of lovely cards. But one day......... By the way not sure if this is the correct bit to ask on but if anyone see's a Fizzing Whizzbee varient for sale could they send me a message please. I have an orange one and am looking for an absolutley gorgeous varient (who isn't?) And I promise it is not part of my plans for world domination! : Re:Best Offer? : Nienna March 05, 2005, 03:09:18 AM Nothing wrong in having the cards in the Ultra Pro pages either, it's just I don't like the idea of dust settling on the tops of the binders and you know how plastic attracts dust at the best of times ... I'd hate to have to dust them *shudders* ::)
: Re:Best Offer? : kbmum March 05, 2005, 03:09:19 AM I have a slightly different take on grading. When you can go to a local store and see the sport card, non-sport card, comic book, etc., you can determine for yourself the condition of the item and whether it's worth the sticker price. But when you buy from eBay, you have to trust that the seller is being honest, or for that matter, is knowledgeable enough to give an accurate accounting of the item's condition. It may not be a big issue with new cards, but it is with older ones.
If you buy an item that's been graded by one of the big companies, you'll know whether the corners are sharp, or there's a scratch, or any other problem. Once you have the item in your hands, you're certainly free to carefully remove it from the plastic and read the comic book, or put the card in an album. : Re:Best Offer? : Nienna March 05, 2005, 03:19:28 AM That's a good point about the older cards and one that a lot of us forget as we're only concentrating on the HP and LOTR sets. I suopose some of the FOTR auto and costume cards will now be classed as older stock and you're right ~ we're ALL at the mercy of the honesty and integrity of sellers on eBay when they list their items.
Sadly there aren't the trading card shops here in the UK as there are in the US otherwise we'd be there rummaging through the cards and not buying them sight unseen off eBay(which is what they are even if they do post photos on their auctions)! ;) : Re:Best Offer? : Sharon March 05, 2005, 03:22:33 AM I totally agree but I was worried about taking the comics out of the sealed bag as I was told this greatly reduced their value.
And yes I know I am buying for my enjoyment but I am ruthless enough to want to keep a good re-sale value just in case. With the graded cards is the grading case sealed or do you just get a certificate? I think I have been incredibly lucky not to get any damaged ones through Ebay. I was naive enough to not realise damaged cards were so wide spread (reading some of the postings I now know better) I have only had one dodgy box(every card!) and the company were brilliant and sent me a complet set - chase and all. This was only a Hercules set but we don't talk about that any more ;D : Re:Best Offer? : kbmum March 05, 2005, 03:29:51 AM When cards are graded, they're sealed in a hard plastic case so the card is in the same condition as when it was graded.
I hate to say it, but I've received HP update cards that had some damage, and the sellers never mentioned it in the auction listing. I don't like surprises like that! The big problem with grading, though, is that it increases the price of the card. It's a trade-off -- higher prices, but a guarantee of the card's condition. As for the comic books, maybe you could spend money on one that's graded and then buy one that's not in good condition, but cheaper, so that you can read it? : Re:Best Offer? : Roz March 05, 2005, 03:57:03 AM From a point of view of condition KBMum I couldn't agree more.
Ferdinand the Yak and I went through a spate of buying cards (FOTR cards in fact) that were ... well let's just say they didn't live up to our high expectations. And that's an understatement, I still have one I refer to as a "tea towel" it's in such poor condition. I couldn't sell it in good faith so I don't ;) I just keep it on display and I don't worry about the effect of ultra violet light on it ;) At that point I think I voiced that Beckett grading wasn't such a bad idea ;) To be fair I have to say I've really appreciated opening cases of PoAU and having all my cards mint - only one wasn't mint and Artbox kindly replaced it :) I think the important thing to take from this is to buy from people you know - on ebay if that's where they are selling, but just so you know what you are getting. Or don't be afraid to ask lots of question for sellers to any sellers you haven't bought from - or check their feedback to see if they dealt with any of your friends and email them to see how their deal turned out. : Re:Best Offer? : ferdinand_the_yak March 05, 2005, 05:48:04 PM A very expensive tea towel Roz :-\
Its true, the older the card series, the riskier, but as I am only going to be buying FOTR cards from now on (LOTR I mean), its the risk I have to take... sticking with sellers I know or have a good rating. I have only once received a non mint card during my card buying (it had to be the FOTR Leggy ::) but that was not in as bad a state as Roz's - I sold it to get a mint one, but I made sure that I described the 'damage' as accurately as I could.) The one consolation I do have is that due to the value of the FOTR cards, previous owners would/should have taken pretty good card of them anyway! |
